Dear Parents/Caregivers and Students Another really busy start to the term. I have been privileged to spend a week with our kapahaka group at the Nationals which were in Gisborne. Te Huatai Katorika are an extraordinary group of young people and it was amazing to see the way they have helped each other on what has been a

journey of extraordinary hard work! A big vote of thanks to Whaea Frost and Tupu Williams as they have shown real leadership, fortitude and a phenomenal work ethic with this group. Tena korua Tawai raua ko Tupu. This group have also had a wonderful parent support group who have been able to tautoko them every step of the way. E nga matua e nga ringawera Tena koutou. He rau aroha ki a koutou. Kia ora ki te whanau mo to koutou manaakitanga. The talented tutors of this group were mentioned in our last newsletter too but I would like to mention them again:

Thank you so much!

From the Principal’s desk:

Kia Ora Koutou Katoa Talofa lava Fakaalofa lahi atu Kia Orana Namaste Welkom Herzlich Willkommen Witamy Greetings to everyone

Te Aroha Wilson, Carmel Taiaroa, Sophie Wells, Lennie King, Jesse Huriwai and Rogan Tinirau. All wonderful tutors.

Jesse Huriwai, an awesome tutor.

Our young people did not get into the finals but they are a credit to St Bernard’s College and Sacred Heart College as they really do live out the special character of our two schools with the aroha they show for each other, the commitment they have to their Maoritanga and their energy. Ka nui te wehi, te mauri me te mana. Thank you Te Huatai katorika – you have all taught me a lot. Good luck for the years ahead. You have a very bright future.

The audience at the dress rehearsal were captivated!

The group performed on the Tuesday morning and they also did a wonderful performance for Ilminster Intermediate. I would also like to thank Ilminster for their outstanding hospitality and we will be sending them a copy of this newsletter and some photos. I took about 400 photos and these are all available on the student drive at school so students have access to them. (Some parents have been asking me about this). I will conclude this section by showing a couple of the photos from the Ilminster performance.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards On Saturday 17th August I went to Government House to see nine of our girls receive their Duke of Edinburgh awards (Gold). Our girls looked so nice with perfect uniform and we were (of course!) the largest group there. There is another group of students who will get their awards later but again we have well over 30 gold awards and this is a credit to Maria Kerr and Briony Hibberd but also to the many staff members who help out on the trips. I would like to thank all our Boards of Trustees too over decades gone as all of them have seen this scheme as a priority and part of the complex weaving that makes up our college. The Board of Trustees has always supported the original vision which came from Sister Marie Gabrielle Wright. She would be astounded to see where this vision has led and the numbers who have benefitted from the programme.

with all the other Gold Award recipients. Our girls joined by Emma Coffey the Deputy Mayor of Porirua. She was the guest speaker and is a past pupil of Sacred Heart College (Year 13 1995).

Our gold girls are: Laura, Chanelle, Madison, Jade, Ricki-Jane, Kyra, Awhina, Megan, Harriet.

Our girls in one of the many nice rooms at Government House.

Our Duke of Edinburgh staff team Briony Hibberd and Maria Kerr with myself at Government House. Netball 17 August 2014 I saw some great games of netball on Saturday after I had attended the aerobics.

Our Goal Shoot putting up another winning goal. A very good game!

