The Characteristics of Parish Stewardship Prayerful - Our parish gathers in prayerful gratitude at the Sunday Liturgy. Throughout the Liturgy we "lift up our hearts to the Lord ... Let us give thanks to the Lord our God ... lt is right to give Him thanks and praise." Μonetary gifts at the time of the collection symbolize our self‑donation. We prayerfully offer ourselves through Jesus to the Father. 
 Planned - We need to decide through careful reflection how much our responsible donation should be. This should be done as part of our family budget. Proportionate - Stewardship requires that "the first fruits" (Lv 23:10) be given to the Lord. This means that the Lord is taken care of first then the other obligations can be satisfied. If there are emergencies, a sudden illness or unemployment, adjust-ments can be made accordingly. Sacrificial - A sacrifice involves giving from our substance rather than from our abundance. Remember Jesus’ observation of the widow's mite (Lk 21. I‑4). It means giving from what we think we need for ourselves. We are changed spiritually when this sacrifice is offered for the sake of Christ. It identifies us with the sacrifice of Jesus and helps us to be “poor in spirit" (Mt 5:3). We thank the 337 stewards who have renewed their pledge for 2014. The 2014 Stewardship cards are available in the narthex, the com-munity hall, the church office, and on www.Saint-Spyridon.org. Please consider making your 2014 Stewardship pledge today or give a

stewardship card to a friend or family member.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Welcome—If you are visiting with us today, we welcome you and hope that you will join us regularly for prayer and fellowship. Food Pantry - We wish to thank all our parishioners and friends of St. Spyridon for remembering our Food Pantry. As you know, our Food Pantry helps our St. Spyridon fami-lies that have a need for assistance. Our Food Pantry also helps the friends of St. Spyridon, on a daily and weekly ba-sis. It is very important that we keep our Food Pantry filled at all times, so that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of food. If you wish to donate food or monetary dona-tion for our Food Pantry and Christmas Baskets, please bring your items/donations to the Church office or the Pan-try Donation Box. Christmas Flowers—If anyone is interested in donating towards the purchase of flowers for the adornment of our Church and Icons for the feast day of St. Spyridon and the Christmas season, please contact the Church office. Christmas Caroling—The GOYAns will be Christmas Car-oling once again this year! We are looking forward to spreading Christmas cheer with our fellow parishioners on Friday, December 19th, 7pm-9pm, and on Saturday, Decem-ber 20th, 12 noon-3pm. If anyone is interested in opening their home or business for this Christmas tradition, they may contact the church office as soon as possible to make reservations. Christmas Pageant— Our Sunday School staff and students will present the Christmas Pageant on Sunday, December 22nd, following the Divine Liturgy. A mandatory rehearsal is set for Saturday, December 21st, at 10 am. Credit cards are now accepted - Through the efforts of our parish council and our dedicated office staff, our commu-nity is now accepting credit cards for all forms of donation, tuition, or other payments. All major credit cards are wel-come and a 3% processing fee will be added to your dona-tion or payment.

New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance - The community of Saint Spyridon invites all the faithful to the New Year’s Eve cele-bration on Wednesday, December 31st at 9:00 p.m. Come and enjoy the delicious food, the live Greek band, cham-pagne and all the festivities to welcome the New Year 2015.

The donation is $50 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Your reservation and donation must be submitted by Sun-day, December 28th. After the 28th, tickets are $60 for adults and $15 for children.

Altar Boy Day— On Saturday, December 27th, we will cele-brate ‘Altar Boy Day’ in honor of St. Stephen. All the altar boys are asked to attend the Divine Liturgy which will be followed by food and fellowship, and most importantly our annual altar boy photo. Please plan to attend.

Parish Council Elections - The elections for the Parish Council will take place today following the Divine Liturgy. Please come and cast your vote in the community hall.

St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians 3:4-11

BRETHREN, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new na-ture, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all.

The Gospel of Luke 14:16-24

The Lord said this parable: "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and there is still room.' And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΑΤΙΚΟ ΡΕΒΕΓΙΟΝ – 2015 -Προσκαλούμε όλους τους φίλους και ενορίτες του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα να γιορτάσουμε τον ερχομό του Νέου Έτους όλοι μαζί σαν μία οικογένεια. Φαγητό, μουσική και χορός για να γιορτάσουμε το Νέο Έτος την Τετάρτη, 31 Δεκεμβρίου, στις 9:00 μ.μ. Εισητήριο είναι $50 και $15 για τα παιδιά κάτω των 12 ετών. Για την καλύτερη εξυπηρέτηση όλων, οι κλείσεις θέσεων πρέπει να συνοδεύονται και από την πληρωμή των εισητηρίων πριν την Κυριακή 28 Δεκεμβρίου. Μετά την 28η, το εισητήριο θα είναι $60. Για κρατήσεις θέσεων σας παρακαλούμε να απευθυνθείτε στο γραφείο της ενορίας μας.

