EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
APRIL 20, 2014
Page Two Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
April 20, 2014
This Lamb is Christ who redeems and reconciles to God the Father the sheep who have strayed. The connection between Passover and the Day of Atonement is clearly here. According to Jewish tradition, on the day of Atonement, the chief priest would select two goats and a ram. One goat was set apart for God. The other goat - - called the “scape goat” - - was burdened with the sins of the whole community. It was driven out to the desert . The other goat was sacrificed. The ram, which was unblemished, was then offered up to remove the sins of God’s people. Jesus, our Lamb of God, takes away the sins of the world through the Sacri-fice at Calvary. In the Easter Mystery, we see re-alized Jesus’ promise: “I have come not to abolish the Law, but fulfill it.” The theology of the Victimae Paschali celebrates Passover in a “fulfilled” sense.
Death and life have contended In that combat stupendous: The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal
Sinners are not only cleansed and redeemed, they are given a “Promised Land” above and beyond this world. It is a new life that will endure forever! The beauty of our Catholic heritage is reflected in the magnificent Easter Sequence. The Victimae Paschali makes the celebration of the Resurrection not a dim memorial of the past, but a vibrant testi-mony of a truth present NOW and in Eternity. A Blessed Easter! -Fr. Luczak
EASTER:
The Passover - Atonement
A lamb the sheep redeemeth: Christ, who only is sinless,
Reconcileth sinners to the Father! College English majors are often surprised to learn that modern drama - - Theatre as we know it - - was “born” in Church. Its “birthday” is Easter! “Quem QuaeritIs?” “Whom do you seek?” is a trope, possibly from the 9th century, that dramatiz-es the story of the three Marys and their dialogue with an angel at the sepulcher. Tropes were alter-nating chants or “amplifications” of passages from the Liturgy. The Sequence for Easter Sunday, the Victimae Paschali, is often sung as a hymn with a familiar tune, but it has the “potential” to be a me-dieval trope. Composed by a priest, Wipo of Bur-gundy, in the 11th Century, the Victimae Paschali has been called “a dramatic dialogue between Mary Magdalene and the Church.” Traditionally, the chant melody was divided into parts for women, men, boys and full choir. When the chant is per-formed in this way it has a profound effect. Medi-tating on the text reveals a “double edge” to the Paschal Mystery. The Victimae Paschali de-scribes a convergence and completion of the most important Jewish Festivals - - Passover and the Day of Atonement. At the center of the conver-gence - - the reason for it - - is the Lamb of God. The Lamb of God is the “Victim” slain and the Vic-tor King, ever reigning.” This recalls the unblem-ished lamb sacrificed on the first Passover night. By the blood of that lamb, the Angel of Death “passed over” the faithful of Israel. But there is an-other dimension to the Easter Lamb.

Victimae Paschali
Let Christians offer sacrificial Praises to the Passover victim. The lamb has redeemed the sheep; The Innocent Christ has reconciled the sinners to the Father. Death and life contended in a spectacular battle: the Prince of life, who died, reigns alive. Tell us, Mary, what did you see on the road?
“I saw the tomb of the living Christ and the glory of his rising, the angelic witnesses, the clothes and the shroud.”
“Christ my hope is arisen; into Galilee, he will go before his own.” [Happy they who bear the witness Mary’s word believing above the tales of Jewry deceiving.] We know Christ is truly risen from the dead! To us, victorious King, have mercy! Amen. [Alleluia.]
Notes from your Parish Pastoral Council The Parish Pastoral Council met on Thursday evening 3/27. The following topics were discussed. • “To Teach Who Christ Is” campaign – reviewed outcome of committee meeting on 3/20. Planning is progressing

