The challenge:Provide enhanced air conditioning for new franchised Starbucks outlet23.5 Degrees˚ operates more than 35 franchised Starbucks outlets across Southern England and East Anglia. It opened its fi rst store in February 2013 and has been steadily growing ever since. For its newest store, a Starbucks restaurant near Emsworth, Hampshire, the company turned to air conditioning reseller and installer DCI Refrigeration & Electrical Limited to investigate the latest innovations in air conditioning.

23.5 Degrees˚ was looking for an effi cient and quiet air conditioning system that was also aesthetically pleasing, to fi t in with the upscale environment it was seeking to create at the branch.

DCI Refrigeration & Electrical Limited came up with a shortlist of options for 23.5 Degrees˚,

led by Samsung’s industry-fi rst 360 degree air conditioning system. This unique bladeless cassette eliminates the areas of cold drafts associated with traditional air conditioning units, creating a natural-feeling, even airfl ow.

Samsung’s 360 cassette system is a new standard in heating and cooling and has the added benefi t of being built around stylish, contemporary looking circular cassettes rather than the usual square air conditioning units.

“I was in discussions with Mark Hepburn [Managing Director of 23.5 Degrees˚] about Samsung’s new 360 cassette unit, which had just come onto the market. Aside from off ering many practical benefi ts, it was a very aesthetically pleasing option that would fi t in with the cosmopolitan style of 23.5 Degrees˚’ Starbucks builds,” explains John Norman, Sales Director, DCI Refrigeration & Electrical Limited.

It’s really easy to notice just how easy the air feels on you under the 360 unit. There are no dead zones – it gives you very clear air conditioning right across 360 degrees. The way the air moves around is very diff erent to a conventional air conditioning cassette. It provides a much more natural feeling. Mark HepburnManaging Director, 23.5 Degrees˚

The solution:Samsung’s 360 degree air conditioning systemThe stylish design of the unit and the luxurious feel of the air conditioning provided by the 360 degree system were enough to convince Hepburn to put his backing behind the brand new technology for his latest Starbucks outlet. 23.5 Degrees˚ then worked with DCI to specify, supply and install the groundbreaking air conditioning system, with Samsung providing additional technical support for the new technology.

“The use of the 360 degree unit at 23.5 Degrees˚’ Emsworth branch of Starbucks is the very fi rst time we’ve had a chance to install Samsung’s new technology,” says Norman, who has worked with Hepburn on a number of previous air conditioning installations at 23.5 Degrees˚ branches of Starbucks.

“After talking with Mark about the benefi ts of the 360 cassette system – its draft-free technology, bladeless air fl ow and great design – he agreed it lent itself extremely well to what he was after for Starbucks Emsworth,” adds Norman.

“It’s really easy to notice just how easy the air feels on you under the 360 unit,” says Hepburn. “You don’t have that draft of warm or cold air coming out of it; it just feels comfortable and right and doesn’t vary depending on where you’re standing.”

“There are no dead zones – it gives you very clear air conditioning right across 360 degrees,” he adds. “The way the air moves around is very diff erent to a conventional air conditioning cassette. It provides a much more natural feeling.”

“Everything is round in the Emsworth Starbucks branch – the hanging lights, the spotlights, the

wall lights and so on, so the shape of the 360 air conditioning unit immediately slotted into the space and fi tted in with the design aesthetic,” says Hepburn. “The branch also has hand-drawn murals on the walls including a prominent image of a compass, which again only emphasised the theme of the design.”

Another feature of the 360 degrees unit that appealed to 23.5 Degrees˚ is its ability to change the level of air conditioning supplied to diff erent sections of a building. “The 360 cassette is zonal in control, so you have the ability to adapt how the air moves,” explains Norman. “This means you can manoeuvre the air, to direct it to where staff are standing, for example. This was really useful in Starbucks where all the staff tend to be around the counter area.”

The result:A pleasant, natural feeling airfl ow enjoyed by customers and staff The Emsworth branch of Starbucks has been open for a little over a month and, says Norman: “23.5 Degrees˚ absolutely love it. We’re already looking at installing it at another of its Starbucks branches. I love the fact that Samsung has looked at air conditioning and challenged the accepted norm to create something completely new with huge advantages over anything that’s gone before.”

“It’s ideal for any internal public spaces. We have a broad client base we think would now be really interested in the 360 degree system. The installation of the device is pretty much identical to a conventional installation, and Samsung can supply either the round or square facia to enable the unit to fi t in with the design of diff erent interiors. It would work equally as well for any of our clients.”

Samsung’s 360 degree air conditioningSamsung’s 360 cassette air conditioning system

has a list of advantages over conventional systems.

It evenly circulates and cools every corner of the

room, unlike 4-way cassette type air conditioners

that create areas of uneven airfl ow. The unit creates

air that’s comfortably cool, not unpleasantly cold, as

its bladeless design softly disperses cool air across

the room. Added to this, it expels 25% more air

and spreads it further. The system uses a patented

negative pressure fan feature to bend and swing the

air vertically. This is similar to a conventional bladed

cassette that enables cool air to come out parallel

to the ceiling and disperse across a wider area.
