IntroductionHydrock is an innovative, forward-thinking, sustainable engineering firm that aims to be the best place to work in our industry, and a company where safety is a fundamental part of our business culture.

Our ethos is to create an enjoyable workplace, delivering work to the highest standards to clients, who similarly embrace safety as a priority.

safepeople With strong people values we realise that our people are the backbone of the company’s success. Hydrock wants to look after people both professionally and physically, as individuals and as site teams. We want safety to be second nature to our people.

Our aim is to have a work force which is motivated and engaged, and through this high level of commitment we are able to develop a commitment to what is important to us. As a business we make every effort to guarantee the safety of our employees. Health and safety has become embedded in the culture of Hydrock, and we ensure that each and every person has the correct safety information, instruction, training and supervision to carry out their tasks safely, correctly and efficiently.

Hydrock ensures that all our people are made aware of company policies and procedures so that safety continues to be second nature in daily working practices.

safesite Operating our sites at the highest levels of safety performance brings a responsibility to ensure safety is at the core of our site operations. We want to be recognised in the industry for the approach we take on our sites, offering the highest safety, operational and technical standards of site delivery, in line with all relevant regulations whilst remaining commercially competitive and adding value to our clients. From a safety perspective we do this through a focus on five key issues which are: safe access and egress; safe place to work; safe systems of work; safe plant and equipment, and safe handling and storage. Our health and safety system is OHSAS18001 accredited and underpins our works on site. The system is continually being improved and updated as we improve our capabilities and set our standards higher. This knowledge is shared and transferred to all staff so that all offices and sites alike are following the right Health and Safety procedures.

Operating safe sites requires our teams to work to the highest standards and Hydrock can only safeguard the safety of its employees and others who come onto our sites through the hard work and commitment of every individual, whether in an office or on site.

safehome Being safe at Hydrock has one simple aim: to ensure that that our people, and those who are affected by our activities, benefit from an incident-free environment, and can return safely home each day.

safety concerns or options which they have in regards to the works or other site wider issues. Following these discussions the working method, roles or responsibilities for undertaking a task may be reassigned or wider issues raised with the Health and Safety Department.

• Toolbox Talks Toolbox talks are delivered on a weekly basis by the Site Manager and are attended by all staff on site. They are delivered on relevant subjects to explain the topic, the hazards and controls which are to be observed. Following the Toolbox Talks, the Site Manager will ask all staff if there are any other safety concerns or issues which they want to discuss. As required, discussion topics will be taken forward from these discussions by the Site Manager and discussed at the Monthly Health and Safety Meetings, or directly resolved.

Training

Providing quality training, which meets the learning requirements of Hydrock staff, is of paramount importance in the development and maintenance of Safe People. Hydrock aims to ensure that training is not undertaken simply because it is desired by the industry, but because it provides good learning outcomes which prevent accidents and injuries.

Hydrock ensures that it assesses the training needs of all of its employees through the appraisal process which is completed at

six monthly intervals. Following this process, a comprehensive training list will be issued to the Training Department which will be delivered over the following six months.

Further to the new areas of training identified, the Training Department will also manage the achievement of minimum training standards as well as refresher and renewal training.

All training is booked with accredited training providers where available for the subjects being delivered and, following attendance on every course, a feedback form is issued by the Training Department to the candidate to ensure that the quality of the training is being maintained by the provider.

Where accredited training is not currently available for all tools, equipment and hazard awareness subjects which are encountered by Hydrock staff, the Training Department designs and writes training courses which are then edited and approved by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

safepeopleConsultation

A key part of the safepeople ethos, as well as an indicator toa good health and safety culture, is to ensure that the entireworkforce is engaged and involved in safety and is able tocontribute to the way in which safety is managed. Within thesafepeople | safesite | safehome initiative there is an emphasis placed on employee consultation, from director level down to the staff working on the ground.

