“the scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect: to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good.” Later at our Thursday sessions, we will hand over the Creed to our elect, which they will proclaim at the Easter vigil when they profess their baptismal promises.

2019 Friday Lenten Preaching Mission at Grace Episcopal Church

located at 216 East 6th Street at 12:00 – Noon.

March 20: Rev. Mitchell Fort will be speaking from Virginia Street Baptist Church

March 27: Marcella B. Henderson, LCSW, Hopkinsville will be the speaker

April 3: Fr. Robert Clark, Grace Episcopal Church will be the speaker

All Services begin at noon and a luncheon follows in the par-ish hall. Luncheons are $8.00 and all proceeds benefit chari-table organizations in our community. Please know that no lunch will be served on Good Friday.

Chrism Mass: The Chrism Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th at 6:30 p.m. at the Sportscenter in Owensboro. Please keep this date open and consider going with us as a parish to attend this beautiful celebration. We would like to use our parish bus (first 14 people to sign-up) and carpool together. We will depart from Saints Peter and Paul at 4:00 p.m., attend the Mass, stop for dinner at Moonlite Bar-B-Que and then head home. If you would like to go, see Libby to signup.

St. Meinrad Archabbey and Seminary and School of The-ology: For many years, the Diocese of Owensboro has

benefited from the ministry of those formed at Saint Meinrad Archabbey, Seminary and School of Theology. This weekend, our parish will learn more about their important work from Fr. Tobias, OSB,

vice rector of Saint Meinrad. In all, more than 1,500 active and retired priests, 600

permanent deacons, and 4,500 lay ministers attended Saint Meinrad. In addition, countless high school students were formed in faith and prepared for liturgical ministry through Saint Meinrad’s “One Bread, One Cup” program.

After this weekend, Archabbot Kurt Stasiak, OSB, will send a letter asking for your financial support to continue their efforts. Please consider partnering in their work. As always, please continue to pray more vocations to the priesthood, permanent diaconate, vowed religious life, and lay ministry. To learn more about saint Meinrad and to sub-mit prayer requests, text “prayer” to 800-682-0988 or visit www.saintmeinrad.edu/prayer.

Scrutinies: In every community that will baptize adults or older children at the Easter Vigil, special rites known as the “scrutinies” are celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. And because the entire community will renew its baptismal promises at Easter, we too examine our lives in light of God’s word, as do the candidates for full union with the Church who will receive Confirmation and the Eucharist along with the catechumens.

In the scrutinies we remember all that the Lord has done for us. We pray for a change of heart, that God will have a greater place in our hearts. These last weeks of Lent call each of us to enter into a more intense preparation for the celebration of the Easter mysteries. By means of the three scrutinies, first of all, the elect are instructed gradually about the mystery of sin, from which the whole world and every person longs to be delivered and thus saved from its present and future consequences. Second, their spirit is filled with Christ the Redeemer, who is the living water, . . . the light of the world, . . . and the resurrection and the life. . . . From the first to the final scrutiny the elect should progress in their perception of sin and their desire for salvation.

So continue to pray for the elect as they continue their journey to the Easter waters and sacraments. These include our Candidates (baptized): Stephanie Estes, Yancy “Bubba” Rutland, and Hazel Petrovich.

Prayers of the Faithful: You will notice at Mass a slight change in the Prayers of the Faithful beginning this week-end. The response is “Lord Have Mercy.” This Sunday, and for the next two Sundays, as a faith community we will cele-brate the Rite of Scrutiny. According to the Church’s rites,

Area Communal Lenten Penance Services For your convenience we are providing you

Season of Reconciliation ~ Fruits of the Spirit The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.” Galatians 5:16-26 (This is an Examination of Conscience)

1. Love - Do I love God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength above all else? Do I give to God what belongs to God? Do my actions show it? Am I caring toward my family, my friends, and people I don’t know? Do I sacrifice for the good of others?

2. Joy - Am I joyful and content with what I have and with the gifts the Lord has given me? Have I envied another per-son or their possessions or lifestyle? Do I trust that God loves me, calls me by name and will always provide for my mate-rial and spiritual needs? Do I joyfully submit to God’s will?

