COACH SPEAK: CRAIG ALBERNAZ Each week we'll get to know the new Giants coaches with a few fun ques-tions in this space. This week it's Bullpen and Catching Coach Craig

Albernaz.

You were born in Massachusetts, went to col-lege in Florida and spent most of your base-ball career in the Midwest or East Coast. Had you visited San Francisco much prior to taking this job? If not, what are some places in the Bay Area you were looking forward to explor-ing on an off day?

CA: When I was 12 years old, I played in the Bronco League World Series in Monterey, CA. When the tournament was over, my family and I stayed a couple days in SF. During our first trolley ride, our trolley actually t-boned car. So that was an experience in its own. The only experience I was looking forward to in SF was a packed house at Oracle Park. Hopefully that experience can eventually happen here soon.

Your wife is a pretty talented artist. Do you like to draw as well?

CA: My wife, Genevieve, is a stud! She’s ex-tremely talented. I overachieved in every as-pect of life and that included my spouse. Need-lessly to say, I have zero artistic ability.

Do you have a worst minor league bus and/or travel story experience?

CA: I really don’t have a story but there were a couple situations that weren’t ideal when I was playing. The worst was arriving in the morning at the next city's hotel after busing through the night and they don’t rooms available until later in the day. Now you have the whole team sleep-ing in the lobby which isn’t ideal for anybody.

You are on a Major League coaching staff for the first time after spending nine minor league seasons as a player and another five as a coach/coordinator on the player development side. What was the feeling like when Gabe of-fered you the position to come on board?

CA: The day Kap offered me the position was a rollercoaster of emotions. Having spent your entire playing and coaching career in the minor leagues, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be for-tunate enough to be in the big leagues. Where-ever I was at, my sole focus was trying to be the best coach I could and make an impact. When everything was official, my first call was to my parents. They made a ton of sacrifices to allow me to chase my dream.

SEASON TICKET MEMBER HEROES OF THE WEEK Each week we'll highlight a Giants season ticket member

or members who are stepping up during this tremendous time of need. This week we salute the work of season ticket member Melissa Larsen.

From December through April 30, Larsen was work-ing as an Ob Hospitalist (an Ob Hospitalist is a hospital based Ob-gyn physician taking care of women who are in labor, pregnancy complications) in Berkeley and Sa-linas. During this time she was taking care of a number of COVID + pregnant women - some have not been sick while a couple have had challenges. Since the start of May, she has been deployed to cover similar programs in Southern California.

The Giants scrub hat that she wears while working with mothers who are delivering, often without much family these days, serves as a conversation piece. She wears her SF Giants scrub hat, and it lifts her spirits. One of her co-workers at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center made it for her and it re-verses to the 49ers.

Larsen has two sons: Alex Morris, who is an ER nurse at Marin General, and JD Morris, who is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle.

ORACLE PARK BULLPEN UPDATE

Construction continues on the relocated bullpen mounds at Oracle Park. The new Giants’ and visi-tors’ bullpens will now be located on either side of The Garden at Oracle Park, just below the left field and centerfield bleachers. A portion of the Giants’ bullpen will be incorporated into the Gar-den at Oracle Park and fans will now have direct views from the Garden into the Giants bullpen.

GIANTS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT | TYLER ROGERS Born and raised in Littleton, CO., a

suburb of Denver. His father, Scott, is a career firefighter

and currently Operations Chief at West Metro Fire Rescue in Lakewood, Col. He is also the director of the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation.

His mother, Amy, is executive as-sistant at the Arvada (Col.) fire de-

partment. His identical twin broth-er Taylor Rogers is the closer for the Minnesota

- wait for it - Twins. They are the 10th set of twins to play in Ma-jor League Baseball; the last was former Giant Damon Mi-nor and his brother Ryan. (Damon last

played in 2004 and is now a hitting coach in the Gi-ants’ minor league system.)

The Rogers’ brothers say they would have become fire-fighters had they not succeed-ed in baseball. “There are four generations of firefighters in my family,” Tyler says. “My brother and I would be the fifth. Firefighting is in our family’s blood. Somehow Denver hasn’t burned down yet. For 100 years, there has

been a Rogers in a fire station in Den-ver.”

Tyler’s father and uncle have each served more than 30 years. His grand-father served 38 years with Denver fire. His great-grandfather served as did his great-great-grandfather, who emigrated from Ireland and came to Denver in a covered wagon.

Tyler even took fire science classes at Garden City (Kansas) Community College, which has a renowned pro-gram.

The brothers have also started the Rogers Family Foundation, dedi-cated to the mental wellness of first responders. “The military has done great job, bringing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to the fore-front, letting people in the military know it’s okay to seek help,” Taylor said. “There’s a misconception that all firefighters do is go into burning buildings. That’s a small portion of what they actually do. The things they do affect their mental state.”

