In 1951 McKerrow Mining Syndicate held a large block of

mining locations in the northwestern part of Baldwin township.

The property is easily reached by motor road from McKerrow on

highway No* 17. Development work has been limited largely to

surface trenching, test-pitting, and sampling. This work was

done by Mr. Fred Springer and sons who live on lot 8, concession

V. A small amount of diamond-drilling has been done but the

records are not available, A large number of veins and sulphide

zones have been found by surface work; these are shown on Fig. .

Values in copper, nickel, and gold have been reported. The north

half of lot 11, concession IV, was optioned by Erie-Canadian Mines,

Ltd., in 1937. Work was confined to the sampling of a large

mineralized quartz vein.

The main showings on the Springer farm and westward lie

either in basic volcanics or intrusives (gabbro, diorite, and

diabase), North of the farm buildings there are several pits

showing disseminated sulphides in sheared lava and diorite near

the northern margin of a large sill. Several grab samples of

the sulphides from these pits were taken by the writer. These

were analyzed for nickel, copper, and gold; also complete

spectrographic analyses were made of several samples. Nothing

of economic interest was indicated by these analyses.

Along the old road that extends west from the farm buildings

thera are several pits on rusty silicified zones and veins

containing chalcopyrite. Heavy chalcopyrite mineralization is

found in one pit on lot 9* concession V. The quartz-chalcopyrite

vein,is exposed over a width of 3 feet but cannot be traced

along the strike on surface. In addition to copper, trace s

of gold and a small amount of zinc are indicated by assays of

grab samples.

Two other quartz veins, about a quarter and a half mile

west of the above in lot 10, are traced on surface for a few

hundred feet and contain spotty chalcopyrite, but grab samples

of vein material taken by the writer contained no gold when

assayed*

A strong quartz-chalcopyrite vein, striking about N. 70O E.,

is exposed by test-pits for a length of 850 feet in the north

half of lot 11, concession IV. This is a composite vein that

follows a sheared zone in gabbro and is up to 15 feet in width.

At the east end it splits into two branches. The vein is well

mineralized in places with chalcopyrite. Systematic channel

sampling of this vein was done by Erie-Canadian Mines in 1937.

Every second channel sample was assayed for copper as well as

gold. All the gold assays were very low, most of them showing

only traces of the metal. The best copper assay averaged 3.3

per cent across 6 feet. Most of the samples contained anywhere

from a half to two per cent copper across widths ranging from

4 to 10 feet. Two character samples, heavily mineralized with

chalcopyrite, were taken by the writer from near the split in

the vein. In addition to the copper (9.92 per cent and 13.2

per cent) thesqcontained small amounts of nickel (0.06 per cent)i

cobalt (0.29 per cent) and gold (0.01 and 0.09 ounces per ton)

when analyzed*

A "giant" quartz vein lies to the south of the above-

mentioned vein on the south half of lot 11, concession IV.

This attains a width of 100 feet and is well exposed for 1100

feet along the strike. It is largely barren white quartz but

a little disseminated chalcopyrite occurs in spots near the

margin of the main vein. This is locally referred to as the

"flux" vein.

Mr. Fred Springer, UoKerrow P.O., Ontario.

Pear Mr. Springert

I wish to inform you that the samples taken from your claims on August ?th assayed as follows:

Sample No.?- Copper - 0.03 per cent.Ooid - 0.01 ounces per ton. A spectrograph! analysis showed that lead and oolybdemm wore present in snail quan tities (less than l por cent*)* and that only traces of other ate tale were in the sample.

J k). 1O- copper - 0*03 por cent. Gold - TraceSpeotrographio analysis snoloeed nothing of con&erolal interest.

It

No.11- Copper - 0.10 per oent. Ooid - TraceSpeotrographio analysis enclosed. It shows nothing of oounerolal interest.

No. 12- Copper - 1^.99 per cent.Ooid -0.01 ounces per ton. Speotrographio analysis enclosed. Mote lino content. A ftlno analysis is now being uadt on this sample to determine axaot content*

Sample No.14* Copper - 5.57 per cent.Ooid -0.01 ounces per ton. Spectrograph!o analysis enclosed.

Sample No.15- Copper -1.40 per cent. Ooid - Trace Spootrographic analysis enclosed

The location and character of these samples are as follows:

No.? - Selected sample of best mineralization from showing SCO feet south oast of No.l .post. Claim S-'35766, Baldwin township.

No.10- Selected sample of best mineralization fromdifferent trenches and pits just east of sample 110.9.

No.11- Selected sample of beat ulnoralization in trenches just east of No.10 and near boundary between lots 7 and 8, concession V.

No.12- Selected canple of the beat cdnorolization in vein in claim S-20022, concession V, lot 9.

No. Selected sample of boot lalnoralization at junction of veins (.sylvanite option) on claim S-35527.

No .14- Selected sample of bost loin oral iza t ion from largo quarts vein on claim s-35^27. AYerage copper content of this vein would be very low.

No. i^- Sample chipped across 6 foot in the first trench going east from 250 feet south of 4 post of S~48?00 (MaoLecoi claims). Con. IV, lo t 5, Baldwin township*

I have recommended a detailed geological survey of Baldwin township for the coning year. If this is done we will be back to see you again and make an accurate map of your showings.

Yours very truly,

Mr. J* E. Thomson, Asat* Provincial Geologist, Department of Mines, Parliament Buildings, TORONTO 2, Ontario.

Dear Sir: RE; Springer Property

UT. Gray has handed to me your letter asking about results on this property.

I enclose two prints, one a location map and the other an assay plan. On the latter you will find the copper assays shown on the south side of showing. You will note that the assays are given for alternate trenches only. These are all that were run.

you require.I hope thin will give you the information
