STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.”

ACTS 13:52 Because the disciples heard Our Lord’s call, they were able to spread the Gospel message with strength and vitality. We, too, can experience that same joy if we take time to open our hearts, listen to God, ask for His direction and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our lives and our decisions.

PROCEDURE FOR MAKING APPEAL REQUESTS

—FOR OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS The Saint Joseph Pastoral Council has formalized the process for outside organizations requesting to make appeals during weekend Masses. The procedure, guidelines, and a convenient online request form can be found by going to our parish website—sjcnj.org — clicking on the “Contact Us” tab and then on “Appeal Request.” This new process will help the Pastoral Council to effectively evaluate and make decisions about out-of-parish requests for appeals.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER~ APRIL 17, 2016

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION AT SAINT JOSEPH

93 children will receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist starting this weekend and continuing on April 24, April 30-May 1, and May 7 at the 5 pm, 10:30 and 12 noon Masses. Please keep our First Communicants in your prayers. To see a photo of two of our young people who received the Sacrament for the first time this weekend, take a look at page 5 of this bulletin.

Because Bishop Dominic Marconi will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on 108 young

people of our parish this Friday and Saturday, I want to share with you some theological explanations of Confirmation, a sacrament that is not easy to describe briefly. I drew them from an entry by Günter Koch in Wolfgang Beinert and Francis Schu ssler Fiorenza’s Handbook of Catholic Theology, a very helpful resource. After mentioning scripture passages the Church has associated with the sacrament, especially several from Acts of the Apostles, the article points out that in a long development the celebration of Confirmation in the Western Church has come to be separated from Baptism by a number of years, especially because of the custom of having bishops normally administer it, a practice that highlights the bond to the Church that the sacrament strengthens. (The Church’s Eastern Rites traditionally offer the three sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist—at the same time, usually in infancy.) The Church’s first official comprehensive teaching about Confirmation came at the Council of Florence (1439-1445), which stated that:

1. It is one of the seven sacraments. 2. It imprints an indelible “character” (spiritual sign) on the soul. 3. It enables us to grow in grace and strength of faith. 4. In it, the Holy Spirit is given “that the Christian may courageously confess the name of Christ.” 5. The bishop is its ordinary minister. 6. The sacrament is conferred by an anointing with the oil of chrism and a formula of words. [Pope Paul VI modified the wording in 1971. Its definitive English translation, a project that has taken almost 45 years to finish, becomes mandatory this Pentecost.]

(continued above)

In 1547 the Council of Trent reaffirmed these teachings, adding that Confirmation is certainly a separate sacrament. The liturgical reforms rooted in the Second Vatican Council emphasized that the bishops are the original and primary ministers of Confirmation, that the sacrament has a close connection with Baptism, links us more closely to Christ and the Church, bestows the Holy Spirit’s special strength, and empowers us—and obliges us more strictly—to live our Christian vocations in the world. Some of the more recent approaches in the theology of Confirmation have called attention to

∎ the closer union of grace it gives us to Christ, our teacher, shepherd and priest ∎ our stronger tie to the Church, “the realm of the Spirit’s activity” and to the Church’s mission ∎ our “opportunity, and responsibility” for ratifying our baptism by “a free decision,” something that should have special importance today.

The article wisely says that Confirmation gives its recipients the chance to “say yes to their baptism and allow themselves to be drawn into the service of their innermost human and Christian vocation.” And even though the Holy Spirit is certainly given in baptism, through Confirmation “a growth in interiority (as in love) and in intensity is possible that at the same time gives them new strength, new vital energy and enthusiasm, provided they allow the Spirit to take hold of them.” In other words, the more those who are confirmed cooperate with the sacrament’s graces, the more of those graces they will receive. Confirmation gives us great gifts, but also summons us to a great challenge: an increased vigor in living our Catholic Faith. Practicing Catholicism is not something we ever “graduate” from, but something we are called to be increasingly immersed in.

Msgr. David Hubba

MASS, ROSARY & LUNCHEON—MAY 7 Every year our Social Concerns Committee hosts a

special Mass for individuals who are handicapped and have a difficult time getting to Mass or social events. The Mass this year is open to ALL PARISHIONERS and will include Anointing of the Sick. The Mass is

scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at 12:00 noon in the Gym, followed by recitation of the Rosary and a luncheon. All facilities used are handicapped-accessible. In 2016 we mark the 53rd Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Moreover, we

celebrate it always on the Fourth Sunday in Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday. In today's Gospel reading, we hear about the sheep that always know the voice of the shepherd. May we also hear with ears of faith our Shepherd's call to discipleship.

Let us pray...

Jesus, good and gentle Shepherd, we pray for those among us who hear your voice and call to a vocation in the Church. Help them to be unafraid of that calling from you of service to the universal church. Give them courage to boldly say yes to your call. Help us to encourage them in their long journey of discernment and formation.

We offer our thanks to you for calling us to discipleship in many and various ways, as married men and women, as single men and women, as priests, deacons, and professed men and women.

We ask all these things in the name of the Good Shepherd, Jesus, our savior and our brother.

Amen.
