Thursday 22 June 2017 (Week 8, Term 2) SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, Marist Symbol - Three Violets The image of three violets is a traditional Marist image which depicts three particular virtues as spiritual attitudes which motivate certain behaviours. The 'virtues': humility, simplicity and modesty resonate strongly with Jesus' Gospel message and the notion of Mary as a model for us all. Another way to apply these virtues has been expressed as 'doing good quietly' - not for one's personal benefit but for the benefit of others, or to promote a particular cause worthy of redress. During this week, a number of our students were recognised at the SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Awards. Sacred Heart students have participated in this project for the past few years under the direction of our Visual Arts staff. Following is an email excerpt from staff member, Kurtis Harrison: “I just wanted to share with you some photos from today's SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Awards Exhibition. Kirstin Tocker (SHC Staff) and I were very proud of Laura Wilson, Loretta McKinnon, Larnce O' Flaherty and Olivia McColl. a number of our students assist these younger girls and boys with their homework. Cara McGlaughlin, Amanda Devanana, Aisling McCorry-Jenkinson, Siobhan Schulz, Alyssa Sedunary, Olivia Carver, Chloe Dutschke, Liam Byrne, Olivia Boyd, Pauline Malycha and Inkeka Garton offer their time 'quietly', as do former students and 'Young Marists', Jesse Romeo, Daniella Rosa-Hernandez, Matea Hayden and Emma Zeitz. Brother Michael Green FMS in his take on the three violets suggests that the three violets are intended to be symbolic of spiritual attitudes, not just human behaviours. Read his reflection here. That our students readily engage in such activities and projects, utilising their many gifts and talents for the benefit of others, is inspiring. The role of the Visual Arts and social outreach projects are typical of the Catholic, Marist mission of Sacred Heart College. As we mark the traditional Feast of the Sacred Heart this week, 'reaching out' is tangible evidence of the love and care we can express to others

Well done to all involved! Steve Byrne Principal

Nationally Consistent Collection on School Students with Disability - 2017 We have commenced the annual nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability. The Collection is aimed at providing all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students with disability in schools, and the adjustments they require to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students. The data collection will involve the collection of the following information:

• the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students;

• the level of adjustment provided to students; • and where known, the student’s type of disability.

Under the Collection model the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions. If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information about your child will be included in this year’s data collection. Once the data has been collated, it will be de-identified before providing it to the Australian Government Department of Education. This ensures that no student’s identity can be reasonably ascertained. The data will be used by the College to inform and improve practices for students with disability and by CESA to inform initiatives. The Australian Government Department of Education will use the information collected to inform national policy development. If you have any questions about the data collection, please do not hesitate to contact Sean Perry Year 6-9) at [email protected] or Meredith Jones (Years 10-12) at [email protected]. Further information about the Collection can be found at http://www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistentcollection-data-school-students-disability. Year 9 Drama class experience Senior production On Thursday 15 June, the Year 9 Drama class headed over to the Senior School to watch the Stage 1 Drama production, ‘All Stops Out’. It was a chance for the Year 9 students to see a live performance in the Br Stephen Debourg Centre with a full set, costumes and lighting. The play is set in the 1980’s and explores the pressure of the final year of school, with many issues still relevant in today’s society. The boys also had the opportunity to see how the technical side of a show is run from ‘upstairs’ in the sound and lighting area. We had a demonstration of how the sound effects and lighting cues were controlled from the desk, which was a wonderful insight into the very important ‘backstage’ roles in Drama. We thank Robyn Page (Senior Drama teacher) and the Stage 1 Class for this one-off performance for us, and to our parent volunteer Jo for joining us. Louise Durrans Drama Teacher (Middle School)

