“When we decided to do a microprocessor on our own, I made two great decisions - I gave them two things which National, Intel and Motorola had never given their design teams: the first was no money; the second was no people. The only way they could do it was to keep it really simple.”

Hermann Hausser

Ofsted“Compare performance with others to see where improvements could be made.”

The vast majority of schools have invested heavily in computer networks, running expensive commercial operating systems and standard ‘office’ suites of software. In these schools, the annual licensing costs for each networked computer are eating up a significant proportion of the ICT budget, restricting further expansion… Open source operating systems and software are now a reliable and cost-effective solution, enabling the few schools that choose this route to achieve excellent value for money. A few schools have used open source software for establishing a virtual learning environment, enabling them to obtain several years’ worth of development with no licensing costs.

Ofsted

‘‘Challenge why and how a service is being provided.”

All the schools in the sample had chosen to purchase a package of ‘office’ software that is standard in the business world. On the one hand, this has the benefit of introducing students to software they are likely to encounter in the future; on the other, it may actually be hindering the development of their skills. … In the small number of schools that had deliberately chosen to provide a mixture of operating systems, students met a greater variety of software and were better equipped to cope with rapidly changing technologies.
