***Have you heard your child read today? We encourage all students to
practise their reading at home about 5 nights per week. Therefore, by now, most
students should have read at least between 205-210 nights. Well done if you
have kept up! ***
On Monday 18th December our Monday Morning Assembly is our Awards
Assembly. That means that there will be several special and traditional
awards handed out to deserving students to recognise their efforts over the
whole year. We encourage all families to come along to help congratulate the
award winners.
***We can all work together to rid
the community of Head Lice. Let’s
check our heads once per week!***
Student Reports will come home with students this Friday. We encourage
families to make contact with their children’s teachers if they would like to
discuss the report. We have also asked students not to open the reports until the
reports arrive home to mum or dad.
Last Saturday, our School Choir performed at the Puckapunyal Christmas
Picnic outside the Area Theatre. They sang beautifully again! Again, we
congratulate the choir on all of their performances this year. We also thank Sally
O’Connor for her tireless efforts with the choir in 2017. Well done, Sally.

Happiness: There are choices we make every day that
may seem unrelated to health and happiness that can
affect the way we feel mentally and physically.
Number 4: Be part of a community! Joining a group
offers strong sources of belonging and friendships,
which are critical for health and happiness. These
friendships may last for decades and are crucial for long
term health.
Second-hand uniform: If you are leaving and have any
additional PPS uniform (especially shorts and tracksuit
pants) we can find them a new home. It’s always useful
to have a supply of second hand uniform on hand.
Thank you.
Have a terrific week!

behaviour everyone!

**REMINDER- Pucka News is a growing interest in the school and our community. You can
see each episode live at our school assemblies at 9am on Monday mornings. Everyone is
encouraged to come along and watch each episode. If you are unable to attend, you can follow
Pucka News by watching each episode on our Facebook page. **
Next year, as with every year, we ask parent volunteers
to help with our Swimming Program. In weeks 2
and 3 for Term 1 in 2018, our Years 3-6 students will be
attending the Area Pool for swimming each day. If any
parent would like to volunteer to help with the
swimming groups, please contact us. We try to keep the
group sizes as small as possible. The more people that
volunteer, the better. If you have Austswim training that
is great! If you do not, we can organise some training for
you as long as you help us with our program in return. If
we have trained you in the past, please volunteer again.
If you do not have Austswim training
and can’t do the training, you can still
help. Ask us how. We need you!
The School Spelling Bee Final is on again this year. It
will take place at school on Tuesday 19th December from
11:30 a.m. in the PC Centre. It has become a great tradition
during the last week of the year for the past few years. Even
though several families have left by then, it has become an
event that keeps the school ticking along right up until the
end of the year. All families are welcome to come along.

Thank you, Parents! This year we have had a small number of dedicated
parents who have continuously strived to ensure that
our students have canteen lunches each Friday. Our
students would not have had the wonderful canteen
lunches without our volunteers. We thank those mums
for terrific service to our school.
Thank you, Stacy! For the last 2 years, Stacy Brooks has voluntarily
managed the canteen lunches. That means, she has
organised parent rosters, ordered food, organised
menus, liaised with school staff, etc. etc! We thank
Stacy for her wonderful dedication and leadership!
We will be looking for more volunteers to help
each Friday in 2018. If you can help, please see
Simone in the office.

Teachers are looking for students who are demonstrating ‘Tolerance/Compassion’ to be eligible for the Student of the
Week award. We encourage parents to talk to their students about our values throughout the year.
What does Tolerance/Compassion mean? At assembly this week, Year 5 student Eli Casey read out the meaning of
Tolerance/Compassion.
‘Tolerance’ is accepting things that you can’t change or things that you wish were different. Tolerance is practised when
you accept things about people that you don’t like. A friend may have an annoying habit that irritates you or a family
member may do things that annoy you. You tolerate these things because you care for those people.
‘Compassion’ is caring about someone who is hurt: physically, emotionally or psychologically. It’s being kind and
understanding because the other person matters to you. Compassion is forgiving someone who has hurt you. It’s caring
deeply and wanting to help even if you do not know that person.
Each week at school, SRC representatives remind our
students of a few important school rules.
This week at assembly, SRC representatives, Zoe
Landel and Dani Corocher reminded our students of the
following rules when playing on the school veranda:
- This is a quiet place for students to play.
- There should be no running or jumping around.
- No yelling or screaming while playing here.
- Do not stand on or swing on the railings.
- There are a lot of toys on the veranda to play with so
please do not throw them around.
- Make sure you pack up the toys and push in the
chairs when you are finished playing.
Please discuss these rules with your children to help
ensure that they understand.
Happy Birthday to Ella Padman, James
Van Der Waal, Jack Anderson and Sophia
Cargile who are all having their birthdays
this week. On behalf of the Puckapunyal
Primary School Community, we wish them all
a very Happy Birthday!
On Monday after assembly, our keyboard (and violin and trombone) students, along with keyboard
teacher, Peter Hagen put on a great concert. All students involved played for the whole school! They did a great job! Well
done kids and thank you, Peter!
Friday 22nd December will be our last day of Term 4 in 2017.
The children will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.
At 1:10 p.m. there will be a final assembly just to say
goodbye and to wish you all a Merry Christmas. Please come
along and join in our last assembly for 2017 in the school
amphitheatre or PC Centre.
The final day can be an ‘out of school uniform day’ for all
students.
There will not be any buses available on the last day for our
students who normally travel to school by bus. Students will
have to make other arrangements for that day.

