JULY 2018 Monthly Newsletter of Salem UMC, Morganton, NC Salem Scoop 1206 Salem Road / Morganton, NC 28655 / www.sumcm.org / 828-433-6600 Summer Faith & Film Series: Collateral Beauty Movies have a way of captivating our imaginations and stirring some of the deepest emotions within us. The great ones can transport us to galaxies far, far away and peel away layers in a way which speaks to the core of our humanity. During July, we will journey through a faith and film series inspired from the 2017 film, Collateral Beauty. I hope this will be a fun way to explore some of the deeper themes of life and scripture thru the visual art of filmmaking. July 8 – Death July 15 – Time July 22 – Love July 29 – Collateral Beauty Collateral Beauty is a unique gem and timely parable which went largely under the radar after its release. It follows the story of a successful advertising executive who withdraws after the tragic loss of his daughter. His partners try desperately to reconnect with him while he seeks an- swers by writing letters to Love, Time and Death. When his letters are unexpectedly answered by personal responses, he begins to discover how to live again. In preparation, and to enhance the experience of the series, two opportunities are being offered to view the 96 minute film together in the fellowship hall (July 1 OR July 6 – 6pm). Snacks will be provided. (Please note: Collateral Beauty is rated PG-13 for some language during emotionally charged moments. This is not a childrens movie because it would be difficult to understand and follow the deeper themes). I would recommend it for anyone 12 years and up. That being said, we hope youth and adults will join us on July 1 or 6 th for a community viewing. 8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it... 9 Now I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance; for you felt a godly grief, so that you were not harmed in any way by us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death. (2 Cor 7:8-10) July 12-15 – Lake Junaluska A national conference for adults and youth for spirit-filled living is coming to LJA July 12-15. The purpose is to provide learning experiences where people of all ages may encounter God and be equipped to live consistently in the power of the Holy Spirit. CHURCH-WIDE INFO Meeting - July 17, 6:30pm An Update on the UMC and the “Commission on a Way Forward”

Some of you may be aware that this year celebrates 50 years of the United Methodist Church when Meth-odists officially united with the Evangelical United Bretheren to form the UMC. You may also have heard rumblings for several years about issues of human sexuality which threaten a split or schism. In 2016, the Global UMC created a commission to study a path forward regarding issues of human sexuality and that commission has now issued their official report. It’s become clear to me that, as a UM congregation, it will be vitally important for each of us to be better informed about the work of the commission and how it affects us all. I look forward to sharing with you July 17 and beginning a healthy dialogue about issues that are very divisive. This is not a debate but a healthy open opportunity for us all to be informed.

2018 WNC Annual Conference Wrap-up Channeling the Apostle Paul in his closing message to the WNC Conference on Sun-day, Bishop Paul Leeland proclaimed “This is why we toil, why we labor,… we toil to make the word of God fully known that we might present everyone mature unto Christ…. Today we remind ourselves how important it is to tell the story, we want to tell the story as well as we can. Even when the Jesus story is told poorly, people still get the point.” Sundays closing worship capped off an Annual Conference themed: “Teaching plants the seeds for the future.” Over the course of three days, WNCC delegates shared in worship and holy conferencing, ordained and commissioned new candidates for minis-try, approved a $16 million dollar budget for 2019, received special offerings for Lake

Junaluska & Bennett College, celebrated reports from various ministries and agencies, and officially fixed clergy appointments for the 2018-19 year. Bishop Ken Carter also shared a thoughtful report from the “Commission on a Way Forward” which highlighted the history, work, and thought process regarding how to address issues of human sexuality.

Among the petitions passed: a resolution encouraging conference-wide support in NETworX poverty initiative projects, a reversal of fund allocation from the sale of UM properties where 25% of the sale remains in the district and 75% of funds are now available for Conference ministries, support for a just policy for church lay employees aligned with the Book of Discipline where persons are employed or dismissed without regard for sexual orientation or gender, and WNCC officially called for the U.S. to reu-nite children and families separated at the border in a humane and compassionate man-ner. Additionally, one thousand dollars was raised for hurricane relief work in Puerto Rico and 168 people responded to start a fresh expression of ministry in their local setting. Lara Autrey and Gracie Call represented SUMC well. The 2019 WNC Annual Confer-ence will be held June 20-23 at Lake Junaluska.
