Welcome back to our families for what will hopefully be a more ‘normal’ Term 3.

The beginning of Term 3 sees a number of updates from the Department regarding

full-time face to face teaching and learning. Please take the time to read the following

information.

Term 3 updates

All students should be learning on-campus unless they are unwell or have a medical certificate to support their absence. Schools continue to be safe and operations are in line with the Australian Health Pro-tection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health advice All schools will be vigilant when implementing infection control, physical distancing and personal hygiene protocols to protect the health and safety of students and staff. Schools will promote the need to follow good hygiene practices like:

regularly washing hands

avoiding sharing drinks or food

coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue which should be discarded im mediately

filling water bottles from bubblers rather than using the bubbler directly. Most activities permitted at school and will be conducted in a way that is safe and ap-propriate in a living in COVID-19 environment. Those that remain on hold will be re-viewed during the term and will recommence when appropriate based on health and other relevant advice. School attendance We would like to remind parents and carers not to send students to school if they are unwell, even if they have mild symptoms. Schools will make appropriate arrange-ments to return students home if they become unwell at school. Students should be at school unless:

they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition and the expected timeframe

they are currently unwell. School activities/school site usage

The majority of school-based activities can recommence, as long as the following measures are observed:

all visitors and external to school providers must adhere to relevant hygiene, dis-

tancing and safety protocols

principals may continue to restrict, limit or prohibit activities if they are seen as contrary to the current health advice

external providers and visitors are required to demonstrate compliance with health and safety requirements including adhering to strict guidelines and completing relevant forms

non-essential adults are still not permitted on school grounds or at school events – this includes parents/carers unless specifically approved by the principal. Physical distancing

Physical distancing of children in schools is not required under the AHPPC guidelines.

All adults must maintain physical distance from each other (1.5m) including teachers and support staff, and par-ents. Parents should ensure school pick up and drop off arrangements enable them to physically distance from one an-other and from staff.

School cleaning and hygiene supplies

Your school will continue to receive additional cleaning in line with the AHPPC guidelines and advice from NSW Health. Target areas include high-touch areas and other hard surfaces, door handles, lockers, light switches and handrails in stairways and movement areas. There will also be additional cleaning of toilets and bubblers and top-ping up of supplies like soap. Your school has received supplies of soap, hand sanitiser, toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectant wipes and per-sonal protective equipment. The school is able to order more as needed.

less involving serious matters that require face to face discussion. Activities under consideration from Term 3

The following events will be reconsidered in Term 3. For now these events must remain on hold.

Kindergarten orientation

School camps

Excursions (other than field trips explained above)

Parent attendance at assemblies and other school events (e.g. graduation ceremonies or student speech events)

Parent volunteers – e.g. parent reading helpers (note: canteen and uniform shop volunteers are permitted)

Interstate excursions

School-based activities that involve large gathering of adults are not permitted at this time. These include parent/community gatherings such as parent functions, working bees, fundraisers, school BBQs, large parent in-formation evenings, and large on-site cultural events. These large gatherings and the following activities will con-tinue to be reviewed and assessed based on AHPPC and NSW Health advice and may be permitted at a later date. This advice can also be accessed here: https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families We will contin-ue to inform you if this advice changes. Staffing This term we welcome back Mrs Thompson to her role as Learning and Support Teacher on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She will continue to support students in literacy and numeracy. I would also like to introduce Mrs Neal to our staff for this semester. Mrs Neal will teach K/1F on Tuesdays whilst Mrs Fisher undertakes an as-piring leader role to support school initiatives. I would also like to thank Miss O’Sullivan and Mr Pell for sup-porting our students during Term 2. Virtual assemblies The need to continue our virtual assemblies remains in place. Two of our School Captains lead these assemblies via Microsoft Teams and rotate each week. Photos of our award winners will continue to be placed in our news-letters each fortnight.

Attendance challenge

For the last four weeks of last term I set the students a challenge to see which class could have the highest per-

centage of students arriving on time. This resulted in the number of students arriving late to school decreasing

dramatically. The results for the four weeks are listed below.

Week 7 Week 8 Week 9 Week 10

K/1F 12% 13% 6% 6%

2/3N 7% 6% 3% 5%

3/4S 7% 3% 2% 4%

5/6H 15% 13% 7% 5%

Congratulations to 3/4S for being our winning class with the lowest percentage of students arriv-

ing late each week. They were rewarded with 30 minutes of extended play at recess. Congratulations also to 5/6H

for being the biggest improvers over the four weeks and were given an additional 15 minutes of play time.

A big thank you to all of our parents and carers who supported their children with this challenge as being at

school on time is vitally important. Keep up the great work. I wonder who will win this term’s late arrival chal-

lenge.

Rewards Day

Congratulations to all of the students who attended our Term 2 Rewards Day for showing that they were positive,

respectful and safe learners. Due to the number of restrictions still on schools we had to be creative with our re-

ward last term. Students participated in individual class parties filled with classic party games including Pass the

Parcel and Musical Chairs and ice cream spiders. It was a great afternoon that the students (and staff) really en-

joyed.

Reports

Semester One reports were sent home at the end of last term. Due to the inability to have parents/carers on site

for meetings we are unable to conduct our Student-Led Conferences as we have in previous years. Should you

wish to discuss aspects of your child’s report, please contact your child’s teacher via phone or email. Thank you

for your understanding.

LIBRARY NEWS

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Salt Ash has a proud history of students meeting the Challenge which only has a few weeks to go.

Due to Covid-19 students in year 3-6 are now able to record up to ten free choices so please record the titles and

authors of books read, bring them to school and I will record them.

We have several students who have already met the Challenge.

Aleisha showed true leadership and completed the Challenge in term one. Other students who have since fin-

ished are:

Cora, Blake S, Braxton, Jasmine, Lilly, Khloe, Maddison, Lily and Tara.

Congratulations!

A reminder that all Library books are now due for return. We encourage regular borrowing and returning of

books. Research shows children who read regularly perform better at school.