We have teams in the finals next Saturday (August 24th) at Taita College courts. I saw one very excited team, SHC #25, and I wish them all the best for their big game next week! It is a big achievement getting in the final. They are one of ten Sacred Heart teams that have made the Hutt Valley finals. The full list of teams is in the sports report. Good luck girls. Kia kaha! Principal’s Farewell ― 12 September 2014. 5.00 – 7.00pm Sadly all good things must come to an end. I am retiring at the end of term. We have a new Principal appointment and the Board of Trustees have included an announcement in this newsletter advising you of the new Principal. There is a farewell on 12 September at 5.00pm in the Performing Arts Centre. Please RSVP to Sue Eastwood by 4 September if you would like to attend ([email protected]). I would like to thank the Boards who appointed me back in November 1999. Working in this school has been a privilege. Thank you to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions who have always been supportive and encouraging. A special thanks to Sister Connie Hurley, Sister Valerie Lawson, Sister Jo Kane, Sister Rosalene Hoban, Sister Carmel Cole, Sister Marie Ignatius and Sister Theresa Galvin (Petone) but to all the Sisters too. There will be another newsletter before the end of term and we will ensure that there are more poroporoake thank you’s in that. Sacred Heart College has a wonderful spirit and it will be remembered in my prayers. Thank you to our parent community, our parishes, our Catholic primary schools and our clergy. National Association of Catholic Principals Conference Wellington 2014 There was a mihi whakatau for all our colleagues who are “out of town” Catholic Principals and two of our house captains represented the school: Ruby Willis and Sophie Beaumont. They did a great job and both had speaking tasks to do. I would like to thank them for giving up time on a Sunday night. There was a farewell for Father Paul Martin, former Rector of St Patrick’s College and I was also farewelled. I thanked the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions for their wonderful support and thanked NAPCSS (National Association of Principals of Catholic Secondary Schools) for the support that the group gives to all Catholic Principals. I know they will give great support to our new Principal, Maria Potter, and it was nice to be able to acknowledge Maria’s appointment and give her warm support at this function. Ruby and Sophie with other students from Wellington’s

secondary colleges.

Our students are ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Thank you girls. All good wishes for the end of your Year 13 year.

Sister Anne Sklenars RNDM speaking at the NAPCSS Conference. The theme was “Social Justice”. Sister Anne lived in Burma and Vietnam for 15 years. She gave a wonderful address saying that when we assist others we are actually “missioning” to ourselves as well. She had an important message as did Kitty McKinley of Challenge 2000 and Monsignor Gerard Burns. All of them spoke on the Social Justice theme.

Sophie and Ruby got to walk on water. No mean feat!

Sophie, Lisl Prendergast and Ruby at the National Association for Catholic Principals Conference, Kingsgate Hotel Wellington 18 August 2014.

I hope Andrew Niania will forgive me but I did say in my speech that you know it’s time to move on when someone says to you “You taught my father Miss”. Thank you Andrew and Sophie. Thank you to Ruby too. It was a really memorable night. Kia ora korua. I would also like to thank Steve Bryan of Sacred Heart College Napier for the poroporoake (farewell speech) that he gave me. It was really humbling. He also paid tribute to our Sisters and thanked them for the wonderful conference in Perth last year and the support they gave us for our trip to France in 2006. He rau aroha ki a koe Steve. I know you read these newsletters as you produced one in the middle of your speech! You will also be pleased to see that I have remembered to do a reflection! This week I will also attend my last meeting of NZSPC (New Zealand Secondary Principals Council). This has also been a terrific group to work with and the New Zealand Post Primary Teachers Association do a great job in assisting this group. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent integrated schools on this body. It was a co-opted position and I learnt a lot from attending these meetings. My best wishes to our new Principal, Maria Potter. It is wonderful to have a past pupil as our new tumuaki. Ma te Atua koe e manaaki Maria. Term 3 Staff farewells Leaving: We farewell Valerie Andrews on the 12th September. A big thank you to Valerie for assisting in the English and RE Departments. We will also be farewelling our Laboratory Technician at the end of the term. We are very sorry to say good-bye to Liz Carey. She and her family are off to Christchurch. Liz has given 14 years’ service to Sacred Heart College and the Science Department are really grateful for her excellent organisation and support of teachers. We have a number of staff on maternity leave or going on maternity leave. Currently on leave is Rebecca Anderson and next term Maria Kerr and Kristina Moloney will begin their maternity leave. Next year we have Anna Peszynski and Bronwyn Davies on maternity leave. We wish all our new mothers well. We do hope for some girls too as this will possibly burst our enrolments in 2027!! We will have our relieving positions in the next newsletter and a personnel update for you. Some of these positions have still to be interviewed for.

