The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Exodus 17:3-7 This story from Exodus reveals that the Israelites, after their escape from Egypt, cast all blame for their sufferings on Moses. In this instance, they were dying of thirst. When Moses appealed to the Lord, the Lord directed Moses to strike a rock and water would gush forth. Second Reading: Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 Paul reminds the Romans that because Christ died for all people, they are acceptable in God’s sight. Gospel: John 4:5-42 Jesus converses with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well. When Jesus indicates that whoever drinks from the water He gives will never be thirsty again, the woman immediately answers, “Give me this water, sir...”. Jesus then reveals that she has had five husbands and tells her that He is the Messiah. The woman believes Jesus and proclaims this news to all the townspeople, who believe her and come to see Jesus.

St. John’s Family Page

We know that water is essential for life. God created us with a built-in mechanism in our body, when we get thirsty, we know it’s time to consume water or other liquids. In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks about another built-in mechanism, which we could call a spiritual thirst. Only God can satisfy this thirst. St. Augustine describes this thirst for God. “Our hearts are made for God, and they will not rest, until they rest in God.” So it is not a thirst of the body, but of the soul. …whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. In the first reading from the Book of Exodus, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “Why did you every make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock?” God satisfies their thirst. He tells Moses: Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink. We see that the people experience physical thirst and respond with ingratitude and lack of trust in God. Oh, that today you would hear his voice: “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, where your fathers tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works” (Ps95:8-9) Only God can satisfy all of our true needs. Lent is a time to reflect on what may be taking the place of God at the center of our lives.

St. Paul in his letter to the Romans writes about how much God loves us. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. We are called to witness to God’s great love for us through living a life of love and service. The woman at the well in today’s gospel in her encounter with Jesus Christ, experiences a growth in faith and a conversion of the heart. She becomes a disciple. Many more began to believe in him because of his word, and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.” May we too experience a conversion of the heart that leads to bringing others to Jesus! God bless us all always! Deacon Mike

Bereavement Support Group The Bereavement Support Group, which meets here at St. John the Apostle provides for a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required.

Children’s Liturgy The Children’s Liturgy will be held at the 10:30 AM Mass. Families with children should just come to Mass as you normally do. Children will have their own Liturgy of the Word, including a special teaching just for them! Volunteer teachers are needed. If interested, please contact Deacon Mike: [email protected] 732-388-1253

St. John the Apostle Rosary Altar Society March 2020

Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us!The Rosary is prayed at our parish each Monday before 7 p.m. Mass;

each Saturday after 8:30 a.m. Mass; and each Thursday before or after the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

Raise Your Sword and Hold Fast Your ShieldWe are all called to take part in the spiritual battle

of today. Luckily, we have been given the rosary to beour sword and the scapular to be our shield against evil.

It took centuries to develop the rosary as we know it today. In the 3rd century, people used small stones or beads to keep track of saying 150 psalms in a row called the psalter. In some countries, such as Ireland, it was hard to learn the psalms in Latin so the Our Father replaced the psalms. It was cumbersome to carry around a string of 150 beads so it was changed to a string of 50 beads to be prayed three times. This string of beads were called paternoster (meaning Our Father in Latin) beads.

There were orders of monks called the Cistercians and the Carthusians who began to interpret the psalms in a Marian way (pertaining to Mary). Instead of 150 Our Fathers they prayed 150 Hail Marys. This was only the first half of the Hail Mary (which is in the Bible) stating the greetings of the Angel Gabriel to Mary at the Annunciation and Elizabeth to Mary at the Visitation. To break the monotony one Our Father was placed before each decade (10) of Hail Marys. It was called the Marian Psalter (Mary's psalms).

In the 13th century, St. Dominic prayed and fasted for 3 days to obtain help to fight the Albigensian Heresy. Blessed Mother appeared to him and taught him to “preach” the Marian Psalter. It had been prayed to honor Mary, now it was used to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary. In doing this, it had the power to change people’s hearts.

Blessed Alan de la Roche used to adorn an image of Mary with roses when he said the Marian Psalter. After he became a Franciscan monk he could not go out and get roses. Each time he said a Hail Mary a rose would come from his mouth. After each decade, the roses would form into a wreath and crown Mary. So it became known as the Franciscan Crown Rosary where rosaries are a way of spiritually crowning Mary with roses. Five decades of the rosary became known as a chaplet which means small roses.

The Dominicans wanted the rosary to imitate the breviary (daily prayers said by priests) so they ended each decade with a Glory Be. The Cistercian monksend their day with the Hail Holy Queen at night so they added this to the end of the rosary.

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!

The 14th century brought about the Black Plague killing many people which inspired the second half of the Hail Mary we recite today. It was a comfort to the people that help would come NOW and for all the people who died especially from the Black Plague.

The rosary in the second half of the 14th century was forgotten. It was a time of conflict in the church where there were even three men claiming to be pope. In England, this was not the case. The Dominicans brought the rosary to England. There the Apostle’s Creed was added to the beginning of the rosary. Rosary beads became so important that they were included in wills and streets were named after them. It became part of the Dominican habit to wear the beads on the left side of their waist where a sword would have been worn. If you could not get to Mass, you were told to say the 15 decades of the rosary.

The Fatima prayer was added to the rosary after Mary appeared in Fatima. Pope John Paul II added the mysteries of light (luminous) because they shed light on who Jesus is to make 20 decades for the complete rosary. ~ Anne Conaty

THE BOOK CORNER The Secret of the Rosaryby St. Louis De Montfort contains everything that can be said about the rosary. He warns us of people who regard the rosary as something of little importance.” The rosary is a priceless treasure which is inspired by God.”
