In the first week of the school holidays, we got messy when we made sherbet, slime and bubbles in our science workshop, we sang and danced on music video day, got a strike or two at Manhattan Superbowl and baked and decorated cupcakes to finish the week off!

In the second week of vacation care, the children went to see Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D at the cinema, came dressed as monsters on Monster Madness Day, played laser tag around the playground and also brought along a donation to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation on Wheels Day for charity. On Charity day, along with Belmore Vacation Care, we were able to raise $266 for the Foundation. Thank you to all who contributed.

J U N I O R S C H O O L R E P O R T BOARD OF STUDIES JUNIOR SCHOOL INSPECTION Last Thursday the Junior School underwent its Board of Studies inspection. We were delighted to receive the maximum registration period of 5 years. The inspectors were most impressed with all our documentation. They thought our handbooks, that is, Teachers, Parents and Occupational Health and Safety were well thought thorough and well structured with a strong understanding of policy implementation. They stated that we had a very strong curriculum base with a very thorough scope and sequence. There was meticulous attention to detail in presentation, differentiation and integration particularly with ICT and clear assessment opportunities. The variety in teaching and learning activities was refreshing and the ongoing teacher engagement with student work was evident and insightful. Our classrooms were beautifully presented with children’s work displayed representing the work they do in many of the Key Learning Areas. On behalf of the Head of College, Father Steven, the Parish and the Board of Governors, I congratulate all our staff both teaching and office staff for making the inspection so successful with their hard work and dedication. My particular most sincere thanks to Mrs Synesios assisted by Mrs Kipriotis for the endless hours they put in to check the programs and prepare the necessary documentation in such a clear, thorough and organised manner. Our thanks also to our Parish Executive Officer Mrs Tsaconas, who with our maintenance men John and Steve, made sure that all our buildings, grounds and facilities were checked for safety, repair and cleanliness. CRICOS K-12 INSPECTION On Friday the Board of Studies inspectors also returned to the Senior School campus to do a very thorough inspection of our documentation, policies and procedures for our overseas students. The inspection also assesses the courses offered, the delivery methods, assessment details etc.

We are very happy to announce that this inspection also passed with flying colours and everything was found to be in order thanks to the hard work of Mrs Kringas, Mrs Tsaconas and members of the senior school staff. CONGRATULATIONS We congratulate Ms Tsokas and her partner Peter on the birth of their twins a boy Gabriel and a girl Alexia. We wish them all health and happiness. WELCOME We welcome Mrs Joseph who is replacing Mrs Ieroklis in Term 3 while she in on Long Service leave. SPECIALTY PHOTOS Special photos and whole school photo will be taken on Tuesday 30th August. Please ensure that all children are in immaculate full school winter uniform. ANNUAL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Our annual athletics carnival was held on a beautiful sunny day last term. The enthusiasm and excitement of the children was a delight to see as they participated in the many events. Each and every one of them tried their hardest and six new records were set. The parents also joined in the fun of the day especially a particular “Nemean Lion!” Thank you also to all the parents who helped throughout the day, without you we would not be able to run our carnivals so effectively and efficiently. Thank you to Mr Volas for organising the carnival and to all the staff and senior school students who helped with events and supervision. Special thanks to the P&F committee who again did us proud by providing food and drink on the day (particularly the wonderful mum who made the chocolate crackles, my favourite!) and NO Mr Arnott I did not eat them all. We thank Mr Arnott for his informative and entertaining running commentary throughout the day.

Mrs C Bartlett Librarian MINDQUEST 2011 On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September 2011 the fifty sixth NSW Talent Enrichment Weekend MindQuest will be held for primary students from Years 1-6 at St George Girls HS. These include gifted and talented students, gifted underachievers and students with above average ability with a special interest. Students will have an opportunity to participate in over 38 exciting, fast paces courses in the two day program. They include courses in chemistry, earth sciences, drama, lego robotics, art and much, more. Many of these highly successful have been run in the past and students’ evaluations suggest that they have been challenged and enriched by the experience. The cost of the weekend is $160 (including GST). Forms are available from the school office. Closing date is Friday 12 August 2011. COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS The Junior School has registered for the Coles Sports for Schools competition and also the Woolworths Earn and Learn points competition. Please see below for details.

