ทางประวตศาสตรระบวามอายยาวนานนบพนป เคยมบทบาทส�าคญมา

ตงแตยคขอมโบราณ อนเนองมาจากท�าเลและทตงเหมาะทจะเปนเมอง

หนาดานทางทะเล พระประแดงจงเปนแหลงรวมของทงศลปะ วฒนธรรม

ขนบธรรมเนยมและวถชวตแบบดงเดมเอาไวมากมาย

เสนหของพระประแดงไมไดมเพยงแคการสบทอดวฒนธรรมความ

เปนอยของชนชาตมอญทเปนชาวพนเมองดงเดมเอาไวอยางเหนยวแนน

เทานน หากแตยงคงมความพเศษอนๆ ใหเหนอยอก ไมวาจะเปนสถาปตยกรรม

โบราณสถาน วดวาอาราม รวมไปถงอาหารการกน ทชาวพระประแดงสามารถ

ด�ารงเอกลกษณและความเกาเอาไวไดอยางนาอศจรรย การจะเขาถง

จตวญญาณของความเปนเมองพระประแดง โดยเฉพาะอารยธรรมชาวมอญ

คงไมอาจสมผสไดดวยค�าบอกเลาหรอจากการอานเพยงอยางเดยว ถาจะ

ใหลกซงทานจะตองเดนทางมาสมผสดวยตวของทานเอง

ผมขอเชญชวนนกทองเทยวทกทาน หาโอกาสแวะมาเยอนเมองเกา

ปากอาวไทยภายใตสสนและบรรยากาศแบบรามญสกครง แลวทานจะรวา

พระประแดง มของดมากมาย ไมไดแพเมองเกาใดในโลกเลย.. แวะมาเยอน

สกครงนะครบ ชาวสมทรปราการ พรอมตอนรบทานตลอดเวลา..

The ancient Phra Pradaeng was the origin of Samutprakan

Province. According to the historical data, this city was established

thousands years ago. Due to the location which was suitable to be

a fortress, Phra Pradaeng had become the center of art, custom,

tradition, and conventional lifestyle.

Samutprakan is fascinating not only in the aspect of long

and firm cultural inheritance but also in those distinctions such as

architecture, historic sites, monastery and food which Phra Pradaeng

people have been able to preserve their unique and antiquity until

now. To appreciate the spirit of Phre Pradeng particularly Mon’s

culture, reading books or listening to the stories might not be

enough. To perceive Phra Pradaeng profoundly, you need to come

over to our city personally.

I would like to invite all of you to visit this ancient city by the

bay once in your lifetime. The atmosphere of Mon culture will make

you realize that Phra Pradaeng is one of the interesting ancient cities

in the world. Come and visit us. We, Samutprakan people, always

welcome you here at Phra Pradaeng.

(Riding a tricycle, Visiting Mon’s Town, Bringing back

the Good Old Days” The new trend that has been

very popular among the tourists, both Thais and

foreigners. These activities we can enjoy any day of

the year, either on weekday, weekend or holiday,

regardless of the season and weather.

Therefore, this issue of @SAMUTPRAKAN Travel

magazine will bring all of you to visit Nakorn Khuean

Khan or the old city of Mons. Here you can see the

charming lifestyle of Mon people which has been

inherited from the past to the present. Mon villages,

Mon temples (more than 10 of them still exist.), the

Pillar Shrine with the oldest Ganesha image in

Thailand, artistic works at 2 royal temples built in the early

Rattanakosin era, and Wat Songtham Worawiharn

Museum, the folk heritage conservation center, all

of them do perfectly reflect their way of living.

These historic sites are only the introduction. Come

and feel by yourself the culture of Mons and you will

definitely fall in love with “Samutprakan”.

The purpose of this event which was held during 13 – 15

July, 2015 at Chulachomklao Fort was to commemorate 122

years of the Franco-Siamese War under the title and theme “Phra

Piyamaharat, With His Majesty’s Perception, The Nation United.”

On Day 1, besides the light and sound show which was

considered one of the biggest ever in Thailand, other interesting

activities were such as the glorification exhibition in honor of His

Majesty King Bhumibol and His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, the

OTOP product sale and the cultural performances organized by

Samutprakarn Provisional Administrative Organization.

On Day 2, there was the academic dialogue on the topic

of “In Memory of the Franco-Siamese War”. The guest speakers

were namely Admiral Wasin Sarikaputi, former Commander in

Chief of Royal Thai Marine Corps, Mr. Krairoek Nana, Historical

Academician, and Mr. Somchai Chaipraditrak, Local Historian

while the exhibition, the OTOP product sale, and various cultural

performances continued. This second day event was ended by

the light and sound show: “Phra Piyamaharat, With His Majesty’s

Perception, The Nation United.”

On the last day, the worship ceremony was taken place

and presided over by Amiral Apichai Amatayakul, Advisory Chief

of Royal Thai Navy. The glorification wreaths were presented to

the royal monument of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn in order

to show respect, not only for our beloved king who rendered

Thailand maintain its independence until these days but also for

those courageous heroes who sacrificed their lives in the War. A

number of government officers, soldiers, policemen, government

sector, private sector, VIP guests as well as people in general

unanimously joined this special occasion.

Ancient belts have been neatly created with the professional

skills of Tamrongrak Community Enterprise members. They have

brought the remnants of iron and metal from the factory to produce

the belts by using the stamping process. Then, the iron and metal

pressed pieces with the proper sizes are assembled into a belt with

the professional skills of Samrongnua villagers. To make it shiny

similarly to the conventional ancient one, the iron or metal belt will

be plated with silver, gold or copper alloy. This product has become

an excellent souvenir for senior relatives.

Samutprakan is a province with a lot of outstanding and unique local products especially local antique handicrafts. The people in the

community have combined their conventional intellectual with their creativity to invent valuable products such as ancient belt, woven silverware,

wickerwork from nipa palm stalks, etc. These products have become the famous OTOP of Muang Paknam that all tourists should never miss.

With its unique qualities which are durable, glittering and multicolor,

crystal is widely used to make jewelry for women. However, Mr. Pisit

and Mrs. Nisa Soonthornpisit have initiatively applied to use crystal in

their artificial multicolor garlands which always attract people’s attention.

The patterns in silver or gold jewelry are normally carved. But the Sarn-ngern &

Sarnthong Community produces their works differently. They specially treated the pure silver

until it becomes the small and flat streaks. Then, these streaks will be woven into different

designs which is similar to weaving rattan or bamboo. The materials can be gold, silver or

copper alloy and the ornaments can be diamond, stone, jade, gem, and nine-gem as required.

ตนจากถอเปนพชทองถนทมอยมากในสมทรปราการ กลมคงจาก

จกสาน จงน�ามาสรางประโยชนและเพมมลคา ดวยการน�ากานใบจาก

มาสานเปนขาวของเครองใช เชน ตะกรา กระจาด ชะลอม ชดขนโตก

โมบายปลาตะเพยน เปนตน สามารถสรางอาชพและรายไดอยางงดงาม

Nipa palm (mangrove palm) is a local plant which is plentiful in

Samutprakarn. The Kungchaksarn Community, therefore, makes benefit

from and increase the value to this plant by weaving its stalks to be the

household utensils such as basket, flat basket, round basket, Kuntoke

(northern style) tray, Tapian fish hanging mobile, etc. Wickerwork has

built a career and the large amount of income to the community.

There is no classroom bigger and richer in knowledge than the “Mangrove Nature

Learning Center” of Saklasutheera-upatam School at Na Kluea Sub-District, Phra Samut

Chedi District, Samut Prakan. Founded in 1997 as a learning center at the school, the nature

at this mangrove is still unspoiled and filled with mangrove floras, marine benthos, and migra-

tory birds. Since the founding, it has been used as a learning center for school kids through

the integration with ordinary subjects and the green ecology of the forest. Subjects applied

to the mangrove include science, art, professional training, and English, and all of which can

amplify the pupils’ endless creativity.

จาก ซงชาวบานในพนทนยมน�าใบไปท�าตบจากมงหลงคาบาน, ตนโกงกาง

ใบเลก ซงเปนไมทมรากจ�านวนมากสามารถปองกนการกดเซาะชายฝงทะเล

ได และตนเหงอกปลาหมอ ซงเปนสมนไพรทมสรรพคณชวยแกน�าเหลอง

เสย และรกษารดสดวงทวาร เปนตน

Abundance of the mangrove that covers the area of about 7

acres makes it a huge classroom with a wide range of ecosystems

to learn. Flora species commonly found in this green classroom

are such as R. apiculata Blume, R. mucronata Poir, cork tree, S.

alba Smith, nipa palm, sea holly, Portia tree, Excoecaria agallocha,

Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt, and Lumnitzera racemosa. All these

flora species are commonly found along the trail of 800 meters.

Bruguiera cylindrica (L.) Bume is the most outstanding in this locality.

The school has applied the local wisdom to process the pods of

this plant into syrup and make it a famous delicacy of the area.

