Cyber Courses (Grades 9-12 credited courses)

SCCS has been offering credit courses via the internet since 2000. These courses have no face to face component and all material is delivered via an internet online learning platform. This platform makes it possible to create a vibrant online learning environment for high school students. Students can take between one and five online courses at a time. The start date for these courses is flexible and students will be given 150 calendar days to complete the required material. All courses are written based on Saskatchewan Curriculum and credits are given through the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School. Although SCCS courses are all designed using the same learning platform, the amount of flexibility in course assignment deadlines is dictated by the instructors.

This session will provide an in depth look at the Cyber School high school courses.

Hybrid courses (Grades 9-12 credited courses)

Taking the on-line courses developed by the talented cyber school teachers and using them in a face to face classroom, you have what is called a hybrid course. The courses can support or be used as the actual course in a face to face classroom. The courses designed in cyber school can be used free of charge by the teaching staff of the Saskatoon Catholic System.

Some suggested uses for cyber courses in the f2f classroom.

* Supporting your Face to Face teaching * Use as your face to face course (must have access to a computer lab) * Use it as resource for developing your face to face course * Use the communication tools to enhance your face to face course communication. * Use online testing as practice test for students.

This session will show examples of hybrid courses and how they can be used.

Communication Hubs

The learning platform used by SCCS has some great built in communication tools.Using these online tools you can create communication hubs. These hubs can be used as methods of sharing information, having online asynchronous discussions as well as synchronous chats. Busy teachers today find it difficult to gather to meet. The answer is communication hubs. Sharing, training, and communicating can all be done via the hubs. The Hubs have also been used to create a controlled environment with internet students sharing communication. Students from different cities or countries can be brought together to share.

This session will provide the tools needed to use a communication hub effectively.

Cyber Planets (Grades 2-8)Cyber Planets are essentially Learning Communities for students in grades 2-8. Cyber Planets are housed in the secure online learning platform Web CT. Cyber Planets are web based and can be accessed with a valid username and password from any computer connected to the internet. Presently, Cyber Planets are being used by classrooms teachers as an “Online Classroom”, whereby only students in that particular classroom can log into their Cyber Planet. The Cyber Planets include secure e-mail, chatrooms, bulletin boards and calendars that can all be monitored by the classroom teacher.

Cyber Planets house a multitude educational web sites and activities both specific to grade and subject area. We call this area “Subject Stuff”.Cyber Planets let students explore educational activities to aid in their knowledge development. They also allow communication and collaboration between classmates, between student and teachers and so forth.

This session will provide an in depth look at Cyber Planets and their function.

Technology Lessons (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

These lessons and projects fulfill each component of the technology scope and sequence for the grades 3, 4, 5 & 8 along with some of grade 6 and 7 levels.

This session will provide an in depth look at the technology lessons and their function.

Math Resources (7&8)

The grade 8 Mathematics resources are designed to be a supplemental resource for students to use, to help reinforce Math concepts. The resources are organized by strand and then by unit, with each unit placed parallel to the objectives in the curriculum, so they are easy to find and easy to use in addition to what is being taught in class.

Each unit contains a short lesson, as well as ten interactive questions to help reinforce the math objectives. Some of the features include moveable protractors, click and drag objects for studying similarity and congruency, interactive time zone questions and matching, multiple choice and calculated activities among the dynamic resources offered. This session will provide an in depth look at the math resources and their function.

Learning Communities Online Educator Learning Communities  serve as a collection of useful resources for grade levels K - 12 and encompass all subjects; from Physical Education to Aboriginal/First Nations Education. The resources are for both online uses as well as printable copies for classroom use.

The Learning Communities are housed in the Web CT secure platform. Teachers log into their respective Learning Community. Once logged into the community teachers have access to e-mail, chat rooms and bulletin boards. Teachers are then able to communicate with other colleagues who teach at the same level. Not only are teachers able to communicate and collaborate but they also have the opportunity to use any unit or resource found in the Learning Community.

Teachers are able to send their own curricular units or resources to Cyber School where they are inserted into the proper Learning Community by grade and subject. These units are then open for use by anyone registered in the Learning Community.

This session will provide an in depth look at the Learning Communities.

Educator Tutorials

This area has been developed based on questions that have arisen with regards to computer services in the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division and the Web CT courses available at the Cyber School. The tutorials are available in two formats, the first being in viewlet (video) format, the second in a printable handout format.

This session will provide an in depth look at the Educator Tutorials.

Blogs (individual or for an entire class of students ie Media Studies & School Web sites)

Blogs are easily updated web sites to share information with students, parents and the community. It is as simple as typing in an email. You can even have people subscribe to your blog so that they receive email updates when you add something new to your blog.

This session will allow participants to work on building and effectively using their own blog.
