Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds conceal me. Do not permit me to be parted from you. From the evil foe protect me. At the hour of my death call me. And bid me come to you, to praise you with all your saints for ever and ever. Amen.

I come from a family that loves choral music. In fact, I spent all of my adolescence and many adult years accompanying choirs. About 10 years ago I acquired an album of choral music, Best Loved Hymns from York Minster, and found myself drawn back time and again to their arrange-ment and performance of the ancient Christian prayer, “Anima Christi.” Entitled “Soul of My Saviour,” their rendition artfully draws out the poetic meaning of the Anima Christi: a most appropriate hymn for Corpus Christi. If we profess that God is love, what better way to adore him than in the Eucharist, his body and blood given for us? What better way to encounter his sacramental presence than by offering ourselves to him at every Mass? And what greater love than the divine love of Christ—his union with us in the Eucharistic sacrifice—that continues to strengthen, heal, and nourish us for the journey?

Thank you for so generously supporting the hymnal campaign last fall. We are ready to install the new St. Michael Hymnal and St. Edmund Campion Missal and Hymnal. Saturday, June 9, we plan to have a work day to exchange the old for the new hymnals. Contact the church office if you would like to come by and help! And soon we will have our permanent lectionary in the pews as well, the Lumen Christi Missal. Be sure to check out the index of hymns and look for your favorite. I know that one of my favorite hymns is there! Fr. Tim _________________________________________________________

Stewardship & Development The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

The bishops’ stewardship pastoral asks, “And what do Christians bring to the Eucharistic celebration and join there with Jesus’ offering?”

The answer: “Their lives as Christian disciples; their personal vocations and the stewardship they have exercised regarding them; their individual

contributions to the great work of restoring all things in Christ.”

Mission Collection: Next Sunday we welcome Fr. Linh Nguyen, a priest from the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, who is making an appeal for his diocese, which encompasses an area the size of Maryland, Delaware, and Rhode Island combined. Half the diocese is in the heart of Appalachia: a place of great beauty and also great poverty. Of 60 parishes in the diocese, roughly 40 rely on external funding to meet daily expenses. The diocese offers the Mission and Ministry Program, providing over one million dollars annually for applicant parishes, schools, and outreach ministries in the mountains. Fr. Linh is grateful for the chance to share this mission with us, and he invites us to join him in serving God.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTION FOR JUNE: That social networks may work towards that inclusiveness which respects others for their differences.

Faith Enrichment

The Basic Teachings of the Catholic Faith program offers a general introduction to the theological principles found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While some of the courses are primarily for catechists, they are general enough to offer content useful to any Catholic adults who wish to deepen their understanding of the Church’s teachings and in so doing, become better equipped for Christian discipleship and evangelization. Each of the five segments offers 6 Diocesan clock hours of instruction. $50 for all five classes. FREE for Saint Mary Cathedral parishioners who serve, or seek to serve, in Faith Formation ministry. Call the CFF office at 512-476-6182 for more information.

New Missals & Hymnals. We are very pleased to announce the church pew edition of our new missals and hymnals: The St. Michael Hymnal, Saint Edmund Campion Missal & Hymnal, and Lumen Christi Missal. Beginning the weekend of June 9-10, The St. Michael Hymnal and Saint Edmund Campion Missal & Hymnal will be in use at English Masses and Latin Mass, respectively. The Scripture readings will be contained in the Lumen Christi Missal, arriving this summer and will be distributed to the pews at that time. We will continue to use Flor y Canto and the Spanish missalette for Spanish Masses.

The changes in the liturgy brought about by the reforms of language that began in 2011, also affected the readings and responsorial parts of the Mass. The Worship hymnal has served us well these past years, but it is time to begin using the materials for the rites as they currently are in use. The choice of hymnals was carefully considered by the clergy and me, and we believe we have obtained the best possible music available for our congregation. Many hymns will be familiar; some will be new, and some will not be utilized by us but were included by the publisher as they are known to many Catholics.

One thing to note is that the Gregorian chants are in the traditional Medieval notation. It will take some getting used to but is easily learned and actually makes more sense for chant than the stemless notepad modern notation that has been in use for the past 40 or so years. We know it will take time to get used to the new hymnals and missals, but we are confident the editions chosen will suit our parish needs more than adequately.

The Cathedral clergy and Music Department thank the generous donors who made it possible to obtain our new hymnals. Your support is appreciated more than we could say.

Dr. Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, Director of Sacred Music

Howdy, I'm Alex Odom, Seminarian for the Diocese of Austin, and I will be working here at the Cathedral for the coming year. I grew up in a Catholic home schooling family of 10 children. I was always active in my home parish of St. Catherine of Siena, and after attending high school youth night and Diocesan Catholic

Youth Conference, I began discerning if God was calling me to the priesthood. When asked by the vocations director to get more experience of the world before applying, I went to college for two years and then applied to the seminary. I was then asked to complete my degree and reapply. After graduating in December 2015 from TAMU, I was accepted into the seminary formation program and was sent to St. Joseph's Abbey and Seminary College in St. Benedict Louisiana, just across the lake from New Orleans. My last two years were spent growing and learning with my brother seminarians. I have come to Saint Mary Cathedral for a year of pastoral work before entering the theologate next year. I look forward to meeting you and being part of the Cathedral community.

In addition, the traditional Catholic theme for the current month will be presented. We will conclude in time for confession, Rosary, and 12:05pm Mass to fulfill our First Saturday devotion. Bilingual when possible.