Hydrock’s aim is to use the expertise and experience of all ofits staff to ensure that works are planned safely, but where it ispossible to improve safety of these works after planning, thisinformation is captured and then acted upon, both locally onthe project and then shared throughout the Hydrock Group. The methods of consultation consist of, but are not limited to:

• Monthly Health and Safety Meetings Every month, all of the regional and department directors attend a meeting to review the previous month’s health and safety performance and agree and discuss actions to be taken on health and safety issues. The agreed actions are then added into – or amendments are made – to the Health and Safety Management System and communicated to the company workforce.

• Operative Health and Safety Meetings These are held monthly on every live project and attended by a minimum of one employee from every sub-contractor on site and all Hydrock employees based on the site. At these meetings any health and safety issues, concerns or improvement ideas are raised by the workforce and recorded on a meeting record. Following this meeting the Site Manager will action all issues which they are able to on site and forward a copy of the recorded meeting minutes to the Health and Safety Department to allow the issues, concerns and improvement ideas to be included in the Monthly Health and Safety Meeting agenda.

• Daily Site Briefings Every morning, prior to any works being undertaken on the project, the Site Manager will deliver a Daily Site Briefing to all staff on the project. The works which are to be undertaken on that day are discussed and the risk, controls, roles and responsibilities are assigned. During this briefing the workforce are encouraged to discuss any Operatives’ health and safety meeting held on the Aberdovey project

Safety Award

Hydrock’s aim is to encourage and reward outstandinghealth and safety behaviour throughout the entire companyand all contractors we engage. One of the initiatives we useto recognise outstanding health and safety behaviour by amember of staff – or by a contractor working on a Hydrockproject – is the Health and Safety Award.

The Award is presented monthly to the person who hasgone above and beyond the health and safety expectationof the company, either on site or within the community. Therecipients of the award are nominated by the colleagues, linemanagers or directors to the health and safety department, which selects the most worthy nominee.

The award issue is publicised in Hydrock’s internal newsletterDid You Know, with a photo of the winner and a small storyabout why they received the Health and Safety Award. Did You Know is distributed to the entire company via email and hard copy.

Professional Accreditation

We strive to maintain a highly qualified, trained and motivatedworkforce and actively encourage and support continuedprofessional development (CPD). Recognising the critical parttraining plays in cultivating Safe People, Hydrock sets aside asignificant budget to facilitate CPD.

As further encouragement to our staff to pursue excellenceand develop their knowledge, we award bonuses to anyonewho achieves chartered membership of a professional bodywhile at Hydrock, presents at an external event or has an articlepublished in a technical journal, as well as paying membershipfees for a professional body of an individual’s choice.

Safety Bulletins and Safety Notices

Safety Bulletins and Safety Notices are issued by the Healthand Safety Department and either read or delivered in briefingform to all Hydrock employees. The Safety Bulletins and SafetyNotices aim to ensure that all persons working for the company– in any of its permanent or temporary premises – benefit fromhealth and safety learning opportunities which have occurred, aiming to prevent hazardous events before they reoccur inother areas of the company.

A Safety Bulletin will be written by the health and safetydepartment following a number of different events and thenissued to all active premises under the control of Hydrock. Theywill be issued to the administrator for those premises and thenfurther distributed. The Safety Bulletins will be written for:

• Any ‘near miss’ event which had the potential to cause significant harm

• Any accident where injuries were sustained• Any accident where there was damage to property

which could have resulted in significant harm• Industry alerts being issued on relevant subjects• The promotion of safety initiatives• Significant findings of a site audit

A Safety Notice is written to advise and bring attention to achange in company policy or procedures; these are normallyupdated following an incident or accident, findings of site audit

or inspection, as a result of changes to legislation, as a result ofdirector instructions, where best practice can be achieved, etc.

Safety Notices are issued using the same methodology as SafetyBulletins, but they will be issued along with the fully updatedprocedure or policy.

Ensuring this strategic method of health and safetycommunication is in place is used is of key importance toensuring that Hydrock’s staff are proactively informed of safetyissues, assisting them to be safepeople.

