PPE When & Where You Need ItAt Superior Waterproofing, a specialty contractor for building restoration services, finding the best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each job a worker performs can be complex since each new job site presents its own challenges. Employees are assigned to different jobs in the field and can stay there anywhere from a few days to a few months. Each of these on-location jobs require different PPE—and that’s where Magid plays a significant role.

“We rely heavily on Magid’s help to provide us with a quick turnaround because our needs are constantly changing,” says agent safety consultant, Debbie Casey. “Quick PPE decisions are often necessary due to the nature of that specific job. We need a safety partner to mirror that urgency—and Magid does just that.”

Before each job begins, Superior Waterproofing goes through a pre-planning process where management and safety teams identify and create a plan to address any safety hazards that could arise. Once the plan is solidified, Casey contacts her Magid rep to line up PPE and assure that every employee on the job has what he or she needs to be protected.

“We always try to stay ahead of safety concerns,” says Casey. “We plan so we are prepared. While we do have some items in stock, we order PPE specific to each job. Even when we receive last minute jobs, I can call our Magid rep and he will have the right PPE delivered to the job site within 24 hours.”

While each job presents new challenges, one job in particular was in an unusual location and was very dangerous. Faced with some unique safety challenges, Casey needed to think and act quickly.

“This job was in a parking garage three stories underground without any type of ventilation system,” Casey explains. “Although we did all we could to prepare for this high-risk job, the unique nature of this job brought up a lot of unexpected needs after we started work. We needed different filters for the respirators, impact gloves for jackhammering and various other safety equipment to keep our employees safe. I had to think on my feet and solve issues in a timely manner.”

Throughout this challenging job, the team at Superior Waterproofing had to modify its needs daily based on conditions. Hot and humid weather conditions made this extremely difficult.

“The ventilation system in the garage was shot,” explains Casey. “We had to bring in fans to move air from outside down into the parking garage to keep fresh air flowing. We also came across large amounts of water on the lower levels and we had to pump water out of the garage—without gas because of the ventilation problem! This wasn’t one of those jobs that you could just put in your work day and go home—it was much more complicated than that.”

With employees working in such strenuous conditions, keeping on top of safety and making sure workers were as comfortable as possible was Superior Waterproofing’s top priority.

“We were constantly looking for ways to make it better for them and we wanted to make sure they knew we had their backs when it came to safety,” says Casey. “We had portable eyewash systems set up, provided new respirators that were lighter and easier to breathe through and stayed on top of gas monitoring.”

Magid also played a big part in supporting Superior Waterproofing’s employees. When Casey realized a significant amount of jack hammering was necessary for this job, she went to her Magid safety specialist for a solution

to deal with the high impact activity. Superior Waterproofing began using the TRX500 impact glove during this job. The company received a good deal of positive feedback from the workers on the job. The excellent support and protection the glove provided prompted Superior Waterproofing to add the TRX500 to its full-time PPE rotation.

“I relied heavily on our Magid safety specialist to get us what we needed in a timely manner,” says Casey. “I told him what we needed and he had the products to us within 24 hours—directly

to the job site. He was responsive and ensured that everyone had everything they needed to stay safe. I know I can count on my rep, which allows me to focus on other things. It was also great for morale with our employees, they knew we had them covered, which was critical during this hard, exhausting and high-risk job.”

Although the type of work the employees at Superior Waterproofing encounter varies day-to-day, having a safety partner like Magid ensures that the proper PPE is readily available.

Reduce Injuries Before Buying PPESchedule a Risk AssessmentRisk assessments are designed to help keep workers safe, standardize current PPE, improve compliance and reduce costs. During on-site assessments, a safety professional will analyze your company’s injury history and observe processes to qualify risk.

Identify Process ImprovementsReview your processes and look to eliminate steps that present unnecessary exposure to potential hazards. Magid safety experts strongly suggest looking at two areas of your processes:

u Administrative Controls | Can you streamline your process by placing one purchase order a month instead of placing multiple purchase orders and handling numerous invoices.

u Engineering Controls | Can you reduce the number of “touches”? Are you maintaining equipment and ensuring sharp edges on parts have been reduced or eliminated?

Create a Safety CultureSafety rules are only useful if they’re followed by employees – so include them in the process. Let employees participate in establishing the rules and regulations of your production facility. Make safety a complete team effort.

If we can improve comfort, we can improve safety.

Matt Block, director of health and safety services at Magid, discusses how to find the right balance of safety and comfort when choosing PPE and which improvements and changes can be made to keep PPE in focus day-to-day.

Q What is the number one thing employers look for in PPE? Comfortable PPE is always at the top of the list for both employers and employees.

Q Why do you think comfortable PPE is so important? Safety is a top priority, but it actually makes sense that comfort would be a top concern given the statistics on injuries. In almost every category, the most common cause for injuries was that the employee was not wearing PPE at the time of the injury.

