In case you’re wondering what bearing the mystery of the Trinity has on our lives, it is worth remembering that the scriptures tell us we are children of God the Father who cares for us, that in Jesus Christ we have a brother who died for us and that in the Holy Spirit we possess a friend and comforter who strengthens and protects us. The Trinity is an invi-tation to discover and deepen the relationship between God and ourselves in the light of what the gospel tells us about His inner life. If we are made in the image and likeness of God, then surely we must strive to become like Him as much as is humanly possible. God is the deepest mystery of our lives and is infinitely more expansive than our tiny minds are capable of imagining. If we had been left struggling on our own to understand God, we could never have established that He is a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger and rich in kindness and faithfulness. Without the help of Jesus, how would we ever have known that as a community we are linked like a family of people to Him? If our behavior is to mirror the life of the Trinity, then the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit should govern our every word and ac-tion. From the moment we were baptized in “the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”, the three persons of the Trinity, we pledged to live our lives under Their pro-tection and to do everything in Their name so that, when life is over, we shall go to meet Them and live in Their company forever. Treasures from Our Tradition

Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are initi-ated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we re-cite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new be-liever was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immer-sions into the saving waters. Because every litur-gy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham’s hospitality to an-gels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit.

Debbie Northern will speak at all masses at St. Bernard church the weekend of June 22-23 to share her mission experience as part of the Mis-sionary Cooperation Plan 2019. The second col-lection will be taken to support Maryknoll Lay Missioners. Your kind welcome and generous support is most appreciated. Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic organiza-tion inspired by the mission of Jesus to live and work with poor communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, responding to basic needs and help-ing to create a more just and compassionate world. Confirmation for Young Adults We are very much aware of the fact that there are a growing number of young adults who were Bap-tized and who have made their First Communion but have not yet received Confirmation. Perhaps they were not available to do so when they were in High School, or other activities during those years caused them to leave the program uncom-pleted. Whoever you are, we would like to offer a special program or preparation for anyone who would like to complete their Confirmation Preparation this year and be confirmed in Oc-tober. If you, or a family member or friend would like to take advantage of this new program (which will be held in the Summer when college students are home), or if you would like more in-formation, please contact the Parish Office at 295-0387 or e-mail Fr. Jack at