Japanese Movie Evening A Japanese Movie Evening was held at Senior School on Thursday 18 May in Week 3, Term 2. Sixty-eight students who are currently studying Stage 1 and 2 Japanese at the Senior campus along with Year 9 Japanese students from the Middle School and Marymount College came together to enjoyed two Japanese movies and a pizza dinner. The evening was a great success, finishing with spontaneous cheering and clapping from the students. Below are some of the comments from students: “It was very interesting to see a different side of Japanese culture in a casual setting. We watched two films, one anime and one liveaction – both very different genres. I really enjoyed the movies as well as being with my classmates outside of the classroom.” “We watched two movies called ‘Summer Wars’ and ‘Handsome suit’. Both movies were interesting to watch as they were completely different to any Western movies that I have seen or am used to seeing. It was the first time I had ever seen a Japanese liveaction comedy and it was very funny and enjoyable. I would definitely love to have a movie evening like this again as it was really fun and interesting to learn about Japanese culture through a fun activity like this event.” “The first movie, ‘Summer Wars’, was very fluid with animation and colour. The story was definitely not what you would expect from an animated movie as I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The family aspect of the film shared how much Japanese people value and care about their family and how strong their bond is. The second movie, ‘Handsome suit’, was incredibly funny with such a ridiculous plot and out of the ordinary characters. I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. It is a shame I did not discover movies like this earlier. It really showed how funny Japanese comedies can be and how they can be just as funny as western comedies. Overall, I really enjoyed the movies and I hope to enjoy similar events in the future.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School I am writing this very brief article from The Hermitage in Mittagong, NSW - the home of Marist spirituality and formation. Our Year 7 students had the opportunity to spend time here two weeks ago to deepen their own connection with Marist spirituality, and in particular, the story of Marcellin Champagnat and his mission to make Jesus Christ known and loved. It has been a great opportunity for me to personally refocus on the real mission of Marist and indeed all Catholic schools. Often we (myself included) get a little bogged down and busy with work, which is necessary in the life of a school but shouldn't become the focus. Our primary goal is and needs to be making Jesus Christ and the Gospel known to those entrusted in our care. We need to be a model of church for our students, a church that is amongst other things truly present to all individuals, genuinely connected to current needs, faithful to Jesus and His teachings, provides a sense of hope to all and acutely aware of the need to love ourselves and each other. Many of these qualities are nurtured in our Marist charism or characteristics which promotes simplicity, presence, family spirit, a love of hard work and devotion to Mary our Good Mother. The challenge is and will always be to bring this mission or process of evangelisation to our students in a way that connects with them deeply and in a way in which they understand. As we approach the end of term, I would remind all students of the need to ensure that final assessment tasks are completed and passed in. Now is a great time to have these conversations with your son(s) and I would encourage you to take the time to discuss the contents of his end of semester report, which will be distributed in Week 10. Friday is the Feast of the Sacred Heart - a special time for our school community and I look forward to the Eucharistic celebration. The many images of Jesus's Sacred Heart remind us of God's love not just for His son but for of all humankind. Have a great week! Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Year 9 Camp – Flinders Ranges On Tuesday 6 June, all Year 9 students set off on camp to the beautiful and scenic Bendleby Ranges in the Flinders Ranges. The aim of this experience was for the boys to step out of their comfort zones and reflect on what it means to be fine young men. Some of the highlights included day walks around the breathtaking hills and mountains, mountain biking on the tough rocky terrain, as well as having time for some solitude in the great outdoors. At night time, a warm fire offered tremendous relief for our boys as the overnight temperatures dropped as low as -3 degrees. Overall, the camp taught many of the boys a few lessons. These included not taking what we have at home for granted and that an environment where everybody is working well with each other makes things a lot easier. Seven boys (one from each class) were awarded with a ‘Man of the Camp’ award. Congratulations to Anthony Bosnakis, Fletcher Luscombe, Conner Critchard-Bligh, Jack Dwyer, Peter Paech, Eric Reddy and Jarrod Blundell. “I think all the boys in Year 9 learnt a lot from this camp. Most importantly, we learnt to strive to be the best young men we can be and to step out of our comfort zones so that we can learn to grow.” - Joshua Lewis, Year 9 student. “The camp was a fantastic experience and all of the activities were quite entertaining. It was good to see everybody stepping out of their comfort zones, whether that was mountain biking down a rocky hill, or boys trying to stay quiet in the solo experience.” - Jordan Hunter, Year 9 student.