Coles has launched their 2011 Sports for Schools program and we are excited to announce that we will be participating and collecting vouchers for much needed sports equipment.

Vouchers are available in all Coles stores from 11 August to 19 October 2011 and we ask that you get involved to help collect vouchers for our school. Our target is to collect as many vouchers as we can to provide our school with much needed sports equipment. We are appealing to all to collect as many vouchers as you can. By donating and encouraging friends and family to do the same, you are helping to provide a healthy and active education for our children. A collection box will be located at the front of reception so please feel free to drop the vouchers in the box or give them to your children to hand into class. Don’t forget for every $10 spent at Coles, Coles Online, BI-LO, and Pick’n’Pay supermarkets, customers will received 1 voucher just by doing their regular shop.

Our school is taking part in Woolworths Earn & Learn community program. This year, they are giving away more than $5 million worth of educational resources for Primary and Secondary schools all over Australia, including ours! From July 18th to September 18th 2011, Woolworths will give you one Earn & Learn point for every $10 you spend in store (excluding the purchase of cigarettes, alcohol and gift cards). Points will automatically appear on your shopping dockets. All you need to do is save those dockets and bring them to school (Woolies have given us a special collection box). We will be able to track our progress on our points barometer online. At the end of the 9-week program, we can redeem our collection of points against a choice of more than 7,000 educational resources. The list is extensive and includes library books, classroom equipment, art & craft materials and much, much more...

There’s no limit to the number of points we can collect, so your participation will really make a difference. The more points we earn, the more resources we can order! JEANS FOR GENES DAY Friday August 5th, 2011 Dear Parents, On Friday 5th August 2011, St. Spyridon will be participating in Jeans for Genes Day. We will be raising money for genetic research to help our community. Students are asked to donate a gold coin and wear their favourite pair of denim jeans (or a similar style) with their sports top on the day. In addition, on this Friday, students will be asked to sign a special Jeans for Genes Day Memento organised by the Year 6 Prefects. Students can purchase a ticket to win this memento and therefore assist in raising more funds. Please see the Year 6 Prefects for more information about the memento and tickets on the day. S E N I O R S C H O O L R E P O R T ORDINATION On Sunday, 26th June, 2011, Mr Peter Mavrommatis (Orthodox Studies Teacher and Year 10 Adviser) was ordained a Deacon by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos at St Spyridon Church. We pray that Father Peter may always be worthy to serve God and His people. UPPER SCHOOL NEWS Year 12 The trial examination period begins on Monday, 1st August and goes for two weeks. The Trial HSC should be treated as the ‘real’ HSC. It is a very strong indicator of student progress and assists in diagnosing what is required of individuals to improve their results in the HSC. The Trials will give an indication of the strengths and weaknesses in each subject attempted. Act quickly on diagnosing your own results and how to make improvements for the October/November examinations. This is the time to focus on all subjects. Many subjects have a large % for internal assessment in

this examination. Ranks may change due to students who are making more effort than they have before. We wish the students well in their studies. There is still time to impact on the final outcome of the HSC. Year 11 Preliminary Course Examinations are in Week 9. The results of the Yearly Examinations for Preliminary courses will assist when making the choice of study for the 2012 HSC. Students should be thinking very keenly about their course for the HSC year and making sure their subjects are appropriate for their future career or aspirations. Year 10 Students have now submitted their first round of choices for Year 11 2012 subjects, showing preferences. A second round will be given out showing the lines and students will be asked to choose again. If the choices are difficult to make you are advised to encourage your son or daughter to see Mrs Skerman or myself for support on a one-to-one basis. It is not always possible to give everyone their full set of choices and in these cases new decisions will need to be made. PRIMA BALLERINA Many of our students at St Spyridon College have interests outside of school that they excel in. One example is Eleni Mavrolefterou from Year 9. Eleni has been learning classical ballet since she was three years old. She attends Academy Ballet which has recently moved its studios from the French School in Maroubra to Alexandria. She has been studying and completing yearly examinations under the RAD Syllabus (Royal Academy of Dance), which is internally standardised. She also studies Russian character dance, contemporary, jazz ballet, classical repertoire and musical theatre. Last year she was offered a position as a part-time student at Academy Ballet. She has been selected to compete as a soloist in yearly eisteddfods over the past four years and in classical and character groups over the past six years.

