The Indian economy is moving at a good speed. The three engines of
growth namely infrastructure, consumption and outsourcing are firing at a
rapid speed of above 9% p.a. The requirement of investment in
infrastructure alone is close to USD 50 billion per year for next five years.
With these exponentially rising trajectories in most sectors, the Indian
economy is expected to double itself in close to nine years. This huge
investment in infrastructure is certainly going to accelerate the growth of
security industry in India, which is presently estimated to be around Rs. 800
crores. The Government, individuals and particularly commercial and
institutional organizations are now increasingly focusing on their security
arrangements in a more proactive rather than reactive manner.
During the year the Consumer Service Group launched its products for the
home and retail segment. This is just the beginning of new era in security
industry where your company has taken an initiative in offering security
solutions for millions of homes and retail shops across the country by
creating a new business model in retailing of security products in India.
More than 18 shops were opened on a company owned and dealer
operated (CODO) basis. I am happy to share the fact, that the response of
the consumers is encouraging enough to plan for more than 300 outlets in

the current financial year. To increase its pace in this direction, the
company has tied up with the Future Group and other big retailers to set up
Zicom Shops in large retail formats on Shop-in-Shop basis. Our flagship
business of providing security solutions to the government, commercials
and industrial establishments continues to perform well, as can be seen by
the growth in the top line of your company.
I would also like to share with you the two most important
accomplishments of Zicom. The first being the acquisition of 49% stake in
Unisafe Fire Protection Specialists L.L.C, Dubai in UAE. With this acquisition
we are aiming to participate in the infrastructure growth in the Middle East
market. The second one being setting up a subsidiary in Hong Kong for
taking up manufacturing activities in China and to promote international
sale of Zicom branded products. This is a beginning of our vision to make
Zicom a Global Company.
On the financial front, we are planning huge investments in direct
marketing to take our security distribution network to over 100 cities in the
country. We have obtained your consent for USD 35 million FCCB issue for
funding our plans for both organic and inorganic growth. The best

has awarded the tender to install and maintain additional 463 closed-circuit
cameras at all the stations on the Western line from Churchgate to Virar for
a year at a cost of Rs 1.21 crore.
The Western Railway (WR) has awarded the tender to Zicom, a company
dealing in electronic security systems. The company will install and
maintain these 463 cameras for the next one year in addition to the existing
57 it has already installed at seven major stations on the Western line.
"Soon, 520 cameras (57 plus 463) will be operational at the entry and exit
points of our suburban stations. It will be a big achievement as far as
security is concerned. As WR has hired these cameras from Zicom, it will be
the duty of the company to maintain them," Satyaprakash, the divisional
railway manager (WR), told Newsline.
"The footage from these cameras will be saved for seven days and will be
monitored by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at each station," he
said.

According to WR officials, the cameras will be installed over the next one
month at the entry and exit points of all stations between Churchgate and
Virar. According to WR sources, the tenders were floated three months ago
and the contract was awarded to Zicom last week.
As of now, 57 cameras are operational on the Western line at Churchgate,
Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra suburban, Bandra Terminus, Andheri and
Borivali stations.
On the Central line, 70 cameras are operational at eight major stations -
CST main, CST suburban, Dadar, Kurla, LTT, Thane, Kalyan and Vashi.
According to Central Railway sources, a proposal for 1,500 cameras was
sent to the Railway Board a year ago. "But we are still waiting for the
approval," said S C Mudgerikar, the chief public relations officer, CR.
The move comes soon after the installation of cameras in ladies
compartments to keep troublemakers at bay.

Managing average performers
Statistically speaking, even in the highest-performing organisations,
average performers form the largest part of the staff. This stems
from the basic characteristic of normal distribution. While the
organisational success is determined by its top talent, it is the
average performing employee base which takes the centre-stage at
the basic execution level. The average performers are those who
hold the fort and ensure that all transactional activities in an
organisation are dutifully completed, notes Vinit Durve, VP -
corporate human resources, Zicom Electronic Security Systems.
Average performers form the backbone of any organisation and
carry forward the lineage of the company. They are necessary for
the continuity of an organisation, Durve asserts. The obvious
question that arises then is what can organisations do to further

motivate and harness this groups potential? Organisations should
build systems and processes to enable their ordinary employees to
give extra-ordinary results, opines B. Anant, head HR, ICICI
Lombard. Durve adds, This group gets motivated by getting them
to upgrade their skills in their own areas of specialisation and
providing them new tools to do the same work. That is what firms
should focus on.
So are firms doing anything to efficiently manage this employee
base? We strive to offer both equal opportunities as well as equal
access to resources to our entire employee base including this
group, says Mandavi Sharma, VP, operations, Jindal Intellicom.
Shedding light on the initiatives and programmes undertaken for
this set of workforce, Sharma adds, We have a process
enhancement department which focuses on developing middle-tier
performers. There is a constant loop of re-training and feedback
that average performers are put through. The idea behind this is to
convert average performers into high performers and thereby, push
the average upwards.

The other area that firms need to look at is valuing the contribution
of this employee group. The best method is to recognise the
importance of the job being done even if it is mundane. They
have to be kept motivated by constant acknowledgement, e.g. the
loader with a domestic airline likes to be recognised for loading and
unloading the baggage on time, Durve asserts.
Moreover, every employee specialises in some field of work and it
lies in the hands of the management to identify this talent and
nurture it accordingly. Many firms especially in the new age sectors
like IT/ITES are taking proactive measures to address the same.
Sharma cites her firms example, We offer a multitude of
opportunities and facilities to this employee group. One of them is
skill mapping and career growth opportunities where the focus is on
fitting the right employee to the right job. The other is the strong
reward and recognition system, wherein, even the tenured
employees are recognised and rewarded for organisational loyalty.

In addition to this, Jindal Intellicom has an appraisal system which
ensures that 100 per cent of average performers are rewarded, both
under the monthly bonus programme as well as annual appraisals.
In a nutshell, our average performers are very much a part of the
mainstream and do not feel isolated or neglected, Sharma points
out.
While there is a gradual change in the way firms are investing in this
large employee base, it is yet to become a trend across sectors. Will
this be just another management trend confined to the realms of
new age sectors or trickle across? Only time will tell.