Qualifications and experience

Hydrock’s aim is to seek out and appoint appropriatelyqualified, trained and motivated personnel, with a genuinecommitment to providing high standards of safety for eachrole within the company. We ensure new employees haveeither achieved the desired benchmark qualifications relevantto their position or are committed to achieving them onceemployed by Hydrock.

Hydrock has achieved an industry-leading employee retentionrecord of 98% for the past four years and has establishedemployee retention as one of four key performance indicatorsused to measure the company’s success. This allows investment into the workforce to be made with confidence, knowing thatthe investment which is made into our employees today willhelp to create safe people, safe sites and send our peoplehome safe every day.

Hydrock operates a competence standards policy whichsets out the minimum requirements of qualifications andtraining required for each position within the company;these Hydrock standards are set above industry requirementsand legislative requirement.

At stage one for any new starter’s employment, trainingwill be arranged to ensure that they meet these minimumstandards, attending courses in occupational and healthand safety subjects.

Following the achievement of the competence standardsand following either the employee’s annual or interimappraisal, higher training requirements will be set and thendelivered by Hydrock. This process will continue throughoutan individual’s employment.

Hydrock also puts considerable significance on a worker’s experience of undertaking the tasks and projects required of them. As a project team is put together, the work, environment, plant, machinery, working methods and likely hazards which will be encountered will be assessed. The team will be selected on the basis of the experience of the staff in managing and working with these factors on previous projects, while ensuring that new members of the project team are introduced to provide a learning opportunity for new and inexperienced staff. When new employees join Hydrock they are to be mentored bytheir line manager for a three month period to ensure that they:

• Have the support and resources required to achieve• Are familiar with the system and procedures operated

by Hydrock• Have adequate support• Can achieve the tasks requested of them.

Following the mentoring process, the new employees willbe assessed and if they are not ready to take on the fullresponsibilities of their position, their mentoring period willbe extended to ensure that they have the support needed.

Safety Documentation

Safety Documentation is a key tool used to produce a safesite. It requires the method of controlling all site-based andwork-based hazards to be identified and a written plan putinto place to control them.

The Safety Documentation is also used to communicate tothe workforce the working controls and systems for controlwhich have been put into place, ensuring all have beentrained in the site rules, procedures and work tasks beforeundertaking work on site.

The principal site safety documentation which is putinto place to manage safety on each Hydrock project is:

• Construction Phase Plan – this document contains the overall site plan for safety. It details the works to be undertaken, identifies the hazards associated with those works and puts into place the overview of the control measures to be used to contain them to an acceptable level.

• Site Safety Induction – this document is a breakdown of the construction phase plan which is to be delivered to all staff prior to them being allowed unescorted onto site. It explains the rules, procedures, emergency arrangements and requirements to work on the project, making all persons aware of the hazards which are present.

• Method Statement and Risk Assessment (RAMS) – these are produced for each task from the project setup to the demobilisation of the site and every task in between. Before each task, all staff involved are briefed on the contents of the RAMS and assigned roles and responsibilities within the task.

All of the above safety documentation is written by acompetent member of the project team, reviewed by thehealth and safety manager in charge of the project, and thenapproved by the project director to ensure document qualityand compliance.

All of these principal safety documents are live throughoutthe project and continually updated by the site and projectmanagers as the method or scope of works change or theenvironment changes on the site.

Site set up

Setting a project up correctly is of key importance whendelivering a safesite. It will ensure that the access and egressarrangements for pedestrians and vehicles, welfare facilities, site information, restricted areas, emergency arrangements andfacilities are clearly identifiable.