Eleni’s studies in dance have offered her enormous opportunities to develop a healthy body and mind, and encourage an enjoyable discipline in the pursuit of excellence. Congratulations Eleni.

Katsogiannis Principal Senior School M I D D L E S C H O O L R E P O R T “Practice doesn’t make Perfect, Perfect Practice makes Perfect” Anonymous If we put lots of time into practicing, and the process used is flawed, or imperfect, then we are not gaining from all that effort. We are in fact making the imperfect practices permanent. The energy and time spent on practicing becomes unproductive, it does not give us the results we want and believe we deserve. Because of this at some point we mistakenly tell ourselves we must not be good enough or smart enough, we have failed, or have no talent, and so we give up. Negative and defeatist mind sets are unproductive. Instead the focus should be on re-examining our practises, and actively looking for ways to do things differently. The second semester offers another opportunity for all students to reflect on their performance and efforts, and set into motion plans for moving forward. Doing the same as before and expecting different result simply doesn’t work.

JUNIOR SCHOOL VISIT In week 8 of Term 2 we had the pleasure of hosting a visit by Year 6 as part of our transition program. Over the past three years these students have come to the Senior School to experience ‘taster’ lessons in all curriculum areas, feel more comfortable with high school routines, and familiarize themselves with the physical environment. Additionally, Year 6 has had opportunity to build relationships with older students who have acted as their guides and mentors during visits. A very enjoyable day was shared by all who participated.

TERM 2 MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY Congratulations to all Maple Award and Perfect Attendance recipients, Movie Draw ticket winners, and those whose positive efforts distinguished them resulting in being given the Year Adviser Pat on the Back Awards. Well done to our Maple House Cup Winner ‘The Nemeans’ – who accumulated an admirable 1,532 points in Term 2!!

Jeans for Genes Day Fundraising & Mufti Day The SRC sold Krispy Kreme “Denim Donuts” on Thursday, with profits from sales going to Jeans for Genes. A Mufti Day with a $2 gold coin donation will be held, along with Year 10 volunteers selling fundraising merchandise during the day at Westfield’s Eastgardens Shopping Centre. Acceptable clothing on this day for all

students include jeans, a warm jumper, and sports shoes or boots. No leggings, shorts or UGG boots can be worn. NEW FUNDRAISING OPTIONS In 2011 we are offering flexible, fun and easy options for raising funds. Below is the URL of our school’s online fundraising page which can be used to collect donations. The fundraising page is: http://fundraise.jeansforgenes.org.au/stspyridon_college MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSESSMENT DATES In week 1 all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 received assessment due dates for Term 3. Students need to ensure they begin work on these tasks as soon as notifications are received. In this way they can more effectively plan and manage their time, clarify any issues that may arise and speak to their teachers, and thus place themselves in the best position to maximize results. POLICE VISITS At various points during the year local Police Liaison Officers visit the school during Pastoral Care lessons to address students on a variety of topics. This week Year 11 was privileged to listen to a presentation on Driver Safety, by the Commanding Officer of the Highway Patrol Unit. Students also had the opportunity to examine a highway patrol vehicle, try on bullet proof vests and satisfy their curiosity by asking endless questions.