3. Peace - Is there someone I need to forgive and have not? Is my temper a problem? Do I hold onto grudges, anger or resentment? Have I ever told myself that I not am an awe-some beloved child of God? Have I been seeking peace with God, with others and my conscience?

4. Patience - Do I really honor my parents? Do I try to listen to what they ask of me and be patient with them? Do I lash out when I am frustrated? Am I tolerant of other people even if they disagree with me?

5. Kindness - Do I look to the needs of others and strive to treat every person as if they were Jesus Himself? Am I kind to myself, or am I too hard on myself? Do I give in to depression or self-pity? Have I always sought the supreme good of others? Am I kind in thought, word, and actions? Have I willfully turned away from opportunities to be kind?

6. Generosity - Am I generous with what I have? Have I sto-len anything? Do I put too much trust or emphasis in material possessions? Have I given my time, talent and money to God and the poor? Do I serve God not counting the cost? Do I tithe and help the poor from my first or the best? Do I give of myself without being asked?

7. Faithfulness - Am I truthful and understanding? Do I seek to tell the truth even when I may be embarrassed when I do? Am I faithful to my commitment to God, His church, my fami-ly? Am I loyal to my friends? Am I constant in my Christian calling to be a disciple of Christ? Am I committed sincerely in my Christian values? Are my priorities right?

8. Gentleness - Do I always need to be in control? Does my need for power, recognition, or prestige take precedence over the need for God in my life? Do I force my will on oth-ers? Am I gentle with my eyes, mouth and hands especially when I am angry?

9. Self-Control - Do I have a humble spirit of penance and self-denial as taught by Jesus? Do I guard my senses? Have I given into carnal pleasures, vanity, greed or lust? Have I been immodest in anyway? Have I resorted to slander, gos-sip or detraction?

Easter Flowers: Did you know the flowers in the church throughout the Liturgical Year are totally dependent upon your generous donations through the Easter and Christmas Flower fund en-velopes included in your envelope packet? The seven weeks of Easter through Pentecost (April 12th – May 31st) provides us with another oppor-tunity to donate toward the beauty of the season “in memory of” or “in honor of” a loved one. Please print the names clearly on your “Easter Flower” envelope and drop it in the collection basket. Thank you so much for the differ-ence YOU make in the beauty of our worship space throughout the church year.

Fatima Tour of Peace: The historic, world-famous Interna-tional pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be

visiting Saints Peter and Paul Parish on Monday, March 23rd from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as part of the Fatima Tour for Peace, sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA (a Public Association of the Faithful under the Vatican). Please join us for an extraordinary day of graces, heal-ing and prayer to Our Lady, for our coun-try and our families. Prior to being here at Saints Peter and Paul, this statue will be at

the Fathers of Mercy in Auburn on Sunday and at St. John Parish in Paducah on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please know this statue will be placed on the altar near the 9th Street window. Prayer booklets will be available for your use. Come throughout the day and pray with Our Lady of Fatima. Hundreds of favors and graces, including cures, and countless conversions are associated with the image. The presence of this special Statue (sculpted according to the description of Sister Lucia, the Fatima seer) is a great gift tour community. Do you know the story of Fatima?

Thank You Card Received: We wanted to share a “Thank You” card we received and it reads as fol-lows: To my Wonderful Church Family: I cannot thank you enough for the prayers, food and all the support you have given me at this very, very sad time of my life. Dave recon-nected with his faith at Saints Peter and Paul and Father Mere-dith. The healing of the sick helped Dave continue on in his journey. Thank you Sharon Smith

Solemnity of St. Joseph: Come join us for Mass THIS Thurs-day, March 19th at 8:00 a.m. as we celebrate the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary. Our school children will join us for this great celebration, so come check out our “St. Joseph table” and all the goodies you will find there. This feast is among 14 “solemnities” marked for spe-cial care in the Catholic Church. Why not take some time to read and reflect upon the life of St. Joseph. Did you know that St. Joseph has been honored on this date since the end of the 10th century, that he was declared Pa-tron of the Universal Church in 1870 by Pope Pius IX, that he is the patron saint of workers, carpenters and of fathers. Let us all pray that St. Joseph will touch all fathers and help them truly be “men of faith”. A reception will follow the 8:00 a.m. Mass in the narthex. If you would like to assist with this reception by bringing some treats for the St. Jo-seph’s table, please let Libby know. MARCH 15, 2020 • THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT 7