By ensuring that all site arrangements are clearly defined andidentifiable, it makes sure that all persons accessing the site willknow what to do and where to go. This will be achieved by:

safesite

• The installation of well designed, clear and concise signage at key locations – both outside of and within the site boundary

• The installation of clearly defined, segregated and signposted pedestrian and vehicle routes, both into and within the site boundary

• Ensuring that the welfare provided by Hydrock is to the highest standard and kept clean and tidy at all times

• Ensuring that the position of the welfare is such that new visitors to the site identify where to report

• The erection of solid boundary fencing• Segregation of plant areas• Ensuring that all emergency arrangements and

facilities are clearly visible and in place.

Within the site welfare, and included within the site inductionprocess, the Site Notice Board provides key arrangementsinformation for all of the site setup controls. The Site NoticeBoard and each item detailed on it, has been designed toprovide comprehensive, specific safety information in a clearand concise method, to make certain the information is takenin by those viewing it.

Site Management

To ensure the procedures and requirements of a safesite aredelivered, Hydrock appoints a competent site managementteam to deliver the project plan. The team consists of:

• Project Manager – oversees the delivery and safety of the project and ensures that the project plan, remediation plan and specifications of the contract are being delivered by the site as a whole;

• Site Manager – responsible for preparing safety documentation in advance of and during the running of the project and ensuring the project plan is delivered by the site team and that all of the requirements of the health and safety management system are adhered to;

• Supervisors – in control of work tasks being undertaken on site, responsible for ensuring Hydrock staff and subcontractors adhere to the method of work which has been agreed and halt works if the scope or method of works changes, and to ensure that a new method of work is agreed before works commence.

Both above and below this basic site management team areother key members of the overall project team, who willcontribute towards site safety and assist and provide expertadvice and guidance as required throughout the project. Theseconsist of, but are not limited to:

• Project Director• Contracts Manager• Remediation Manager• Health and Safety Manager• Environmental Engineer• Site Staff• Sub-Contractors.

Planning and Communication

The key to delivering a safesite is to utilise all of the skills whichHydrock’s Safe People hold to plan the project, taking accountof the site and task hazards and designing these out throughthe section of methodology, equipment, plant and substancesto be used to achieve the completed project.

To ensure that Hydrock delivers this aim, the project planningphase is of key importance. As part of this process the projectteam is selected on the individuals’ experience, knowledgeand expertise. Once the project team is selected, a site visit isundertaken when the whole project team can examine thesite and the proposed works to be undertaken, checking thepracticalities and issues which exist in trying to complete them.

From the site visit a number of tasks will assigned by theproject director to the project team. These will mostly be basedaround exploring ideas put forward by the project team, as tohow to complete the project effectively and safely. At the sametime a project start up meeting will be scheduled; this will beattended by the project team and the final methodology will beplanned and agreed.

Each member of the project team will be responsible forthe delivery of their pre-commencement requirements andarrangements, which will be checked and approved by theassigned health and safety manager.

At regular intervals throughout the project, project teammeetings will be held on site and attended by the wholeteam. This will discuss the work progress and upcomingworks in relation to the success of the project plan and wherehighlighted this will be changed to ensure and maintain safety.

All communication in relation to the project and the delivery oralteration of the project plan will be copied to the entire projectteam, to ensure that any negative effects to the project plancan be identified prior to them being realised on site.

The project plan is communicated to the workforce in smallsections of information on a daily basis prior to that sectionof the project plan being undertaken. The site manager willgather all staff and sub-contractors together and undertake aDaily Site Briefing. This will explain:

• all of the works which will be undertaken that day• assign positions and responsibilities within those works• identify, discuss and control any interactions between

work tasks• identify where environmental factors may impact the works• reinforce Hydrock’s Safety Messages.

These Daily Site Briefings are in addition to other task siterelatedbriefings and training delivered by the site managerprior to the commencement of works on a project.

Inspections and Audits

To maintain exceptional health and safety standards on allHydrock Safe Sites and to demonstrate health and safetyleadership from the top of the company down, four levels ofinspection are completed on all Hydrock projects. These are:

• Director’s Health and Safety Inspection – completed on every project which Hydrock undertakes, the project director will carry out a site tour, checking and inspecting the project setup and works being undertaken, to ensure that they conform to the project plan and to ensure there are no additional hazards present. The director will complete a form and issue the findings of their inspection to the site manager, detailing any actions to be taken.