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE (PRC) This term students will continue the PRC reading program, however reading logs need to be finalised by week 6. In order to qualify for a certificate of merit from the Premier, students need to have read a total of 20 books. Fifteen of these from the PRC list of books appropriate to their age group and 5 personal choice selections. It is important that students keep up their reading as it aids literacy development and assists with overall academic improvement. Ms G Kokinelis Dean of Middle School C A R E E R N E W S UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME is a private Catholic university with two campuses in Sydney. Applications are made directly to the University and students cannot apply through the University Admissions Centre (UAC). Applicants are required to supply the following by 30 September:

o a completed “Undergraduate Application Form for Admission 2012” nominating your course preferences – available in Prospectus,

o a Personal Statement in the form of an essay of approximately 300 words in length, outlining the reasons for your preferences

o relevant supplementary documentation o full academic records for year 11 and

Semester 1 and/or trial results of year 12 – if available.

Each application is considered on an individual basis. Applicants who have met admissions requirements, will be invited for an interview which will be conducted by a member of the academic staff. After the interview, the university will decide whether they made you an offer to one of your preferences. UNIVERSITY OPEN DAYS are being held from mid August to mid September. The list of days has been on the noticeboard for several weeks. The Broadway universities, (Sydney, UTS and Notre Dame) will hold their days together on 27 August. Uni of Western Sydney’s Open Day is on 28 August at Parramatta, UNSW will be 3 September, Macquarie on 10 September and Australian Catholic Uni on 3 and 10 September. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are encouraged to attend these days as they can be fun as well as

being informative. Ask a couple of friends to go with you or go with your parents.

Ο κόσµος, η κοινωνία και η τεχνολογία έχουν αλλάξει πολύ τα τελευταία χρόνια και δεν µπορούµε να κάνουµε πίσω αν και πολλοί το θέλουν αυτό. Πιστεύω πως στη σηµερινή µας πολυάσχολη ζωή, η ψυχαγωγία είναι πολύ σηµαντική και τα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια προσφέρουν αυτή την ψυχαγωγία όπου και να βρίσκεσαι, είτε είσαι µέσα σ’ ένα αυτοκίνητο και θέλεις ν’ απασχοληθείς, είτε είσαι στο σπίτι σου και θέλεις να απασχοληθείς µόνος σου µια και δεν έχεις παρέα ή ακόµα και όταν είσαι µε φίλους που έχουν τα ίδια γούστα µε εσένα και αγαπάνε τα ίδια ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια. Επίσης πιστεύω πως πολά ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια είναι εκπαιδευτικά και για µικρούς και για µεγάλους. Πολλά παιδιά αγαπάνε ιδιαίτερα τα παιχνίδια που έχουν σχέση µε τα Μαθηµατικά επειδή µπορούν να παίξουν ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια που έχουν σχέση µ’ αυτό το µάθηµα. Είναι κάτι που προσεγγίζει το ενδιαφέρον τους και κάνει την µάθηση πιο εύκολη και πιο ευχάριστη. Πιστεύω πως δεν µπορούµε πλέον να ζήσουµε χωρίς αυτή την τεχνολογία και τα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια συνέχεια γίνονται όλο και καλύτερα. Αυτοί που τα σχεδιάζουν πάντα προσπαθούν να σχεδιάσουν κάτι πιο πρωτότυπο. Φυσικά, όπως όλα τα παιχνίδια µπορεί να έχουν και κινδύνους, αλλά αυτό εξαρτάται από το κάθε άτοµο. Αν κάποιος είναι προσεχτικός, αν είναι οι γονείς

