AFGHANISTAN

To: Ambassador of India, Kabul- Afghanistan Sub: Justice for all convicted workers particularly 13 of them who face with death or life imprisonment sentences H. E. Mr. Manpreet Vohra We strongly protest over the unfair charges of the 13 Indian trade unionists from Maruti Suzuki threatened by death sentence (or life imprisonment) next March 17. The workers and trade union activists at the Maruti-Suzuki, Manesar factory, an Indian arm/plant of the Japanese Suzuki multinational corporation, who were arrested and charged in connection with the incidents that took place at this factory in 2012, in which a factory manager died, have just been tried in court. 117 of them were acquitted and 31 were convicted of various offenses, including 13 who were convicted of murder. Without availability of enough evidence to prove the guilty, convicting workers to death or life imprisonment is a brutal act against humanity and justice. Left Radical of Afghanistan (LRA) requests you and the government of India to release all accused workers and lift the murder charges over the 13 trade unionists. Yours sincerely Nasir Loyand General secretary Left Radical of Afghanistan (LRA)

BANGLADESH

To The Ambassador of India Plot No. 1-3, Park Road, Baridhara, Dhaka-1212, Bangladesh. Mr. Harsh Vardhan Shringla We received information from Indian trade unions NTUI and MSWU about an antiworker political verdict for the Maruti Suzuki workers case. The workers and trade union activists at the Maruti Suzuki, Manesar factory, an Indian arm/plant of the Japanese Suzuki multinational corporation, who were arrested and charged in connection with the incidents that took place at this factory in 2012, in which a factory manager died, have just been tried in court. 117 of them were acquitted and 31 were convicted of various offenses, including 13 who were convicted of murder — which in India is punishable by death or lifeimprisonment. Finality of this quantum of punishment will be out on March 17, in the Gurgaon Sessions Court. Of the 13 convicted of murder — convictions in which no evidence was produced to prove their guilt — 11 were leaders of the MSWU, the independent union that was formed in Maruti and that management sought to break through violence. In the Verdict, 13 workers among the workers leadership have been charged under Sections 302 (murder), 307, 436, 427, 325, 323, 341, 452, 201, 120B. It has been clearly established in Court by the Defense that murder or attempt to murder do not hold. They face potential life term sentences, while the Prosecution demanding for blood, even asked for death sentence in their statements to the media. It is clear that the entire Union body of MSWU has been Specifically targeted, despite no evidences, only because they were

Page 3: SAVE THE LIVES OF THE MARUTI 13! · the Maruti Suzuki workers case. The workers and trade union activists at the Maruti Suzuki, Manesar factory, an Indian arm/plant of the Japanese

vocal for workers rights. They have been targeted because they have been the leadership of the struggle for Trade Union rights against the contract system, the horrible working conditions, the low wages, and regime of exploitation and repression by the company. These 13 include workers Jiyalal and the entire Union body of the Maruti Suzuki Workers Union, who are Ram Meher, Sandeep Dhillon, Ram Bilas, Sarabjeet Singh, Pawan Kumar, Sohan Kumar, Ajmer Singh, Suresh Kumar, Amarjeet, Dhanraj Bambi, Pradeep Gujjar and Yogesh. We consider the court's decision as a rough attempt to violate the workers` of Maruti Suzuki rights, and in general to violate right of all the working people in India to protect their own interests via independent trade unions. We strongly plead: PLEASE SAVE THE LIVES OF THE MARUTI 13, CONDUCT AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION AND FREE ALL IMPRISONED WORKERS, WHO ARE NOT PROVED TO BE GUILTY OF THE CRIME! Rafiqujjaman: President. Shamimara: Generel Secretary. Sanzeed Hossain: Joint Secretary. Mujibur Rahman: Secretary (Dinajpur Section) BANGLADESH NATIONAL WORKERS FEDERATION (BJSF)