• Health and Safety Audit – every project is audited by the Health and Safety Department on a monthly basis. This audit covers the entire project operation, documentation and setup etc. in detail and ensures that the project plan and health and safety management system is being adhered to. A safety report is issued to the site manager who is required to close out all items within a seven day (or shorter if specified) period.

• Project Manager’s Inspection – each project is inspected bi-weekly by the project manager to ensure that all documentation and contractual health and safety requirements are being delivered by the project. As well

as examining the health and safety management system requirements, this inspection ensures that any additional requirements placed on Hydrock by the client are being completed.

• Site Manager’s Inspection – the site manager is required to complete a formal health and safety inspection of the site every seven days. Although the site manager completes an inspection daily, this weekly inspection is designed to encourage the recording or identifying hazards and recording the remedial action put in place to resolve them.

The process of undertaking regular inspections and audits

Monitoring hydro-carbons in groundwater at Tanyard Lane

of all Hydrock sites at different levels of management ensuresthat the Health and Safety message is universal throughoutthe company and that all Hydrock employees understandthe importance of good health and safety practices.

Hazard and Accident reporting

Learning from incidents and accidents is of paramountimportance to Hydrock to ensure improvements are madeto our systems and procedures to prevent the same type ofaccident reoccurring or a potential accident from occurring.

Hydrock staff are encouraged to report all hazards to their line manager, who is required to make safe the hazard and then report it to the Health and Safety Department. Every hazard is investigated and recorded within the Accident and Incidents Database, where the data can be trend filtered toidentify key target areas. If an accident occurs on any Hydrock project – or involving any Hydrock member of staff – the Health and Safety Department is notified immediately, an accident investigation will commence and the immediate, underlying and root causes of the accident will be identified.

Following every accident or incident, a number ofimprovements will be put forward to the Safety Directorto tackle the causes of the accident or incident and, followingagreement, these will be written into the Health and SafetyManagement System, as well as Safety Bulletins/Notices issuedto all sites making teams aware of the incident/accident and

the updates to the Health and Safety Management System.

Every month a health and safety report is issued to theboard of directors which details all incidents and accidentswhich have occurred over the previous month and whataction has been taken. The report will also detail all of theaccident stats information, trend data, health and safetymanagement system performance, departmental performanceand key health and safety issues. This report is reviewedand any additional actions are agreed.

The introduction of the safepeople | safesite | safehomeinitiative has resulted in Hydrock’s accident reporting policybeing observed company wide, ensuring that all hazards, near misses and accidents are reported. As a result of thisdata gathering process and improvements to our systems,Hydrock has not experienced a reportable accident sinceJune 2013 and has an AIR of 0.0.

Traffic Management

Traffic management is a key element of every Hydrock site,as it poses one of the most significant risks to Hydrock staffworking on site. Hydrock’s operations are commonly plant-heavy works which are required to interact with ground staff undertaking technical works, so the implementation of a Traffic Management Plan which strictly controls these interactions is of key importance to delivering a safesite.

Every Hydrock project plans the work sequencing togetherwith the design of the Traffic Management Plan to ensurethat segregated plant/vehicle and pedestrian routes can bemaintained at all times across the entire site.

The design of the work areas are also of key importance, ensuring that, whenever possible, plant only areas are created. This is not always possible due to the technical works involvedwith controlled asbestos in soils and other contaminates, so tocontrol these risks a ‘thumbs up’ policy has been introducedthroughout the company.

The thumbs up policy requires any member of staff wantingto access the transport route within swing radius of an itemof plant to gain the attention of the plant operator and signaltheir intentions. The plant operator is then required to makesafe and turn off the item of plant until the member of staff hasre-signalled to confirm he, and all ground staff, have left theplant working area.