Q If the PPE provided was more comfortable, do you think the employees would have been wearing it? In many cases, employees are injured because they remove their PPE to perform certain tasks. For gloves, comfort is one aspect but dexterity and tactile sensitivity are also critical for many of these applications. If the gloves don’t provide these traits, the worker is more likely to remove them when certain tasks need to be performed. However, technology has advanced to the point that some of the highest performing products for cut and abrasion resistance are also some of the thinnest, most comfortable products available.

Q What do most wearers look for when selecting PPE? In most cases workers tell me they use the particular device because “it offers the best protection for my job.” This may be true in some cases, but often times I find their choice is based on a wearer’s perception of which features make one item of PPE safer over another. Many employees feel the heavier or thicker the PPE is, the better the protection it affords.

This can be true for some hazards such as heat insulation, abrasion or impact, but it is often not the case when it comes to protecting against hazards such as cuts and abrasions.

Q How do these perceptions affect PPE choices employees make? Too often these choices lead to PPE that prevents the wearer from being able to perform all aspects of their job and can often lead to injury. For example, new technology in hand protection has reached the point that some of the highest performing cut resistant gloves are also some of the lightest weight products available and offer a much higher level of dexterity compared to many heavier alternatives such as leather gloves. The same comparisons are found in PPE categories such as head protection and FR clothing. Some of the lightest weight hard hats also have the highest ANSI rating for electrical protection and some of the most advanced FR fabrics are also some of the lightest and comfortable.

Q What should employers be most aware of when choosing PPE for certain jobs? It’s critical to know the hazards and select PPE that is best suited for those hazards. I encourage employers to work with a knowledgeable provider that can help them select PPE that strikes the balance between protection, comfort and affordability.

Q How involved should employees be in the PPE selection process? Training employees on the selection and application of these products is not only necessary due to regulatory requirements, it is also imperative to maximize the benefits of technology.

Employees working for Basic Energy Services face high risk situations every time they walk through the

company doors or onto a job-site. They are constantly working with heavy equipment and machinery, putting in long hours and are on the road for much of the job. In addition to basic PPE such as hard hats, safety glasses and steel-toed boots, these workers must also add flame resistant clothing, H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) gas monitors and fixed gas monitors to the mix.

“For us, some of the equipment that is required on a daily basis is hard to come by,” explains Nay. “We struggle to find the right size flame resistant (FR) jeans and other FR products. Being able to stock these hard-to-find items through ZIIP makes everything so much easier for our company. We have everything we need right at our fingertips.”

Since FR clothing and products are so important to the oilfield service industry, access to good-quality and high variety is a top consideration when choosing a supplier. Everything from shirts to jeans must be the best quality and be UL certified to NFPA 2112 standards.

“Magid offers a good supply of FR clothing for my workers,” explains Nay. “Not only do they have great customer

service, but my Magid rep understands our need for the best and safest equipment and I can count on the fact that whatever I receive from them will be in-line with these requirements. I know Magid’s standard is always just as high as mine.”

With these safety specifications, Nay knew when he learned about ZIIP, that it was the right choice for his company.

“I really liked the way Magid has it set up—it’s easy and affordable,” says Nay. “I think the main reason ZIIP has been so successful for us is that I’m the only one who handles it. I see everything that goes in and everything that goes out, so there are no questions about inventory or cost.”

Not only must Basic Energy’s PPE have the highest FR ratings, the products must also be able to stand up to extreme weather changes.

“We need to have the right clothing and gloves for every temperature readily available every single day in case of quick weather changes,” explains Nay. “We have to make sure we have PPE for both ends of the spectrum at all times and Magid helps us do this through ZIIP. Our employees like the products we get from Magid – they fit comfortably, keep them safe and are reasonably priced. It’s a win all around.”

Zero Investment Inventory Program (ZIIP)ZIIP is a customer managed consignment stockroom that allows for easily accessible PPE with no up-front costs – pay for PPE as it is used. A consignment program like ZIIP helps companies:

u Create inventory efficienciesu Optimized supply chain managementu Reduce administration costs

SAFETY MATTERS

ZIIP | Zero Investment Inventory Program

For Basic Energy Services, an oilfield service company working closely with drilling and fracking organizations, Magid’s Zero Investment Inventory Program (ZIIP) has made it possible for one location to service five branch locations in the North Dakota Bakken oilfield. Basic Energy Services is able to provide all workers at all locations with the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) using Magid’s comprehensive supply of safety items.

Using ZIIP to Stay on Top of Safety

I love knowing I’m not in this alone and I can always count on Magid to give me a helping hand when I need it. – Ray Nay, Basic Energy Services

“With Magid, we never have just one option for safety equipment,” says Basic Energy Services safety representative Ray Nay. “Our workers need so many different types of PPE every day and ZIIP helps me find what works best for our workers to meet their day-to-day needs. We are never missing any items. Magid is great about replacing everything when needed and keeping our stock current. That is a really important part of safety for us.”
