You should expect

On the spot quizzes

Random safety checks

Noncompliance

Progressive disciplinary action for safety infractions up to and including:

– Being relieved of your job on the team

– Exclusion from travel to the regional/national

– Dismissal from the team

Safety infraction by a member that shows serious lack of judgment and

places him or others at risk requires review by the mentors and can

result in immediate dismissal from the team

Team 1912 Shop Rules

Work Rules A mentor must ALWAYS be PRESENT and

SUPERVISING when a team member uses a power tool

If you don't know what you are doing, ASK

Always be dressed appropriately (e.g., long hair pulled

back, loose sleeves rolled up, no dangling jewelry)

If something goes wrong, notify a MENTOR immediately

Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) All tasks using tools will require safety glasses or goggles

Safety glasses are ALWAYS required in the shop area

Must wear closed toe and heel shoes at all times

Ear protection should be used as needed

Members use the buddy system, travel in pairs or larger groups

Arena Safety/Operation

Only essential personnel allowed in the arena area

Stay behind barriers

Follow directions from officials

Pit Safety

Eye protection at a minimum – Safety glasses are mandatory in all of the pit area, practice and playing areas, and anywhere signage is posted.

Glasses are ANSI approved, non-shaded

Keep the pit clean and organized

Mentors will provide hands-on training on the following:

Describe and identify the hazards associated with each

machine or power tool prior to members’ first use

Discuss the safeguards themselves and the hazards for

which they are intended to block and how they provide the

proper protection

Discuss how and under what circumstances safeguards

can be removed, and by whom (generally never by a

student)

Explain what to do and what action to take if a safety

incident occurs. Always report safety incidents no matter

how minor

Lifting

Lift carefully (with the knees, keeping your

head up)

Know where you're going with the robot

Wear gloves

Beware of sharp edges

When the robot is on the table, make sure that it

is secured and won't fall over or off the table

Watch out for stored energy

Electrical – make sure the robot is powered off

before you start working on physical electrical

connections

Pneumatics – make sure to release all

compressed air after each match and make sure

its all gone before you start messing with the

tubing

Mechanical – make sure that all springs are

relaxed and there is no chance of them

randomly releasing and potentially harming

someone

Batteries contain stored energy in the form of dangerous chemicals

– they contain sulfuric acid that can burn you

– they can rapidly heat and explode

Do NOT use a damaged or leaking battery

If a leak occurs, from the battery spill kit:

– Pour baking soda on spill

– Use gloves to put battery in the bucket

– Notify a mentor and seek medical attention as needed

– Use disposable scoop to transfer baking soda residue into

the bucket

– Properly dispose of battery and baking soda residue