Other plan species are also useful. The leaves of nipa palm

are used to make the roof of the house. R. apiculata Blume, with

its many roots, protect the mangrove from coastal erosion. And

sea holly balances lymph and heals hemorrhoid.

นอกจากนนยงมสตวหนาดนชนดตางๆ อาศยอยตามโคลนเลนและ

รากไมจ�านวนมาก ทง ปลาจมพรวด, ปทะเล, หอยแครง, ปแสม, ปกามดาบ,

กงแชบวย, กงดดขน ฯลฯ แตสตวทสามารถพบเจอไดมากทสด คอ ตวเงน

ตวทอง ซงมจ�านวนไมต�ากวา 100 ตวเลยทเดยว สวนสตวอกหนงชนดทถอ

เปนไฮไลตหลกคอ รงผงหลวงขนาดใหญกวา 4 รง บนตนโกงกางใบใหญ

ทมกจะอพยพเขามาอาศยท�ารงเปนประจ�าชวงหลงเดอนเมษายนของทกป

สวนใครทชอบกจกรรมสองนก ทนกมใหไดชมเชนกน ซงสวนใหญจะ

เปนนกอพยพทมกจะยายถนฐานตามฤดกาลตางๆ เชน นกยางกรอกพนธ

จน, นกกนเปลอกเหลอง, นกตนเทยน, นกแขวก, นกกะปด, นกกางเขน,

นกกระเตนอกขาว, นกกาน�าเลก, นกกวก, นกยางเปย และนกยางเขยว ซง

สามารถพบเหนไดทวไป

Apart from the aforementioned plants, the mangrove is also the

habitat of marine benthos living in the mud and roots of the plants,

including blue-spotted mudskipper, crabs, cockles, mangrove crabs,

fiddler crabs, banana shrimps, and snapping shrimps. But the most

common animal in this area is the monitor lizards. We found at least

100 of them. Another highlight of the trail was also the 4 hives of the

giant honey bee on the R. apiculata Blume trees. These bees usually

migrated to the mangrove late in April each year.

For those who love bird, they have the bird watching activity

here. Most of the poultry species are migratory birds such as Chinese

pond heron, black-winged stilt, black-crowned night heron, crow pheasant,

magpie, white-throated kingfisher, little cormorant, white-breasted

waterhen, little egret, and little heron.

Because of its abundance, the mangrove has been the

important learning center for school kids, with application of

school subjects such as science. In science classes, the teacher

would bring the students to observe the environment and

ecosystem, including the plant species, marine benthos. In art

class, the teacher may instruct them to draw mangrove-related

pictures and inspire their imagination. In agricultural class,

the teacher would bring them to learn about seedlings and

reforestation. All these are very useful for them in real life.

It is unquestionable that this is one of the most important

mangroves in Samut Prakan province because it is not only

a learning center for students, but is also open for everyone

to witness the beauty of nature. In the past, students from

other schools and villagers nearby, bicycle rider club, college

students have come here to do activities such as replanting

mangrove trees, bird watching, and bushwalking.

Nakhon Khuean Khan, an ancient area of the Great Khmer Empire, has retained its presence

In terms of the history of Mueang Phra Pradaeng

and Nakhon Kuen Khan, although it has passed over a

thousand years, the greatness of architectures and the

glamorous lifestyle of people in that period of time has

never been less. Instead, the exchange of lifestyle and the

cultural harmony between Thai and Mon people through

buildings, traditions, foods, clothing, in particular Wat

Mon or Mon Temple still mentally remain the meaning

and importance of architecture and arts over 200 years,

which have later become a story that has been told to

attract visiting tourists from around the world.

Once we are ready, it’s time to open the gate

of Nakhon Kuen Khan to step inside for visiting Mon

ancient city right now.

Our first check-in is absolutely the City Pillar Shrine in front of the City

Hall. It is local holy place of this town since the establishment of Nakhon

Kuen Khan. This City Pillar Shrine is quite unique and more interesting than

any other shrines as at the top of wooden pillar there is carved Ganesha

made of sand stone. It was built under the influence of the Brahmin cult

from India. The Ganesha is situated under the Thai-styled movable throne.

It has 4 hands, holding a trident in the upper right hand, holding a lasso

in the upper left hand, holding ivory in the lower right hand, and holding

dessert bowl in the lower left hand. The Ganesha sits on upside-down lotus

base. It looks gorgeous with its simplicity as it rarely has any decorating

pattern or accessories, even the headdress set.

Mueang Phra Pradaeng’s City Pillar Shrine has been honored as

the oldest City Pillar Shrine in Thailand, similarly to the City Pillar Shrine

of Mueang Si Thep in Petchabun Province. The Department of Fine Arts

has registered this shrine in 1949. People usually call it “City Goddess”.

In addition, it is the only one City Pillar Shrine that has Ganesha located

as a part of city pillar, similarly to Thao Wessuwan of the Udon Thani City

Pillar Shrine or Chatu Kham Ram Thep of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.

1,000 years ago, Khom or Khmer Kingdom had an influence to govern all

areas of the Chao Phraya River Basin. This area therefore became the sea fortress

of Khmer Kingdom as it was the area that water from the Chao Phraya River

flows up to the north. Boats were forced to ride against the wind. That is why it

was appropriate for building a border station for immigration control. It is believed

that the area of Mueang Phra Pradaeng at that time covered wider area than the

current Phra Pradaeng District in Samut Prakarn Province. It was expanded to

some areas in Rat Burana District, Phra Khanong District, and Khlong Toei District

as we can see from the existence of Chao Po Phra Pradaeng Shrine, located in

the area of the Port of Thailand in Khlong Toei District nowadays.

The next destination is not far away. We just asked

some merchants in the area where Wat Juan Damrong

Racha Phonkhan is. Then, we walked and sight saw the

town for a short while to reach the destination.

Wat Juan Damrong Racha Phonkhan is called in

Mon language as “Pia A-Moy”. It was built in 1887 by

Phraya Damrong Racha Phonkhan (Jui Kachaseni), the

second ruler of Mueang Phra Pradaeng. He donated his

residence to build this temple. People usually called it

with the shorter name as “Wat Juan”

Mon people immigrating to enjoy the royal greatness in Thailand

were spreading over around several villages. Most of them lived in group

along the river as they mainly worked as farmers, gardeners, and fisher-

men for livings. They also brought the title of their old villages to name

the new villages as we can see nowadays, e.g. Song Khanong Village or

Gwan Dong Ha Nong, Sae Village or Gwan Sae, Tong-U Village or Gwan

Tong-U, and Dung Village or Gwan Dung,

This temple was once the main temple of Jang

Bee Village or Gwan Jang Bee, meaning the beach

house. This name might be derived from the fact

that the temple area was surrounded by canal in all

47 sides. Most houses were built along the canal so

the important thing to do when visiting this temple

is fish feeding at the riverside gazebo. It costs approx-

imately 10-20 Baht. It is considered one of happiness

at cheap indeed.

Inside of the temple, there is Phra Nakhon

Sasada Buddha situated. ThisBuddha is thesacred

treasure of Nakhon Kuen Khan and it is one of the

four provincial Buddha, including Phra Pathum

Rat of Pathum Thani Province, Phra Nontha Nat of

Nonthaburi Province, and Phra Samut Maha Munin

of Samut Prakarn Province, which were casted

from alloy altogether in 1900 by imitating the

principle Buddha of Wat Poramaiyikawat in

Nonthaburi Province. The nature of diamond

cross-legged sitting instead of flat cross-legged

sitting Buddha with robe and scarf wearing

is considered one of ancient and worthy

Rattabakosin arts.

Phra Nakhon Sasada Buddha situated

If we start the journey since early morning,

now it should be late already. The weather should

be a little bit warmer and our stomach may start

requesting for foods. So, there is no need to wait

anymore. We now look for a tricycle which is our

main vehicle for today trip. There are many public

tricycles available to serve us. We can either rent

one for the entire day or just hitch hike one to

bring us to the destination. It’s not hard to find at

all. However, for group tourists we recommend that

a day-rental option should be more convenient.

Our chill-out destination is not that far. We can just tell Mr. Rider to go to “Soi

Ban Dung”. Then, we can just sight see this 2-decade ancient town for fun until

Mr. Rider drops us off at the location of a chic coffee shop inside Mon community,

called “Shan Ouad” which is a Mon term, meaning all of love. The coffee shop’s

owner renovated the 2-storey house into a coffee house with a sense of vintage

perfectly mixing with modern style. It is surrounded by big and small trees, making

it look so green. At the back yard, there are some seats popular among people who

love chilling ambiance along the canal. There, people can have fun by feeding fish

while enjoying some sips from a beautiful cup at the same time.

