THE CAR CRASH

OVERVIEWIn this scene we witness a build up to a car crash causing a terrific turn in the story this is one of the disruptions. In this scene we see that the mother is troubled that her husband “seems a bit distant” as she says, when she said that we see that the husband looks to her like he’s about to confess to her about something important but he’s too late. The way the scene was made was quite surprising filling it with pure shock as the next scene shows a car coming out of nowhere. This had set the tone for the whole film.

Page 3: SCENE ANALYSIS

For the first disruption on the movie it begins showing an establishing shot that allows us to quickly understand where they are located and what is happening. As shown above we are given quite a basic shot, not much has been applied at all, its just a normal boring family drive, this was set up by Neil Marshall to make his watchers feel calm and to not expect nothing more than scenes of the ride home. This allowed him make the car crash scene a traumatic experience.

Page 4: SCENE ANALYSIS

In this shot we have Sarah talking to her daughter having a light back and forth happy conversation. Analysing this shot we would call this a two shot, it shows close up on Sarah as a medium shot with the husband unfocused on the right. This scene shows a conversation between Sarah and her daughter but the way this has been captured is so that you are getting a glimpse of Sarah’s personality showing a connection. This was shown to be a build on the audiences understanding of Sarah’s daughters death understanding her reactions of the impact, these scenes quite simply summed up their connection.

Page 5: SCENE ANALYSIS

Here we see a simple side close-up shot generally used in filming a conversation in a car. Here Sarah had finished talking to her daughter and turned back around to look and talk to her husband as he looked troubled. This was a shot that allowed the audience to see the husbands emotion which showed to be completely disconnected as there was no interaction with his daughter at all. His facial expression is clearly shown with this type of shot as we are to tell that he looks unhappy as we know that his having an affair. As well as analysing the husband this automatically tells the audience the speed they are travelling at with the blur of the trees going past in the background.

Page 6: SCENE ANALYSIS

We are then given a wide angle shot inside the car were we are given a chance to see the whole family altogether. This allows us to see the expressions shown towards each other and then watching the couple talking to each other. Again we see Sarah looking concerned and worried where as the husband looks uncomfortable as he aches to keep the secret away from Sarah. This shot was made to seem that the husband was about to break the news just before the unexpected happens from the husband not keeping his eyes on the road.

Page 7: SCENE ANALYSIS

The following scene showed to be a wide angle shot where we are given a view of Sarah and her husband, it is just like the shot before but this time with the parents at the sides of the screen they have replaced the daughter with the car approaching, this was a implied scene that Marshal set up implying that the daughter was going to be killed by the car. With sort of an over the shoulder shot we are given a sort of close up on both characters as well as the car that comes out of nowhere. Here whiteness Sarah confronting her husband saying that he seemed distant and this must of threw him off guard as he completely forgets to still look out. This quickly shows the approach of the car to then swerve towards the car the family is in.

Page 8: SCENE ANALYSIS

Here we are given extremely quick shots showing the crash at real time speed showing many angles. To the audience this would be shown as quick as flashes but it would be something they would have not missed being very bold shots that would be the main part on shocking and scaring his audience, it shows a great amount of detail of the whole car crash. These scenes was given major effect from the sounds played, we here sharp and loud sounds of the wheels skidding, metal colliding, glass breaking and the sound of the poles piercing flesh. The first shot shows a mid shot of the cars colliding, the image below and to the left shows a close up on the pipes going through the other cars front window then at the bottom we have a close up on the pipe going through the husbands head showing a lot of blood being splattered.

Page 9: SCENE ANALYSIS

The final shot of the first disruption shown in the film ends with a overhead view shot that slowly pulls away (pans out) from the close up section of the crash to show a clear view of the disaster caused. This would be allowing the audience to see the blood pouring on the floor from the back of the car implying the daughter has been killed, we also see clearly that the cars engine is all smoking up showing the damages to the cars. This shot showed to the contrast from all the fast cuts showed before allowing the audience to take in the shock.

THE HOSPITAL SCENEOVERVIEWThe next disruption is shown at the hospital, instead of a sort of physical disruption this was more of a mental disruption that happens to Sarah waking up to the shockfrom the death of her daughter and husband, we see Sarah traumatised with panic.

SCENE ANALYSISThe first scene of this shows a wide close up on Sarahin her hospital bed. We see that these scenes showed to be dark and given a green filter giving everything a ill effect, this affect was implemented by Neil Marshal to show nothing would be the same again for Sarah. In this shot we are given the chance to see her facial expression and her cuts from the crash. From this close up we see that Sarah looks very confused yet scared like she's been left in the dark.

