Leaving EHPS?

As advised in recent newsletters, planning and preparation for the 2019 school year is well underway. If your child is not returning to EHPS in 2019, please advise the school as soon as possible by emailing Mr Perini - click here. Please advise your child’s name and current class, the date of their last day at EHPS (last day of the 2018 school year is Friday 21st December), the reason you’re leaving EHPS, and the school they are enrolled at in 2019.

Next Monday & Tuesday

Monday 5th November is a school day. If your child will be absent from school on this day, ensure you have entered their absence on Compass under the appropriate category.

Tuesday 6th November is the Melbourne Cup public holiday, and therefore the school is closed and students do not attend school on this day.

Students on holidays before end of term or start of new school year

The 2018 school year finishes on Friday 21st December, and the 2019 school year starts on Tuesday 29th January (NOTE: 29th and 30th January are student-free days, so Years 1 to 6 students start on Thursday 31st January; Preps start on Wednesday 6th February).

If your child will finish school before the end of the 2018 school year or will be absent at the start of the 2019 school year (from 29th January), please ensure that you record their absence on Compass.

Our Music Captains really made us all feel so proud with their musical ability, versatility, enthusiasm and their public speaking skills. Yura, Huey and Natalene have been amazing leaders this year, and we thank them for their dedication and hard work.

A special thanks must go to our amazing group of instrumental music teachers that make our program so sought after and prestigious. Coordinated by Alyssa Kennedy, they are a highly skilled and professional team of musicians and teachers. We are so fortunate to have them teaching our children at Essex Heights. They are the reason we have a high quality program at the school.

Finally, a big thank you must go to Tanya Dolence, our talented classroom Music teacher, for her amazing work in preparation of the many choirs and marimba ensembles throughout the year. Tanya leads the meticulous planning and organisation of Showcase as well as the production on the night. Great work and thanks Tanya!

Well done to all at Essex Heights, a great community event!

Indonesian: Years 5/6 Indonesian Projects Monique and Edolie were very proud of their Indonesian project about why we should learn Indonesian. Well done girls.

Essex Heights Cup 5WO celebrated the running of the Essex Heights Cup!!

I look forward to seeing you around the school.

Principal’s Report continued

Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights which is celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere, and will be celebrated on Wednesday 7th November in Australia. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.” Diwali is observed by Diya (oil lamp) and lighting, home decoration, shopping, fireworks, puja (prayers), gifts, feast and sweets. Diwali is also celebrated in Sikhism, Jainism, Newar Buddhism.

To those families in our community who will be celebrating, happy Diwali.

This week in ArtSEL we are learning to avoid jumping to conclusions.

When you jump to conclusions, you make assumptions about what is going. That means you believe you know what is going on in a situation without really having enough information about it. Sometimes when you jump to conclusions, you assume the worst.

You don’t think clearly about the situation and you may react without having all the facts. First stop, name your feeling and calm down. After you have calmed down, try to get some more information before jumping to conclusion.

ArtSEL homelinks reminder Please remind your children to complete their ArtSEL homelinks weekly (Years 5 and 6) and return their folders for the ArtSEL lesson. Please note Year 3's receive ArtSEL homelinks fortnightly.

If you have any questions, please come and see me.

Nikki Olsen

Living Eggs in Year 2

As part of the unit on growth and change, Year 2 students had the opportunity to have living eggs delivered to the school two weeks ago in an incubator. They waited very patiently for three days watching the eggs in the incubator and hoping something would happen. The first signs of life started with some of the eggs rocking, and even hearing chirping coming from inside the egg. Finally, the first chick chipped a tiny hole in the egg and the students were able to see its tiny beak inside. The eggs were left overnight and we were excited to be greeted by five fluffy chicks the next morning that hatched overnight! Last Friday was a very exciting day as the students had the privilege of being able to watch the last three eggs hatch live in front of their eyes. It was an amazing experience for them being able to see a tiny, wet chick break free from its egg which we were lucky enough to capture on video.

This experience has given the students a firsthand opportunity to see nature up close while learning valuable information about animals and their development. This was for most students (and teachers) the first time they had ever seen a chick hatch out of an egg and they felt very lucky to be able to be there for that.

Mrs. Hipwell will be taking the female chicks home so we will be able to see their continuing growth and development and even the eggs they will start laying in the upcoming months.

Some quotes directly from the students about their experience with the chickens:

“I learned a lot about chickens when I watched them hatch”

“It was really cool it was my first time watching a chick hatch out of an egg”

“I felt really happy when they were out of the eggs and they were really fluffy and really cute”

“I was happy because we got eggs and got to see them hatch”

Thank you! The Year 2 Team

Mrs O’Connor received this message from Sean Gordon, CEO and Foundation of SchoolAid:

Wow! You guys Rock! Thank you for this message Alexandra.

What a top photo and what an amazing and generous result for this appeal. I will post this one on our Page asap.

We have already raised approx $120,000 with a lot of the funds coming to us via EFT and cheques (so the crowdfunding website at SchoolAid will need updating manually once we close the appeal).

Update coming soon, but first $20,000 has been delivered to the NSW towns of Lake Cargelligo and Naradhan and we have 5 x the money by dollar matching a Rotary Club in Corrimal then using a voucher system in the towns to multiply the impact of every dollar as it moves through local businesses. We even sent messages of hope from students in Mackay that were hand written and received with the emotion you can probably imagine.

We have just decided to extend the appeal for Term 4 as many schools didn’t get to have a crack at this, others want to do a bit extra for Christmas gifts and back to school supplies and because it just hasn’t rained yet! We may even reload the whole effort for 2019 once we see the situation over summer.

Please share my personal congratulations to all in your community on this wonderful outcome! My plan was always 10,000 schools x $100 for a Million dollar result. Your one school has covered 43 in that equation!!

Afterscare Halloween Party

The Aftercare Halloween Party was a great success. We trust the children that attended the Halloween Afterscare Party had a great time. I would like to take a moment to thank all the Before and After School Care staff for all their extra hard work during our Halloween celebrations. I would also like to thank Betty Ciorciari for baking such a magnificent Halloween Cake. It was also fantastic that so many teachers and parents joined in the fun.

New Menu

The new structured menu seems to be a resounding hit with the children. We are following “The Australian Dietary Guidelines.” To ensure the children are provided with the highest quality nutrition that is coupled with a variety of interesting and tasty snacks. We invite families feedback in relation to the new menu.