“WE HAVE A NEW PRINCIPAL!”

It is with great pleasure that the Board of Trustees

advises that we have appointed Mrs Maria Potter

as the new Principal of Sacred Heart College.

She will take up her new role from Term 1, 2015.

Mrs Spencer will be acting Principal in Term 4, 2014.

Mrs Potter is currently the Principal at Opunake High School where she is held in high

regard. She comes to us with the highest recommendations from within the State system

and the Catholic education system. Her family are from Lower Hutt and, best of all, she

knows Sacred Heart College personally, having been a pupil here in the early 1980s.

Mrs Potter has a passion for educating young people and relishes the opportunity to lead

Sacred Heart College. We look forward to introducing her to the wider school community at

the beginning of Term 1, 2015.

Tony Lenton Chairperson Board of Trustees

Year 11, 12 and 13 Important Information

We have recently distributed cards received from NZQA to girls who are sitting NCEA exams this year. All year 11 students have visited the computer rooms during form time to ensure that they can log into the NZQA site to look at the exam timetable and to check their results and subject entries to date.

It is important that all girls log into the NZQA site and check any results that are entered and ensure that they are entered for the correct standards. If any results are not correct please talk to your subject teacher. If any of your subject entries are not correct particularly for external exams at the end of the year please see Mrs Spencer or Mrs Pigou immediately. It is often too late for us to fix any errors at the end of the year. Please ensure that your daughter is checking her information on the NZQA site regularly. We only submit results once each month so please be aware that some results will not show up immediately.

___________________________________________ House Feast Day Donations - where do they go? Thank you to each of the school houses for raising money on your feast days. This year the money is going to help an RNDM project in Kenya, Africa. Sr Helen O’Sullivan, RNDM writes, “Please pass on to the school houses who kindly raise the money, that we would like to send the money to Machakos, Kenya, where we have a tailoring training programme for young girls whose families cannot afford further education in order for their daughters to secure employment. Twenty-two young women from 16-19 years old are trained in all aspects of tailoring with money from solidarity donations and the young women and their families are encouraged to find the fee for sitting the State examinations which, if successful, will enable them to secure jobs. Empowerment of young women through the support of other young women!”

ICAS Australian Science Test. On the 4th of June the year 9 and 10 extension science classes sat the ICAS ‘Australian’ Science Test. The test was a challenging set of 45 multi-choice questions examining students’ understanding of science ideas and concepts. The results gained were very pleasing. Of the 55 students who participated 6 achieved the merit award, 17 the credit and 3 the distinction. The distinction accolade is awarded only to students who gain results in the top ten percent of all participants. These students were: Mary McMartin and Nicola Donaldson (year 9) and Charlotte Best (year 10). The school wishes to congratulate these students and all the participants on their achievements.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

In 2015 the college is planning for all Year 9s to be able to bring their own device to use in school. This could be a laptop or a tablet or a smartphone, although we don’t recommend smart phones for use throughout a lesson. BYOD will be optional for other students from 2015. Some classes are trialling BYOD this year. If this includes your daughter you will have received a separate letter about this. The school is not recommending particular brands or devices. Parents can take advantage of cheap deals offered by local retail outlets. Your daughter will be required to sign a new digital citizenship agreement with the school and all teachers will take every opportunity to talk about what this means with students. When the agreements are finalised they will be published on the website for parents to view. There is no pressure for parents to purchase devices for girls in Years 10 – 13 in 2015. If students bring a device to school they are responsible for its care and safety. The device should be with the student or in a locked locker at ALL TIMES. Every department in the school will be encouraged to use student devices as a tool to enhance learning. This means the devices may not be used in every lesson all of the time. The school is in the process of upgrading its network so that it has improved ability to monitor the use of all devices connected to it. If your daughter has access to the internet via her own data plan and is not accessing the internet via the school wireless network then she can go to any website that she chooses. Parents should discuss safe internet usage with their daughter. As we are still in the process of developing our BYOD processes we would welcome questions/comments/suggestions from parents. This can be done via the website or email Alison Spencer: [email protected].