To add more energy to the brain, you may choose

Espresso which is quite mild and not too strong. Otherwise,

you may pick iced tea, cocoa, and smoothies to cool

your body temperature down as well. Also, to fill

in your stomach, there is a tender waffle topped

with caramel or assorted cakes which will help

fulfill your chilling day with more fun. Because

of the perfection that people look for at this

place, it has become another popular spot

for chilling out in Phra Pradaeng.

tening jazz music available all day on the 2nd floor. It

is famous among teenagers as there are some private

Once Khmer Kingdom started losing its influence, His Majesty the King Rama Thibodi 1 (Phra Chao U-thong) pleased to estab-

lish “Krung Thep Tava Ravadi Si Ayutthaya” (or Krung Si Ayutthaya) City. He chose to introduce the improved system mixed between

governance system of Sukhothai Kingdom and Khmer Kingdom for his kingdom, which was to have 1 inner fortress and 1 outer outpost.

As a result, Mueang Phra Pradaeng was designated as inner outpost by sea of Thailand. As revealed in the Chronicle that there were

4 inner fortress outposts in Ayutthaya period, including Lopburi in the North, Nakhon Nayok in the East, Suphan Buri in the West, and

Phra Pradaeng in the South. Phlang Fai Fa Fortress is one of seven archeological sites in Samut Prakarn Province which was registered

with the Department of Fine Arts in 1980. The remaining archeological sites presented the greatness of the ancient outpost by sea.

River Residential Quarter is located across the temple, surrounded with turtle pools and fish pools. The top is square-based with

After everyone gets fully recharged, we then get back on

the tricycle and tell Mr. Rider to go to Wat Prod Ket Chetaram

next. Suddenly, he starts leading us through Phraya Damrong

Racha Phonkhan Lane towards Song Tham Lane where our

next destination is.

Wat Prod Ket Chetaram was one of the two royal tem-

ples in Nakhon Kuen Khan which was built in the reign of His

Majesty the King Rama II. It is the only Thai Buddhist temple in

Phra Pradaeng area. Other temples are Mon Buddhist temples.

As for architecture, it is the mixture among Thai, Mon, and

Chinese influence as we can see the pattern of pediment,

without gable apex and tooth-like ridges. It was decorated with

porcelains influenced by Chinese culture. Doors and windows

were decorated with the rose of Sharon pattern influenced

by Thai culture. The temple however was built in ship shape

based on Mon’s traditional belief.

This religious site is extremely unique for tourists who love

arts and culture as there are hidden specialties in all architectures

waiting for you to explore.

Sleeping Buddha was built in 1822 in the reign of His Majesty the King Rama II which is gold-lacquer Buddha

sculpture with 6 Wa and 2 Sok in length. It is the oldest sleeping Buddha in Samut Prakarn Province.

Painting by “Khrua In Khong” inside the temple: Khrua In Khong is a professional painter in

the reign of His Majesty the King Rama IV who firstly initiated western style of paintings. There

are also some paintings from early Rattabakosin period. The highlights are clear dimension and

dark color of events.

As far as visible, Wat Phaichayon Phonsep

which is our next destination is just 20 steps

away. However, as there is a canal in between,

both temples are separated. We, therefore, take

off again with our favorite drink (from Shan

Ouad Coffee Shop) and ask Mr. Rider to send

us to the next destination safely.

Wat Phaichayon Phonsep Racha Wora

Vihan, the secondary royal temple, was built in

the reign of the King Rama II in approximately

1819. It is related to Wat Prod Ket Chetaram

in terms of builder, architectural style, and

dedicatedly gorgeous decoration which can

represent the talents of craftsman in early

Rattanakosin era.

The pediment of temple and religious hall is a unique

architecture, without gable apex and tooth-like ridges. The

sculpture arts were decorated with porcelains influenced

by Chinese culture. Doors and windows were decorated

with the golden rose of Sharon pattern and were carved

from wood delicately. Moreover, what should not be missed

is the pattern on the poles inside the temple which is as

same as Wat Bovorn Nivet Vihan in Bangkok. All poles have

each hole used for air and humidity treatment. The pattern

on the wall was royally given from the palace. Also, the

surrounding area of the temple has 4 tiny halls in Chinese

style and another 3 stupas.

As for top pagoda pavilion, the crown prince in His

Majesty the King Rama I pleased to establish Phra Puttha

Sihing Buddha Image at Putthaisawan Throne. Until the

reign of His Majesty the King Rama III, Mahasak Phonsep

Crown Prince pleased to give the top of the stupa for the

establishment of the main Buddha image in the temple of

Wat Phaichayon Phonsep, which was also built by himself.

The movable throne at the top of the stupa was made of

teak in the stupa-alike shape. There are four balconies and

there is an image Buddha established on each side. The

movable throne was delicately carved and decorated with

mirror which is considered as the masterpiece of ancient

craftsmen in the country. Another specialty which has

rarely been known among people is this movable throne

is removable and can be reassembled of all pieces.

Another ancient Mon art we are visiting is also in-

teresting in terms of history. However, after looking at the

time, we believe it might be the last place we can visit for

this trip. So, we should be hurry up. We then tell Mr. Rider

to go to Wat Song Tham. Let’s go!

Wat Song Tham Wora Vihan, the secondary great

temple, is the first Mon temple which is related to Nakhon

Kuen Khan for a long time. His Majesty the King Rama II

pleased to allow the Crown Prince at that time to proceed the

construction of this temple, concomitant with the construction

of Nakhon Kuen Khan. It then was royally named as “Wat

Song Tham”. His Majesty the King decided to construct this

temple for all Mon people who migrated to the country to

stay under the royal kindness to use as a place for religious

tradition and their mental center.

พระรำชวง รองรอยควำมเปนเมองพระประแดงเดมจงหำยสำบสญนบ

แตนนมำ จวบจนลวงเขำสสมยพระบำทสมเดจพระพทธเลศหลำนภำลย

รชกำลท 2 พระเจำกรงเวยดนำมใหรำชทตญวนเขำมำยงสยำม เพอถวำย

In 1767, His Majesty the King Taksin Maharat established

Krung Thonburi as the capital of Thailand and pleased to destroy

the wall of Mueang Phra Pradaeng to rebuild as the palace wall.

As a result, the traces of the ancient Phra Pradaeng lost since that

time. Until the reign of His Majesty the King Rama II, the Vietnam

King sent an envoy to Siam to pay respect to the royal death of

His Majesty the King Rama I, as well as to present the royal letter

informing of the disqualification of Pha Thai Mat City’s governor

in governing people and requesting the approval for Vietnam to

assume the governing power. At that time, the king of Thailand

was worried about the possibility of having a war against Myanmar

in the North so he approved Vietnam to govern Pha Thai Mat

City as he did not want to become an enemy against Vietnam.

Such event made the king to see that he could not be

certain much about the wars at the seaside burg anymore. Con-

sequently, he pleased to assign the crown prince to become the

chief to construct a new town in Pak Lad where His Majesty the

King pleased to construct in the past but had not finished yet. The

construction took some areas of Krung Thep Mahanakhon District

and Samut Prakarn District to unit as a new city, royally named

as “Mueang Nakhon Kuen Khan”. He also pleased to migrate

Mon families in Pathum Thani Province, which are Phraya Jeng

(Chao Phraya Maha Yotha – the origin of Kachaseni Family) and

Terin governor, including 300 men, to settle for living in order to

help construct marine fortress and take care of the city security.

One thing which can attract all tourists’ interest is Phra Maha Jedi

Raman Stupa which is outstandingly located inside red fence with uniquely

carved pattern. This stupa has 1 Wa 2 Sok in width and 10 Wa 3 Sok in

height. It has been believed that this stupa was built in the reign of His

Majesty the King Rama IV but had not finished yet. Phra Kru Pidakatara

(Tan Jantarangsi) successfully constructed it. Later, Phra Rachatham Visart

(Suk Buddharangsi) performed some maintenance for the stupa base and

the surrounding area, and took all Buddha images remaining after main

Buddha image selection to put inside this stupa.

The main Buddha image in the temple is subduing Mara Buddha image from Sukhothai

period. His Majesty the King Rama IV pleased to invite this Buddha image to establish in

this temple as it is gorgeous. As for all religious and praying ceremonies, the temple mainly

used Mon language. Although it is currently compromised as appropriate, the Royal Kathin

Ceremony still uses only Mon language.

The religious hall was built of bricks and cement. All gable apex and tooth-like ridges are teak

with surrounding poles. The bottom of the poles was designed to support the weight of the upper

part. Inside, there is imitated Buddha’s footprint established, which is stored in Thai lacquer work

scripture cabinet showing of the story from Ramayana.

The view at the connecting point between Bhumibol 1 Bridge and Bhumibol 2 Bridge in the

area of Khlong Lad Pho Health Park along the Chao Phraya River provides the shining light

above the river reflected from night lights. This is the MUST point for check-in.


In the evening, the area of Khlong Lad May-

om canal or nearby is another spot for resting, in

particular at Lat Po Health Park. All villagers in the

neighboring areas will come for work out on regular

basis, either jogging around the park and feeding

fish, or using work-out machines available. If you

happen to stand in the middle of the park and

look up above the sky, you will see that this park

is exactly in the middle under Bhumibol Bridge,

so called Industrial Ring Junction.

