Ordinary Time

Tomorrow we return to Ordinary Time in the Church calendar. There is nothing “ordinary” about Ordinary Time. In Church language, “Ordinary Time” refers to ordinal (numbered) time. The Weeks of the Year are numbered consecu-tively to mark the passing of time. Each Sunday is a Holy Day of Obligation as we celebrate the Paschal mystery. The Feast of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season. Ordinary Time calls us to go forth and live the joy of Easter in our “ordinary” (daily) lives. To mark the change of seasons, the color of our vestments is green rather than the white of Easter. However, the next two Sundays in Ordinary Time are replaced with special feasts that continue the joy of Easter in our liturgical celebrations. Next Sunday is Trinity Sunday, and on June 18th we will celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Ordinary Time extends to the end of the Church year, highlighted by the feast of Christ the King. The new Church year will begin on December 3rd with the celebration of the First Sunday of Advent.

The Solemnity of Pentecost

The reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes the believers “all in one place together” as “Jews from every na-tion” came to Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost (celebrating the giving of the Law to Moses and the establishment of the Covenant on Mt. Sinai). Pentecost, Greek for 50 days is celebrated by Christians fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus to commemorate the birth of the Church. Described here, the Holy Spirit comes upon the first disciples in a “strong driving wind” and then settled on them as “tongues as of fire.” The large crowd of Jews was “astounded and in amazement” as they listened to the disciples and heard them speak, in their own native languages, proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. St. Paul’s first Letter to the Corinthians speaks of the importance of all the members of the Church. Each member receives different spiritual gifts, forms of service and workings from the same Spirit. St. Paul uses the analogy of the necessity of all the parts of the human body to make it whole, and says that all the members are necessary to make the Church whole. The reading from John’s gospel relates Jesus’ visitation to the disciples on the day after his resurrection. They were cowering in the upper room, afraid of the authorities. Jesus bids them peace, and shows them his hands and his side. They rejoice. Jesus again tells them, “Peace be with you” and breathing on them he says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” He tells them, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

Acts 2:1-11 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 John 20:19-23

Pentecost Sunday Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. This great feast commemorates both the descent of the Holy Spirit to dwell within us and the birth of the Church. In the Acts of the Apostles, we hear the story of the disciples in the up-per room when the Spirit appeared with the sound of a strong wind and tongues of fire rested upon each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and were empowered to proclaim the mighty acts of God in the languages of the many nations. The symbol of the wind reminds us that the power of God cannot be contained and that God moves where he wills. We know that, like the wind, the Holy Spirit is present; and although we cannot see the Spir-it, we see his activity in our world. The symbol of fire associated with the Holy Spirit reminds us of the special pres-ence of God in our world, and harkens back to the appearance of God to Moses in the midst of the burning bush. Fire also is a symbol of the light of Christ, burning in our hearts through the gift of the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation.

In John’s gospel, the apostles receive the Holy Spirit when Jesus breathes upon them and commissions them “As the Father has sent me, so I send you .” This marks the beginning of the Church, reminding us that we are a missionary church, called to proclaim the gospel. Jesus gives the apostles the authority to forgive sins, a reference to baptism and membership in the body of Christ. We still proclaim this gospel 2,000 years later. We proclaim the Good News that in Christ Jesus we receive forgiveness for sin and are reunited with God by the love of Christ. Christ ascends to heaven and leaves us the Holy Spirit to guide the Church on earth in her mission to build the kingdom of God. As St. John reminds us, the kingdom of God is already present in the living body of Christ.

St. Paul tells us that each and every one of us is part of that body by virtue of our baptism by the Holy Spirit. We each have different gifts, but there is only one body in Christ. We are to use our gifts for the benefit of all, to build up the body of Christ (the Church). It is by the power of the Holy Spirit living within us that we are able to be Christ for one another, living as Jesus did and fulfilling his commandment to love one another as he has loved us. We need to listen to the voice of God and trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to help us to carry out his will.

Pentecost marks the end of the Easter Season and the return to Ordinary Time. Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis have all called us to the New Evangelization, encouraging us to take our faith outside the walls of the church and bring it to those in need. Let’s take the joy of Easter into the ordinary routines of our daily lives and share that faith and joy with everyone whom God has put in our lives.

Our parish priests normally retire from parish administration at age 70, most stay active as long as they are physical-ly able, helping in parishes, celebrating sacraments and visiting the sick and homebound. Their ongoing ministry and witness are a great gift to the people of the archdiocese. There will be a second collection next weekend for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese to help defray their medical and retirement expenses. Thank you for your con-tinued support and prayers.

The School Graduation was celebrated on May 25th. It was a beautiful event, filled with faith and families mark-ing this very special occasion. It is bittersweet, as I have both sadness to see them go and joy that they are doing so well and are moving forward with their lives. They are a wonderful class. These twenty-one fine young people will be moving on to high school in the fall, but they will forever be part of our parish family. Kindergarten Gradua-tion was held the following morning. This, too, was a joyous time for family and friends.

The School Board is hosting the Coffee and Donuts today after all the masses. This monthly social event will take a break for the summer and begin again in September. At the 10 a.m. mass there will be a special end of the year Blessing for Students.