SPORTS REPORT August 2014 Annual Te Toa Hockey Tournament

The 1st X1 Hockey team represented SHC at the Te Toa Hockey Tournament held in Napier from Sunday 3rd to Tuesday 5th of August.

On our first day we travelled together as a team in the SHC school van. The annual exchange involved a Powhiri to welcome the travelling schools at the start of the tournament. Sacred Heart Napier and St Joseph’s Maori Girls held the Powhiri at the Park Islands Hockey turf.

We played our first game against Sacred Heart Hamilton. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t at its Hawkes Bay finest. We enjoyed a successful first half but were unable to come out with the result we wanted with a 3-4 loss in the final stages of the game. After a quick shower and change, we gathered at St Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College chapel for a Mass followed by a dinner hosted by the St Joseph’s girls.

On the second day we played two games and had two wins; one against St Joseph’s resulting in a 6-0 win and the second, 5-0 against Sacred Heart Napier. Later that night we enjoyed a shared evening meal where all five teams were divided into table groups. An intense social quiz competition took place and friendships were established.

On our last day under the Hawkes Bay sun, we battled during our final game against Sacred Heart New Plymouth. The girls fought hard but we couldn’t get the result we so craved and lost by a margin of 2-3.

The following girls were awarded Fair play awards in each game:

Aroha Hibbert x2, Liana Clark and Lauren Scott.

A big thanks to Mrs Kenny, Trudy Hadley (manager) for all of their help over the weekend. We couldn’t have done it without their time and commitment. Another thank you to Sacred Heart College Napier for hosting a great tournament and to the other teams for an enjoyable few days in the Hawkes Bay.

Table Tennis Sacred Heart College has been well represented this term with some excellent results in College Sport Wellington competitions. Sophie Telfer won the CSW Senior Girls championships held at Empire Stadium on Friday 1st August. The SHC Table Tennis team won the CSW Teams championship on Friday 8th August. The team was: Sophie Telfer, Christine Hosie, Aisiri Ravindra, Thilini Perera. Congratulations to these girls who have kept the flag flying for girls Table Tennis, with convincing wins in both these events.

CSW Road Race held at Heretaunga

on Tuesday 5th August A large team of Junior and Intermediate girls competed in the annual CSW Road Race held at Heretaunga in Upper Hutt. Congratulations to Lucy England who finished 3rd in the major placings. The girls also won the 6 person team event.

CSW Huia Swimming Relays SHC had only one team compete in this event held at the Naenae Pool on Thursday 14th August. Tsai Stevens, Tia McDougall, Nicola Donaldson & Lucy England all competed gaining a 3rd in the Junior Medley relay. The team came 8th overall. A big thank you to Mr Noel Stevens who accompanied the team for the evening.

CSW Aerobics Championships A small SHC team competed in the CSW Aerobics Dance championships held in the SHC Performing Arts centre on Saturday 16th August. Results were: Michaela Steiner – 3rd Jnr novice Madison Raiti-Young – 6th Jnr open novice Zoe Eathorne & Kiralee Cooke – 1st Secondary novice team A huge thank you to Tanya Houpt for her fantastic coaching and instruction for the girls.

CSW Squash championships In August Sacred Heart College entered a team in the Squash championships held at Kelburn Squash club. The team consisted of some graded players and some ‘rookies’.

Lucy England (No. 1)

The girls had a great day of squash competing in their various ability groups. Amanda Veldman beat Lisa-Marie Imray in the final of the Girls Rookie grade. Kelsey Morrison did very well in the girls Open grade and Zoe Algar, Chanelle Jenkinson and Angela O’Kane all played admirably in their respective grades.

