AN N UAL R E PORT • F I SCAL 2013
BACOA E n d ow m e ntTo commemorate our 25th anniversary in 2010, BACOA established an endowment fund to ensure long-term continuation of services to seniors, family caregivers and the community. Three generous donors created a challenge grant of $75,000, with the provision that it be matched by donations during the anniversary year. That challenge was met and exceeded during 2010-2011 . We thank those who have given and who continue to give to create a secure future for BACOA. The following donors have contributed or pledged to the fund:

Unleash the Powerof Your Age
In December, we worked with the Barrington Police Department to make winter a little safer
for seniors with free car safety checks. Mechanics from Marquardt of Barrington conducted the inspections and gave participants a written
checklist if their cars needed further attention.
Caroling preschoolers from the Children’s Preschool Workshop helped to make the season
bright at BACOA’s holiday luncheon.
No one loves income tax time, but AARP volunteers put in countless hours every year to
make the process a little more bearable. In 2012, 229 seniors had their taxes done in our offices.

Taking care of an older relative can be lonely and frustrating. Our “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” class gives caregivers practical advice on taking better care of their loved one—as well as taking better care of themselves.
Community organizations generously share their talents and time for BACOA’s programs. Last summer, the group Share a Smile pre-sented a program on Indian culture and arts for the weekly lunch program; the group also
helps deliver Meals with Wheels.
BACOA’s 2012 Senior Hall of Fame featured community residents who have made their mark in government, conservation, volunteerism, the arts, nonprofits, and more.
No one ever wants to give power away—do they?
Actually, we do. We want seniors to know their own power—to feel strong and independent. To share their knowledge and experience. To remain vital and active in our community.
Sometimes that’s easy for BACOA to help with. We can offer a class in healthy aging. Or volunteer opportunities. Or a weekly lunch where seniors can catch up with friends old and new.
Other times, feeling powerful can be a little more difficult, and BACOA helps there, too. A home-deliv-ered meal, a detangled insurance question, some guidance on a caregiving issue, or even a friendly shoulder to lean on—they all make a big difference in how well you can take on the challenges of growing older.
The best way we know to enhance the power of older adults is to give them the tools they need to remain vital and engaged. Some of it is serious, some of it is fun, some of it is just hard work. But the results are always worth it.
Our community helps, too, by sharing its skills, its resources; and its enthusiasm. This support has powered us for 28 years, and we are grateful for it. And always happy to pass the power along.
