THE DEAN’S MESSAGE

Two Wolves“So far today, dear God, I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, and haven’t been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. But in a few minutes I’m going to get out of bed and I’m probably going to need a lot more help.”

This humorous prayer has a lot of truth in it. We all struggle with what the church calls “passions.” Passions are obses-sive emotions, attitudes desires and ways of thinking and acting that blind our dealings with ourselves, with each other and with God. They are perversions of the good and useful impulses which take away our freedom for genuine love.

With the holiday season just around the corner our emotions are heightened with stresses, temptations and pressures that are symp-tomatic of the season. We must take care to truly make it a “Happy Holiday Season.” That is why I share with you the following parable which I have used in several sermons in the past few years. It bears repeating, because we indeed need a lot of help from God.

“One day a Holy father told his disciple about a battle that goes on inside people. He said: “my son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.”

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is God…It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.

The disciple thought about it for a moment and asked his mentor “which wolf wins?”

The Holy Father simply replied: “THE ONE YOU FEED”

Let us feed our soul and heart with Jesus during the holidays and always. He alone satisfies.

In Christ,

Fr. John

November 2007

We give thanks to God always for you, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceas-ing your work of faith, labor of love and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 1:3)

I would like to convey my heartfelt appreciation for your recent donations to the Greek Fire Relief Fund and to the California Disaster Relief Fund. Your magnanimous generosity makes it possible for our Cathedral to respond to the urgent need of so many people who were adversely impacted by these catastrophes. No doubt, your thoughtful benefaction, which we know, is a work of faith and a labor of love will greatly help alleviate their suffering and set them on the road to recovery.

On behalf of the Parish Council Board of Directors, I take this opportunity to congratulate Chris Julias who was honored on Oct.19th by the Saint Sophia Camp’s Golf Tournament Committee for his support, dedication and years of contributions to our beloved Cathedral. Yia sou Chris!!

Congratulations to the children of the Hellenic Academy – aka – Greek School, for their wonderful presentation on the occasion of “OXI” Day. The program was very moving with the traditional patriotic songs and poems. Our thanks to all the teachers, administrators and volunteers who put the program together, as always, job well done. Thank you.

The Holidays are rapidly approaching and the excitement of giving will reach new heights. On your gift list please don’t forget to support the “CASH FOR CHRISTMAS 2007” campaign, a ticket or two will make a great gift and an original stocking stuffer while you are supporting a very worthy cause. It is the 28th anniversary that our Foundation has administered this campaign. The proceeds are primarily used to pay the Insur-ance Premiums on ALL Cathedral properties except the Foundation’s Apartment Residence Building; thus providing great finan-cial support to the Parish Council Budget and to the General Fund Account. We all must do our best to sell or buy as many tickets as possible. The Committee, under the Chairmanship of Mr. Angelo Pappas, consists of volunteer parishioners who have worked each and every year to make this a successful fundraising campaign.

On the occasion of the 1,600th anniversary of the Repose of St. John Chrysostom, a Pan Orthodox Divine Liturgy will be celebrat-ed on Nov. 13th in the Cathedral followed by a reception for the Clergy in the Hall.On the same evening, His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos will be conducting the FDF Regional Meeting in the Hall. Please find time to bring your children and attend this important FDF Ministry meeting.

On Sunday, November 18th, after Liturgy, the ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY will take place. All eligible members are invited to come and participate in this important function; the Budget for the year 2008 will be presented for approval.A series of reports will also be on the Agenda and the final numbers –net income- from the Easter Picnic and the LA Greek Fest will be announced. A light lunch to be served at the break

Please remember that we must have a quorum in order to vote and approve the Budget. Your cooperation and support will be greatly appreciated.Hronia Polla to all Cosmas and Damianos on their November 1st name day.Don’t forget that Daylight Savings time ends on Nov. 4th

This is a continuation of outreach and supports our Greek Orthodox brothers and sisters in the Greek Orthodox Community there. This trip continues the relationship which began when a group from St. Sophia attended the consecration celebration of the new Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Havana by our Patriarch Bartholomew in January 2004. Greg Parkos active member of our congregation, who has visited Cuba 5 times in the last 3 years, will be coordinating administrative details of the tour for St. Sophia with the assistance of the expert travel group “Cuba Tours and Travel” which is based in LA. They welcome people, play an audiotape which informs the visitors about the iconography and history of our beautiful church, answer any questions they may have, and generally extend a warm welcome to all who come. The reward for their service is that they meet very interesting people and also learn many things about our own faith. No special training is required. You will receive all the materials needed, and you will be partnered with another docent on the day of the month which you select to serve. Docents are needed Tuesday through Fridays, but you will only be assigned for one day each month.
