Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! On Tuesday of this past week, March 15, we Franciscan friars here at Old Mission Santa Barbara received notice of our upcoming assignments. It is our tradition that, following the election of our leadership at our triennial Chapter meeting, we re-evaluate all ministry assignments. Here is the information we have received:

Fr. Charles Talley ofm, Pastor, will be transferring to a new position as Director of Communications Outreach for the Franciscan friars (Province of St. Barbara). He will be living at San Damiano Retreat Center, Danville, California, and working out of the Franciscan Provincial Office in Oakland. Fr. Charles will be leaving Santa Barbara April 24.

Fr. Adrian Peelo, ofm, will become the new Pastor of St. Barbara Parish, effective May 1. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Fr. Adrian has been living and working in California for more than ten years. He is currently Chaplain at the St. Anthony Foundation, the Franciscans’ major outreach effort to the poor and homeless in San Francisco.

Fr. Larry Gosselin, ofm, will remain as Associate Pastor at St. Barbara Parish.

Brother Brian Trawick, ofm, will be leaving Old Mission Santa Barbara, effective April 1. He will be working as the Corporate Secretary for the Franciscan Friars of California, effective July 1, and will be moving to Oakland.

Brother Angelo Cardinalli, ofm, will be retiring as Guardian of the Franciscan community, effective March 31.

Brother Regan Chapman, ofm, will be assuming responsibilities as Guardian of the local fraternity, effective April 1.

We all know that change is not easy. For my part, I leave St. Barbara Parish and the Old Mission with a great deal of sadness in my heart. I cannot thank you enough for your welcome, your gracious hospitality and your friendship all through my nearly four years of ministry here. I feel truly blessed—and lucky!—to have come to know you and to be with you. You have been such great teachers and models of Christian life for me. Thank you for your deep commitment to the Lord, for your love of the Church, for your dedicated service—and for your tremendous patience with us friars!

I believe that the Parish is in very capable hands. Fr. Larry, ever ebullient and ubiquitous, will remain. Fr. Adrian is a gifted preacher, teacher, and liturgist—a good “fit” for the community. We have a Parish staff which is absolutely incomparable in terms of their gifts and deep commitment. And we have lay leaders—you yourselves!—who are the heart of the Parish and in so many ways the welcoming Presence of Christ to every person who comes to the Old Mission.

I hope to spend some time in the coming month to say “goodbye” to many of you in person. For now, all I can say is “thank you so very much!” and Godbless,

Fr. Charles Talley, ofm Pastor

PALM SUNDAY of THE PASSION OF THE LORD

Page 4 St. Barbara Parish March 20, 2016

Prepare for Next Sunday’s Liturgy

March 27 ~

Easter Sunday: Solemnity of the

Resurrection of the Lord

First Reading—Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen.

Responsorial Psalm—Psalm 118 This is the day the Lord has made;

let us rejoice and be glad.

Second Reading—Colossians 3:1-4 All who are baptized, set your hearts in heaven.

Gospel—John 20:1-9 Three witnesses: Mary, Peter and John;

each responds to the empty tomb.

Reflection on Next Sunday’s Liturgy of the Word

A ll the Gospels agree that women were the first to come to the tomb. Mary Magdalene is always mentioned among them. The scene symbolizes

a new creation brought about by the Resurrection of the Light of the world. The darkness suggests the darkness that covered the abyss before light first appeared. When Mary Magdalene sees the stone removed from the entrance, she runs to the disciples with the news that “the Lord has been taken from the tomb!” She saw him die a few days ago, and that prevents her from drawing any other conclusion. The two disciples run side by side to the tomb. Peter sees the burial cloth and the cloth that covered Jesus’ head, but he doesn’t know how to interpret what he sees. The other disciple, the one Jesus loved and the source of this account, is the first to understand the significance of the empty tomb: “The Lord has risen.” For John, all those who came to believe would be loved by Jesus and would love in return.

Keeping Our Children Safe Take a time out to communicate

Sometimes, kids need a place to go where they can say what they want, and they won’t be immediately punished or have to deal with a negative reaction. It’s important to make sure your child has such a space or time – after dinner conversations, an ice cream spot, riding home from school – where they can tell you what’s on their mind, good or bad, and you can just listen and discuss, without taking the instant parental approach. If your children feel safe talking to you openly, you are better equipped to notice and handle any red flags in their lives. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Modeling Good Communication,” email: [email protected].

Please contact Alex Turcios in the Parish Office for information on the parish’s Safeguard the Children Committee (682-4151 x118).
