SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

I wanted to take this opportunity again to say thank you to the wonderful team of individuals who made this weekend possible. I never thought in my life that I would have the type of healing and peace that this week-end brought me. I feel like this is just the beginning of my healing, but that I am now on the right path. I also never thought that my story could resonate with others. Several individuals on the retreat spoke tome about how my story affected them. That meant so much to me. I also feel so much vailidation for my feelings that I previously felt were wrong because they were from my perspective and my personal hurt. I also want you to please, please relay the following message to Father Kelly and Father JasonI in this difficult climate of priest scandal, where priests in general are vilified, I want them to know how much I appreciated them this weekend. … (continued opposite)

A LETTER FROM A WOMAN WHO ATTENDED

RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT ON SEPT. 7-9, 2018

Please let anyone who needs to hear the message know how important their role is in this retreat. It wouldn’t be the same without them. … I know this is not goodbye and I’m so glad that I chose to attend this retreat in the Archdiocese of Newark. There is definitely a connection now, it feels like home, and I feel truly blessed to have met you all. God’s plan and timing is better than we can ever predict or imag-ine. Like Father Kelly said, we just have to get out of His way. With love and light, I look forward to the next time we meet.

TWENTY SEVTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 7, 2018

Thanks to all of you who have kindly prayed for me during my time of illness. Your prayers and expressions of sympathy

and encouragement that accompanied them have helped me more than you know and more than I can express. I am also grateful to my doctors for their professional expertise and enormously helpful kindness. I don’t know if I am free to mention their names publicly, so I won’t. They are affiliated with Holy Name Medical Center, where I encountered beautifully human help from all its staff, whether their work involved providing technical medical care or support services (housekeeping amenities, meals, and, of course, spiritual support). All these coalescing aspects of care show that Holy Name has committed itself to creating and sustaining a rich culture of compassionate excellence, something that happens by dedication and not by accident. I was never ill before my recent adventures. Whenever I thought of illness in terms of myself, it was mostly to think that at least it would give me the chance to do some enjoyable reading—a wrong judgment because of my impaired ability to concentrate that the conditions of illness imposed on me. Instead, I wound up listening to the radio a lot, which made me prey to some minor obsessions. For example, most traffic reporters insist on pronouncing New York’s Van Wyck Expressway “Van Wick.” The road, one of Robert Moses’ s many ambitious projects, was named for Robert Van Wyck, the first mayor of a five-borough New York City, who served from 1898 to 1901. Family members pronounce the name “Van Wī ke,” and they should know. This pronunciation carries with it the additional advantage of rhyming with the name of the great Dutch painter Van Dyke, which you would think should count for something. If the reporters wish to one day cover art, they had better take note. And, while we’re at it, wouldn’t any of them, or any recent New Yorker who comes from Kansas, indignantly correct anyone who pronounced Manhattan’s Houston Street like the Texas city rather than as “House-ton?” You can bet on it. Anyway, only when my health was improving could I reflect usefully on the reality of illness in our lives. The contemporary writer Paul Auster has reminded us that

You think it will never happen to you, that you are the only person in the world to whom none of these things will ever happen, and then, one by one, they all begin to happen to you, in the same way they happen to everyone else.

(continued above)

The 19th-century writer Henri-Fre de ric Amiel was the son of a French Huguenot family that fled to Switzerland after the Edict of Nantes. He became a philosophy professor in Geneva and kept a journal that was published after his death. One entry has interesting and valuable comments on illness and health, with allusions to the Psalms and the Gospel:

How frail a thing is health, and what a thin envelope protects our life against being swallowed up from without or disorganized from within! A breath, and the boat springs a leak or founders; a nothing, and all is endangered; a passing cloud, and all is darkness! Life is indeed a flower which a morning withers and the beat of a passing wing breaks down; it is the widow’s lamp, which the slightest blast of air extinguishes.

Amiel reminds us that our lives really belong to God, that

Life has been lent to us, and we owe it to our travelling companions to let them see what use we make of it to the end. We must show our brethren both how to live and how to die. These first summonses of illness have besides a divine value; they give us glimpses beyond the scenes of life; they teach us something of its awful reality, and its inevitable end. They teach us sympathy. They warn us to redeem the time while it is yet day. They awaken in us gratitude for the blessings which are still ours, and humility for the gifts which are in us. So that evils though they seem, they are really an appeal to us from on high, a touch of God’s fatherly scourge.

“Whoever is dear to me I … chastise ” (Rv 3, 19).

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “So out of the ground the Lord God formed every best of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. (Genesis: 2:19) The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t something recently invented by the Church. Just as generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.