The night scene of Khlong Lat Po area may

be another memorable thing of this trip. Although

it is just a small canal cut from the Chao Phraya

River, it is important as it was built as floodgate

of Khlong Lat Po under His Majesty the King’s

royal project for water management in order to

solve flood problem. At night, for whoever has

a chance to sense the gorgeousness of Khlong

Lat Po floodgate and the Industrial Ring Junction

where were so vivid with many thousand lights

reflecting on the river surface, you will definitely

memorize this impressive moment as well for once

in a lifetime with a trip to this ancient Nakhon

Kuen Khan.

which is convenient as well.

Am I still able to do my beloved job at the age 72? This question came to my mind when I

met Mr. Wanchai Wangthawin or Grandpa Chao, the ice cream vendor who has paddled his boat

to sell his goods on the Chaopraya River for over 50 years. The active, cheerful, talkative,

and friendly manners are all distinctive personalities of this oldie vendor that made me feel

comfortable to talk with him about his life and his experiences during those past years.

Grandpa Chao said that he was born in Bangkok

and used to live in Klongtan area. He came from

the poor family. His father died when he was a

small child. He had to help his mother work and

raise the other 4 siblings since he was 15. He had

no education and had to earn money as much as

possible. Therefore, he chose to sell the ice cream.

That was because in the former time, people cooked

their own food and dessert while ice cream was

rare and must be purchased only. It was not widely

available like today. In addition, people at all ages,

either men or women, they all love the sweet taste

of frosty ice cream.

“In the former time, there was no water gate on Phrapadaeng bank. I

could paddle along the fruit gardens to all canals and villages. I was the only

ice cream vendor and my ice cream was very popular. A lot of people bought

it. The price was 1 satang per bar. I could earn as much as 100 baht which

was considered a great deal.” He talked about the story in the past.

When Grandpa Chao grew up and became a young man, he was married

and began his family life. After marrying, he still paddled his boat to sell his ice

cream bars for another 20 years. Then the popularity in this type of ice cream

lessened. But due to the burden of raising 6 children, Grandpa Chao changed

to sell the scooped western ice cream. He bought the ice cream from the ice

cream producer. There were a lot of flavors such as milk, chocolate, vanilla

and strawberry. The turnover was even better than before at 300 baht daily.

At the beginning, Grandpa Chao sold the ice

cream bars which were made from syrup poured

in tubes and put in a stainless steel bucket filled

with ice and salt. He loaded his ice cream in his

sampan boat and paddled along Phrakhanong

canal until reaching the Chaopraya River. He sold

his ice cream starting from Klongtoey pier and

then cross to Phrapadaeng area at Bangkrachao

river bend. We could say that at that time there

was only one ice cream vendor in the Chaopraya

River. That was Grandpa Chao.

“At that time, I sold 10 boxes of ice cream a day. I had to sell

my ice cream as much as possible in order to feed my family and

gave the highest education to my children according to their capacity

so that they could earn their own living when they grew up. I don’t

drink. I don’t smoke. I am hardworking. I portioned out some money

to deposit with the bank regularly. Though it was not a big amount

initially, after all those years my money increased”

His burden decreased after all of his children graduated and started

ออworking. At the same time, the civilization just right entered into

Phrapadaeng area at Bangkrachao river bend. The water gates were

constructed. There were roads in the villages. People turned to use cars

instead of boats. They had more convenient way of living. However,

for Grandpa Chao, those things negatively affected him. His route for

selling ice cream was shorter because he could not paddle into the

canals as before. A lot of shops opened up in the village which enabled

the villagers to buy thing more easily. The ice cream of Grandpa Chao,

therefore, became less popular.

Gradpa Chao said that about 4-5 years ago, he stopped selling

ice cream for 1 year. But because of his fondness in this career and

enthusiastic character, he came back to sell the ice cream again. This

time, he changed from the rowing boat to the motorboat. Also, he

decreased his sell volume to only 3 boxes a day. Presently Grandpa

Chao sells his ice cream on Monday, Tuesday and weekend starting

from 11 a.m. while Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are his days off

which he normally takes a rest, go to mosque or exercise.

“My family knows that I love my job; they don’t forbid me. Anyway,

there is one rule. I have to arrive home before dusk. They are worried

because I am quite old now. In another 1 or 2 years, I really might have

to stop selling ice cream.” The 72 years old man finally said.

After the conversation ended, I don’t miss to buy his strawberry

ice cream with sticky rice at the price of 15 baht. During eating, I

was thinking that if I had a chance to come to Chaopraya bank again,

either Klongtoey side or Phrapadaeng side, I would definitely buy the

ice cream of Grandpa Chao.

Tambon Bang Nampeung or Bang Nampeung Sub-

district in Phra Pradaeng District always becomes alive on

weekends when a lot of visitors come to visit and have

their activities there. Some come for shopping at the floating

market where all famous food and products from the

community are gathered for sale; some who have more time

stays overnight in a homestay accommodation and some

come for cycling in order to touch the nature. Weekends,

consequently, are the days that the villagers can earn their

income from the visitors.

With the advantage of his land location, Beer – Panithan

Simek came up with the idea of a small coffee shop that

visitors can have a place for taking a rest during their visit in

this area. Later, he named his coffee shop “Beehive Coffee

House”.

He told us that previously this land with the size of 2

Rais had been deserted. He, therefore, consulted with his

family about developing and making benefit from it. The

conclusion was reached. The land was divided into 2 parts:

the first part was for an orchard of fruits like banana, mango

and coconut while the rest was for a small coffee shop which

finally opened in the mid of 2014.

“I personally like coffee and with the existence of the

floating market, those weekend market customers should be

our customers as well. Moreover, I love cycling. Every nook

and cranny in this zone I have already dropped by. There were

not so many rest places. So I decided to open a coffee shop.”

the young man explained.

With his working experiences in architecture, Beer used his

background knowledge in material selecting and decoration.

Initially, he intended to use a cargo container to be a shop

structure as his preference. But its price was too high and the

dimensions did not fit the requirement either. Instead, he used

the ordinary reinforced concrete construction with the metal

sheets as the outer layout in order to make it similar to the

cargo container. To reduce the heat, he added one more pile

of roof and shaded the area with the plants.

The main menus of his coffee shop are all popular drinks

such as coffee, tea and smoothie. For weekends, the special

menu of bread will be added, for example, baked bread with

egg, toasts with various toppings, etc. Sometime, there is pizza

too. The shop owner said that desserts and snack are not available

everyday because they are all homemade, not outsourced. The

availability, therefore, depends on the convenience of the family

members.

Since most of his customers are tourists and people from

the nearby areas, he again came up with the idea of souvenir

selling. The souvenirs that the visitors like to buy as the gifts

for their loved ones are such as pin, mug, and bee doll. For

the shop name Beehive which means the house of the bee,

he intended to present the charm and the richness in natural

resources of his vicinity which draw many bees to build their

hives and made this area was named Bang Nampeung or Honey

Village until now.


Linger Around

After sipping the drink, tasting the snack and feeling fresh, if the

heat does not bother you that much, you can enjoy strolling in the

orchard at the back of this coffee shop. Although the trees are not

big enough, the environment is quite nice. He has paid attention to

every tree he planted, watching their growth and hoped that they will

bear the fruits to make him happy shortly.

Beer proudly told us that for one day at Bang Nampeung, we can

take part in many activities. Besides shopping at the floating market,

making merit at Wat Bang Nampeung Nok and Wat Bang Nampeung Nai

is also a good idea. Otherwise, riding a bicycle among the village and

the nature is enjoyable as well. He cordially invited all of us to come and

experience this feeling.

We made an appointment with the owner

of the homestay, Uncle Somchai Sapthip. He

volunteered to take the boat to pick us at Khlong

Ta Pherm pier. However, as it was the low tide

time, the travel was a little bit more slowly than

usual about 15-20 minutes. On the way, we saw

Krachang Fish swimming on the wet clay under

the shade of the Nypa palm forest. As tourists,

we could not help taking the photos along the

route.

Not taking a long time, we arrived at the

destination. Mrs. Phattra Sapthip or Aunt Paew,

the wife of Uncle Somchai greeted us with a

generous gesture. She invited us to sit in the

house’s patio facing the farm to view the scene

clearly as well as giving us the water for cooling

us before talking with us in the casual atmosphere

with the wind blowing all day.

Uncle Somchai told us that after he retired

from the Bank, he came back to spend his life

traditionally again by being coastal fishermen and

living simply. When his friends came to visit him

here, they love the quiet place close to nature.

Therefore, he modified his house to become the

homestay since 2006 and opened as a small

homestay.

Aunt Paew added that at earlier state, the

business was not very serious. The place was

visited by the tourists 2-3 month a time. Most of

the visitors were their friends and acquaintances.

Some came with free of charge while the others

were charged. The business became serious just

over two years ago. This was because the place

was ready to accommodate more people about

30 visitors staying in the joined bedroom simply

decorated. The local activities were promoted for

the visitors to learn about local life and feeding

aquatic lives which was the extra income for the

family. For the days without visitors, all of villagers

would take the fishing life as main occupation

as usual.

