St. Bruno Parish is a mul -cultural community, founded in 1912, that welcomes everyone to worship God, especially through the Holy Eucharist and Perpetual Adora on, to grow in the faith and to serve the less fortunate in order to be light and truth for others.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Coro de hombres En el verano de 1980, el p. Dominador Fernández, SVD, entonces párroco de la Iglesia de Santa Catalina de Tayum, mi ciudad natal, convocó a una reunión de los líderes de la comunidad con el propósito de formar un coro parroquial. La mayoría de los que asistieron fueron maestros. Ahora, uno pensaría que dado que son educados, la reunión sería fácil y sin problemas. No era el caso; Todos querían ser líderes. También había hombres, en su mayoría pescadores y trabajadores de la construcción. Cuando sintieron que la reunión no iba a ninguna parte, decidieron separarse y for‐mar su propio grupo. Lo llamaron el Coro de Hombres. Encantado de tener un coro, el p. Dominador les asignó la misa del domingo a las 6 de la mañana. Había quince de ellos cuando comenzaron y estos hombres cumplieron fiel‐mente su parte, dirigiendo el canto en la misa del domingo por la mañana. Esto lo hicieron durante muchos años hasta más tarde, cuando hubo más coros de la parroquia que se turnaron con ellos. Ahora, solo lo hacen el primer domingo del mes. Los miembros del coro no pretenden ser cantantes y músi‐cos talentosos. No obstante, tienen voces de tenor, barí‐tono y bajo acompañadas de violín, trompeta, guitarras y ukelele. Su canto tiene un ritmo lento distintivo al que mu‐chos se apagan, encontrándolo seco y sin vida. Sin embar‐go, para algunos, especialmente las personas mayores, la misma música es fácil de escuchar y propicia la medita‐ción. Cantan desde el corazón. Este es el coro que cantó en mi ordenación en 1983. Han pasado cuarenta años y todavía están juntos. Algunos de los miembros originales fallecieron y los más jóvenes tomaron su lugar, pero muchos todavía están allí. Ahora están en sus 80 años. ¿Qué los mantiene en marcha? Ellos aman lo que hacen. No, la mejor respuesta es que encuen‐tran satisfacción en ello. No cobran por su servicio incluso si se les pide cantar en bodas, funerales y otros eventos. Su único propósito es atraer a los hombres a la misa dominical y sus testimonios dan fe de los beneficios de la asistencia a la misa dominical: paz y alegría del corazón; salud y bie‐nestar general, protección y seguridad divinas, fe más pro‐funda en Dios. Durante mis vacaciones en casa, los reuní, les recordé que se están haciendo viejos y que ¿no sería bueno que su can‐to se conservara para la posteridad? Ellos estan de acuerdo. Ensayaron cinco canciones y arreglé la grabación en el es‐tudio de la estación de radio DZPA, propiedad de la iglesia (que, por cierto, celebró su 50 aniversario el último día de San Valentín). También grabé el mismo video y lo subí a YouTube para que las personas a las que les gusta verlos, simplemente puedan conectarse a Internet. *** Las cenizas que se imponen en nuestras frentes el Miérco‐les de Ceniza son de las palmas bendecidas del Domingo de Ramos del año pasado. Las palmas se quemarán y las cenizas se recogerán para ser utilizadas el Miércoles de Ceniza, lo que señala el comienzo de la Cuaresma, la tem‐porada de penitencia, limosna y oración. Tenga en cuenta que el Miércoles de Ceniza es un día de ayuno y abstinen‐cia.