We then watch Sarah get out of her hospital be to then enter the corridor still keeping the green filter but given more of a stronger contrast showing this is what it looks like to Sarah. This shot is carried out with a wide angle with a slow zoom to a mid shot on Sarah as she stands in the middle of the corridor. Here we see the light further back turning off showing isolation.

We then see the follow up of close up with on Sarah’s face as a dolly zoom with the camera pulling in whilst the lens zooms out done as a camera trick to see how narrow the corridor is. This was done brilliantly as it was a technique that showed Sarah’s mind of realisation with an unsettling feeling.

Page 11: SCENE ANALYSIS

From the dolly zoom we are brought to a wide shot wereNeil captures Sarah running away from the lights that started turning off behind her that is contrasted to complete darkness. This showed to keep the theme of Sarah being on her own isolated as she has been left withnothing from the death of her husband and daughter, she is shown to be running at we expect she is trying to get away from this feeling to find something real as she lookslike she is dreaming.

This shot expresses loneliness physically and metaphorically watching the darkness closing in on her. The camera turns around to show Sarah running away from the darkness quickly catches up to her as she runs.

Before we see the last light close on Sarah for complete darkness we see Sarah run into her close friend Beth’s arms shown drastically, we see that she is in complete devastation as she grab holds of Beth as she cries. This again is a is a wide shot were we see a complete change to the filter looking back to normal with no greens, here we see the white being quite powerful from the change where this would mean the appearance of Beth was where Sarah woke up from this dreaminess feeling. With this shot we are able to see Sarah’s break down of emotion. From analysis we would see Sarah to be quite disturbed, having realised what had happened we are watching her running in her hospital clothes where her eyes are kind of blacked out, this made the audience to keep a look out of her as throughout the film she witnesses strange occurrences.

Page 12: SCENE ANALYSIS

ENTERING THE CAVEIn this scene we see all the women enter the cave with a little disruption as the last person coming down the rope came down at a unsafe speed shocking the audience. With them entering a cave this scene shows tat the women are purely isolated. This scene shows a little light for the people to show what the cave is like, with general knowledge a cave would seem really scary to the ordinary which would be the majority of the audience as it is deep underground that’s nothing but pure darkness, if you get injured you would be in a serious amount of trouble as in the scenes that came up that’s exactly what happened.

Page 13: SCENE ANALYSIS

THE LEG INJURYIn the featured scenes we see Holly fall through a whole in the cave failed to be saved by her friend. She ends up falling through this whole that turned out to be quite deep where Holly ends up breaking her leg with a clear snap.

Shown above this is a mid shot of when Holly first see’s her own leg bone being snapped as a splint. For us this is also the first time we see the damage caused to Holly as well as the sort of environment she is in, we are able to see that it is dark and damp where we clearly see that she is in the worst possible place to be when breaking her leg.

This is a disruption as being the audience we see the horrific/scrutinizing pain that is caused to Holly, the impact shot put us in the position to process the amount of pain and panic she must be in with the environment she is in.

Page 14: SCENE ANALYSIS

We are then given a extreme close up on the break of the bone giving a more intense view of the damage caused. We see the bone sticking out of her leg with blood on it, the break of the bone is given a sharp shape so this also would be playing with emotion saying how sharp the pain is, this is a close up on how bad the situation is.

Page 15: SCENE ANALYSIS

It then follows on to give a mid of Holly laying down on the floor uncomfortably in pain, this shot allows us to see her reactions from her discovering the trouble she it going to be in and the trouble she is going to have throughout this journey through the cave. We are able to watch Holly scream for help in excruciating pain being at the bottom of the whole, she looks up to see if she can still see her friends at the top. The only light here given is from her torch so the shot kind of seems a bit dark but obviously with props she has been given a little more light so we are aware of what's happening.

Page 16: SCENE ANALYSIS

Here with the shot on top we are given various close ups on Holly’s friends faces showing us their facial expressions to be serious as they are all trying to help Holly as quick as possible as they all come down the whole to discover how serious of a situation they are in on making sure Holly is able to make it through the cave. Neil Marshal may have done this in a way to be foreshadowing of what is to come later on in the film, with Holly breaking her leg we are given to believe they are in a bigger amount of trouble trying to get out alive. We are not given fast paced shot here, they have been filmed at normal speed but the way it has been filmed the women are all working at a fast pace getting her back to recovery as soon as possible.

Finally we have the close up on Holly’s face to the reaction of her friend saying that she need to bone to be pushed back into place. We are given a clear view showing Holly’s shock and seeing that she accepted her friends to push the bone back in. The way this has been shot is to draw us into her eyes were we can see fear, blood and grases. We are given a more deeper contrast on what is about to come through the film, this would be more dangerous challenges.
