THOUGHT: The average church goer often thinks nothing would be missed by staying home.

St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10 BRETHREN, working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; be-hold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend our-selves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the pow-er of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet mak-ing many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

The Gospel according to Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had com-passion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES: Will begin on Wednesday, October 19th and be held every Wednesday for six weeks during the day at 11:00 a.m. and again in the evening at 6:30 p.m. This will allow more people to attend. The first six-week session will cover general education catechism about our faith. Everyone is welcome.

Grave Mode By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. To the robber You opened Paradise. The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all that You had risen, O Christ our God, and granted the world Your great mercy.

Hymn for the Apostle Ἠχος γ

Third Mode O holy Apostle James, make intercession to our merciful God, that He grant our souls forgiveness of offenses.

Hymn of Saint Nicholas Patron of our Parish Ἠχος δ

Fourth Mode A model of faith and the image of gentleness, the example of your life has shown you forth to your sheep-fold to be a master of temperance. You obtained thus through being lowly, gifts from on high, and riches through poverty. Nicholas, our father and priest of priests, intercede with Christ our God that He may save our souls.

Second Mode O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.

LEND ME YOUR EARS: There is an old legend about someone who went to heaven and saw a lot of what looked like dried mushrooms. On closer examina-tion he discovered that they were human ears. They were the ears of people who on earth went to church every Sunday, listened with pleasure to the word of God, but did nothing about what they heard. The word of God never got beyond the ear. It never penetrated the mind and heart to become a life dedicated to the ser-vice of God. The result was that after death only their ears were saved; only their ears reached heaven. “He who has ears to hear,” said Jesus, “Let him hear.” One of the greatest compliments we can pay to another person is to listen to him. To listen is to show that you care, you love. The doctor will ask the patient: “Where are you hurting?” Then he will listen very carefully. Often the diagnosis is made as a result of his listening. How much we need to listen! If we listen to God, His voice will tell us to lis-ten in love to the hurts of people. So many people are hurting, and often they try to tell us where the pain is. But we cannot help them unless we hear them and are sensitive to their needs. Listening, is a gift you can give to anyone no matter who you are. And it doesn’t cost a cent. Yet to the person who is hurting inside, it is a gift precious beyond price. “If you love to listen, you will gain knowledge and if you incline your ear you will become wise” (Sicach 6:33). It is by listening, not talking, that we gain wisdom and knowledge.

STEWARDSHIP NOTE: We have concluded three-quarters of the year and there are still many parishioners who have not signed pledge cards for 2016 in support of our parish ministries. To date there is still over $55,000.00 in unpaid pledges. Also, others who have pledged have fallen very behind in their commit-ment. Remember it is the parishioners who make up the parish. Only with your support can we keep the doors of our church open. GIVE TO GOD AS HE HAS GIVEN TO YOU!

PARISH ASSEMBLY: On Sunday, October 23, 2016 immediately following the Divine Liturgy we will be holding our Fall Parish Assembly. Please note: To participate in the Fall Parish Assembly meeting, Stewards must have paid 66% of their current annual pledge prior to the Fall Parish Assembly meeting. Please don’t miss this important meeting.

FROM THE FATHERS: In the matter of piety, pover ty serves us better than wealth, and work better than idleness, especially since wealth becomes an obstacle even for those who do not devote themselves to it. Yet, when we must put aside our wrath, quench our envy, soften our anger, offer our prayers, and show a dispo-sition which is reasonable, mild, kindly, and loving, how could poverty stand in our way? For we accomplish these things not by spending money but by making the correct choice. Almsgiving above all else requires money, but even this shines with a brighter luster when the alms are given from our poverty. The widow who paid in the two mites was poorer than any human, but she outdid them all.

    – St. John Chrysostom

CHUCKLE: A little boy opened the big, old family Bible with fascination. He looked at the old pages as he turned them. The Bible had belonged to his grandmoth-er. Then something fell out of the Bible. He picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed between pages. "Momma, look what I found", the boy called out. "What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy's voice he answered, "I think it's Adam's suit!!!!!"
