FIRST NOTES “But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power.” Acts 2:24 As I think about these first weeks after Easter Sunday, I am struck by the image of a Jesus who is continuously on the move, and moving ahead. When you get right down to it, Easter is all about the Jesus who cannot be stopped. Death thought that it could stop Jesus, but it was powerless to do so. The tomb could not hold him back. Those who were responsible for Jesus’ death, were unable to stop him. Caiaphas, Pontius Pilate, and the full force of Roman might could not put an end to his work. Locked doors and fearful hearts were not enough to prevent his entrance. Jesus is on the move during the days of Easter. He is moving past the limits of being held to just one time and place. He is moving towards glorification. He is moving towards the timeless and the eternal. And as Jesus moves ahead, he invites us to come with him. He invites us to put aside our paralyzing fear and anxiety and journey with him. He invites us to become servants in the service of others. He asks us to embrace the full cost and joy of discipleship. He asks us to trust in the promises of life eternal resurrection and the hope of resurrection. Jesus moves on ahead, but he invites us to follow in his footsteps. Easter is not a stationary time in our lives of faith, but it is a time to move ahead, and Jesus is with us. May these Great 50 Days of Easter be a time of spiritual growth for you and those you love. Your servant in Christ, Rev. Jim Hoppert

SCRIP NEWS

We are always talking about ways we can increase the money that goes into our church. We are always looking for ways to get more money. One way is through the SCRIP program. Example: Piggly Wiggly pays 3% (3.00 per every $100 card) Kwik Trip and Fleet Farm pay 5% ($5.00 per every $100.00 card) Everybody eats and most people drive a car. If a family bought a $50 Piggly Wiggly card and a $50 KwikTrip or Fleet Farm card through the SCRIP program, here is how the program works. With the $1.50 from Piggly Wiggly + the $2.50 from KT or FF, that would be $4.00 that the family would be giving extra to the church each week. The $4.00 (from the above scenario) x 50 weeks would be $200.00 a year that the family would be giving extra to the church, without increasing their giving. If 50 people did this, the $200 per family, per year x the 50 families doing this program; the church would receive an additional $10,000. This is all with no increase in what the families are currently giving to the church. Nobody should be walking out the door without a SCRIP card in their hands. Another helpful piece of advice to help out the church with SCRIP: How many people have Kohl’s credit cards? Our cards have “Kohl’s Cares” on it. Those cards can be used to pay off your credit card balance/bill when taken into the store. We keep Kohl’s $25 and $100 in stock.

MISSION & STEWARDSHIP Happy Spring wishes from the Mission & Stewardship Committee! Our group met on March 15 for the first time this year. We have many goals ahead, first of which is to maintain Salem’s Five for Five status. As a reminder, there are five special fund requests made by the UCC during the year. They include: Our Church’s Wider Mission - OCWM - which is ongoing throughout the year. One Great Hour of Sharing - Mid-March Strengthen The Church - Pentecost (May 15) Neighbors in Need - early October Christmas Fund - Last Sunday in Advent We were a bit behind in providing notice to the congregation, and so we will be extending our One Great Hour of Sharing through April. During our annual meeting, we set goals for these benevolences. Below is a summary of those goals and where we are at: Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM):

Goal - $15,000.00 Presently - $3,082.00 One Great Hour of Sharing:

Goal - $700 Presently - $480.00 Strengthen the Church: Goal - $350.00 Neighbors In Need: Goal - $900.00 Christmas Fund: Goal - $700.00 Along with these efforts, we moved SCIO (Sheboygan County Interfaith Organization) from our annual budget to our benevolences. We would like to contribute $1,000 this year, an amount that is equal to past support. We are also asking SCIO to come and make a presentation to our congregation, in the hopes

that we can renew our participation with this worthwhile organization. There are other initiatives that we will be sharing with you in upcoming months, through the Chapel Chimes and from the pulpit. We have all been greatly blessed - and I hope that each of you will join us in working to share our blessings with the wider community. Yours in Christ, Mary Mullen - Chair Mission & Stewardship Committee

GARDENING GOD’S WAY Plant three rows of peas: Peace of mind, peace of heart, peace of soul. Plant four rows of squash: Squash gossip, squash indifference, squash grumbling, squash selfishness. Plant four rows of lettuce: Lettuce be faithful, lettuce be kind, lettuce be obedient, lettuce really love one another. No garden should be without turnips: Turnip for meetings, turnip for service, turnip to help one another. Water freely with patience and cultivate with love. There is much fruit for your garden because you reap what you sow. To conclude our garden we must have thyme: Thyme for God, thyme for study, thyme for prayer, thyme for each other, thyme for friends.
