Mt. Baker Middle School is committed to meeting the needs of early adolescents, in recognition that no age group has more unique needs or is more in need of wise counsel and guidance.

Statement of Philosophy We believe the well-being of the

students in our care depends on the creation and maintenance of balance in academic, physical, emotional and social areas. Further, we recognize that young adolescents are learning such balance, and that it is critical that we teach, model and encourage it.

Executive Summary

Mt. Baker School Vision Mt. Baker Middle School is committed to meeting the needs of early adolescents, in recognition that no age group has more unique needs or is more in need of wise counsel and guidance. Background Information WAC 180-16-220 Requirements for School Improvement Plan

Each school shall be approved annually by the school board of directors under an approval process determined by the district board of directors and “At a minimum the annual approval shall require each school to have a school improvement plan that is data driven, promotes a positive impact on student learning, and includes a continuous improvement process that shall mean the ongoing process used by a school to monitor, adjust, and update its school improvement plan.” School Improvement plans must include a brief summary of use of data to establish improvement; acknowledging the use of data which may include DIBELS, MAP, WELPA, Credit Attainment, Enrollment in Honors/AP Courses, CEE Perceptual Data, SAT/ACT, Discipline, and MSP or HSPE.

Highly Qualified Staff All staff meet the highly qualified requirement in the area(s) in which they teach.

Demographic data Mt. Baker Middle School works with students that primarily represent both ends of the demographic spectrum. Presently, Mt. Baker has 46.7% of our student population that receives free and reduced lunches. In addition, Mt. Baker also serves the growing communities of Lakeland Hills and Pacific. The Lakeland area has recently experienced a large growth in large family residences that are being built which has led to our population growing significantly. The school board has closed our school to waivers for this reason.

Discipline and Attendance Analysis Mt. Baker Middle School works with students that primarily represent both ends of the demographic spectrum. Presently, Mt. Baker has 46.7% of our student population that receives free and reduced lunches.

Assessment Decisions All available assessment data was reviewed and considered while creating this plan. Data included academic as well as demographic. Comparisons between the data was made in search of the “root cause” of any identified areas of struggle.

MSP/HSPE Reading • In 2012, grades 6 and 7 both saw a dramatic improvement in students meeting standard in

reading on the MSP. 6th grade moved from 78.6% in 2011 to 83.4% in 2012; 7th grade moved from 54.8% in 2011 to 73.7% in 2012.

• For the eighth year in a row, 7th Grade Mt. Baker Middle School students continued to

perform above the district average in the area of Reading.

• For the third year in a row, 7th Grade students being served in Special Education, continued to perform at a substantially lower rate on the Reading MSP test, than their cohort members at Mt. Baker Middle School.

MSP/EOC Math • In 2012, only 7th grade saw in increase in those meeting standard in math, and it was only

a small increase.

• For the seventh year in a row, 7th Grade Mt. Baker Middle School students performed above the state and district average in the area of Mathematics.

• For the fourth year in a row, 7th Grade students identified in the category of “Low

Income” continued to perform at a lower rate on the 7th Grade Math MSP test, than their cohort members at Mt. Baker Middle School. However, the gap is beginning to close.

MSP Science/EOC Science • In 2012, 69.2% of Mt. Baker Middle School 8th Grade students achieved above standard

on the 8th Grade Science MSP. This was an increase of nearly 3% over the previous year. • In 2011, 41.6% of Mt. Baker Middle School 8th Grade students identified as Low Income

students, did not achieve standard on the 8th Grade Science MSP. This represented the second year with a significant drop in the percentage of Low Income students not meeting standard in this area.

MSP/HSPE Writing • In 2012, both 7th and 8th grade saw increases in students meeting standards in writing on the

MSP. 7th saw an increase of 14.5% over 2011 and 8th grade saw an increase of 3.4% over 2011.

• Unlike previous years which showed a downward performance trend on the MSP in the area of writing, Mt. Baker Middle School students showed a significant increase moving from 57.4% in 2011 to 71.9% in 2012.

Prioritized Challenges - MSP Scores are stagnant, not much growth, not much loss from

year to year. - Population is changing dramatically, with the Latino

population becoming our largest ethnic group. - ELL students are struggling to perform. - Staff cohesiveness is reduced since the elimination of teaming

time. Trust and working together towards common goals is an area that needs improvement.

Literacy Goal Group: Dena Walker, Erin Carnahan, Mindy Hawk, John Lees, Sue Millang Reading and Writing Goal Group Research Materials: Staff Members utilized current CEE data as well as current Reading and Writing Research articles. Staff members utilized the works of Cris Tovani and Stephanie Harvey in their discussions plus utilized student MAPS data in specific strand areas to determine middle school Reading trends over the past three years.

Math Goal Group: Patrice Rademacher, Mary Torcaso, Susan Buhr, Aaron Cowan, Dennis Lubash, Dixie Toy Math Goal Group Research Materials: Staff Members utilized current CEE data as well as current “Fix-it” strategies for Mathematics. Also utilized article on Best Practices in Mathematics, plus utilized student MAPS data in specific strand areas to determine middle school mathematics trends over the past three years at Mt. Baker Middle School.