Apart from Uncle Somchai and Aunt Paew who manage

the homestay, there is also Ton-Phat Sapthip, their son, who

helps them managing the business by applying the experience

gained from traveling with his family homestay.

Ton tells us that some resorts or homestays open for

visitors every day. When one group of people checks out,

another group will be in queue hurriedly to take a rest. The

quality of service is not impressive. However, his homestay

leaves the period for welcoming tourists to allow time for

preparing the place to be ready for accommodating tourists and

letting them do the activities fully. They are not rushed to go

back. Ton believes that when travelling, everyone wants to feel

the atmosphere completely.

For visiting, the landlord will provide food for all three

meals. Mostly, the meals are simple menu cooked from the main

raw materials found from the farm such as shrimps, shellfish,

crabs, and fish. The dinner is the big course for visitors to sit

down in circle and eat together such as omelet with shrimp,

sour soup, steamed crabs, steamed clams, fried Kulao fish and

Kraphong fish. The breakfast begins with porridge, coffee, and

toast. The lunch is Suki and stir-fried Thai noodles. The taste of

Aunt Paew’s meals is as rich as those served in the restaurants.

The great cook says that people who want to show off their

cooking skill, they can cook by themselves in the fully equipped

Thai kitchen.

will be taken to the pond for catching crabs. Each one will be

distributed with one trap and one died fish. The died fish will

be stuck in the trap as the bait and the trap will be put into the

farm in any place. In the next morning, the trap will be raised

ant the tourists will be excited whether they will get the crabs

or not. It is the activity to entertain with a fun. The tourists can

also swim to grope cockle, do fishing, kayak, or walk to impress

the scenic view along the white bridge stretching into the farm

for about 200 meters. The suitable time is in the morning and in

the evening. Especially on sun set, the view is especially great

for taking photos enjoyably.

Due to the fact that Wat Songtham Worawihan is an ancient

Buddhist temple of Mon Denomination which was built at the

same time of Nakorn Khuen Khan in King Rama 2’s era, we are

not surprised to know that there are a number of interesting

places and things in this temple that attract many visitors to

continuously come to visit here all year long. Those are such

as the Grand Chedi (Pagoda), the Old Ubosot (Church), Setthi

Navakoat Buddha Image, and Luangpho Thanjai Buddha Image.

However, there is one more thing that is equally interesting. That

is “Wat Songtham Worawihan Museum”. This museum is a

valuable folk heritage conservation center for Mon people in

Samutprakarn. All Buddha images, tools and equipment, Mon

style tray, betel receptacle as well as Mon’s art and culture do

perfectly reflect the way of living of Mon people that has been

connecting to the temple.

เครองใช ในอดตของชาวมอญ เพราะวดแหงนไดชอวาเปนวดมอญตงแต

ครงกอตง โดยมจดสงเกตงายๆ ทเสาหงส เชอกนวาถาวดใดมเสาหงสตงอย

หนาวดกแสดงวาวดแหงนนเปนวดมอญรามญ ดงนนวตถทจดแสดงภายใน

พพธภณฑแหงนจงมความหลากหลาย และสามารถเชอมโยงสายสมพนธ

มอญพระประแดงในอดต

Wat Songtham Worawihan Museum which is located on the

second floor of the wooden pavilion has been opened for the public

since 2011. The purpose for founding this museum was to gather

all antique items in the temple namely the Buddha images, personal

items of the abbots and the items that were given to the temple.

Most of the given items were formerly owned by Mon people in this

area and this temple has been Mon’s monastery for this area since

establishing. To distinguish the Mon temple, just simply look for a

pole with the swan statue. If you see one in any temple, it means

that temple is Mon monastery. The items that are exhibited in the

museum are various and all of them can relate to the kinship of Mon

people in Phra Pradaeng in the past.

As soon as stepping into the museum, we were stunned by

all those folk items which have been arranged neat and tidy. They

are such as steelyard, wooden chest, iron chest, paper cutter,

conch shell, storm lantern, typewriter, pot with dragon pattern,

pottery, stone-set bowl, stone-set tray, mortar & pestle, garlic jar,

etc. Most of them were household appliances of the villagers in

the former time and there were over 100 pieces altogether.

When stepping further into the other side of the museum,

we saw a lot of colorful dishware and glassware. They have

been arranged properly in the wooden cabinets which could be

clearly classified as follows glassware, big bowl, tray, glass vase,

silver bowl, soup bowl, food container set, clay jar, clay bucket,

porcelain spittoon, teapot, porcelain vase, porcelain flowerpot, etc.

These dishware and glassware were brought into Thailand by the

Chinese merchants who sailed their junks into the Chaopraya

basin very long time ago. The villagers bought these items for

their own use and gave some to the temple.

A Chinese rickshaw, the personal

vehicle of the previous abbots

The items that are considered the most significant are

the ones that belonged to Mon people. They are such as brass

betel receptacle which was a must-have item in all houses, Mon

style tray which its design and shape were quite unique, palm

scripture with Mon-Khmer alphabets. In the past, the monks at

Wat Songtham could read and write Mon language.

In addition, the personal items of the abbots in each period

are also exhibited, for example, SangKet Jor Por Ror pulpit or

long seat of sermon which were given to the temple by the

Bureau of Royal Household on the occasion of the royal cremation

of King Rama 5, the ancient pulpit which was built before the

year of 1954 as well as “Rod Jek” or Chinese rickshaw which is

the personal vehicle of the previous abbots.

temple is considered as an important learning center about

Mon culture in Samutprakarn Province. Besides being the

เรมจากมลานจอดรถกวางขวางมากพอทจะรองรบขบวนนกปนของเราได

อยางสบาย ทส�าคญบรเวณรมคลองทงสองฝงยงเตมไปดวยรานอาหาร

รสเดดไมวาจะเปนกวยเตยวเปด ผดไทยโบราณ กระเพาะปลา และอนๆ

ทมนใจไดวานกปนกวา 300 ชวต สามารถฝากทองมอเชาไดอยางไรปญหา

If you really want to count all the goodies of Samut Prakan,

the answer is “impossible!” The counting would be too much, es-

pecially for bikers because as you move slowly on the wheel, you

will witness way of life and the goodies along the way, be it green

fields, river, canal, housing, temples, and nature, way more than

traveling with other vehicles!

That’s why Bang Kaeo Bike Club attracts so much interest

and is followed by those have common interest of “biking tourism”.

The activity “Ride the mountain bike, Say hi to Tigers..At

Bang Hia” is a trip that attracts many participants. The parade of

bikers take up to over 300 people, many more than expected. The

rendezvous is at Wat Bang Chalong Nok. This temple is suitable

for the start because it has a big space to accommodate all the

cyclists. More importantly, the temple is located by the river whose

banks are filled with food shops, ranging from noodles, Ancient

Pad Thai, and Krapho Pla. This sure guarantees that the cyclists’

stomachs are filled and ready for the day.

At 8 a.m., the caravan of cyclists moved out of the temple,

heading toward Bang Hia Sub-District, in Bang Hia District in the

past. The district has been renamed to Khlong Dan Sub-District,

Khlong Dan District, by King Chulalongkorn. Back in the past, the

King travelled along the watercourse and stayed here at Bang Hia

for 3 days. He resolved the problem of water leak at Chon Han

Phichit Watergate.

When the caravan arrived at Khlong Dan (Bang Hia), the

cyclists took the route through Bang Phli Industrial Estate and

turned left at Wat Law Wai, and headed toward Wat Bang Phriang

in Bang Bo District. Wat Bang Phriang is an old temple founded

in 1792. The monk’s dwelling is made of wood in Thai traditional

style. The sermon hall is a twin building. The major Buddha image

at this temple is named “Luang Pho Sakkayamuni”. The premises

of the temple are surrounded by orchards and fish farms of the

villagers nearby. That’s why when the bikers left the temple; they

rode through the refreshing orchards and farming areas.


Bang Bo District in the past had a sub-canal from Samrong

Canal. It was the drainage way to the sea, home to monitor lizards

commonly known among the locals as “Hia”. With the abundance

of this reptile species, the villager called the community “Bang

Hia”. When more people moved to live there, the community grew

to become Bang Hia Sub-District and Bang Hia District eventually,

after the reptile which seemed to be the highlight of the locality.

In 1930, the Ministry of Interior changed the name from Bang Hia

to Bang Bo while Bang Hia Sub-District was renamed as “Khlong

Dan” in 1940.

นอกจากนนขบวนจกรยานกวา 300 ชวต ประกอบดวยนกปนผรกสขภาพ

The caravan of over 300 cyclists comprising of health lovers and

travellers from all walks of life also had a chance to appreciate the beauty

of nature of the road by the Suea Tai Canal (literally translated as Dead

Tiger Canal) which lay in parallel with the old Sukhumvit Road. In this trip,

they experienced fun memories on the saddle, enjoying the slow motion

that their feet took them.