BRAZIL

GREECE

The Executive Committee of the Hospital Doctors in Thrace, Greece, has unanimously decided to express our solidarity to all convicted Maruti workers and to demand by the Indian Authorities Justice, freedom and to drop all of the charges against the imprisoned workers. We strongly support the international campaign to save the lives of the Maruti 13 launched by IWC to whom we communicate our decision kindly asking to distribute and use it with the most fruitful way. On behalf of EC The President of EINOKYTH: Christos Dragoumanis The Secretary General: Miltos Papaioakeim = = = Ms. M. Manimekalai Ambassador from India in Athens 3, Kleanthous Str. 10674 Athens Greece E-mail: [email protected] Dear Ambassador M. Manimekalai, We, the undersigned supporters of labor and democratic rights, write you this Open Letter to urge you and your government to take immediate action to save the lives of 13 trade unionists of the Maruti-Suzuki corporation, who were arrested and charged in connection with the incidents that took place at the company's Manesar factory in 2012, in which a factory manager died. As you most certainly are aware, the imprisoned Maruti workers have just been tried in court; 117 of them (who had already spent four years in prison) were acquitted, but 31 were convicted of various offenses, including 13 who were convicted of murder -- which, as you know, is punishable by death or life imprisonment. The sentencing is scheduled for Friday, March 15. We have read the appeal from the Provisional Working Committee of the Maruti Suzuki Workers Union and the March 10 statement by the New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI). We agree fully that these workers have been convicted on trumped-up charges for their trade union activity. No evidence was provided to link any of these workers to the unfortunate death of a factory manager. Eleven of the 13 facing the most serious charges were leaders of the MSWU, the independent union that was formed in Maruti and that management sought to break through violence. We urge you to relay to your government in India our call for justice for all the convicted Maruti workers, and more particularly for the 13 Maruti trade unionists, whose lives are in grave danger. We call upon you and your government to save their lives and to drop all the bogus charges against all those convicted unjustly. We call upon you and your government to free all the imprisoned Maruti workers. Sincerely,

MAURITIUS

To: H.E. Anup Kumar Mudgal, Indian High Commissioner, Port Louis, Mauritius Dear Sir, LALIT party in Mauritius is making an urgent appeal to the Indian Government through your office to save the 31 workers from the Maruti-Suzuki, Manesar Factory who were recently convicted of various offenses, follo i g a st ike, a d follo i g the death, at the ti e, of the a tio s of o e of the Fa to ’s Di ectors. I personally met trade union delegates from the Maruti-Suzuki union last year in Mumbai. It has yesterday been reported to LALIT that, while there was no evidence produced to prove any link between the unfortunate death of a director following an incident in the Maruti-Suzuki fa to i a d the o ke s’ actions, yet 13 people, of whom 11 are trade union leaders, have been convicted of murder in this case. They therefore run the risk of the death penalty or life imprisonment. This follows their legitimate struggle for better work conditions in a difficult epoch for working people world-wide. LALIT now joins the International Call to save the lives of the Maruti 13. We also call for all 31 workers to be freed. Yours sincerely, Rada Kistnasamy LALIT 15 March, 2017

To the Ambassador of the Republic of India to Russian Federation, Mr. Pankaj Saran

Dear Mr. Ambassador! We received information from Indian trade unions NTUI and MSWU about an anti-worker political verdict for the Maruti Suzuki workers case, which worries us as a part of international movement of workers, social activists and trade unionists. We kindly plead you to bring the following information to the attention of the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Damodardas Modi. 117 of them were acquitted and 31 were convicted of various offenses, including 13 who were convicted of murder — which in India is punishable by death or life imprisonment. They face potential life term sentences, while the Prosecution asked for death sentence in their statements to the media. It is clear that the entire Union body of MSWU has been specifically targeted, despite no evidences, only because they were vocal for workers rights. They have been targeted because they have been the leadership of the struggle for Trade Union rights against the contract system, the horrible working conditions, the low wages, and regime of exploitation and repression by the company.

Unfortunately, we have no other choice but to consider the court's decision as an attempt to violate the workers` of Maruti Suzuki rights, and in general to violate right of all the working people in India to protect their own interests via independent trade unions. The sentence is to be finalised on Friday 17 March 2017. We agree fully that these workers have been convicted on trumped-up charges for their trade union activity. DEBORAH JOHNSON Mr. Navtej Sarna Ambassador from India to the United States 2536 Massachusetts Ave., NW Washington, DC Email: [email protected] Re: Case of Maruti 13 Facing Sentencing on March 17 Dear Ambassador Navtej Sarna, Please do not destroy your people's right to negotiate their labor concerns when they are acting in an organized, civilized, and intelligent way by participating in labor unions. All countries, including Americans, enjoy the pleasure of participating in unions. Why the death penalty for your people who are the backbone of your economy? Please do not execute your people...union organizers, for seeking to exercise their rights to negotiate. The

world is watching to determine if your government will insist upon acting uncivilized to your workers and

union organizers by executing them!. Your workers and union organizers are demonstrating the highest form of civilized behavior, they are inviting your businesses and concerned people to sit at the negotiation table to discuss all parties financial concerns. Why kill your people for that? What is the message your government wants to convey to the world about India... by killing innocent people who only want to express their financial concerns and hardships? Be Positive, Productive, Peaceful and Progressive! Deborah Johnson
