Air Conditioning Contractors Association of Greater Houston
Volume 1 Issue 4 April 2015
1955. The Original
BE A PART OF THE CHANGE!
The Air Conditioning Council of Greater Houston started with its local roots in Houston in 1955. Our Chapter has seen many changes as we celebrate our 60th year as your premier HVAC/R Trade Association, including a recent name change to Air Conditioning Contractors Association of Greater Houston.
ACCA-GH is undergoing another change. As many of you are aware, ACCA at the National level has made a business decision to “de-federate” with all local and state chapters. What does this mean to you as a member. It means that we going back to our roots and you will no longer be required to join ACCA National. It also means that we are adopting our former name, Air Conditioning Contractors Association of Greater Houston. Further, as a member of Air Conditioning Contractors Association of Greater Houston, you will continue to retain all of the benefits of our affiliation with TACCA.
We are excited about this change. For many members who have not been able to join due to the high dues cost, NOW is the time to get involved. Please join me and make the deci-sion to keep it local!
As a local member, you will continue to enjoy the benefits at both the Local and State level. These benefits include:
Dinner and Networking Events
Local and State Lobbying and Legislative Efforts
Collaboration with Local Building Inspectors
Relationship with TDLR
Local and State Wesbite and Online Directory
Local and State Training Courses at reduced rates
Free Classroom Based Continuing Education
The CompPac Trust of Texas Workers Compensation Trust
If you have received an invoice from ACCA National to participate in their ”Join Now for a limited time offer”, please be aware that you are not joining at the local/state level. As your membership comes up for renewal, you will receive an invoice from TACCA. For prospec-tive members, please feel free to contact me (713) 781-4822 to join.
IN CLOSING, WHAT STAYS LOCAL, GROWS LOCAL IN 2015!

HVAC and Home Performance:
The Contractors Cause for Home
Performance (#11776)
Tech Tip #4-15
“Rules of Thumb”
Seems like we all have and use a number of “Rules of Thumb” pertaining to HVAC. Have you ever asked or wondered where they
came from? If you did ask, you were proba-bly told that they have been around forever and possibly an accepted Industry Standard. Well as the industry has evolved with mod-ern technology, the Rules of Thumb are what
should now be called “Old Wives Tales or MYTHS of A/C.”
Just to name a few:
500 square foot per ton to size a/c sys-
tems now requires a ACCA Manual J load calculation.
Adding a 1/2 ton more when replacing a unit or system now requires using ACCA
Manual S to properly size the new equip-ment.
Using .1 inches of water column on our Duct Calculator to size duct work now re-
quires using ACCA Manual D to properly size our duct work.
And one square foot of filter surface is right for one ton of a/c.
These are just a few of the many we use daily
and some are not working well with the new equipment. The reason is the “Rules of Thumb” worked for a specific time period. We as an industry are way past those times.
Like the old rule of thumb for getting to Gal-veston “USED TO BE HOURS” but that was on horseback. How long does it take today?
Regards,
John Burg

Sam Says:
Just as ACCA National is changing, as is the world around us, gone are the days solely of word of mouth recommendations. Welcome to the world of Yelp, Google, Angies List, Facebook, Twitter etc. What forms of social media do you participate in with your compa-ny? How can social media benefit you? There is a won-derful article on page 3, written by Sherry Zarske of Marketing Depot, Inc. that can go deeper into this top-ic. If that article doesn’t answer all your questions, we have a great social media and grass roots marketing speaker at this month’s meeting. We are incredibly lucky to have Russ Johns of Next Step Next speaking at this month’s meeting on April 21st. Don’t forget that this month we are at our new location at the Crowne Plaza at Reliant.
We are finishing up preparations for our annu-al Shoot Out on Friday April 10th, I hope to see many of
you there! Nationwide Insurance, Kathy & Terry Slater, are sponsoring the incredible camo Cooler Bags as our event awards. I have to say the office has secured some dynamic raffle prices, there is a Klein Tools backpack that I know I will have my eye on winning in the raffle!
Summer Gala tickets are officially on sale! Get yours while you can for your chance to win one of 6 gift card prizes available. This year’s theme is a Night in Wine Country. We are looking forward to offering some delicious wines for you to enjoy tasting. We will be opening the doors at 6pm on June 16th and the auction begins at 6:30. We are happy to be back at the SPJST Lodge this year and looking forward to a delicious meal and open bar. Hope to see everyone there supporting our largest non-dues revenue event.
Thanks, See you at our Shoot Out or April Monthly
Meeting.