All Traffic Management Plan arrangements are fully coveredin each Site Safety Induction and again in each morningDaily Site Briefing. When the Traffic Management Plan ischanged or altered, a formal site briefing is undertaken andall staff and sub-contractors are fully briefed on these changes.Clear directional and information signage has been designedand standardised throughout Hydrock to ensure that alltransport routes are clearly identifiable to Hydrock andsub-contractor staff.

Tools and Equipment

To maintain Hydrock’s Safe Sites, all of the tools, plant andequipment which are used, are as new as is possible, areregularly serviced and inspected by competent personsbefore they are used. All tools, plant and equipment are onlypermitted to be used on Hydrock projects by those personswho have been trained to the Hydrock training standardsrequirement for the operations of such tools, plant andmachinery.

Tools, plant and equipment safety is key to eliminating seriousaccidents occurring on Hydrock projects. This, together withthe interaction between ground staff and the tools, plantand machinery, the quality of it and the competency of itsoperation, is of paramount importance.

All plant used on Hydrock projects is inspected by a competentperson at the point of delivery to ensure that it is in full workingorder. If defects are discovered following a full and detailedinspection, the item of plant is returned and will not be put towork on the project.

Following the delivery inspection, every item of plant isinspected before it is used each day. This inspection has beendesigned over three stages:

• External observational – Competent person checks around the item of plant, making sure that there are no signs of damage, leaks, etc

• Engine Check – competent person checks all the fluid levels and greasing points, topping up as required

• Operational Check – competent person checks the full functionality of the item of plant, operating all plant system.

The findings of this inspection are recorded onto a Mobile orStatic Plant form and returned to the Site Manager before anyworks can be undertaken using the item of plant. Following acheck of the inspection and ensuring that no defects have beenrecorded, the Site Manager will give authorisation to put theitem of plant into service.

All tools and equipment are inspected at the point of deliveryand then before use. Due to the many different type of toolsand equipment, there is no ‘one method fits all’ policy and themanufacturer’s recommendations for inspection is followed. All such inspections are entered onto the appropriate form andissued to the Site Manager before the tools or equipment arepermitted to be used on site.

Vehicles

Travelling between sites, offices and home can take up a major part of a working week, and we have a dedicated Fleet Management Team to ensure all company vehicles are maintained to a high standard, contributing to keeping our drivers safe.

Hydrock owns and leases company and pool cars, vans and commercial vehicles for use by eligible staff. The Fleet Management Team guarantees all vehicles are maintained and serviced to the highest level, in line with the manufacturer’s schedule and recommendations. Only garages authorised by the relevant manufacturer are used for servicing and repairs, and vehicles are only kept for a maximum of four years.

We also confirm that all drivers hold the relevant licence for every vehicle they drive and will, if necessary, require employees to undertake training and or pass proficiency tests to prove competence.

Safe Driver Policy We strive to look after our employees when travelling to and from sites or offices, and not just while working on site. A Safe Driver Policy has been successfully introduced, with the aim of improving driving behaviour, potentially reducing the number of accidents and injuries.

We have installed GPS Telematics devices in our commercial vehicles, pool vehicles and some company cars. These monitor and score drivers on five areas of driving practice – RPM, idling, braking, acceleration and speeding – and highlight where improvements can be made.

Every driver/vehicle is then classed as: red – immediate improvements required; amber – improvements necessary; or green – great driving! Our aim is to have all drivers in the green category by 2015.

Every quarter based on these scores the best drivers and most improved drivers each receive a £25 high street gift voucher and this is publicised in our internal newsletter which is distributed company-wide.

safehome

In the first six months of this initiative, speeds have been reduced dramatically along with RPM. By monitoring driving, our employees are driving more responsibly and carefully, getting them to site and home safely.