Πρὸς Κολοσσαεῖς 3:4-11

Ἀδελφοί, ὅταν ὁ Χριστὸς φανερωθῇ, ἡ ζωὴ ἡμῶν, τότε καὶ ὑμεῖς σὺν αὐτῷ φανερωθήσεσθε ἐν δόξῃ. Νεκρώσατε οὖν τὰ μέλη ὑμῶν τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, πορνείαν, ἀκαθαρσίαν, πάθος, ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν, καὶ τὴν πλεονεξίαν, ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρεία, διʼ ἃ ἔρχεται ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας· Ἐν οἷς καὶ ὑμεῖς περιεπατήσατέ ποτε, ὅτε ἐζῆτε ἐν αὐτοῖς. ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT The final phase is our iconography project is under way and soon the iconography of our beau-tiful edifice will be completed. Only five icons remain available for dοnation. 1. Saturday of Lazarus 2. Last Supper 3. Miracle of St. Spyridon 4. Flight to Egypt 6. Adoration of the Magi The cost of each icon is $15,000 but all donations are welcome and all donors will be recognized if requested. All of these icons have already received partial donations but we are looking to have them fully pledged by the time they are installed in August 2015. For more information

Το κόστος για κάθε εικόνα είναι $15,000, αλλά όλες οι δωρεές, οποιοδήποτε ποσών, είναι ευπρόσδεκτες για την ολοκλήρωση του εικονογραφικού έργου της Εκκλησίας. Ο Άγιος Ελευθέριος Ο Άγιος Ελευθέριος γεννήθηκε στην Ελλάδα και έζησε τον 2o αιώνα μ. Χ. Τότε αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Κόμμοδος και ο Σεπτίνος Σεβήρος. Ορφανός από πατέρα, ανατράφηκε σύμφωνα με τις επιταγές του Ευαγγελίου από την ευσεβέστατη και φιλάνθρωπη μητέρα του, Ανθία. Διακαής πόθος της Ανθίας ήταν να επισκεφτεί τη Ρώμη, που τα χώματά της είχαν βαφτεί με το αίμα των Αποστόλων Πέτρου και Παύλου. Κάποτε, λοιπόν, αποφάσισε και πήγε. Μαζί

πήρε και το νεαρό γιό της Ελευθέριο. Ο επίσκοπος Ρώμης, όταν είδε τον Ελευθέριο εκτιμώντας την πολλή νοημοσύνη του, τη θερμή πίστη και το αγνό ήθος του, τον έλαβε υπό την προστασία του. Μετά από λίγα χρόνια τον χειροτόνησε διάκονο και έπειτα ιερέα. Από τη θέση αυτή ο Ελευθέριος αγωνίστηκε με ζήλο για τη διδαχή του ποιμνίου του, και σε έργα φιλανθρωπίας. Γι’ αυτό και το έτος 182 μ. Χ., με κοινή ψήφο κλήρου και λαού, ανήλθε στον επισκοπικό θρόνο της Ρώμης. Η φήμη της αρετής του έφτασε μέχρι τη Βρεττανία. Έτσι, ο βασιλιάς αυτής Λούκιος έγραψε επιστολή στον Ελευθέριο και του δήλωνε ότι αυτός και ο λαός του επιθυμούσαν να γίνουν χριστιανοί. Ο Ελευθέριος αμέσως ανταποκρίθηκε, στέλνοντας δύο εκπαιδευμένους στην πίστη άνδρες, που κατήχησαν και βάπτισαν χριστιανούς τον Λούκιο με το λαό του. Όταν ο Σεπτίμιος Σεβήρος εξήγειρε διωγμό κατά των χριστιανών, ο Ελευθέριος τον έλεγξε θαρραλέα. Τότε διατάχθηκε ο μαρτυρικός θάνατός του, μαζί με τη μητέρα του Ανθία. Έτσι ο Άγιος Ελευθέριος πέρασε «εις την ελευθερίαν της δόξης των τέκνων του Θεού». Δηλαδή στην ελευθερία της ένδοξης κατάστασης των παιδιών του Θεού.

ANNUAL METROPOLIS OF CHICAGO CHRISTMAS

OPEN HOUSE CELEBRATION

His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos will once again joyously open the Metropolis home at 40 East Burton Place in Chicago, Illinois, to the clergy, faithful, and many friends of the Greek Orthodox Community during the Christmas holiday sea-son. This year, the Metropolis Open House will be held on Sunday, De-cember 14, 2014 beginning at 5:00 p.m.

A bus will be leaving St. Spyridon today at 4:45 p.m. for the Metropo-lis. It will return by 8:45 p.m. You can come along and join our Jr. Choir children will be performing