Winter Sports competition Results Football This season saw 3 Football teams competing in weekly CSW competitions. The 1st XI team play their semi-final this week against St Marys after a very good season of Football. The team are in a re-building phase after losing several senior players from last year, but are well geared up and ready to compete in the Grant Jarvis Trophy to be held at Wakefield Park in Wellington during Winter tournament week. The 2nd XI team ran with a very big squad, well managed and coached by Dave Bruin. A huge thank you goes to Dave with the team developing strongly and ending the season in a very positive, well contested final game against Upper Hutt College. Unfortunately we were runners up but the team improved immensely through the season and worked superbly as a unit. The 3rd XI ‘Social’ team are a group of girls who did not train but loved their football, going through the season unbeaten. Their final against Heretaunga came out with Sacred Heart College winning 5 – 1.

Netball With 26 SHC Netball teams competing this season, SHC dominated the netball grades with at least 2 teams in every grade right through. With a superb line up of keen and dedicated coaches, SHC had all but 5 teams in the semi-finals held last Saturday and have 10 teams competing in the CSW Netball finals on Saturday 23rd August. Teams in the finals are 10A 10B 10C 10E 9A 9B 9C 9D 9E Senior F. The teams all play at Taita College courts Saturday morning finishing with presentations at Walter Nash stadium in the afternoon, following the Hutt Valley Senior A final between Chilton & St Oran’s.

Basketball Sacred Heart College had 2 Basketball teams this season. The Senior team have finished top of Division 1 and now enter into semi final and final rounds. They are gearing up to travel to New Plymouth for Winter tournament week to compete in the NZSS Basketball Qualifying tournament. The Junior team have competed in the highly competitive Junior Premier grade finishing 8th with many of the girls relatively new to the game.

Our 3 Hockey teams are still competing in the weekly competition, into playoff rounds now. The 6 Junior & 4 Senior Badminton teams had a challenging season with only one team – the Junior 5 Badminton team winning the Division 4 Hutt Valley grade in the CSW Junior competition. The Rugby team had a challenging season but were very ably led by Davina Lasini. Unfortunately, a distinctive lack of commitment from some players and injuries affecting others, left the team frequently struggling for numbers and subsequently having some very tough games throughout the season. Waterpolo has finally begun their competition for the year after the Naenae Pool being out of action for most of the Winter because of maintenance issues. We have a Senior and a Junior team competing for the shortened season but a big thanks goes to the dedication of coach Lauren McGuinness, manager Angela Coffey & Sports captain Caitlin Byrne who frequently assists both teams.

Sports Awards Put the date on your calendar – Thursday 30th October 7pm. This is an invitation to you to help us celebrate the sporting achievements of our SHC students. Last year only a very small amount of parents and friends attended the Sports Awards evening held in the Performing Arts centre. I would like to invite everyone with a daughter who has been involved in sport, to put this date on your calendar. Please contact the sports office with any outstanding results and achievements that your daughter may have attained during the year, that we could be unaware of. We do not want to overlook anyone, especially in the minor sports.

SHC Sports Jackets A reminder that all girls playing in a SHC Sports team or representing the school (especially when travelling as a team) are required to wear the SHC Sports jacket (available at the uniform shop) & black Canterbury track pants. In 2015 it will be an expectation that all sports girls must have a SHC Sports jacket for all sports fixtures whether weekly competition or representing the school.

Y11 PED Hangdog Climbing Y11 Physical Education went to Hangdog Climbing Centre for a lesson in climbing techniques and skills. The girls had an awesome time and learnt a lot about belaying and climbing some quite hard routes. This lesson was part of their assessment, even though it was fun they gained skills such as communication, team work and physical skills. As their teacher I was very impressed with the work rate and enthusiasm of the girls, this is a new different activity for most of them and they have all gained so much from participating. Here are a few quotes from the girls: ‘Hangdog was really fun and we had such a good time. It’s an awesome experience and teaches you new skills and builds your confidence. Apart from the bruises on my legs from climbing hard climbs I had a great time, I hope to go back soon.’ Caity Prendergast ‘Hangdog was great, we were all so nervous at the start because the walls look so high. Apart from the slightly uncomfortable moments in the harness Hangdog is fabulous, can’t wait to go back.’ Rune Bosch, Gemma Woolcock, Olivia Wallis, Olivia Cornille and Caryl Moncal ‘Hangdog was great!’ Lily McKeefry, Melissa Warner, Leiloa Tanuvasa-Kamo, Christine Hosie, Emma Lahood and Mia Paranihi.

SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS School exams are held in week 8 Monday 15th September to Monday 22th September for all students in Years 11, 12 and 13. The timetable is available on the school website. The exams are held under the same conditions as the end of year externals and the internal assessments during the year. The girls will be reminded of these rules closer to the

time, in particular the rules regarding cellphones. Year 9 and 10 students will have normal classes although the lesson times will change during the day. Girls are only required to be at school when they have an exam. Year 13 students involved in the modular program are required to be at school all week. Mr Baxter will be issuing them with a separate timetable. If you have any questions about this please contact Mr Baxter on extension 246. In addition to providing an opportunity for the girls to practice their skills for the external exams held in November these exams may provide a grade should your daughter be absent for any of the external exams and be eligible for a derived grade. Most year 11 students will be sitting the maths common assessment task during exam week instead of during November. This exam does not

have a reassessment opportunity. Students can apply for a derived grade with suitable evidence such as a medical certificate if they miss the exam. Your daughter’s maths teacher will explain the details of this exam during class. If you have any questions about the maths exam please contact Mr Neyland, HOD Maths on extension 240. Every year we have a number of girls who miss the external exams due to illness or bereavement. If we need to use these results for a derived grade from NZQA we may need the exam paper. This means that many departments in the school do NOT allow girls to take school exam papers home. If girls are allowed to take their exam papers home they may be required to return them to school if they need to apply for a derived grade. Please note that students who miss a school exam will NOT have another opportunity to sit the exam. If your daughter has arranged to work with a teacher at school during exam week she must sign in and out at the office. The library is available for quiet study. Students who are working on portfolios of work for NCEA (eg Art, Materials, Technology and Business Studies) have been timetabled periods of time that they may work at school. If you require additional time please see your teachers to organize this. At this stage of the year all girls who are sitting NCEA this year should have checked that their entries are correct on the NZQA website. It is normal for a delay to happen between receiving internally assessed results in class and the result appearing on the website as we only send results to NZQA once each month. If your daughter is not sure how to do this she should ask her Dean or a DP. Girls should keep their passwords safe because we do not have copies of them.

www.ncea.govt.nz

Year 13 students who wish to enter scholarship subjects should have been to see Mrs Spencer by now or they will not be entered. If your daughter wishes to enter a scholarship exam they should be working with the subject teacher on a regular basis. STUDY GROUP Study group is held every Thursday form 3.30pm to 4.30pm in the library for any student who wishes to attend. Girls can request certain teachers to be present – please see Mrs Bendikson. Girls may choose to work with a teacher or to work on their own. Computers are available for girls to use. The study group is open to all girls.

Dear ex- Dyer Street School Parents and Families, As you know, our wonderful Principal Denise Sainsbury is retiring at the end of this term, after 18 years leading our school. We have planned some special recognition for her, and would love

your help to celebrate the amazing work Denise has done for all of us and our children. We know many of you have had a long association with her- there have been generations of families through our school in her time. On Friday 26th September (the last day of the term) we will hold a special assembly- all are welcome! We will hold this at 1.40pm (just after our lunchtime) in the school hall. This will be an opportunity for our children and their families to celebrate, acknowledge and farewell Denise. At this assembly we would like to present a gift for Denise on behalf of our community. If you would like to contribute to this, please pass this onto your child’s class teacher in an envelope marked “Principal gift”, by Friday August 29th We would also like to create a ‘Memories’ book for Denise. This might include a personal message from you and your family, or photos of school events that you have been a part of. You might like to share your favourite memory of Denise! If you would like to have something included in this Memory Book- please visit Kris in the library, alternatively you can email us and we will ensure it is included: [email protected] by Friday 5th September.

REFLECTION The Feast of the Assumption was on 15th August. Mr Chote put together a lovely liturgy which was shared with the school via RE classes. There is a very special place in our hearts for Our Lady and this poem from the middle ages is one of my personal favourites. This is a translation from the Middle English which looks a lot different with words like moder (mother) and makeles (matchless).