Sukhumvit Road took the caravan to the bridge across Dan Canal.

They took the small alley of Pho Pan Sai 1 (south) where people live a

slow life. The highlight of this path is the huge ship depot, where the

cyclists spotted many large colorful boats. They did not miss the chance

to take some nice shots.

Our destination was Wat Sawang Arom or commonly known

among the villagers as “Wat Lang”. The temple was built at the

mouth of the Bang Hia River near the coast. Therefore, it has

the area with peaceful mangrove, suitable for mediation. In the

past, Luang Pu Pan (Phra Khru Phiphatnirotkit), a famous reverend

monk of Wat Bang Hia Nok, anchored his umbrella and

meditated around the area. The highlight of this temple would

unarguably be the huge sculpture of a tiger. On the back of

the tiger was a big package of amulet. The stomach of the

tiger was also stuffed with amulets such as tiger’s fang carved

into the shape of a tiger, the signature amulet of Luang Pho Pan.

If you want to see the amulets, you will have to creep down below

the tummy of the big tiger.

It’s such an honor that Phra Khru Sathitwaraphon or Luang

Pho Damrong, the monk dean of Khlong Dan Sub-District welcomed

the caravan of visitors. On this occasion, the cyclists donated an

amount of money to support the construction of the temple’s

toilet before leaving. Some of the bike tourists took pictures of

the monitor lizards, the native species to this area as a memory.

After Wat Sawang Arom, the caravel took Sukhumvit Road

again and cross Dan Canal to the other side of the road. The next

destination is the museum of carved wood at Wat Sang Sok.

Before entering the museum, we were kindly received by Phra

Khru Palat Chare Kittiwuttho, the dean monk of the temple. The

monk welcomed us with the refreshing drink of iced Chao Kuai

and the villagers distributed the drinks to us with open arms.

Inside the museum stood Phra Setthi Nawakot or Phra Kao

Na (nine-faced Buddha) carved with white emerald weighing 7

tons. Here visitors also explored the exquisite carved art, especially

the horse-drawn carriage in the main hall. On the second floor, the

museum showcased a lot of Buddha images and the relics

surrounded by images of Buddhist monks. It’s really worth a visit.

Apart from the museum, visitors were also fascinated by

the old ordination hall over 300 years old. In the ordination hall,

the U Thong Buddha image aged over 400 years was housed

so that visitors can pay respect.

Originally, this temple was named “Wat Pak Ao” (mouth

of the river), but the some locals referred to it as “Wat Mon” while

others “Wat Atsawararam” because in the past this area was

where King Taksin marched his army. During the reign of King

Chulalongkorn, the temple was renamed to “Wat Talengrom”

or “Wat Thalenglom”. In 1979, it was renamed again as “Wat

Pho Thong”, and one year after that “Wat Sang Sok” to rhyme

with the name of Princess Sangsok”, the daughter of King

Vajiravudh, and is called so ever since.

After leaving Wat Sangsok, our team rode the bicycle

to cross Sukhumvit Road to Wat Mongkhonkhothawat or

previously called “Wat Bang Hia Nok” where the famed Luang

Pho Pan resided. The temple housed the sculpture of Luang

Pho Pan which was made before his passing. The bicycle

caravan stopped here for lunch. Che Oi Kitchen, a famous

cook in Bang Bo area, offered a wide range of lunchbox

selections, take Khao Khluk Kapi for an example. The lunch was

sponsored by Khlong Dan Bike Club and local administrative

officials.

The gist before the end of the journey was the visit to

Wat Thong Khlung. We followed Pho Pan Sai 1 (North) route

to Bang Bo-Khlong Dan Road. The temple boasted much

architecture, especially chedi and the white building like Wat

Rong Khun in Chiang Rai. Before leaving, everyone was given

the tiger-shaped amulet from donating to sponsor the

construction of the temple’s ordination hall.

It’s time to go home. The bicycle caravan took Bang Bo

– Khlong Dan Road and stopped by for a drink at D-Bike at

Soi Muban Thepharak 4. In this trip, D-Bike Bang Bo Group

was the owner of the area. They had prepared the leading car

and the ending car, refreshing drinks, and repair service all

along the route.

From Bang Bo – Khlong Dan Road, the caravan hit

Thepharak Road to attend the closing ceremony at the ice

cream shop at Soi Bang Pla. They planned to have ice cream

and part ways there.

Everyone was filled with joy after receiving happiness

from every stop at the trip. The most important thing was the

chance to absorb and “feel” the scent and touch of the local

community, nature. The opportunity like this would not be easy

to find again, and it would be a pity if you missed it.

Pa Bunruean’s chemical-free galangal plantation is an

important organic farming in Bang Bo District. Bunruean

Iamsuksai has been growing galangal for more than 30 years.

She has been admired as a smart farmer of Samut Prakan.

Bunruean has been lecturing and educating many visitors about

chemical-free galangal plantation, integrated farming, making

EM, and making processed products from galangal such as

fermented galangal and galangal drink.

Only a few steps into the plantation, we saw thousands of

galangal grown along the prawn pond in the area of approximately

4,800 square meters. This vision makes us smile. Bunruean said

that before she becomes a full-time galangal grower, she was

a prawn farmer before. However, with an economic crisis and

higher galangal price, she changed to grow galangal, starting on

the ridge of the prawn ponds, and expanding to other areas like

today.

The galangal strains that she grows are the native to

Bang Phriang Sub-District such as the Red Galangal, known

for hard texture and strong scent, and White Galangal, known

for its big size and soft texture. According to Bunruean, both

strains are the galangal that every household grows for domestic

consumption. But then she grows and sells in the market, it

turns out that everyone loves them. It is said among many people

that Bang Phriang native galangals are “Good size, good smell,

good looking, and good taste”. They have become a famous

product nationally.

For those who want to grow the galangals at home,

this plantation also sells the seedlings with planting method

explanation. Growers should start with preparing the soil. Each

plant should be grown separate from each other about 1x1 m. At

the beginning, we have to take care of the young galangal by

watering, pruning, and removing pest, so that they grow well.

That’s enough for having a good quality galangal for home

consumption.

Galangal is certainly a highlight of the plantation, but there

are many more things to see such as Namwa Banana, Nam Dok

Mai Mango, lime, and lemongrass, all of which are grown chemical

-free, but the homemade EM solution. That’s why this plantation

has received GAP certification according to the Food Safety

scheme from Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture

and Cooperatives. Compliance with the standard is audited every

year to assure consumers’ safety.

EM solution, on the other hand, is just a piece of cake. You

only mix leftovers such as fish, pineapple, banana, and vegetable,

with sugar. Ferment the mixture in a large gallon for about 2 weeks.

The product is a concentrated fertilizer for use in the garden.

With that, you do not need other dangerous chemicals anymore.

Bunruean said that she does not only sell fresh galangal,

but also processes it in the form of fermented galangal and

galangal herbal drink. The white galangal, which is large, white,

and soft, is suitable for making a souvenir. The processed

galangal is an alternative business. However, the farm does

not make the processed product every day, but make to order.

Bunruean alone cannot do it all. It requires help from many

people, but the owner is glad if anyone would love to order.

With the various activities in this plantation, many public

organization, private business, schools, universities have come

to learn the organic farming here. Bunruean said with a smile

that her garden gladly welcomes everyone. “If you want to

learn, just come by”, Bunruean added at the end.

เปนเชนนนกเพราะขนตอนการท�าทตองใชระยะเวลาการก

วนตดตอกนกวา 5 ชวโมง จงตองอาศยแรงกายจากพนอง

เครอญาตหรอแมแตเพอนบาน คอยผลดเปลยนเวยนกนมา

ถอไมพายขนาดใหญ กวนขนมมงคลกนจนแลวเสรจ

“A full course meal must include both meat dishes

and desserts.” This practice of elderly generations may

not be found only in Thai customs. Looking back into

the past, all ethnic groups have their dessert formulas

passed on from generations to generations. As for Thai

desserts, they have wide reputation on delicacy, elegant

appearance and sharp sweetness. On the contrary,

western desserts look simple, but contain delicate taste.

But Mon desserts can be defined as desserts of union.

“Mon desserts require many people to prepare, for

example, you have to stir it on a stove for consecutive 5

hours. Even a young person cannot finish it by herself.”

This is a story told by Grandma Sudchai Yenchai,

aged 79 years, whose nickname is Mae Anong of Mon

desserts. She has sat in front of a stove longer than

60 years. She shared a story of brown sticky rice, - a

dessert of ancient time, which has existed even before

her childhood. It is a dessert made only during Thai

New Year and Songkran festival, as it is the time

when the family members gather in a year. Later, it

becomes a lucky dessert due to the union of people

required to prepare it. To prepare brown sticky rice,

it takes longer than 5 hours to stir ingredients on a

stove. Therefore, siblings and even neighbors have to

dedicate their labor, rotating to stir ingredients with a

big spatula until it is finished.