EASTER GRACE
Creative God and Lord of Life, You who call forth from the darkness of death all those who love You,
we rejoice, on this Easter Sunday, in the resurrection from the dead of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Visit our home and this table with Your bright blessing of
peace and life. We pause in the midst of this prayer to remember all the holy dead of our family who live
now in You and who await the final and glorious resurrection of the dead.
May they and we, because of our faith in You, our God, taste in the victory of life over death. May the
Risen Christ, our Lord and Savior, be our guest as we celebrate His resurrection with this Easter Sunday
dinner. Bless those whose work to prepare this meal has truly been a work of prayer, and bless all of us who shall share it with Easter love and joy. May
You, then, bless this table and this food, and each of us in Your holy name: Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. Amen. Alleluia! (from Fr. Edward Hays, c1979)
We wish you and your families a
Joyful and Blessed Easter!

THE FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY: APRIL 27 In 1931 Our Lord appeared to Sr. Faustina Kowalska in a vision and gave her the mission of spreading His message of Mercy to the whole world. Jesus said to her: “Paint an image according to the pattern you see with the signature: `Jesus, I Trust in You’ -- `Jezu, Ufam Tobie.’ This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of My tender mercies (420…) It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shel-ter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fountain of My mercy (600).” On the first Sunday after Easter 2000, Blessed Pope John Paul II announced that Sister Faustina was to join the ranks of Saints. On that same day the Pope formally announced that the Sunday after Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. (And it will be on Divine Mercy Sunday 2014 that Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Pope John Paul II and Blessed Pope John XXIII and they will also join the ranks of Saints!) We will celebrate The Feast of Mercy beginning with the Noon Mass next Sunday, April 27th. It will be followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 3 p.m. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 2-3 p.m. with confessions being heard in English and Polish. The Chaplet of Divine mer-cy will be prayed in English, Polish and Tagalog at 3 p.m. and conclude with Benediction. All are invited to observe the end of the Octave of Easter with praise and thanks to God for His Divine Mercy. Booklets for the Divine Mercy Novena, which began on Good Friday are available at the doors of the Church TODAY. Please join in praying this novena which our Lord also entrusted to St. Faustina.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
TO THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY
We give thanks for the generous food donations to our pantry that were left on the steps of the rectory and placed in the food donation bin located near the entrance to the Holy Family Room. We also give thanks to the guests at the St. Joseph Table who were so generous with their contributions, to those who contributed through our alms boxes, and to the continued support of our Men’s Club. During Holy Week, we distributed 18 Easter dinners to needy families. Each family received a spiral sliced ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls and a pie for dessert. We were able to share our bounty thanks to your continued support. We are so grateful for your help!
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me. Matthew 25: 35-36

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Lenten journey is now complete, its mission of renewal and preparation to receive new life fulfilled. The call to worship the Risen Lord has been received, and we gather to experience together the consoling presence of Christ in word and sacrament. We are at our best today, crowded and cramped to be sure, but the fullest sign of who were are meant to be. Christ has claimed us in the waters of baptism, we have acquired wonderful companions, and together we can accomplish great things. This is the day for rekindling the old flames of baptismal commitment, so we light the paschal candle, and by its light we make yet again the ancient promises to reject evil’s grip and empty promises. Today we do not recite the Creed, but respond with one voice to ageold questions. New life has to be nurtured, both the life of the newly baptized and the renewed life of those who have passed through Lent’s refining prayer, fasting, and giving alms. At any Mass during the next fifty days, you may be surprised by grace and splashed by water! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
“What do you know?” is the question linking all three readings today. Imagine the shock waves that shot through the city of Jerusalem that first Easter morning. Jesus’ body was missing! By the time Peter spoke the words found in today’s first reading, fifty days had passed, so he began by saying, in effect, “I take it you know what has been reported all over Judea about Jesus of Nazareth.” Of course they knew by then, but in today’s Gospel we are taken back to the first day. We meet Mary Magdalene exclaiming, “We don’t know where they put him!” What do we know? In the second reading Paul asks, “Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough?” Do we know the power of our own faith? Do we know the effect we can have on others? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