I sing of a maiden That is matchless King of all kings For her son she chose. He came all so still Where his mother was As dew in April That falls on the grass. He came all so still To his mother’s bower As dew in April That falls on the flower.

There are many places around the world where Our Lady is venerated. I have been to a few of them and all of them are very special places of pilgrimage. There is a beautiful shrine in Walsingham, England where a Saxon noblewoman had a vision of the Virgin Mary in 1085. There is the mountainous retreat of Our Lady of Lourdes in the Pyrenees, Our Lady of Medjugoje (Herzegovinia) and Our Lady of Knock (Ireland). This is but a few of the special places of pilgrimage. The Church’s teaching is that these are private revelations and that the era of public revelation came to an end with the death of the last apostle. Our Lady has many titles, all of them special: Star of the Sea (Stella Maris) Queen of Heaven Queen of Peace. This is to name but a few. Many of the shrines to Our Lady are at springs of clear crystal water. There are many places named “Mary’s Well”. There is a particular lovely one in Penrhyn, Wales. These are places for prayer and reflection. They are also places of healing. Our Lady is honoured by the names of many flowers. There is Hawthorn which honours Mary as in the Northern hemisphere it comes out in May. There is the lily which Mary is often shown holding. “I am the Rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys” (Song of Songs 2:1).

He came all so still Where his mother lay As dew in April That falls on the spray. Mother and maiden There was never none but she Well may such a lady God’s mother be. Anonymous (c.1400)

The Rose is certainly associated with Our Lady – often called the mystical Rose of the multifoliate Rose. There is the humble marigold which early Christians called “Mary’s gold”. There is a lovely story that on the way to Egypt a group of robbers ambushed the Holy Family. They stole Mary’s purse but when they opened it only marigold petals fell out! The violet is sometimes called “Our Lady of Modesty”. It is said to have flowered when Mary said to the Archangel Gabriel “Behold I am a handmaid of the Lord”. The snowdrop was called Our Lady of Purity because it bloomed in February near the Feast of the Purification. (February 2nd). The Lily of the Valley is called “Our Lady of Tears” as it was said to have sprung from Mary’s tears at the foot of the Cross. The flower we know as “foxglove” in France is called “Gant de Notre Dame” – Our Lady’s glove. There are many other flowers I could mention but I will end with Columbine, often called Granny’s Bonnet, but in the Middle Ages it was “Our Lady’s Shoes”. Llandaff Cathedral in Wales has a beautiful altar screen which has 12 of these flowers or herbs of Mary on it. They are all named in Welsh.

Photo: Martin Crampin In conclusion, the most important aspect of any reverence of Our Lady is prayer. Prayers of the Rosary, the Hail Mary, Hail Queen of Heaven and many others but less formal prayers too that were offered in times of real trouble. This one was found in a wall in Iraq. Blessed mother help us. You, who witnessed your own son’s death, Look with compassion upon us. We pray for the Christians of Iraq and Syria and for all people who are being bombed and shelled. Please Our Lady, have pity on us all. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Year 9 and 10 Activity Days

On the 3 - 5th December inclusive year 9 and 10 students will be involved in activity days that are linked to curriculum areas and skills. The rationale behind these activity days is to give the junior students a chance to experience education outside the usual classroom model. Without senior students in school, there is much more scope for movement around our school facilities and flexibility in use of teachers.

It also gives the students a chance to have experiences outside of school without missing any learning in the classroom. It should enhance the skills they have developed throughout the academic year.Teachers have been working hard planning activities for these days. The girls will be able to choose the activity that they wish to be involved in for the three days. Some activities have a limit on the number of students that can take part and so choice will be on a first come first served basis. The activities are based around broad themes such as community, education outside the classroom and tourism. To help keep costs down groups will be sending details home for resources that parents may be able to help with such as material. Parent help for supervision would also be appreciated. Details will be provided later this term.
