Ramprasad Bismil an icon of bravery and one of the great Indian freedom fighters was born on 11th June 1897 in Shahjanpur in Uttar

Pradesh. His extraordinary feat of organizing revolutionary activities against the colonial rule in India and further making the supreme sacrifice for the sake of motherland enabled him to carve out a special niche in the annals of history of India's struggle for freedom.

At a young age he plunged into India's freedom struggle. While he was studying in eight class he had seen the session of Indian National Congress.

Very early in his life, Bismil came in contact with intellectuals and revolutionaries. Therefore, he started keeping firearms with him from an early age and also contacted many revolutionaries. He took to the armed revolution when Bhai Parmanand was hanged in 1916. His act on revolutionary line marked a new phase so called 'Militant Era' in the history of India.

Having a revolutionary mind se t , he had no f a i t h i n constitutional agitation. He believed that by terrorizing the B r i t i s h o f f i c i a l t h r o u g h revolutionary activities, he would be able to demoralize the entire machinery of the government and bring about freedom. It was a period of unrest in country with large section of people in India were clamoring for freedom from political oppression and economic exploitation of the British.

In order to disseminate the message of nationalism among the common masses and organize armed revolution to overthrow the colonial rule he played a very vital role in the formation of the 'Hindustan Republic Association'. To raise the funds

for revolutionary activities, on 9th August 1925 a group of revolutionaries led by Ramprasad Bismil held up the 8-Down train which was going from Hardoi to Lucknow at a place near Kakori and looted it's railway cash. The government act was quick and hard. It arrested a large number of young men including Ramprasad Bismil and tried them in the Kakori conspiracy case. Four of them such as Ramprasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah, Roshan Singh and Rajender Lahri were sentenced to death and hanged, and others were sent to exile. Mighty Raj could not dim the spirit of

courage of Ramprasad Bismil and his aides who faced the sentence of death with smiling faces.

Thus, heroic deeds of Ramprasad Bismil became a saga in villages and towns of northern India and the rest of India also resounded with his name.

Besides being a staunch pa t r i o t i c and a ha rdcore revolutionary, he also had high caliber of poetic genius. Every line of his poem throbs with patriotic f e r vo r. I n one poem, he prays,“Even if I have to face death a thousand times for the sake of my motherland, it shall not sadden me. Oh Lord! Grant me a hundred

births in Bharat. But grant me this, too, that each time I may give up my life in the service of the Motherland.”

Although, Ramprasad Bismil and his followers failed to create a desirable impact against the mighty British empire yet he made an abiding contribution to the national freedom movement. His deep patriotic courage and determination and sense of sacrifice stirred the Indian people. He helped spread nationalist consciousness that became a source of inspiration for the upcoming generation in India.