Voitle’s Voice:
Social Media Frenzy! Many of you may question, What
is Social Media? A simple explanation is social media is
a social instrument of communication. In other words,
it is a two-way street that gives you the ability to com-
municate and interact.
Many of you are already using many social media tools;
however, the market is constantly changing and rein-
venting itself. As a result of the content overload, I felt
it important to invite a speaker this month to dispel
some of the myths and offer some guidelines about
how to optimize and implement many social media
tools. Please mark your calendars, April 21st, and join
us for an exciting and interactive meeting.
As always, If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact our office (713) 781-4822.

Beginner’s Guide To Social Media
Is Social Media For You?
Before we jump into our begin-
ners guide to social media, we
have to ask: is social media even
right for you? Are you the kind of
person who likes to “live out
loud?” Do you embrace technol-
ogy, have a dedicated IT person,
or do you want to hire a social media organi-
zation? If you answered yes to any of these
questions, then please continue reading.
Business owners are constantly getting over-
whelmed with the must-do marketing strate-
gies discussed on the internet. They also get
disillusioned by fact that the web is free, so
they think that they should be doing it. Noth-
ing in life is free; at the minimum it costs you
time and, well… time is money. Our advice to
business owners is this: just like you were se-
lective with your traditional media and mar-
keting, you should be equally selective with
online marketing. Social media is essentially
the equivalent to referral marketing. If you do
a good job with referral marketing, then social
media will be a natural fit for your company’s
marketing strategy.
Now that you’ve decided you do want to use
social media for marketing your business, here
are a few tips that should help you getting
started:
Be Selective
Only start what you can manage to comple-tion. Typically, we recommend only trying to maintain one or two social media accounts at a time, so you should never start more social media accounts than you can actively interact and engage. If you’re feeling brave, there are tools like Buffer or Evernote to help automate and manage multiple social media accounts.
Nothing says that you care less about your company than when a consum-er posts a relevant comment that goes unanswered. It would be the equivalent of not answering your phone – it’s just bad business! So only choose the number of platforms that you can main-tain actively. Consistency – Consistency –
Consistency
Start with the basics. Since the search engines
use an algorithm to display their results, it is
critically important for you to be consistent
and PRECISE.
Be intentional with your company details.
It is important that all of your business details
match exactly, everywhere. If you abbreviate
east as E., then stay true to that format. If you
spell street on a document, don’t abbreviate it
as St. – keep it consistent! Every business
document that you fill out has the potential to
end up in a database somewhere. Data gets
sold and transferred, which means it has the
potential to end up on the internet. So do
yourself a favor and make your data work for
you, and not against you. Since the smallest
discrepancy can hurt your online presence, we
recommend that our clients create a docu-
ment that has all of the information that you
usually provide such as:
Company Name(s)
Company Address(es)
Phone Number(s)
E-mail Address(es)
Services Offered
Service Areas
Company Bio and History
Hours and Availability
Payment Options Available
Along with any other information that is standard for your company
From that point forward, that document will be the go-to source for your company profile. Use this document when you set up all of your advertising contracts and social media ac-counts to ensure that you are consistent across every platform. To really make sure that it’s consistent, only copy and paste from that original document. Try to create your profile by not typing, except where absolutely necessary. Background Image At Setup:
Every social media platform is different, but
most of them will encourage you to brand
yourself with a photo and/or a background
cover image. Each platform has different rules
concerning sizes and formats, so you’ll want
to make sure that you have logos and images
that fit the guidelines set by each platform.
These profile photos and background covers
are the first things that people see when they
click on your account or see you pop up in
their news feed, so make sure you are putting
your best image forward. We’ve created a
handy guide to help you understand the right
sizing for each social media platform at:

image-sizes
Volumes have been written about marketing on social media, but this is just the beginner’s guide to social media setup.
