Southend Association of Voluntary Services seeks to provide regular
and relevant training to our members. To find out more or to book any
of these training sessions, please call 01702 356000 or email
[email protected], or simply complete and return the
booking form enclosed (if provided).
All training will be held at Southend Association of Voluntary Services,
29-31 Alexandra Street, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 1BW unless otherwise
stated.
Training terms and conditions:
All training courses, unless otherwise stated, will be held at SAVS, 29-31 Alexandra
Street, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 1BW. SAVS does not have a car park, but there
are pay and display car parks close to the building. SAVS is also a 5 minute walk from
Southend Central rail station, a 20 minute walk from Southend Victoria rail station
and a 5 minute walk from Southend bus station.
Booking forms must be received by SAVS at least 7 working days before the start of
the course.
Please notify us of any dietary requirements as soon as possible.
We ask that you arrive in time for the start of the course. Late arrivals may not be
permitted to attend the training and will not be entitled to a refund.
If you wish to cancel your place on the training, cancellations have to be received by
SAVS 5 working days before the training date in order to receive a refund.
In cases of extreme weather conditions, please assume the training is still going
ahead unless you receive notification from a member of SAVS staff. In exceptional
circumstances, SAVS management may grant refunds for those who cannot attend
training due to adverse weather conditions.

Crowdfunding 29 February 2016 – 2pm – 4.30pm
Gemma Cartwright, Funding Development Officer
Crowdfunding is an innovative alternative funding tool that enables you to reach out
and engage a wide range of people - and if they back your project they become your
supporters. This course will give an overview of what crowdfunding is, the different
platforms available, what inspires donors, lenders or investors, how to craft a pitch,
marketing your campaign and to think through how it might work for you.

Recruiting Volunteers 10 March 2016 - 9.30am to 1pm
Emily Middlemast, Volunteer Centre Co-ordinator
Recruiting Volunteers provides a comprehensive overview of where to start when
thinking about involving volunteers; what policies and procedures should be in place
before involving volunteers; volunteers and the law; how to promote your volunteer role
on Volunteeressex.org to achieve the best results and much more. It is recommended
that attendees also join the retaining volunteers course on the 24th March.

Retaining Volunteers 24 March 2016 - 9.30am to 1pm

Retaining volunteers gives you a wealth of information about how to ensure your
volunteers find their role fulfilling and stay loyal; the course covers,
understanding their motivations for volunteering; induction and training; support and
supervision; how to deal with unsuitable volunteers and much more. This course follows
on from recruiting volunteers and it is recommended attendees complete both.

Getting the most out of Facebook and Twitter 14 April 2016 – 10am to 1pm
James Gray, Caraway Communications
This half-day course introduces practical strategies for maximising your social media presence. You'll be
introduced to current social media best practice and develop a better understanding of what your
followers expect from you.
Through practical exercises, group discussion and tutor presentation, the course will cover:
Building relationships through social media
Creating effective profiles, including bios and images
Finding and creating quality content to share online
Integrating social media with offline communications

Event Fundraising in the Local Community 18 May 2016 – 10am to 1pm
Gemma Cartwright – Funding Development Officer & Dan Turpin – Information and Membership Services Officers This session will help you to address the best ways of using local community support to
help you to raise money through events, as well as considerations for how to put the
event on. If you’re looking to put on a successful fundraising event, or want to know
how to publicise your work, this is the session for you.

Dealing with Aggressive Behaviour 9 June 2016 – 9.30am – 12.30pm
Voluntary Sector Training
When confronted with aggressive or challenging behaviour it is easy for us to respond in a like
way. Learn how to overcome this natural reaction and develop the skills and techniques to bring
the interaction round to ‘adult’ and constructive dialog is possible with the knowledge and use of
assertiveness and communication skills.
Overview This course enables participants to develop different techniques to resolve conflict. By exploring different types of behaviour and the types of responses this behaviour elicits we will be able to identify the most effective ways of dealing with disruptive or aggressive behaviours.

