PILATES IS COMING BACK

We are adding Pilates to our March calendar. Our first

class will be March 1st at 6:45 p.m. Pilates is a low impact

form of exercise that focuses on improving flexibility,

strength, and body awareness, without necessarily building

bulk.

Two key elements of Pilates are core muscle strength and

spinal alignment. It is a resistance exercise, not aerobic.

Don’t be fooled though, you will still sweat!

Pilates is a great addition to add to any exercise regimen as it will help your body become

stronger, more toned and sleek with more energy!

Instructor, Chrissy (Murr) Decker, returned to Salem after over a decade of living away. While

living in Columbia, MO, she was involved in competitive Roller Derby for 7 years. She served

in many roles for the league. She was a competitor, trainer, coach and motivator. During her

competitive years, she realized she needed to cross-train her body for better balance and

muscle structure. She set out on a mission to find a low-impact workout to strengthen her

body. It was then that she discovered her love for Pilates.

Chrissy is now retired from the sport of Roller Derby

and obtained her certificate as Group Exercise Instructor.

She looks forward to once again having “group training

sessions” each week. She loves helping people reach

their physical goals, surpass their perceived physical

limitations and create a good body image. Chrissy says,

“Working out is not about how you look in the mirror

or what your scale says, it’s about how you feel. “ She is

excited to begin teaching Pilates and hopes to add more

future classes. Join Chrissy for her first class! All classes

are included in you membership prices.

Being Healthy Reduces More Than Just Weight

Kim Shelton, Community Wellness Coordinator

Many times people go on a diet or start a workout regimen to try and lose weight, to see a change in

the number on the scale. What people don’t realize is that living a healthy lifestyle can do a lot more

than reduce one’s weight. It can also reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It is important to

remember that health is not only physical. It is very much mental as well. The two very much go

hand in hand.

There are actually foods that you can eat that are proven to reduce anxiety. These foods

include fresh fruits, vegetables, tryptophan rich foods (oats, soy, sesame seeds, etc.), magnesium rich

foods, and omega-3 fatty acids. As you can see these foods are also foods that are already

recommended as part of a healthy diet. Likewise, the foods you should avoid in order to decrease

anxiety are also foods you should avoid as part of a healthy diet like fried foods, alcohol, and refined

sugars. It is no coincidence that these foods coincide with basic nutrition recommendations. It is

because the things that help us physically also help us mentally.

Along with the way these foods affect us, there is a more obvious link to our self-esteems and

our mental health. It may seem obvious, but the healthier a person is, the more confident they are,

and in turn they typically experience stress, anxiety, and depression at a lower rate. Exercise also

releases endorphins, which create a sense of euphoria.

So what does all of this mean? Basically it breaks down to mean that generally speaking,

healthy people are happier people. There is a quote that goes, “Food is the most abused anxiety drug

and exercise is the most underutilized anti-depressant.” This is so true. More often than not we are

using food to fuel our mental health problems instead of treat them. The same goes for exercise.

When we are feeling depressed we tend to be sedentary. In reality the lack of activity only makes it

worse, not better. Getting up and exercising will naturally make you feel better.

Though the New Year is long gone, I challenge you to challenge yourself. Make it a goal to eat

better and exercise at least 3 times a week. When we are physically healthier, we are mentally

healthier. When we are mentally healthier we are better moms, dads, husbands, wives, etc. We all

have busy schedules, but an hour long workout is only 1/24 of our day. We owe it to ourselves and

our loved ones to be the best we can be. Only I have control over the things that I feed myself and

the activity I get in my day and only you have control over those things for yourself. No more

excuses, only action.