προσεχτικοί µε τα παιδιά τους, δε θα επιτρέψουν στα παιδιά να παίζουν παιχνίδια που είναι ακατάλληλα για την ηλικία τους ή που µπορεί να τους κάνουν κακό. Αυτή είναι η γνώµη µου και θα ήθελα να πω προσωπικά πως εγώ αγαπώ όλα τα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια που έχω κι έχω µερικά που τα αγαπώ ιδιαίτερα. Παίζω µαζί τους όταν έχω ώρα, µε ψυχαγωγούν, µε διασκεδάζουν και µε απασχολούν. ∆εν βαριέµαι ποτέ γιατί η διασκέδαση βρίσκεται όπου βρίσκοµαι κι εγώ. Renee Hatzistergos Year 12 L I S T E N I N G T O O U R S T U D E N T S SRC MONTHLY REVIEW Since our last report the SRC has further discussed the three goals we have set for this year and various general business items brought up by SRC class representatives. Here are some of what has been done so far and some ideas for our future development. First on the list of goals is, ‘Giving Back’ which is about fundraising for community organisations. Our first fundraiser occurred last term was a Pancake Day for the Cancer Council. In Term 3, the SRC’s are planning to sell blue crispy cream donuts in the lead up to Jeans for Genes Day (during non fasting period) in addition to the usual Mufti Day and merchandise selling at Eastgardens. With the second goal on our list ‘School Improvements’, this term we plan to undertake a Canteen Survey to find out what students want to see sold and available in the canteen. Additionally, we are aiming towards improving the bathrooms by beginning work on the request list for repairs, and then start generating beautification ideas. During our most recent SRC meeting, we discussed how our school diaries can be improved. Continuing, our third SRC goal which focuses on our ‘Environmental Plan’, we have been discussing ways to improve the environment and have suggested that by Terms 3 to 4 we will ‘adopt a fruit tree’, introduce the selling of “Thank You Water” bottles in the canteen, as well as investigate and examine recycling options.

More details about these last two initiatives will be given in our next review. Finally, we encourage all of you to relay your thoughts and suggestions to your class SRC representative every second week during Pastoral Care and we will do our best to listen to your voices, and follow through. Kaliope Kefalas (Yr 8) & Nicole Adam (Yr 7) Student Council Representatives WORLD VISION GLOBAL LEADERSHIP CONVENTION Does anyone realize that East Timor, a country that is 1 hour away from Darwin, and one of our closest neighbours; is one of the poorest countries in the World? Also, that right now in the African countries of Kenya and Somalia there is a devastating drought bringing starvation, hardship and unfortunately death to millions. These are some of the global issues we were recently made aware of. On the 17th of June Theodore Kipriotis, Constance Synesios, Maria Mio and I accompanied by Miss Kladakis, attended the World Vision Global Leadership Convention at Homebush. To get us thinking, and as a bit of a joke, the organizers stated that the secret to leadership is “the scarf “. To clarify this they showed images of key world leaders over time, and to our surprise, they were all wearing scarves. Think about it, look around, how many people can you see wearing scarves? In winter, it would be fair to say….. many. Simply speaking we are all able to wear a scarf, just as we are all able to be leaders, it is basically a matter of choice. Following this introduction we were spoken to about The World Leadership Simulation activity that we would be taking part in. This involved setting up a micro economy in which we had to provide foods and goods to our ‘country’. Each country has different needs to others. For example I was Swahili, Constance was India, Theodore was Timor and Maria was from China. Here each country had to wear different colored scarves and make a chant. Each country had an objective to cut paper cubes which contained food and goods but working against us was the 10 minute deadline. If we made the criteria we received 20 points but if we didn’t

make it in time the country was given 0 points. Anything extra was worth 1 point. After three rounds we had a lunch break but after we got straight into the simulation again with two rounds left. It became very competitive and a bit physical. In order to keep our food and goods we had to have enough soldiers. If we were short another country could invade and take everything. After this simulation we made our way to the exhibition hall to learn who won the simulation and to listen to inspiring people who shared their life story and their experiences of living in poverty. One of the most thought provoking things we learnt was that there was enough food and water for every country and every individual on earth, but because of greed and fear some countries become more powerful than others and they monopolize resources. Power seems to drive everyone crazy and it ends up with them becoming less humane. The guest presenters at the convention as Daniel has already said, were very honest and moving in talking about their countries and life experiences. The first speaker was Grace. She was bought up in Northern Uganda and was trained to fight along side other children who were abducted to fight in the war. Here the LRA also know as the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda somehow used gods will as justification for killing thousands. Following this we saw the world statistic on hunger and poverty. Hunger is the biggest killer in the world. Diseases such as HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria together still can’t compete with Hunger. 22 500 children alone die daily due to hunger. In Bangladesh 50% of the income is for food in comparison to Australia where 20% of the income if for food. Our next session provided an in depth focus on East Timor. Here we were faced with the sad fact that people of that country, the country Daniel mentioned at the start, that is just 1 hour from Darwin, eat bark off the sago tree for five months of the year. These five months are know as the hungry season. This is because the crops are left to rejuvenate resulting in no food being available. Just before lunch we were given a box that looked like it may be a chocolate bar and were told it is a specialty of East Timor. Once opened it was obvious we were mistaken, it was a block of wood. This is what people ate, they shredded it, mashed it and then ate it. While it was shocking