Next Sunday is Father’s Day. Although my own father passed away over twenty years ago, he was a wonderful presence in my life and he continues to be an important influence today. Let us celebrate the influence of these men and all those who have been mentors and role models for us throughout the years. There will be a special blessing for our fathers next weekend at all the masses.

Have a great summer. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Dear Parents of Students Going into 4th - 8th Grade in the Fall, I believe typing fast, accurately, and without looking at the keyboard will be very beneficial to your chil-dren. I gave all of these students homework over the summer. They should practice their typing five to 20 minutes a day, three to five days week. There will be a typing test during the first week of school! You can help them. The program, freetypinggame.net, shows them which fingers to use on which keys. Please encourage them to use the correct fingering! Please contact me with any concerns and/or questions. I check my email during the school year and during the summer. Sincerely, Earl Strassberger [email protected]

Stories from “The 5 O’Clockers” Late January, we interviewed several long-time parishioners of St. Robert Bellarmine to find out how they found our parish, reflect on some of their favorite memories here, and hear why they chose to stay all these years. Some came to SRB because it was the closest church or school. But they all made a conscious decision to stay. The stories that surfaced deserve more attention than storage in a time capsule.

This is the first installment of stories from “The 5 O’Clockers,” highlighting several of our long-time parishioners who also happen to frequent the 5pm Saturday evening mass. This is how they found St. Robert Bellarmine and what has kept them coming back year after year. “My parents bought a house down the block in 1938,” said Lois Tortorelli. “We started with Father Gillespie and our church was the present school gymnasium. I came from Prussing every Wednesday at 2 o’clock for catechism.” Almost 80 years later, Lois is still proud to call SRB home. She has enjoyed countless bible studies (now Lectio Divina), St. Patrick’s Day and other parties and fundraising galas over the years. “This place is enduring,” said Lois. Loretta Swiatak came to the parish in 1959, moving from Humboldt Park to the quieter Northwest side. Father John Dowling was then Pastor, taking over from Fr. Gillespie in 1955. “We didn’t know what church to go to, St. Constance or St. Robert’s, so Fr. Dowling said, “Come to our church.” Fr. John Dowling demanded respect from adults and chil-dren alike. Many of these long-time parishioners have distinct memories of the priest from childhood. “He was tough. If you talked in church, all he had to do was look at you and that was it.” Thankfully, most of her memories from St. Robert’s are much warmer. “We love the neighborhood and the people here,” said Loretta, who with her sister Mary Lou, has enjoyed the Women’s Club and singing in the Resurrection Choir. The welcoming hospitality was a repeated theme among the group when reflecting on first coming to SRB. Lillian Guiffre came here from St. Anthony’s Parish on the far South Side in 1989. She was a recent widow and joined her sis-ter here. Over the years, Lillian has enjoyed singing in the Resurrection Choir and taking part in the SRB Senior Group aptly named the “Happy Club.” Like Lillian, Sharon Lorenz also followed her sister here from the South Side. Prior to joining, Sharon would come from the suburbs and spend weekends with her sister and 5 young kids, always making time for mass together in the old church. “About 20 years ago, I finally said maybe I should join the parish. It’s a very welcoming place – nice priests, nice people who reach out –that makes all the difference,” said Sharon. “Everyone is so inclusive here—especially the nuns. They are dolls.” Sharon cited a perfect example of this inclusive spirit with a story from one of our residing nuns, Sr. Ann Fanella. After mass one day, a woman had asked Sr. Ann if she could call her a cab, saying she had no one to take her home. “Well guess who started picking her up and driving her home after church?” prompted Sharon. From that single request for a phone call, Sr. Ann started a sign-up list matching up parishioners needing rides with locals offering to drive. “There are a lot of extraordinary people doing things like that here,” said Sharon. Other longtime parishioners include Delores Purtell and her daughter Susan, who have been with SRB since 1967. “It will be 50 years this Memorial Day,” said Delores. Early on, Delores struggled to find time for parish activities. Her hands were full with family demands of three young children. “They were a handful,” said Delores, as her now adult daughter Susan sat next to her shaking her head. But as the Purtell kids grew, so did the importance of SRB in their lives. Many of Delores’s memories of the parish sum up life’s highs and lows, including burying her husband, Gordon, and other relatives, and also celebrating sacraments as a family. Gordon did not grow up Catholic, but something at-tracted him at St. Robert’s. He was Confirmed in the Catholic faith the same year as their son Kevin. “That’s a very special memory for me,” said Delores. Her daughter Susan, who attended school at SRB has returned to the area to be a part of the parish once again. She has taught religious education here and has enjoyed many parish events. “I just love this place,” said Susan. Mom Delores credits the nuns and other teaching staff at St. Robert’s for shaping her children into the adults they are today. “The sisters and teachers at SRB were all exceptional. It was their influence and inspiration that sent my children to graduate from good universities. This parish has a great spirit of giving. I’m so grateful for the men and women who volunteer their time to keep this church and school going.” Here’s to keeping it going! Stay tuned for more memories and reflections around SRB past, present and future.