We’ll cover: · assessing your own response to aggressive or challenging behaviour · identifying different types of aggressive or challenging behaviour · the importance of body language and personal space in conflict situations · cultural considerations · conflict resolution models and communication skills · warning signs, prevention and risk assessments · de-escalation skills Benefits to you By the end of the session you will feel much more confident in your ability to reduce tension enabling constructive dialogue taking into consideration the needs, wellbeing and rights of all concerned. The course will be highly interactive with a range of individual, small and large group exercises. An Introduction to Safeguarding Children 23 June 2016 – 2pm to 4.30pm

This introductory course will cover how to recognise the signs and
symptoms of child abuse or neglect, and how to communicate your
concerns to ensure children are safeguarded effectively.

Partnership Working 7 July 2016 – 10am – 4pm
Voluntary Sector Training
For those organisations whose only option to secure funding is to work in partnership with others,
there are a number of pitfalls to be aware of. Organisations must take steps to protect themselves and this course explains, in detail, what must be done. The second part of the course
covers how to use the partnership to win contracts and/or secure funding. The course is
interactive with exercises for delegates to undertake and a set of handouts to support their
learning. Aimed at CEOs, Trustees or anyone involved in commissioning, procurement or fundraising. We'll cover:
different types of partnerships

how to begin negotiating with prospective partners
partnership agreements
why partnerships fail
tools for resolving problems
evaluating partnerships
using partnerships to secure funding
using partnerships to secure contracts
Those attending this course will have a clearer understanding of how partnerships should operate
and of the documents that should be in place to protect an organisation’s interests. By learning
the facts about partnership working, delegates will be able to make the right choice about HOW
to work with other organisations and what they should consider before coming to a decision.
Delegates will also understand the added value partnerships can bring to funders and
commissioners increasing the chances of success when it comes to winning contracts and grants
and improving the chances of long term sustainable futures for the organisations involved.

Evidencing the need for your work 13 July 2016 – 10am to 1pm
Gemma Cartwright – Funding Development Officer Do you struggle when having to answer the question “how do you know there is a need
for your project?” posed by many funders? Would you like to know where to find many
hidden statistical gems? This session will help you to develop both the qualitative and
quantitative evidence you need to make your funding bids more successful.

applications? Whether you are new to fundraising or just need a ‘refresher’, this session
will help you to: search and choose appropriate funders; avoid application pitfalls; ‘sell’
your organisation in terminology funders will understand and provide you with plenty of
hints and tips to make your applications successful.

First Aid 22 September 2016 – 10am - 4pm

This course covers basics of first aid. It is aimed at everyday working situations. At the
end of the course you will have 3 skill test assessments. The certificate is awarded by an
approved organisation and whether to support applications for work; induction,
refresher or to keep safe, this is a course you will find invaluable. Lunch included.

An Introduction to Safeguarding Adults 6 October 2016 – 2pm to 4.30pm

Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2. The course will allow an insight
into the minefield of health and safety: accident statistics and reporting; health and
safety officers; workplace equipment; fire; electricity; first aid; working at height; noise
and vibration; injuries. Whether to support applications for work; induction, refresher or
to keep safe, this is a course you will find invaluable. Lunch included.

Quality For Health
Quality For Health is a brand new, innovative, unique, quality assurance system for the
Voluntary sector. This is the only quality assurance system in the country designed to support
the Voluntary sector to demonstrate the outcomes of their health and wellbeing services.
Quality for health links to national strategic and operational priorities such as NHS three pillars
of quality delivery and Care Quality Commission (CQC) five key questions. Here at SAVs we can
see great benefits for organisations achieving the quality for Health award and are supporting
some organisations to meet the award through our social prescribing service.
SAVS are working with Voluntary action Calderdale to provide a series of workshops to support
organisations meet the requirements of Quality for Health. These training sessions are designed
for organisations working towards quality for health but open to all SAVs members.

part of a positive leadership model. The workshop will also identify how to evidence
these areas for the Quality For Health award.

the Equality Act 2010 when planning and delivering services and to ensure that
services are delivered in a non-discriminatory manner.
