May 22, 1934 in Hopkinsville, the daughter of the late Patrick and Josephine McShane. She attended Saints Peter and Paul School in the first year of its existence. She graduated high school at Mount St. Joseph and college at Siena Col-lege in Memphis, TN. Also preced-ing her in death were her sister Patricia McShane Kranz and her husband, US Navy Captain Robert Schade. Cele’s burial will be beside her husband at the U.S. Naval Acade-my at a later date. Survivors include her sister, Rosemary Kranz of Hastings, Minnesota, her three daughters, JoAnne, Terrie and Susan, 6 grandchildren and many relatives and friends in the Hopkinsville area.

As a parish we offer our prayers to these families as we pray “May their souls and the souls of all the faithful de-parted through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.”

Parish Religious Education Programs for Saints Peter and Paul Parish – 2019-2020.

The Religious Education program at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church exists to provide sacramental prepa-ration for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirma-tion as well as ongoing faith formation for children who have received these sacraments. It strives to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ in the context of the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The program presents the four fundamental themes of the Catechism of the Catholic Church – Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer – in such a way that the children of our parish begin to understand how to live the Gospel.

PSR (Pre-School thru 5th Grade): Classes are held weekly on Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. in the Saints Pe-ter and Paul Primary Center (old school building). It is ex-pected that parents will attend special Sacramental Prepara-tion Parent meetings offered by the parish and families will join us for worship at either the 8:00am Mass before class or the 10:30am Mass following class. July 14 – 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Today’s Gospel turns our attention to the Parable of the Good Samaritan. It is about living how God intended us to live: to acknowledge God’s divine love and compassion lavished upon us, and to extend that love and compassion upon others without reser-vation. We can find a lot of reasons for not stopping to help someone. Strangers are not our responsibility, or are they? Good stewards understand that God’s mercy is a gift that must be shared, and that doing the right thing, acting as Jesus would act toward others, is the only course of action.

Trivia Night 11: It’s Back! We have an upcoming Adults Only (21 and over) Night called “Battle of the Brains Trivia

Credo ut intelligam. This motto of Catholic theology and piety reaches at least back to the 11th century. Its insight is, in fact, at work in the text of the Gospel according to John. In English it goes, “I believe so that I might under-stand.” Little did I anticipate or even un-derstand how important it was to be in my

life as a Christian or in my ministry as a priest. There is a certain psychology and philosophy which can appreciate how this operates in ordinary human knowing. But it is in Christian faith and theology that the axiom has its greatest significance. As a human being we are designed and creat-ed by God to know God’s existence and with grace to em-brace divine revelation and enter through conversion into an ever deeper relationship with God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In Christ we are also and at the same time led by the same means and motives into an ever greater and more compassionate embrace of our fellow human beings. Ap-proaching God and humanity ever more closely and person-ally is not led by information and intelligence. It does not progress because I have figured out the problems and solved the puzzles. Rather, by faith in what God reveals I am given light which illuminates the truth and purposes of my existence and of the world around me. So much makes sense in light of the Mystery of faith which otherwise lacks meaning. I can say without reservation that my progress in theological studies did not begin until I approached our Church’s doctrine and tradition of faith and practice not as historical or intellectual puzzles to be solved but by my sur-render of faith to the One, True God whom the Church serves. My assent of faith is to God and to the Church’s magisterium (ministerial teaching authority) because it exists as a ministry to God’s revelation in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. As a consequence, I can admit without hesitation or intimidation that my own intelligence and ego are not the highest personal authority in my life. My personal integrity rests by surrender without qualms to the authority of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I find in this true, human freedom, autonomy, creativity, purpose and the ad-venture of my existence. I believe so that I might under-stand. In late 1976 or early 1977 I realized that I could believe what I did not yet understand. This prepared me to be ordained as a deacon in June, 1977. Not only was this necessary before I could promise to live as a celibate wit-ness to the Gospel for the rest of my life, but I also had to promise or resolve “to hold fast to the mystery of faith with a clear conscience, as the Apostle urges, and to proclaim this faith in word and deed according to the Gospel and the Church’s tradition.” In my home parish of St. Joseph Church, Leitchfield, KY, I did so promise and was thus ordained a deacon of the Catholic Church. These and my other promis-es and resolutions as deacon and priest have shaped the rest of my life in radical ways. They consciously and fruit-fully shape each day of my life. As to faith, I cannot imag-ine how I could live and serve as a Catholic priest if holding fast to the mystery of faith with a clear conscience did not anchor and guide both personal life and pastoral ministry. My own inclinations of mind and will are restrained by this resolution from domination and imposition over others. As an obedience to God and to the Church for God’s sake it is a source of humility and meekness. All this makes it possible

for me to profess the Nicene Creed and to profess the oath expected of a pastor of God’s flock. You know, of course, the Nicene Creed. Here is the oath which I professed as a pastor in service of our church.

With firm faith I also believe everything con-tained in God’s Word, written or handed down in tradition and proposed by the Church, whether in solemn judgment or in ordinary and universal magisterium, as divinely revealed and calling for

faith. ✤ I also firmly accept and hold each and every thing that is proposed by the Church defini-

tively regarding teaching on faith and morals. ✤ Moreover, I adhere with religious submission of will and intellect to the teachings which either the Roman Pontiff or the college of bishops enunciate when they exercise the authentic magisterium even if they proclaim those teachings in an act that is not definitive.

It is not so different from the profession made by those who enter the Catholic Church after having been baptized in another Christian communion: “I believe and profess all that the Holy Catholic Church believes, teaches, and proclaims to be revealed by God.” A distinct fruit of being guided by faith is the dis-covery that faith also precedes hope and love. I believe so that I may truly hope. I believe so that I may truly love. “Faith is that which stands beneath our hope, the evidence of things unseen.” “Love then consists in this, not that we have loved God but that God has loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.” As faith goes, so go under-standing, hope, and love.