ค�าแรก “หวานจด” คณยายอนงคบอกวา น�าตาลปบทใชจะตอง

เปนน�าตาลปบแท ไมมสวนผสมของน�าตาลทราย ไมเชนนนเมอกวนออก

มาแลวจะเปนขยสขาว ขาวกจะไมยดเกาะกน ดไมนารบประทาน อกทง

การเลอกใชน�าตาลปบ เพราะตองการความหวานแหลมแตยงคงความ

หอมอนเปนเอกลกษณไว ไมเชนนนเมอเตมมะพราวขดลงไป รสชาตจะ

ออนลงจากเดม กลายเปนขาวเหนยวแดงรสจดออกหวานปะแลม ไมอรอย

ในขนตอนนจงตองกวนใหน�างวดลงพอประมาณและรสชาตออกหวานโดด

Actually, the cooking process of this light brown glutinous

dessert is not complicated. The most important secret is to stay

calm and be patient, plus some techniques of each family persisting

longer than a century. It starts from boiling water. Then some

coconut sugar is added and stirred until it is dissolved to be one

massive clump. Some steamy sticky rice is added. The ingredients

are stirred further for 3 hours until rice seeds are clear and hard.

Some shredded coconut is added and stirred further for 2 hours

until its texture is like bale fruit’s rubber. Lastly, extinguish fire with

ashes to keep some light heat from fire a little further. Move the

pan from the stove and wrap sticky rice with dried banana leaves.

Tie at the head and the end of the packet. Now it is ready to serve.

Grandma Anong quickly told us the whole cooking process

within 3 minutes without stopping, with a spatula in her hands.

She stirred brown sticky rice which began to be clear and emitted

luscious smell to appeal us for a while. We couldn’t help asking

her for permission to taste it, at least to guarantee the correctness

of content of this article. And this led to secrets of delicious taste

hidden in the preparation process.

The first bite is “sharp sweet.” Grandma Anong told us that

she uses only pure coconut sugar without combination of white

sugar, otherwise there would be white sugar residue in the dessert.

White sugar prevents the rice seeds from sticking together, and

the dessert would not look appealing. Using coconut sugar instead

of white sugar gives both sharp sweetness and unique good smell.

Without coconut sugar, the taste of shredded coconut would also

less prominent. It would become tasteless sticky rice with light

sweetness, and would not be delectable. Also while stirring, she

allowed some water to evaporate and kept its taste to be sharply

sweet.

เชอราได ตอมาคอเลอกใช ใบตองทแหงคาตน จะไดสน�าตาลออนหนกไป

ทางขาวนวล ตางจากการน�าใบตองสดมาอบ ซงจะออกไปทางสด�าคล�าไม

Coconut sugar increases the nice smell.

The second bite is “harmoniously sweet.” Shredded coconut

is an indispensable ingredient. If you search for cooking method

of brown sticky rice from the internet, you will find that most

websites recommend coconut milk, as it is convenient and saves

time. But Grandma Anong told us that this is another secret that

makes Mon brown sticky rice taste good and different from sticky

rice of other regions. She chooses only relatively ripened coconut,

as it gives thicker coconut texture. Hand-shredded coconut will

be more delicate and cleaner than machine-shredded coconut.

When coconut is mixed with sticky rice, coconut milk will slowly

absorb from shredded coconut, giving much better taste and smell.

Simmered coconut milk also softens the hard texture of rice making

it glutinous and appealing for chewing.

As you already know, perfect foods include good taste, nice

appearance, and appealing smell.

For us, the smell of sticky rice, simmered coconut milk and

shredded coconut is too appealing. But Grandma Anong said old

banana leaves that naturally dried up on trees are another secret

suggested by elderly generations. First of all, she uses only dry

banana leaves, as fresh banana leaves contain some moist. They

could cause fungus when wrapping sticky rice. Secondly, she

chooses only dry banana leaves that naturally dried up on trees.

Their color is light brown, almost white, different from fresh banana

leaves dried in an oven which are darker, not giving appealing look.

Lastly, brown sticky rice wrapped in dried banana leaves gives

light scent of banana leaves blended with coconut sugar’s smell.

It becomes long-lasting mild good smell, tempting you to taste it.

“Nowadays, I make this dessert often, not waiting for a festive

time.” This is her last sentence ending our conversation. She scooped

sticky rice onto banana leaves and passed it to her children who

bind the both ends of packets. They look like toffees of past time,

abundantly laid together. She does not have to wait for a festive time,

as this type of dessert is rare at present. And if it is delectable, it

will be even rarer. As a result, her dessert is popular for all ceremonies,

ranging from giving alms, wedding, and other auspicious ceremonies.

Most importantly, whenever she stirs sticky rice in a big pan, her

neighbors will come to help and have a nice conversation. Before

they know , it is already the time to remove the pan from the oven.

Owing to its quality ingredients, good taste, requirement of

patience and mutual support, the brown sticky rice, - the Mon dessert

of ancient time, still persists today. It is inherited from the past and

still exists to let the next generations know its taste and hidden

cooking wisdom, so that it would not disappear through the time.

Phra Sakkayamuni Sisumetbophit of Wat Bang Phli Yai Klang

Phra Sakkayamuni Sisumetbophit of Wat Bang Phli Yai

Klang, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan, is the largest reclining

Buddha in Thailand, with the total height of 18 meters and

the length from head to toe of 53 meters. The second and

third largest are Phra Non Wat Khun Inthapramun in Ang

Thong province, with the total length of 50 meters, and Phra

Non Chakkrasi in Sing Buri province, with the total length of

47 meters.

The Buddha posture of reclining was named upon the

nirvana of the Lord Buddha. The disciples collected all 9 postures,

e.g. the dreaming posture, preaching to Asura Rahu posture,

making a prophecy posture, preaching to Subhatha posture,

the Buddha preaching his last sermon posture, and the passing

away postures (3 postures), and the reclining Buddha just like

here at Wat Bang Phli Yai Klang.

The reclining Buddha was lying on his right side with his head

on the pillow and his left hand placed upon his body and right

hand face-up on the floor next to the pillow, and his feet one on

the other. The posture was exactly like in the Mahapuris Lakkhana

Monograph (sometimes referred to as Mahapuri Laksana). According

to this monograph, the posture signifies that the person with the 32

special characteristics will become a very important person referred

to as Bodhisattva. Some of the descriptions are Suppatitthipatho,

having both feet equal size, Hettha Pathatalesu Chokkani Chatani,

having one gear wheel on each of the sole of the foot.

The sculptors also cling to the descriptions on the book. With

this Phra Sakkayamuni Sisumetbophit of Wat Bang Phli Yai Klang,

too, the sculptors tried to make one foot of the Buddha image

toppled over the other, to present that the feet of the Lord Buddha

are equal in size and straight. The left hand placed on his body was

made straight toward his knee. On each of the sole of his feet, a

gear wheel was carved. However, the artisans sometimes considered

mainly on morale and human anatomy principles. That’s why the

image of the Buddha was lying on his right, his head on the pillow,

his left hand placed along the body, and his right hand face-up

against his face, to prevent the head from turning during the sleep.

The feet were made toppled each other as a symbol of having full

conscience all the time and ready to wake up at the scheduled time.

The reclining Buddha was made with the feet overlapped. The

middle part of the feet has the curve. When the left food overlaps the

right, the dent of the left side will fit on the top of the right. The rear

part of the right foot will bear the weight of the left foot just right.

That’s why the left foot does not fall down during the sleep. Both

feet are straight and the knees are a little bent, which is different

from the description in the Mahapuris Lakkhana Monograph. That

will make the kneecap of the left leg press upon the joint of the

right leg. The joint is soft and will support the left knee stably. The

left hand on the body will bend a little so that the weight falls at the

middle between the elbow and the end of the arm. These positions

are right to the anatomy of human being.

Long hands can reach the knees. Both feet are flat even Geer wheel patterns at the soles

ฝรงเศสเปนอยางมาก จนเปนทกลาวขานถงวรกรรมอนหาวหาญของ

ราชนาวไทย เมอเทยบกบก�าลงของมหาอ�านาจทมอยเหนอกวามาก

ตอมาในระหวางสงครามมหาเอเชยบรพา โรงไฟฟาสามเสนและ

วดเลยบไดถกทงระเบดจนไมสามารถผลตกระแสไฟฟาสงเขาไปยงเมอง

หลวงได กองทพเรอจงไดน�าเรอด�าน�าไปผลตและจายกระแสไฟฟา ท�าให

รถรางในกรงเทพฯ สามารถวงไดตามปกต ภายหลงสงครามสงบลง เรอ

ด�าน�าทงหมดไดปลดระวางประจ�าการไปเมอ 30 พฤศจกายน 2494 และ

เกบรกษาไวเปนอนสรณแกชนรนหลง

ระลอกคลนสฟาสลบขาว ขนาบดานซายและดานขวาดวยปลาโลมาโบราณ

ลอมรอบดวยวงกลมเกลยวเชอก เบองบนมรป พระมหามงกฎ มแถบ

ปลายแฉกสะบดขนทงสองขาง ตรงกลางแถบมค�าวา “กองเรอด�าน�า

Thai Royal Navy. These first generation naval vehicles comprise

of HTMS. Sinsamut, HTMS. Phlai Chumphon, HTMS. Matchanu

and HTMS. Wirun. They are the small coastal defense submarine

with 370 tons of freight drivers. Their first missions began in 1937

during the World War II. The Thai Royal Navy sent the four

submarines to patrol around Ream Naval Base near the

Indochinese Peninsula to prevent the infiltration of French fleet.

