COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER

Community service is an important part of the 4-H program. Research tells us 4-H Youth are 3-4 times more likely to contribute to their communities compared to youth in other out-of-school programs (4-H Study of Positive Youth Development). Every month we will include Community Service ideas in the newsletter. This month we will focus on animals. 1. Plan a special awareness event during Be Kind to

Animals Week in May. 2. Organize a community dog wash. 3. Volunteer to clean out animal shelters at homeless

shelter. 4. Collect and sort newspapers to donate to a local

animal shelter. 5. Collect food and supplies needed for a local zoo,

animal shelter or food bank. 6. Collect food and supplies needed for a local zoo,

animal shelter or food bank. 7. Adopt a Zoo Animal. 8. Learn about pet therapy and do pet therapy at local

nursing homes or child care centers. 9. Find homes in shelters for abandoned pets. 10. Talk to a Wildlife Conservationist or Game and Parks

official. Check out their volunteer opportunities. 11. Clean wooden duck house before each nesting season. 12. Care for a neighbor's pet. 13. Find out about volunteer opportunities at a local

wildlife sanctuary or survival center. Organize a pet show for a local nursing home.

14. With the support of a vet clinic, organize a neuter and spay campaign to get animals neutered and spayed at a reduced rate.

15. Set up donation centers for animal products to be donated to needy.

16. Learn about pet therapy and do pet therapy with your animal at nursing homes and day care centers.

ANIMAL PROJECT UPDATES

ANIMAL SCIENCE COMMITTEE MEETING The 4-H Animal Science Committee is open to any youth or adults who are interested in helping develop, plan, and deliver educational animal science activities, events and meetings. The Animal Science Committee will meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month. The next meetings will be on Thursday, April 14 and May 12 at 7PM in the UWEX Conference Room on the 3rd Floor of the West Square Building. These meeting will be held as needed, and information will follow in upcoming newsletters.

HERDSMANSHIP SCORING CHANGE

FOR 2016 SAUK CO JR. FAIR In order to make the 2016 Sauk County Junior Fair more educational, the Animal Science Committee is suggesting that each club develop some sort of an education display. This display should be hands-on, be about the size of a card table, promote your species, and help fair goers understand breeds, uses of our animals, parts of an animal, cuts of meat from your animal, etc. The herdsmanship scoresheet will be modified for 2016 and include 10 points for the educational display. Winter is a GREAT time to work on your educational displays. So get those creative minds working!

SAUK COUNTY MEAT ANIMAL SALE

EDUCATIONAL POINTS It is never too early to start thinking about earning the two minimum meat animal educational points that each youth will need to in order to be in the Meat Animal Sale at the Sauk County Fair. Meat Animal educational points are earned by attending educational events, workshops, clinics, classes, etc. In the past, prizes have been awarded to those youth who have gone above and beyond in earning Meat Animal educational points. Whether or not this will be done for this year has yet to be decided; however, when it is decided, the information will be shared. All youth who hope to participate in the Meat Animal Sale must have two educational points turned into the Sauk County Fair Office by June 15. RABBIT PROJECT MEETINGS

Members may not be able to make every meeting, but should make as many as possible. Questions?, please contact project leaders: Jerry Nicholson at: [email protected], Scott Mueller at: [email protected], or Kim Klicko at: [email protected]

MEAT RABBIT PROJECT INFORMATION There will be a Meat Rabbit meeting on Tuesday April 5 at 7pm in Room B-24 of West Square building. This will count as 1 point towards the meat animal sale educational points for the fair. Bring your young roaster rabbit and or breeding pair to show proof of ownership to be eligible to compete in the meat classes at the fair. We will discuss topics on breeding and raising commercial rabbits. Roaster rabbits are to be 6 months old or less on judging day of fair, fryer rabbits are not over 69 days old. If you breed your rabbits on April 5, the fryers should be 69 days old on judging day at the fair. Remember, rabbits are photoperiodic, when the length of daylight shortens, they are less likely to breed succesfully. You can increase your chances by using artificial light. Fifteen hours of light each day should help a lot. Having them in a warmer building will also help the kits survive during the cold winter months. Good Luck! Scott Mueller

2016 WISCONSIN STATE FAIR MARKET ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION

Youth interested in showing market beef, sheep or swine at the 2016 Wisconsin State Fair will need to get their animal projects DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) by the respective State Fair eligibility deadlines. WLIC is coordinating a statewide DNA/RFID identification program for Wisconsin State Fair. This identification system allows animals which are DNA/RFID identified through the WLIC State Fair program to meet Wisconsin State Fair Identification requirements as long as the process is completed (all forms returned and samples on file) by the respective Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification deadlines (postmark): Sheep: Monday - May 9 Swine: Monday - May 9

How do I get my animals identified? Request DNA/RFID tag identification by going to the WLIC website at www.wiid.org to request your identification supplies. Print out, complete and mail the request form with payment to WLIC. Tags and paperwork are ONLY available through WLIC. The Wisconsin State Fair Office no longer processes DNA/RFID tag requests.
