Child Safe StandardsChild Safe StandardsChild Safe StandardsChild Safe Standards St Joseph’s school has an important responsibility for keeping children safe, protect-ing them from abuse. Standard three (of the Ministerial Order) requires that our school develop, endorse and make publicly available a code for all school staff, volun-teers, School Committee members, contractors and clergy. The code of conduct:

1. has the objective of promoting child safety in the school environment

2. sets standards about the ways in which school staff, volunteers, School Com-mittee members, contractors and clergy are expected to behave with children.

Our school has established, (in consultation with staff, the School Committee and the CEOS) clear expectations of staff, volunteers, School Committee members, contractors and clergy for appropriate behaviour with children, in order to safeguard them against sexual, physical, psychological and emotional abuse and/or neglect. Our Child Safety Code of Conduct recognises the critical role that our staff play in protecting the children in their care, and clarifies and affirms the standards of behaviour expected of all Catholic school staff and personnel who work in or provide services to Catholic schools. Our child safety code of conduct spells out professional boundaries and acceptable and unacceptable adult/child relationships and behaviour, and provides a reference point for our staff, School Committee members, volun-teers, contractors and clergy. A final copy of Our Child Safety Code of Conduct will be made publicly available to all families in the coming weeks. We expect that all families will familiarise themselves with the code.

In collaboration with creating a safe environment for our children, it is mandatory for all parent volunteers and

helpers to have an up to date Working with Children’s Check. All parents helping/volunteering in the school

must sign in at the school office and wear a visitor’s badge whilst in the school.

Collaborative LearningCollaborative LearningCollaborative LearningCollaborative Learning At St. Joseph’s school, we continue to build and promote collaboration as a vehicle for achieving effective learning. This in turn assists with the development of effective learn-ing and thinking skills necessary for the 21st century. Collaborative learning involves groups of learners working together to solve a prob-lem, complete a task, or create a product. Collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is a naturally social act in which the participants talk among themselves. It is through the talk that learning occurs and the active exchange of ideas within these small groups not only increases interest among the participants, but also promotes critical thinking. Collaborative learning is not simply children working in groups. It is an active process whereby learners assimi-late information and relate this new knowledge to a framework of prior knowledge. Real learning requires a chal-lenge that opens the door for the learner to actively engage his/her peers, and to process and synthesise infor-mation rather than simply memorise and regurgitate it. All learners benefit when exposed to diverse viewpoints from people with varied backgrounds.

Learning flourishes in a social environment where conversations between learners take place. It is during such

discussions that the learner creates a framework and allocates meaning to the discourse, clarifies understandings

and thus develops real knowledge and skills. In the collaborative learning environment, the learners are chal-

lenged both socially and emotionally as they listen to different perspectives, and are required to articulate and

defend their ideas. In so doing, the learners begin to create their own unique conceptual frameworks. Such

shared learning gives learners an opportunity to engage in discussion, be actively involved, take responsibility for

their own learning, and thus become critical thinkers!

A Letter From Abraham Lincoln To His Son’s Teacher A Letter From Abraham Lincoln To His Son’s Teacher A Letter From Abraham Lincoln To His Son’s Teacher A Letter From Abraham Lincoln To His Son’s Teacher

My son starts school today. It is all going to be strange and new to him for a while and I wish you would treat him gently. It is an ad-venture that might take him across continents. All adventures that probably include wars, tragedy and sorrow. To live this life will re-quire faith, love and courage. So dear Teacher, will you please take him by his hand and teach him things he will have to know, teaching him – but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every enemy, there is a friend. He will have to know that all men are not just, that all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero that for every crooked politician, there is a dedicated leader.

Teach him if you can that 10 cents earned is of far more value than a dollar found. In school, teacher, it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat. Teach him to learn how to gracefully lose, and enjoy winning when he does win. Teach him to be gentle with people, tough with tough people. Steer him away from envy if you can and teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Teach him if you can – how to laugh when he is sad, teach him there is no shame in tears. Teach him there can be glory in failure and despair in success. Teach him to scoff at cynics. Teach him if you can, the wonders of books, but also give time to ponder the extreme mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hill. Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong. Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone else is doing it. Teach him to listen to everyone, but teach him also to filter all that he hears on a screen of truth and take only the good that comes through. Teach him to sell his talents and brains to the highest bidder but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul. Let him have the courage to be impatient, let him have the patience to be brave. Teach him to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind, in God. This is the order, teacher but see what best you can do. He is such a nice little boy and he is my son.

It is generally a personal choice to hold ourselves to consistent moral and ethical standards. Integrity is also regarded by many people as honesty and truthfulness.

FeelingsFeelingsFeelingsFeelings

Some children are quite good at speaking about their feelings and will give you a good account of how they are feeling. Others may be horrified at even the thought of having to speak about their feelings even to someone close to them. It is important for children to voice their feelings rather than churning up in-side or expressing their feelings in an inappropriate manner. As parents we can model this, give them op-portunities and encourage them to speak with us when they are ready. Sometimes, even try giving the children a start for the discussion by naming some of the feelings. This can lead to healthy and happy chil-

dren being able to discuss anything with us .

Free Verse Poetry: Chocolate By 1/2 F

Yummy, oozy chocolate, melting in my mouth. Melting down my hands. White chocolate melting in my tummy. 100 bits of chocolate falling down my face. White chocolate running down my throat. Gooey chocolate in my belly. Crunchy chocolate, running down my hands. Runny, sticky chocolate, dripping onto the ground. Yummy, sweet chocolate. Drippy, white chocolate running down my face. Delicious chocolate smudged into my face. Chocolate in my very hungry tummy. Rich white chocolate. I love ooey chocolate because it is tasty.

I eat chocolate after school every day.
