General Guidelines…
• Perform only the experiments you are given permission to do.
• Don’t touch anything until you are told to by the teacher.
• Never eat or drink in the lab.
Lab Courtesy
• Keep your work area clean
• Clean and put away all equipment
• Backpacks need to be off the floor
Chemicals • Keep your hands away from your eyes and mouth.
• If you get chemicals on your skin or in your eyes, rinse with water for at least 20 minutes.
Chemicals • Never take chemicals away from the lab area.
• Dispose of unused chemicals into the proper container.
Chemicals • Do not touch, taste or smell any chemical.
• If you are putting chemicals into new containers---label, label, label!!!
Equipment • If glassware breaks, do not pick it up…let the teacher know!
• Make sure your hands are dry before unplugging electrical equipment.
Equipment• If you do not know how
to properly use a piece of equipment—ask!!
• Make sure your glassware is clean.
Equipment • Do not rinse or wash hot glassware with water.
• Make sure the electrical cords are not frayed or loose.
Using Heat • Point the openings of test tubes towards the wall when they are being heated.
• If there is a fire drill, make sure all heat sources are turned off and all containers are closed.
Using Heat • Don’t look into containers being heated or touch them with your bare hands!!!
• Do not heat substances unless directed to do so.
• Never leave a heat source unattended.
Clothing• Contact lenses should not be
worn when chemicals are used.
• Goggles, aprons and gloves should be worn when necessary.
Clothing• Long hair must be tied back and
dangling jewelry and clothes secured.
• Shoes must cover all of your foot.
• Never apply makeup in a laboratory!!