Taylor said more firefighters die by suicide than they do in the line of duty. “That’s an alarming statistic,” he said. “I asked, was there a way I could help? A lot of times, for firefighters to talk to a clinical psychologist, they would have to pay out of pocket, so they don’t go. I said, ‘Let’s take care of that and

make sure they’re getting the help they need.”

Tyler had a good shot at making the major league roster out of spring training in 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic shut the season down. He and his fiancée, Jennifer Ryan, stayed in Arizona where Tyler could keep working out and indulge his passion for golf. Their wedding is scheduled for November 2020. Tyler, of course, asked Taylor to be his best man.

FAMILY INFORMATION- Father, Scott, is a career fire-fighter and currently an Operations Chief at West Metro Fire Rescue in Lakewood, CO.

- Mother, Amy, is an executive assis-tant at the Arvada (Col.) fire depart-ment.

- His identical twin brother Taylor Rogers is the closer for the Minne-sota Twins

- Is engaged to Jennifer Ryan with their wedding scheduled for Novem-ber later this year.

PRESS BOX EATS WITH CHEF LONGORI-YUM I grew up on these. My Bubby and now my mom, who is our kids’ Bubby, have a few classic Ukrainian dishes that we’d cook for comfort. They are

always simple with few ingredients and straight forward. Less sauce is optional, but we always like it kind of soupy. This dish always takes me back to my childhood.

BUB'S HALUPSHI Boil the cabbage in a large pot for 5 minutes

until the cabbage leaves easily pull away from the core

Combine ground beef, onions, cooked rice and salt and pepper. Mix until thoroughly in-corporated.

Make the sauce by combining and mixing all ingredients. Pour a little in the meat mixture

to give some flavor. Pour a little in the bottom of the large pot you will use to cook.

Once cabbage is separated from the head, place a generous amount in the leaf and roll it up to surround the meat with cabbage. Con-tinue until all meat is used. I only use the large leaves, or at least until they are gone.

Once all are rolled up, pour the remainder of the sauce over them and place on medium-low heat with lid for 1.5 hours. You can cook longer without lid if you’d like to reduce sauce a bit.

I taste the sauce halfway through and add salt and pepper if needed.

INGREDIENTS Bub's Halupshi- 1 ¼ LB Ground Beef (85/15

Lean)-2 Heads green Cabbage- ½ cup diced white onion- 1 Rice cooker cup cooked

white rice (I used Calrose)-Salt + Pepper

Sauce- 35 oz. Campbells Tomato Soup

+ 35 oz. water- Two 14oz. cans whole peeled

tomatoes, crushed- Salt + Pepper

KAPLER'S KITCHEN Each week, Manager

Gabe Kapler will give us some of his favorite food spots

from around the US, in no particular order.

I’m a steak eater. I eat a ton of them, and I think about them way too much. Suraya has a ribeye for two that is unlike any I’ve had. I’m all for a traditional steakhouse bone-in, dry aged,

boneless...all of them. This one has a Mediterranean twist that I kept going back for when I was in Philly. Suraya is a great place to take a big group, fill the table with food and wine and share. Their staff is extremely knowledge-able and attentive and will walk you through the menu and what you’re eating in great detail. The restaurant has real visual appeal, striking the right bal-

ance between warm and clean, simple beauty.

SURAYAFISHTOWN, PHILADELPHIA, PA

BEYOND THE GIANT VAULT Housed in a 5,000 square foot building, the Giants Archives consists of memo-rabilia and artifacts from our team’s 138-year history. As part of the Giants Fan Page, fans can now, for the first time, learn about and view memorabilia from our collection. A sportswriter for almost 60 years, Leonard Koppett spent countless hours at the ballpark watching the games great players. He used his extensive

knowledge to write 22 books and win the J.G. Taylor Spink Award. Sitting in seat 71 in the VIP Press Box at Candlestick Park dur-ing the 1984 All Star Game, Koppett watched the National League

beat the American League 3-1. Along with 57,756 fans in the stands, Koppett was treated to a game featuring fif-teen future Hall of Famers on their rosters, and Giants Hall of Famer, Carl Hubbell throwing out the first pitch. On the 50th anniversary of Hubbell striking out five consecu-tive batters, the duo of Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden did “King Carl” one better. Valenzuela fanned all three American League hitters he faced in the fourth in-ning; then, the youngest player in All-Star Game history—a 19-year-old Gooden—whiffed all three batters in the fifth. Gary Carter, who caught both frames, also broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the second en route to MVP honors. Click to visit the vault and check out the Koppett feature starting Thursday