The submarines stayed underwater to observe the situation 12

hours a day. The operation was feared by the French and the

bravery of Thai Royal Navy has been stated to be brave to stand

against the stronger fleet of the westerners.

During the Pacific War, the Sam Sen and Wat Liap Power

Plants were destroyed by the bombs that they could not generate

the electricity to feed the capital. The Thai Royal Navy sent the

submarines to generate and supply the power so that the trains

in Bangkok could operate as normal. After the end of the war, all

the submarines were discharged on 30 November 1951 and kept

as the memorial for the later generations.

HTMS. Matchanu I, having the total length of 51 meters,

width 4.1 meters, height 11.65 meters, sinking into the water about

3.6 meters, using 2 units of 1100 hp diesel engines. The submarine

was named after a character in Ramayana who could dive into the

water. Lieutenant Sui (Kanok) Nopphakhun was the commander

in chief. The ship was first laid down on 6 May 1936. The three

other ships were also named after characters from major Thai

literary works, namely, HTMS. Wirun named after a character from

Ramayana, HTMS. Sinsamut from Phra Aphai Mani, and HTMS.

Phlai Chumphon from Khun Chang Khun Phaen.

In addition, the HTMS. Matchanu also appeared on the

sigil of the Submarine Squadron. The black HTMS. Matchanu

was on the background which showed the blue and white ripples

of tide, flanked by 2 dolphins on each left and right sides, encircled

by rope, and above it stands a crown with the end of the halo

flowing from both sides. The middle of the sigil reads “Submarine

Squadron, Royal Thai Fleet” in Thai.

Today, some parts of the HTMS. Matchanu are stored at

the Naval Museum on Sukhumvit Road, Pak Nam Sub-District,

Mueang District, Samut Prakan. For more information, please call

Bhumibol I Bridge and Bhumibol II Bridge were

recorded as the double cable-stayed bridges that were

built within the shortest time in the world. The bridges

were completed within 4 months despite the plan of 6

months. In 2010, King Bhumibhol and Princess Sirindhorn

rode on the Angsana Royal Fleet to preside over the

opening ceremony of Bhumibhol Bridges and Lat Pho

Canal Watergate in the middle of the Chao Phraya River,

in the area of Samut Prakan Province.

Bhumibol I Bridge is the link between Bang Phong

Phang Sub-District of Bangkok and Song Khanong

Sub-District of Samut Prakan Province. It is a cable-stayed bridge

with 7 lanes. The longest span crossing the river is 326 meters,

and the support length is 128 meters, making 454 meters long in

total. The body of the bridge, measured at the middle, is about

50 meters above sea level.

Bhumibol II Bridge links Song Khanong Sub-District

of Samut Prakan Province and Bang Ya Phraek Sub-District

of Samut Prakan Province. It is a cable-stayed bridge with

7 lanes. The longest span crossing the river is 398 meters,

and the support length is 152 meters, making 550 meters

long in total. The body of the bridge, measured at the

middle, is about 50 meters above sea level. This bridge

is like the gate for the cargo fleet from the mouth of the

Chao Phraya River toward Khlong Toei Port of Bangkok.

The two cable-stayed bridges meet at Khlong Lat

Pho Park in Phra Pradaeng District. The contractor built

from both side and finished the construction at the

middle. During daytime, passersby will see a huge structure

and architecture. By night, the yellow light reflecting the

bridges across the river is the structure that marks the

city, contrast with the white light from the Lat Pho Canal

Watergate down below, making this area an important view

point both from land and from the boat’s point of view.

ส�าคญตอสายน�าเสมอนบานของตน พธกรรมหลายอยางเรมเลอนหาย

ไปพรอมความเจรญทางสงคม ความเชอดงเดมแปรเปลยนไปตาม

กาลเวลา แต ณ หมบานชาวประมง ต�าบลคลองดาน อ�าเภอบางบอ

จงหวดสมทรปราการ ยงคงรวมสบทอดพธกรรมแหงความเชอและ

ศรทธาของชมชนมาแลวกวาครงศตวรรษ

Since old times, the way of life of fisherman village has

been bound with beliefs and water-related rites including

establishment of riverside shrines, squibs to worship sacred

things prior to doing fishing and paying respect and regarding

the stream as their homes. Many rites have gradually faded

away amid social civilization. Although traditional beliefs

changed as times goes by, here at the fisherman village in

Khlong Dan Sub-district, Bang Bo District, Samut Prakan

Province, local people have continued to preserve traditional

rites based on ancient beliefs and faiths of the community

for more than a half of century.

Story Told

Junk Floating Ceremony in Khlong Dan was originated from

strong faith in the sacred Chao Pho Saen and Chao Mae Sam

Muk since the establishment of the community that the shrine will

always protect all fishermen every time they go fishing and come

back with abundant food. Junk releasing to the Gulf of Thailand

of people in Khlong Dan has two main objectives: to annually

thank and pay respect to the sacred things for always protecting

all fishermen and to ask if the community will be abundant with

crops and food from the sea throughout the year.

Miss Nokeiang Kimyong or Sister Nokeiang tells that the

junk floating ceremony of Khlong Dan residents has different

patterns and beliefs from other communities. Firstly, junk floating

is not meant to release sorrow or sufferings, but it refers to a

ship abundant with crops and seafood released to the sea to ask

for blessings for the community. Unlike other communities where

junks are released from the coast, local residents in Khlong Dan

take the junk to the Gulf of Thailand and then release it. It is

believed that if the junk reaches any district or community, it

would bring abundance and prosperity throughout the year.

ขะมกเขมน สงแรก คอ การตอเรอส�าเภา ซงชาวบานจะชวยกนลงขนเรยไรเงน

ตามก�าลง สรางเรอขนาดใหญเพยงพอรองรบผชายได 4-5 คน ส�าหรบใสเครอง

ถวายทงอาหารขาวของเครองใช ตกตา รปปนนางร�าหรอกระทงเงนทองตามความ

เชอและศรทธาของแตละคน เมอถงวนพธ เรอส�าเภาจะถกน�าไปตงไวบรเวณศาล

เจาพอแสน – เจาแมสามมข เพอประกอบพธกรรมตงชอและร�าถวาย โดยในปน

(2558) ไดชอวา ส.แสนหา ๙๖๗

จากนน ชาวบานจะชวยกนยกเรอขนรถแหไปตามถนน โดยมขบวนดนตรและ

ท�าบญและขอพรเปนการใหญ จากนนเรอส�าเภาจะถกน�าไปขนเรอประมงบรเวณทาน�า

กอนลองออกสอาวไทย ซงมเรอกลองยาวคอยบรรเลงน�าหนาขบวน ตามดวยเรอพธ

และปดทายดวยเรอผตดตาม เมอเรอแลนหางจากฝงราว 3 – 4 กโลเมตร ชาวบาน

จะท�าพธปลอยเรอส�าเภาลงสน�า จดธปบอกกลาว ขอพรสงศกดสทธใหประสบแต

ความรมเยน จากนนจงกลบเขาฝงและตงตาคอยวาในปนเรอส�าเภาจะลองเขาสชมชน

หรอไม

About one week prior to the rite, local residents hastily

prepare lots of necessities. It starts with junk building process in

which local residents help funding and building a junk large enough

for 4-5 persons and filled with offerings, food, basic necessities,

dolls, dancing girl figures and even money depending on individual

belief and faith. Upon the ceremony date, the junk is placed near

Chao Pho Saen and Chao Mae Sam Muk Shrine for the naming

ceremony and offering dancing performance. This year (2015) the

junk is named Sor. Saen Ha 967.

Then local residents help carry the junk for a parade in the

district’s road accompanied by a music band and tom-tom dance.

People along the road are invited to participate in merit making

and asking for blessings. After that the junk is placed onto a

fishing boat before releasing to the Gulf of Thailand. The ritual

boat is led by a boat of tom-tom dance and followed by a boat

of followers. After going 3-4 kilometers away from the coast, the

residents release the ritual junk to the sea and also light incenses

to tell and ask for blessings. Then they go back home and

anticipate the junk to reach the community this year.

“The ritual junk doesn’t come back to Khlong Dan every

year and sometimes it disappears or sails to other districts. But

every time the junk is coming back to our community, it is a

year that all fishermen have caught lots of fish whereas other

marine animals in their farms sell well, there are abundant crops

and local people feel happy. It is about the belief and one of the

reasons that people in Khlong Dan still hold on to and continue

the traditional rite”, says Sister Nokeiang.