Men’s Choir In the summer of 1980, Fr. Dominador Fernandez, SVD, then parish priest of St. Catherine Church of Tayum, my hometown, called for a meeting of the community leaders for the purpose of forming a parish choir. Most of those who attended were teachers. Now, one would think that since they are educated, the meeting would go smooth and easy. It was not the case; everyone wanted to be a leader. There were also men, mostly fishermen and construction workers. When they sensed that the meeting was going nowhere, they decided to split and form their own group. They called it the Men's Choir. Delighted to have a choir, Fr. Dominador assigned them the 6AM Sunday mass. There were fifteen of them when they started and these men faithfully fulfilled their part, leading the singing at the early Sunday morning mass. This they did for many years until later, when there were more choirs of the parish who took turn with them. Now, they do only the first Sunday of the month. The members of the choir don’t’ claim to be gifted singers and musicians. Nonetheless, they have tenor, baritone and bass voices accompanied with violin, trumpet, guitars and ukulele. Their singing has a distinctive slow tempo to which many are turned off, finding it dry and lifeless. To some, however, especially older folks, the same music is easy to listen to and conducive to meditation. They sing from the heart. This is the choir that sang at my ordination in 1983. It’s been forty years and they are still together. Some of the original members have passed away and younger ones have taken their places but many are still there. They are now in their 80’s. What keeps them going? They love what they do. No, the better answer is they find fulfillment in it. They don’t charge for their service even if asked to sing at wed‐dings, funerals and other events. Their sole purpose is to draw the men to Sunday mass and their testimonies attest to the benefits of Sunday mass attendance: peace and joy of the heart; health and general well‐being, divine protection and safety, deeper faith in God. During my home vacation, I gathered them together, re‐minded them that they are getting old and wouldn’t it be nice if their singing would be preserved for posterity? They agreed. They rehearsed five songs and I arranged for the recording in the studio of the church‐owned DZPA radio station (which, by the way, celebrated its 50th anniversary last Valentine’s Day). I also videotaped the same and up‐loaded it to YouTube so people who like to watch them, can simply plug in to the Internet.

*** The ashes that are imposed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are from the blessed palms of last year’s Palm Sunday. The palms will be burned and the ashes will be collected to be used on Ash Wednesday, which signals the beginning of Lent, the season of penance, almsgiving and prayer. Kindly be reminded that Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence.

Catechism Corner by Kacey Carey , DRE Lent is all about letting go of the non essentials. Shedding unnecessary time wasters, added luxuries and indulgences. Like Jesus we want to start Lent in the desert, releasing the entrapments that keep us distracted . We want to focus more on God and what He is asking of us than on living life as usual. Keeping things as they have always been , maintaining the status quo does not help us grow. Metanoia ( changing our hearts) starts with stripping off non essentials. Of course we can always give up sweets, fast a couple of days a week and donate to our favorite charity. We can decide to give food to the homeless, pray the rosary and sacrifice little things. These things we probably do year round. But what about adding to our regular patterns? What about starting a novena to St.Joseph in reparation for the sins against the church, the abuse victims and the priesthood? What about praying in front of the abortion centers, making ourselves a living witness of forgiveness and mercy? What about vowing to become a daily communicant, attending mass daily in reparation for all those who do not attend mass? What about requesting Gregorian masses for ourselves and deceased love ones? What about volunteering to help in our religious ed programs ? Giving our time is more important than giving money because we become living witnesses using our bodies to fulfill God's plan for serving Him. "The sun penetrates crystal and makes it more dazzling In the same way the sanctifying Spirit indwells in souls and makes them more radiant. They become like so many powerhouses beaming grace and love around them."

La Cuaresma se trata de dejar ir lo no esencial. Derramando pérdidas de tiempo innecesarias, lujos adicionales e indulgencias. Al igual que Jesús, queremos comenzar la Cuaresma en el desierto, liberando las trampas que nos mantienen distraídos. Queremos centrarnos más en Dios y en lo que Él nos pide que en vivir la vida como siempre. Mantener las cosas como siempre han sido, mantener el status quo no nos ayuda a crecer. Metanoia (cambiando nuestros corazones) comienza con la eliminación de lo no esencial. Por supuesto, siempre podemos renunciar a los dulces, ayunar un par de días a la semana y donar a nuestra organización benéfica favorita. Podemos decidir dar comida a las personas sin hogar, rezar el rosario y sacrificar pequeñas cosas. Estas cosas probablemente las hagamos durante todo el año. ¿Pero qué hay de agregar a nuestros patrones regula-res? ¿Qué hay de comenzar una novena a San José en reparación por los pecados contra la iglesia, las víc-timas de abuso y el sacerdocio? ¿Qué hay de rezar frente a los centros de aborto, convirtiéndonos en testi-gos vivos del perdón y la misericordia? ¿Qué pasa con la promesa de convertirse en un comunicante diario, asistiendo a misa todos los días en reparación para todos aquellos que no asisten a misa? ¿Qué hay de solicitar masas grego-rianas para nosotros y seres queridos fallecidos? ¿Qué pasa con el voluntariado para ayudar en nuestros pro-gramas de educación religiosa?
