SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Sacrament Coordinator Arlene Kennedy (1) directed a host of parent volunteers in a special First Communion Retreat for our children preparing to receive the sacrament. Each child made a prayer cross (3), baked bread in the shape of a lamb (2), viewed a movie about the Eucharist (4), heard the stories of Our Lord’s miracles (5), and practiced receiving Jesus with Deacon George (6).

Fr. Roy blessed the bread and our children!

This year’s baseball season has begun, which is always a welcome indication that warmer weather is arriving. Last year, Joe Cox wrote

Almost Perfect, a book about 16 pitchers who almost threw perfect games (ones where they face and retire every batter). Thirteen of them lost their perfect game while facing the very last hitter. In 2010, Armando Galaraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his when an umpire blew a call. Three pitchers successfully shut down all 27 batters over nine innings, the usual length of a game, but are not credited with perfect games because extra innings did them in. Of these cases, the most distressing is the best-pitched game of all time, in which Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitched 12 flawless innings in 1959, before faltering. His effort was first recorded as a perfect game, but years later baseball’s Committee for Statistical Accuracy decided to re-categorize it as imperfect. Brooklyn Dodger fans were similarly harsh with Ralph Branca, a fine pitcher, after he gave up the famous home run to the New York Giants’ Bobby Thomson, by which the Giants topped the Dodgers for the 1951 National League pennant. For the rest of his life Branca was remembered for his mistake. He once said that “A guy commits murder and gets pardoned after 20 years. I didn’t get pardoned.” We can thank God for being far more merciful than baseball. In fact, we do so today on Divine Mercy Sunday, which reminds us of the importance and necessity of going to Confession in its Gospel passage, which contains the verses the Church has always seen as Jesus’s creation of the Sacrament of Penace: Jn 20, 21-23. The sacrament is the Church’s treasured gift that answers a prayer of Bertram of Le Mans, a medieval bishop who asked God to show mercy to sinners in well-chosen words: “May God, through the wide-handed grace of His pity, grant some kind of amnesty.” The Sacrament of Penance is our ever-present chance to begin again, if we have ruined our friendship with God. Amy Guiliano expressed this very beautifully when she wrote that

Accepting the pain and brokenness we bring him, he tranfsorms our deepest wounds into our souls’ most distinctively beautiful features. As Augustine says, “I gazed into my deepest wound and was dazzled by your glory.”

This Sunday afternoon, from 1:30 to 3:00, we have a chance to reflect on the Divine Mercy, to hear Father Roy preach about it, and to go to Confession to experience its joyful results.

Msgr. David Hubba

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own….” ACTS 4:32 All that we are and all that we have is a gift from God! Think of your family, your friends, your talents, your abilities and your money—these are all gifts from God. We aren’t really owners of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has blessed us with.