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when
discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home,
etc. Parents have indicated that this information is very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are very busy
places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means that we can plan to cover
certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 6 & 8 Literacy: We are revising all letters and sounds and looking at blends (sh, ch and th). We are writing sentences and using
capital letters and full stops.
Numeracy: We are revising money, calculators and ordinal numbers.
Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 4 & 8 Literacy: .We are revising skills for editing of work to improve meaning, spelling and punctuation.
Numeracy: We are revising concepts covered this year.
Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 3 & 4 Literacy: We are revising skills for editing of work to improve meaning, spelling and punctuation.
Numeracy: We are revising concepts covered this year.
Middle School Years 3/4 Rooms 9 & 10 & 11 Literacy: We will be preparing for our Student Led Conferences and completing all unfinished tasks.
Numeracy: We will be working on times tables, the four processes and revising topics covered this semester.
Senior School Years 5/6 Rooms 1 & 2 Literacy: We will be preparing for our Student Led Conferences and completing all unfinished tasks.
Numeracy: We will be working on times tables, the four processes and revising topics covered this semester.
‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’
Quote – William Butler Yeats
As advertised at the beginning of the year, 2017 is the last
year that students can wear the old style school shirts.
Newer designed school shirts have been part of our
school uniform since the latter part of 2015. We have been
phasing out the old style shirts for the last 2 years or so.
Please plan for the permanent change for the beginning of
2018.
Children in 1/2I had the challenge of inventing a
device that made a marble roll down an inclined
blackboard as slowly as possible. They used bricks
and playdoh. Bill and Max were able to get to 6.43
seconds using their contraption!

Thursday 29th March End of Term 1
The end of 2017 is almost here and our students and families will be excited thinking about holidays and
Christmas. No doubt there is a little bit of anxiety about the new school year.
For Kinder families, we hope that our school has been helpful over the past few months with transition
days so that the move into Foundation (Preps) will be easier for your child. The year 2018 is going to be
special for your family as it will be your child's first year of schooling. We understand that families will be
excited and nervous.
The starting date for Years 1-6 students is Tuesday 30th January (meet in the amphitheatre at the back of
the school). The first day for Foundation (Prep) students is Thursday 1st February (meet in the
amphitheatre at the back of the school). Families and students can find a seat together in the amphitheatre.
The Foundation (Prep) students will then attend school for normal hours from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. for
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in February. The students will not attend school on
Wednesdays during Term 1 until 7th March. This again will help the students get used to school life and a
break mid-week will keep them refreshed for school. In our experience, Foundation students do get very
tired in their first few weeks of school and a break mid-week has shown to be beneficial. Again, the
Wednesday will also be used for Foundation student testing and an appointment date will be given to each
family for one of those Wednesdays.
We will be conducting a New Family Information Night on Tuesday 23rd January starting at 5pm in the
PC Centre. The Information Night is mainly for new families so that they can come and learn new and
important information about our school. We recommend that all new families attend that session.
School Open Day is Wednesday 24th January (the next day), which is again for families who haven’t yet
enrolled their children or had a chance to tour the school. They will also get an opportunity to meet with
the principal or leading teacher to discuss their children’s educational needs. School Uniforms will also be
available for any families to purchase on that day. The next day after Open Day, when we have a much
more accurate idea of how many students will be attending our school, we will send each family an email.
The email will let families know who their child’s teacher will be and what classroom they will be in for
2018. (If the school does not have your family’s email address please pass it on to the
school). 8

To celebrate the hard work that our students and teachers have done
during the year we traditionally celebrate with a class party at the end
of each year. On Tuesday 19th December, each grade will be conducting
their classroom party. Each child will be required to bring something from
home to contribute. Please see the timetable for each grade below. Please
note that we do not have any fridge space for the party food.
