TRANSCRIPT
Message from the Principal It is with a heavy heart that I write this, my last newsletter comment. During my time at St Ambrose I have had the privilege to lead a school filled with amazing students who have the capability and talents to change the nature of the world we live in and staff equipped to support them in being prepared to do so. Have a wonderful summer, enjoy the opportunity for rest and family time and return refreshed in the new school year. A particular thank you to Mrs Keegan who has made sure that the newsletter is ready to run each week. Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer sea-son. Draw me closer to you this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen. J. M. Keulemans

Students were given a masterclass in the fundamental principles of Judaism when they visited the Hale Synagogue. As part of the school's objective to understand and embrace the beliefs and values of other faiths, boys have visited a synagogue, a mosque and a Sikh temple to learn from their elders. At the Shay Lane Synagogue, established over 40 years ago, they met one of the founders Sonia Lee and award winning educator Anne Rosenfield, who has been honoured for her work 'building bridges' in the local community. Anne, who together with her husband Harvey runs the synagogue tours, said: “We love meeting pupils from local schools and first give a brief synopsis of the synagogue's history and our culture and customs: We explain how all jewish people throughout the world, when praying, always face towards Jerusalem. The Hale Synagogue has one side decorated with stone from Jerusalem to remind the congregation of this. We explain why we eat in the Kashrut stye, what we wear and, of course, what we believe and out history.” Anne added: “However, each session is led by the pupils and their questions and what they want to know about Judaism.” Sonia Lee, who is one of the founder of the Hale and District Hebrew Congregation, which now numbers 650, added: “It's always important to learn from one another and be open and accepting and we believe the school visits are an important element of the Congregation's rich life.” St. Ambrose College Religious Education teacher, Marika Richardson, who coordinates their interfaith programme, said: “Anne and Sonia are two of Hale Barns' most wonderful and colourful characters who convey both the joy and commitment to God of local Jewish people to an audience eager to listen and learn.”
1st year students reflected on the debt they owe a previous generation of young men during their trip to the American Cemetery in Normandy. This year 150 boys undertook their own mini Normandy landings, but thankfully without the horrors of 1944. Accompanied by 15 teachers, they visit the Bayeux Tapestry and go to the island retreat of Mont St. Michel, but the most moving trip is “always to see white crosses of the war dead,” says French teacher Mr Howard. Mr Howard, whose has ben part of the trip for over 30 years, said: “The mood is always quiet, reflective but also questioning with boys commenting on the dates on the crosses and how one young man might have died on June 6 but another lasted a few more days. They appreciate these men were very young, indeed, could have been their older brothers, and that gives food for thought.” Mr Howard added: “The next day we go to see the German Mausoleum, a sombre some might say utilitarian building, which contains the ashes of even more young men than the Allies lost, but is raised above the ground so no German is buried on French soil. Again the mood is one of thoughtfulness and thanks their generation and generations since have so far been sparred the sacrifice.” Head of Languages and trip organiser Mr Toal said: “We speak French throughout the trip and it does help immensely with their language skills, but it is also an end of year celebration in which the boys come together and really begin to identify as Ambrosians.”

Work Placement
During the week starting 2nd July, I was luckily enough to do my work experience at the House’s of Parliament, working with old boy and now Government Whip Paul Maynard MP. Paul is the MP for the constituency of Blackpool North and Cleveleys, and it was truly a remarkable experience to be able to shadow him and work closely with his chief of Staff Simon Renwick who has played a pivotal role in Pauls success as a politician. My personal role was to aid Paul in various research tasks and to help plan several events that were taking place in the constituency. I was also extremely fortunate enough to tag along with Paul at a number of receptions including an event that celebrated the great work of the NHS on its 70
th Birthday-this let me really see the importance of
the social side of politics and how important it is to keep up strong relationships and even friendships with fellows MP’s. The week really opened my eyes to the reality of the hard work that the representatives of our country put in and definitely confirmed my personal goal of doing a degree in Politics at university and maybe even attempting to get into the political world one day myself.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults at St Vincent’s Church
Would you like to know more about what it means to be a Catholic?
You may have a Catholic partner, children at a Catholic school, or friends who are Catholics, and want to understand their faith/religion better, or you may be a returning Catholic wanting to re-discover your faith.
If yes, please come along to a ‘taster session’ taking place at Westleigh (Behind St Vincent de Paul’s Church, entrance off Groby Road) at 8pm on Wednesday 26
th September.
Before then, if you have any questions please contact Father John (0161 928 1689) or Deacon John (07973 375422).
Note: For those who wish to continue this journey of exploration, the group will meet weekly, guided by the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) Team. Topics such as the Bible, the Sacraments, the Mass, Prayer, and the life of the Church are explored with a brief introduction followed by questions and an open exchange. Every year, some enquirers decide they want to join, or become full members, of the Catholic Church.
Thank you so much for supporting SAPA’s fundraising throughout the school year. We hope you have a wonderful, fun-filled and sunny summer holiday. It’s back – the Scalextric Race Night! We have ideas to make it even better. And we really hope you can come, so please make a note of the date now and get ready to race! Jo McEntee SAPA Chair