and unimaginable, it did help us understand the difficulties faced by our closest neighbours, and it just doesn’t seem right. Surely we all have some responsibility to help, to do something real. Half the populations are children and again half the population fight for food each day during the hungry season. It is hard to believe East Timor experiences more poverty than most of Africa. At this point we were introduced to the ideas of “the group effect” and “ the hero effect”. The Group effect is where everyone is in a mob mentality. Everyone is influenced by each other and will do what ever it takes to fit in. The hero effect is standing up for what you believe. Abraham Lincoln stated that “what ever you are, be a good one”. That is the one fundamental belief for leaders and it is something we all need to consider and take on board. Lastly, we were spoken to by the 2011 youth ambassador and learnt that by participating in the 40hour famine this year every dollar raised will go towards helping East Timor fight poverty and not go hungry during the Hungry season. PARLIAMENT HOUSE VISIT On Thursday 16th June we were given the opportunity to attend NSW Parliament House in the city; with a variety of other school leaders from schools across NSW. The day began with

various members of parliament from across the State imparting their views as to what makes a good leader. The quality that gained consensus from all the MPs is the ability to be able to listen to people’s needs and continuously have regard to them when making decisions. This is the most effective way of ensuring that as many people as possible are satisfied with the decisions one makes as a leader. The members of parliament agreed that this is their main aim when making decisions for their electorates. In regards to becoming involved in politics, the MPs strongly urged us to “have a life” before doing so – it’s important to gain some perspective on the world first and the issues facing society today. Our next activity involved being taken to the room where statements are made and released to the public, such as when a new law is passed. Our guide showed us the variety of backdrops for the lectern that are used depending on the occasion. For example, there is one of the Sydney Harbour Bridge overlooking the water, one of the outside of Parliament House at night time, and one with the Olympic Rings used when Australia hosted the Olympics in 2000. Next we were able to sit in on the debating of Bills in the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. The Legislative Assembly was debating the Industrial Relations Amendment (Public Sector Conditions of Employment) Bill 2011 involving changes to conditions of employment, and the legislative council was debating the Payroll Tax Rebate Scheme (Jobs Action Plan) Bill 2011 which aims to assist the creation of new jobs. Although both discussions involved rather complex issues, it was interesting to gain an insight into the workings of parliament especially when, at times, the arguments became quite heated! Finally we took a tour of the historic Government House and were addressed by NSW Governor-General Marie Bashir. Her talk was definitely the most interesting part of the day. Her various accomplishments throughout her life, including her work with disadvantaged Indigenous children and adolescents with mental health illnesses, make her a very inspirational woman and a person we as young leaders can look up to. Her role as Governor includes leading important community events such as Anzac Day memorial services and providing assent to bills. The day enabled us to gain a greater insight into the qualities valued most in leaders, and we hope

Ivana Bojanovic represented NSWCIS at the Girls Football Championships. This is the last opportunity for Ivana to represent St Spyridon College in Football. Ivana is a talented footballer who will be missed greatly as she was an exceptional leader who was a vital member in many school and representative teams and instrumental in the success involved in Girls Football. Hopefully, Ivana will continue to offer guidance and support to the younger football teams in the future.

ISA NETBALL Late last term we hosted a number of schools for the ISA Netball competition. This was exciting for many students as they had the chance to play at their school grounds for the first time. All teams were victorious with a nail biting game between St Spyridon Opens and Barker in the battle for 1st position. A special thank you to Mr Zafiropoulos, for his exceptional hospitality and continued support of the sporting program. Ms K.
