our mission

As God’s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God’s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by

the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ.

MORNING PRAYERFridays at 8:15amIf you are looking for a meaningful discipline to add to your routine for Lent, you might want to consider Morning Prayer. We are meeting Fridays in the Chapel at 8:15am. Morning Prayer is an offshoot of the ancient Christian tradition of the Daily Office. The thirty minute service is usually lay led and consists of reciting psalms and prayers together. All are welcome.

We are saddened by the death of Mary Alice Barnhouse, who passed away on the evening of February 13, surrounded by family. A service will be held for her TODAY at 3pm at the Samarkand in the Mountain Room.Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

TRINITY LENTEN SERIESEmbracing Transition: Humanity at the CrossroadsSundays, March 31 and April 7 after the 10am service for one hour.During Lent we are exploring a journey into what Lee Van Ham, Director of Jubilee Economic Ministries, calls the “OneEarth Paradigm”—shorthand for the idea that in order to remain viable, humanity must embrace a new way of life that is sustainable by the resources of our one planet Earth. In this Sunday series, we will think together about what it would mean to live in the OneEarth Paradigm, and what we must do to achieve it, including:• The OneEarth Consumer: Weaning ourselves from the economics of perpetual growth, profit and greed, and embracing the simple elegance of enough (March 31).• Church and Spiritual Practices: Transitioning to a creation-centered spirituality/theology as an imperative in the coming age (April 7).

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION is an opportunity to make an honest inventory of our lives in order to be reminded of God’s love which sets us free through forgiveness. Contact The Rev. Elizabeth A. Molitors at [email protected] or 965-7419; The Rev. Judy Stevens at [email protected]; The Rev. Martha Siegel at [email protected]; The Rev. Colleen Sterne at [email protected]; The Rev. Michael Corrigan at [email protected].

EASTER FLOWER DECORATIONSIn celebration of Christ’s resurrection, you are invited to make a contribution—in memory of a loved one or in thanksgiving for some blessing in your life—toward the flowers that will decorate our church this Easter season. Envelopes marked “Easter Flowers” are in the pews, or you may send a check to the office with “Easter Flowers” noted in the memo line. Suggested donation is $20. Please print clearly.

take note

TODAY IN THE CHURCH SCHOOL Children at Trinity meet most Sundays for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program (CGS). Since each Level of the program covers a range of ages, often several lessons are offered each Sunday, with most children taking part in only one. Today Level I will work with the materials for the Last Supper and the City of Jerusalem, and continue work with the materials connecting Jesus’ image of the Good Shepherd with the celebration of Eucharist. Level II will do further work with the materials for the City of Jerusalem, work with materials depicting the parable of the Wolf and the Hireling, and reflect together on several Psalms focused on repentance. Level III will discuss the various images and possible meanings of elements in the Old Testament account of the Fall, and how these images are carried forward in the New Testament and the life of the Church.

A tremendous THANK YOU to the many people (nearly 100) who came together Saturday night, March 16th for our Intergenerational Dinner and Contra Dance hosted by Trinity’s Children and Youth Council. It was a joyful time with delicious gourmet foods and full participation in the dancing by ages 3 to 73. The way in which people connected and engaged with each other was gratifying; Elizabeth would have been “positively chuffed.” We are grateful for all the time, talent and treasure bestowed in her honor. A total of roughly $8,000 has been donated to date. To contribute to the fund, please make your check out to Trinity Church with E Hess Memorial Fund on the memo line, or contribute online, noting The Elizabeth Hess Memorial Fund.

GREAT NEWS! DINNER WITH FRIENDS IS RETURNINGAfter a few year’s hiatus, our popular Dinner with Friends program will be returning. We will be launching sign-ups on Sunday, April 7, and they will continue for three Sundays.

We hope that the dinner groups can begin meeting in early May. Dinner with Friends consists of 6-8 adults (singles, couples and families) who get together every 4-6 weeks for a meal and fellowship. They will meet for a total of three or four times. The members of each group take turns hosting the event and provide a main course, while the rest of the members bring the other food and beverages. All are welcome to sign up. There are no rules on where the groups can meet—a park, the beach, a restaurant. Children and newcomers are welcome. Please consider signing up even if you are not able to host. Please look for our sign-up table on Sunday, April 7 and feel free to contact Susan Krutzsch, 916-316-3407 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

TALKING TRASHThursday, April 4, 7-9pmFirst Presbyterian Church of SB21 E. Constance AvenueWhat should we do about the trash we produce and how we dispose of it? Every year, we bury around 200,000 tons of waste at the Tajiguas Landfill. Is this a problem? What does this mean for the future? The conversation is hosted by the Westmont Initiative for Public Dialogue and Deliberation, where we seek to elevate discussion on critical issues that matter in our community. The deliberative format invites citizens, not just experts or politicians, to come together to talk with each other, not past each other, to consider multiple points of view, to spark new ideas, and to make good decisions. We invite you to discuss with us. Seating is limited, so please RSVP by writing to [email protected].

holy week and easter 2019

From early times, Christians have observed the week before Easter as a time of special devotion. As the pilgrim Egeria recorded in the late fourth century, Jerusalem contained many sacred places that were sites for devotion and liturgy. Numerous pilgrims to the holy city followed the path of Jesus in his last days. They formed processions, worshipped where Christ suffered and died, and venerated relics. From this beginning evolved the rites we observe today on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. These services provide a liturgical experience of the last days of Jesus’ earthly life, as well as the time and events leading up to his resurrection.

The three Holy Days, or Triduum, of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday are at the heart of the Holy Week observance. Please join us—be part of the story—for all of the sacred richness of our Palm Sunday, Triduum, and Easter Sunday services.

April 14: Palm SundayWe remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem the week before his death.8am The Blessing of the Palms and Holy Eucharist.

10am The Liturgy of the Palms and Holy Eucharist. All who are able please assemble on the Labyrinth Plaza for the Blessing of the Palms and procession into the church for Eucharist. April 18: Maundy ThursdayOur celebration commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, and Jesus’ mandate to his disciples to show love through acts of humble service.6pm Agape Meal, Footwashing, Eucharist, Stripping of the Altar. Please gather in the Parish Hall for a simple, shared meal before moving to the church sanctuary for foot washing, Eucharist, and the stripping of the altar. See the sign-up chart by the Welcome Table to sign up to bring bread, cheese, olives, dried fruit, nuts, hummus, grapes, wine/grape juice to share with the people at your table.

April 19: Good FridayWe commemorate the trial and crucifixion of Jesus as we hear The Passion story, offer honor to the cross, and share communion from reserve sacrament.12 noon Good Friday Ecumenical Service at First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance Ave in Santa Barbara.

6pm Good Friday Liturgy, with veneration of the cross and communion from reserve sacrament. The principal liturgy of the day with choral singing of The Passion narrative.

April 20: Great Vigil of Easter9am Decorating of the Church. Everyone is welcome to help prepare and transform the sanctuary for our Easter Vigil and Easter Day liturgies. No experience necessary. Sign up at the Welcome Table.

7pm Great Vigil of Easter with festive reception to follow. This liturgy is the first celebration of Easter, rejoicing in Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Our service begins on the Labyrinth Plaza with the lighting of the new fire, symbolizing the light of Christ in the world.