Occupational Health

Hydrock aims to promote and maintain a healthy workforce, caring for the physical and mental wellbeing of its staff. Despite this ethos, occasions will arise when an employee is unwell on either a short or long term basis, and if deemed appropriate or helpful, an individual will be referred to an occupational health specialist. They will be appointed through Hydrock’s medical insurance framework to ensure an independent and high quality health professional.

Their advice can range from identifying any underlying causes and the suggested course of action in support of those, to rehabilitation recommendations to facilitate an early and effective return to work.

It may be that an employee is suffering from work-related ill health, where the work or working environment is affecting employee health and safety. An occupational health referral is then essential to establish if there is an occupational related cause, and if so advise on measures to eliminate or at the very least minimise the problem.

This professional advice will also ensure the employee is

fit to return to work and if any restrictions need apply. To maintain our safe sites, our people need to be fit and well – and as a result safe – both at work and home.

Hydrock has a strong ethos to support all staff to look after their health at home as well as at work. We actively encourage the pursuit of all-round health and fitness, providing an annual Healthy Living Bonus to help cover personal expenses focussed on recreational health. This could range from gym membership to sporting equipment or even a weight-loss class. We also provide fresh fruit on all long term sites and offices.

As a company we also regularly pay for staff members to participate in sporting events such as triathlons, which once again encourages fitness, but also provides an excellent team-building environment. Employees are given a day off to participate in such activities when in aid of charity.

Former GEC Works, Rugby, St Modwen

Remediation of a former electrical factory and grounds consisting of the removal of underground structures, the remediation of 16,000m3 of asbestos impacted soils and the identification and remediation of hydrocarbon impacted groundwater.

Bush Farm, Essex

This project consisted of the excavation and remediation of illegally tipped material from a gravel pit surrounded by fishing lakes. These works required excavation of the material 2m below the groundwater table and the treatment of the impacted groundwater.

Former Primary School, Plymouth

The remediation of the entire former primary school site, impacted by demolition material contaminated with asbestos fibres. These works consisted of the demolition of new residential property structures combined with existing part demolished structures and the remediation of all soils across the whole site to allow the future residential development of the site.

Since the introduction of safepeople | safesite | safehome and its delivery across all of Hydrock’s projects, there has been a measured improvement of our occupational health and safety standards, which were already recognised as above industry sector standard.

The projects featured below are examples of contracts delivered under the safepeople | safesite | safehome initiative which comprised high risk occupational health and safety hazards. These were controlled and mitigated throughout, delivering the highest standards and ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of all Hydrock staff and third parties who could have been affected by the works.

Waterside Regeneration, University of Northampton

Hydrock has undertaken two phases of a project to construct Northampton University campus which has consisted of the removal of underground structures within asbestos impacted soils and the remediation of asbestos impacted soils of this 55 acre site which comprised a former coal-fired power station, Avon Cosmetics manufacturing facility, rail line and Grade II listed former engine shed.

Former Croda Works, Bromborough

Demolition, remediation and enablement works of a former chemical plant due for redevelopment as both residential and commercial end use. Removal of all above ground building including notifiable asbestos. Removal of hard standing and foundations to a depth of 1.5mbgl, identification of contaminated soils and on-site treatment to enable reuse. Reprofiling of the site to the required development level and compaction criteria. Works also involve the realignment of an adjacent river channel to meet the requirements of the flood alleviation scheme for the development.

Tanyard Lane

Groundwater remediation scheme due to historical impact of the underlying aquifer. Site consists of a former laundry facility that leaked chlorinated solvents, which is up hydraulic gradient of a former timber yard that has leaked creosote into the aquifer. The two contaminant sources have mixed creating a complex and mobile plume that has now impacted an adjacent field. Contamination is contained solely within the saturated zone; with our works involving the removal of free phase product (both LNAPL and DNAPL) via abstraction boreholes, followed by the treatment of the dissolved phase plume through techniques such as surfactant flushing and chemical oxidation. This will be followed by a period of monitored natural attenuation to demonstrate a reduction in contaminant loading. hydrock.com
