Murwillumbah Public School Promoting Excellence in Education Newsletter 16th May 2019 Term 2 Week 3 PUBLIC SCHOOL Prince Street 6672 1467 Murwillumbah Principals Message Firstly, I hope all of our mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday the 12th! I would also like to wish Mr. Daley all the best as he starts his long service leave for the next 3 weeks. We hope he enjoys his time away from the hustle and bustle of school. DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL Congratulations to all the students who qualified for the District Cross Country Carnival on Friday. Over 70 students will be at Murwillumbah High School proudly representing our school. Good Luck! I would like to thank Mrs Ross, Mrs Hill, Mrs Lack and Mrs Jarvis for their attendance and organisation of our school team. Students will leave school at 9.10am. ELECTION DAY The Murwillumbah PS Hall will be used as a polling place for the 2019 Federal Election. If you visit our school to vote please make sure you support the P&C sausage sizzle. Volunteers are always welcome. A note has already been sent home with the relevant details. Thanks to the P&C for all their hard work. AFTERNOON PICK UP I again remind parents that the side gate along Prince Street is no longer open of an afternoon. Students will need to be collected from the front gate. We appreciate your support with this change. ASSESSMENT/REPORTS Parents receive two written reports each year and this term will see Semester One Reports issued at the end of term. The reports will give you a clearer picture of your child’s achievements. They will help you understand how your child is progressing and how we can support your child’s future learning. Over the coming weeks we will be in full assessment and reporting mode. The structure of this year’s report remains the same with students receiving a mark for their daily effort in all areas. Staff will also write an overall general comment towards the end of the report. It takes many hours over many weeks for staff to write and finalise their reports. I thank them in advance for all their hard work. WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY This Friday is Walk Safely to School Day. Mrs Hill and Mrs Lack are coordinating the day for our students. We hope as many students as possible can walk to school to promote being active and safe around our roads. If you do need to drive, it would be great to park a few streets away from our school and walk that distance. Students will also participate in walking activities as part of Friday Sport. They will receive a ‘walking passport’ to record their activities. Term 2 is a very busy time in every school and Murwillumbah PS is no different. There are a

Positive Behaviour for Learning News

Side Gate Closure As of Monday, 13th May, the side gate along Prince Street is no longer open of an afternoon. Students will need to be collected from the front gate. Thank You for your support.

Last week’s PBL lesson was about behaviour expectations in the Wednesday afternoon assembly. This week’s focus is on the morning routine before school. Each week, mystery teachers select the best behaved class at our Wednesday assembly to have Possy Pete for the week. Last week Possy Pete spent time in Mr Stowe’s classroom (3/4S). This week Possy Pete has been in 5/6R with Mrs Ross and her class.

Each Thursday there is a special draw of the PBL chance cards and somebody from each stage chooses a prize. Later in the term, there will be a special excursion for the winners of the PBL draws from Term 1 and Term 2.

Creative Arts CampCreative Arts Camp is held at Lennox Head in August. Information regarding the camp was distributed to children in Years 4, 5 and 6 earlier this Term. If you are interested in this amazing and valuable opportunity for your kids don’t forget to grab your Application Form from the school office and return it to school by Friday, 24th May.

We’ve been very busy in 2K! We have been working hard and growing lots this year. In maths, we are learning to tell time. Students are excited to wear watches to school so that they can practice their skills throughout the day. We are writing narrative pieces in the fairy tale genre. The students are using their wonderful imaginations to incorporate magic and fairy tale creatures into their writing. Last term, we learnt about “People and Places” in Geography. We read Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, and sent our Flat Stanleys to visit Colorado. They are beginning to return with pictures and letters about their travels. It’s fun to learn about the other side of the world! Our Science unit for this term is “Schoolyard Safari”. We are beginning to learn about the tiny animals that live in our schoolyard such as ants, snails, and worms. We’re looking forward to housing some of these critters in our classroom!

Around the School with 3/4A Stage Two have been enjoying hands-on activities based around our Science topic “Living World”. Using magnifying glasses students went in search of living things in the garden. In the classroom, the students observed the amazing transformation of tadpoles into frogs, the process, called metamorphosis. Sunflower, bean and tomato seeds have also been planted. The students are keeping a diary and are monitoring and recording the growth of the bean seeds. Some seeds have been placed outside, some in a dark room and others in the classroom. In Maths, students have enjoyed constructing 3D shapes using matchsticks and playdough. They also cut, pasted and assembled a square-based pyramid.Next Monday is World Bee Day. Stage Two will ‘bee’ celebrating World Bee Day on Thursday 23rd due to Naplan testing on Monday. Many students connect bees to the honey on their morning toast or school sandwiches but don’t realise that most fruit, nuts, vegetables and seeds are dependent on bees. Students will look at the role of bees as pollinators in the ecosystem. Students will develop an understanding of bees, the threats they face and the steps they can take to be bee-friendly.The students will also ‘bee’ involved in a number of fun filled activities, such as making honey joys, beeswax wraps and watching the “Bee Movie” which will “bee” a great opportunity to investigate the importance of bees.

Live Life Well

iPlayiPLAY is a school-based program that is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and NSW Department of Education. iPLAY aims to promote children’s physical activity through implementing a whole-of-school approach. iPLAY involves 6 key components: 1) quality physical education and school sport, 2) classroom movement breaks, 3) physically active homework, 4) active playgrounds, 5) community physical activity links and 6) parent/caregiver engagement. During the term a section of the school newsletter will be dedicated to iPLAY. This section will have information and ideas for promoting physical activity and fundamental movement skill development in children. Get Active!Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Making physical activity a priority and encouraging good habits in children from an early age is important and can help them to develop the skills they need to be active throughout their lives. Why is being active important?Children benefit greatly from being active as it can:• Promote healthy growth and development• Build strong bones and muscles• Improve movement skills• Improve cardiovascular fitness • Help achieve and maintain a healthy weight• Improve academic achievement• Help relaxation• Provide opportunities to make friends• Improve self-esteem and self-confidenceChildren who are not physically active enough will not have the opportunity to gain these benefits and are at an increased risk of becoming overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese long term can contribute to conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and heart disease.
