For varying and valid reasons the new reformed liturgical Calendar of the Church has suppressed many names of ancient mar-tyrs In exchange this feast has been inserted into the Calendar on the day following that of Sts Peter and Paul in honor of the first martyrs of the Church of Rome who were put to death at the Vatican Circus at the time of the persecution under Nero (in the year 64)

Whatever was the real cause of the conflagration which erupted within the confines of the Palatine and the Celius and ravaged the city for six days and seven nights the wicked Emperor elected to hold Christians responsible for it-most of them slaves en-franchised and foreign The cruelty and injustice of the ensuing repression which had the victims torn to pieces by wild beasts or burned like living torches eventually evoked the indignation of pagans such as Tacitus The feast of these Christian martyrs had been celebrated on June 27 in Rome from 1923 on

PRAYER God You consecrated the copious firstfruits of the Roman Church with the blood of Martyrs Grant that we may be strengthened in virtue by the agony of such a struggle and always rejoice in their victory Amen

FIRST MARTYRS OF THE CHURCH OF ROME June 30

My dear parishioners

In our gathering to celebrate the Lordrsquos Day we also commemorate the Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist The

holy Prophet Forerunner and Baptist John is highly venerated in the Diocese of Paterson for he is the Patron Saint of the Dio-

cese as well as the one for whom our Cathedral Church in Paterson is named The placement of this feast in the liturgical cal-

endar is significant Johnrsquos birth is 6 months and 1 day before the birth of Christ all signs that he was the one who came be-

fore the Lord Jesus to prepare for His coming Also this is the time of year when the summer solstice occurs and the days

begin to decrease in sunlight only to be reversed at the winter solstice near the Birth of Christ This is a reminder of Saint John

the Baptistrsquos words recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 3 verse 30 ldquoHe must increase but I must decreaserdquo

The Gospel of Luke chapter 1 verses 39 speaks to us about the second mystery of the Most Holy Rosary the Visitation of the

Blessed Virgin Mary to her relative Elizabeth The Gospel tells us that after the Angel departed from Mary she proceeded to

Elizabeth The Virgin Mary travelled from Nazareth located north in Galilee to Ein Karem located south in Judea a distance

of about 100 miles This journey for a pregnant woman was not an easy one

This Gospel states how the unborn child John the Baptist rejoices when the unborn Christ Child who is within the womb of

the Mother of God approaches These two babies will challenge the world and become signs of life to the proponents of

death The Prophet John will testify to the coming of the Lord and the need for preparedness through repentance for sin The

Lord Jesus the Only Begotten Son of God will be crucified for sinners and through this sacrifice bring eternal life to all those

who trust in Him Yes these two unborn babies one who is God and the other who is his messenger will bring hope to a dy-

ing world

How appropriate it is that we should today have an opportunity to rally around LIFE through the 2020 PROJECT Represen-

tatives of the pro life cause will briefly address us at all Masses asking for our support in the cause of life the cause which

rings out in todayrsquos celebration of the Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist The Catholic Church is committed to the

cause of life and its protection from conception to natural death Your pro life stand is a sign of your faith Pro choice is

pro death Christ came to give life but it is the devil that supports death Our gratitude and best wishes to Father Pawel as he begins his new pastoral assignment at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on

East Main Street May the Lord richly bless him

And God bless you too

And God bless you too

cese as well as the one for whom our Cathedral Church in Paterson is named The placement of this feast in the liturgical cal-

endar is significant Johnrsquos birth is 6 months and 1 day before the birth of Christ all signs that he was the one who came be-

fore the Lord Jesus to prepare for His coming Also this is the time of year when the summer solstice occurs and the days

begin to decrease in sunlight only to be reversed at the winter solstice near the Birth of Christ This is a reminder of Saint John

the Baptistrsquos words recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 3 verse 30 ldquoHe must increase but I must decreaserdquo

Lord Jesus the Only Begotten Son of God will be crucified for sinners and through this sacrifice bring eternal life to all those

who trust in Him Yes these two unborn babies one who is God and the other who is his messenger will bring hope to a dy-

ing world