Pastor’s Greetings, THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT “BLESSED ARE THEY WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR THEY WILL BE SATISFIED.” [Matthew 5.6] “GIVE ME A DRINK.” [John 4.7] “I HAVE

FOOD TO EAT OF WHICH YOU DO NOT KNOW.” [John 4.32] “I THIRST.” [John 19.28]

In every chapel of the Missionaries of Charity, Saint Teresa of Calcutta required that Jesus’ words from the cross, “I thirst,” be printed on the wall near the Crucifix. She her-self wanted to slake the thirst of Jesus, his thirst for the sal-vation of every human being. Fasting, the Lord Jesus be-came hunger for us and defeated our Enemy, who tempted us to feed on what destroys us. The Lord who said: “Whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of wa-ter welling up to eternal life” [John 4.14], became our thirst as he died for us by crucifixion. This makes his final gift complete as water and blood flowed from his opened side by the soldier’s lance after he had died. As the Resurrection he breathed out the Holy Spirit and impelled the Church to carry the flood of Baptism in water and in Spirit and the food and drink of himself in Eucharist to sate the hunger and to slake the thirst of humanity for God in love and mercy. The First Scrutiny (third Sunday of Lent) confronts the Church and those who are preparing for the Easter Sacra-ments to examine our hearts regarding all the sins by which we seek to quench our thirsts and to satisfy our hungers not trusting in God but following our own devices. Our natural appetites and desires suffer distortions and disorders due to original sin. And we have many desires disguised as needs which are not natural at all but derive from the effects of Original Sin. Some of these are gravely disordered and intrinsically evil. Jesus teaches us to seek God’s kingdom and God’s way first, not our own. “Whoever would be a disciple of mine must deny himself, take up his cross each day, and follow me.” In-stead we make exceptions and exemptions for ourselves to our detriment and to the harm of others. Jesus teaches that the Father knows our needs (even before we ask) and seeks to meet them for us, but we must seek him first not ourselves. From Eden until now, our Enemy would trick us and seduce us to satisfy ourselves with what he offers and God forbids. His lie is that we cannot trust God and are better off taking things into our own hands. The prayers of the First Scrutiny go as follows:

On this Third Sunday of Lent, the Church examines its thirst for Christ's Living Water. We often have sought to satisfy our desires contrary to the Gospel rather than turning to Jesus Christ, our true heart's desire. We pray for the Elect as their baptism ap-proaches, for the candidates who will soon be with us at the Lord's table, for our children and youth whom we invite to first Eucharist and Confirmation, and for ourselves that we may be true to Christ in love and to the community of the Faithful in him. As we acknowledge our sinfulness and pray for the

living water which God gives us in Jesus Christ, we kneel and ask the Lord's mercy. (The petitions are offered here. Then the Presider prays for those pre-paring for the Easter Sacraments.) All merciful Father, through your Son you revealed your mercy to the woman of Samaria; and, moved by that same care you have offered salvation to all sinners. Look favorably upon the Elect of the Church who desire to become your adopted chil-dren through the power of your sacraments. Set them free from all that keeps them from Christ. Keep your Church and all who seek to join us in the Easter sacraments free from the slavery of sin. Deliver us from Satan's crushing yoke, break every chain that enslaves us, and renew upon us the gen-tle yoke of Jesus. Protect us in every danger so that we may serve you faithfully in peace and joy and render you thanks for ever. AMEN. Lord Jesus, in your merciful wisdom you touched the heart of the sinful woman and taught her to wor-ship the Father in spirit and in truth. Now by your power, free the elect of the Church from the cun-ning of Satan, as they draw near to the fountain of living water. Touch their hearts and the hearts of all who prepare for the Easter Sacraments with the power of the Holy Spirit so that they with all the Church may come to know the Father more deeply in true Faith, which expresses itself in love, for you live and reign for ever and ever. AMEN.

May Christ deliver us from every seduction of our disor-dered desires. May he quench our thirst and satisfy our hungers in himself. Fr. Richard