Year 7 Canberra Camp

Camp is always an exciting time for the boys, particularly in Year 7, as the boys share the time touring Canberra and at the Marist Hermitage in Mittagong. The camp took place in Week 6, 5-9 June 2017. Visiting our nation’s capital, Canberra is a fantastic experience that blends the Civics and Citizenship unit being studied in Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), with the building of our year level community. Whilst in Mittagong, the boys are afforded the opportunity to learn more about the College’s Marist heritage, particularly focusing on our theme for the year, In the way of Mary.

In Canberra, the boys enjoyed some time at Questacon, Parliament House and Old Parliament House. Generally speaking, the boys are most excited about visiting the Australian Institute of Sport and being toured around the facilities by an athlete in residence. However upon reflection, the boys speak most highly of their experience at the Australian War Memorial.

The Hermitage was a particularly special place for us to visit as it represents the original Hermitage in France, where Marcellin Champagnat first founded the Marist Brothers. Our time at Mittagong gave us a chance to stop and reflect on what makes us the people we are. During this time, we developed year level banners that symbolise our identity, made lizard tails that held inside them things they needed 'to let go of', participated in a yoga workshop and got to show our competitive side in the Amazing Marist Race. Our banner and art instalments will soon appear in our Year 7 area at school as a reflection of what they boys have taken away from the experience.

The boys were outstanding in all aspects of the camp from the moment we grouped at the airport until arriving back in Adelaide on the Friday afternoon. Many of the venues we visited, airline staff and passengers commended the boys on their positive conduct and manners, which is always lovely to hear. The students showed an immense amount of respect towards staff and each other during the camp and showed a gratitude for the experiences they were able to share.

Overall, the camp experience allowed students to strengthen their bonds as a Year 7 community.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. The Australian Government will contribute funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the costs of the trip. The rebate is paid directly to the College upon completion of the excursion.

Year 6 students identify their super powers What's your superpower? This was the question posed to the Year 6 students in an exercise to discover their top five character strengths. As part of a week of activities, Year 6 students took part in an online VIA Character Strengths questionnaire. This questionnaire assisted students to rank 24 character traits in order of strength. Students learnt, that just like super heroes, each one of us possess character strengths in varying degrees that make us who we are. The VIA Classification of Character Strengths is comprised of 24 character strengths that fall under six broad virtue categories: wisdom and knowledge, courage, humanity, justice, temperance and transcendence. Classification of strengths:

• Wisdom and Knowledge: creativity, curiosity, judgment, love of learning, perspective. • Courage: bravery, perseverance, honesty, zest. • Humanity: love, kindness, social intelligence. • Justice: teamwork, fairness, leadership. • Temperance: forgiveness, humility, prudence, self-regulation.

Identifying and using our character strength can help us and others produce positive effects when we express or strengths. Knowing the makeup of our character strengths is the first step towards living a successful and happier life. Are you interested in knowing your character strengths? If so you can discover your personalised Character Strengths Profile by taking a personality test through this link VIA Survey. Character Strengths is an aspect of Positive Education and the Year 6 character strengths exercise was initiated by the Year 6 Leaders of Student Wellbeing, Ashleigh Bryans and Year 6 teacher, Tina Robins following their attendance at the Positive Education Schools Association Conference. Up, up and away! Joe Millemaci Director of Students

Pedal Prix The UniSA Australian HPV Super Series is staged by Australian International Pedal Prix Inc. and is a competition where teams race Human Powered Vehicles (HPV’s) on a closed controlled circuit. On Sunday 18 June, the Middle School’s Pedal Prix team turned up at Victoria Park for a chilly and foggy start to this year's racing campaign. With repairs, re-skins and re-taping taking up a few nights in the workshop during camp week, all vehicles have undergone a pre-race tune-up making them ready to go in Race 1 Adelaide for new and returning riders. After a pre-race track walk to familiarise new riders to the challenges of the course, a nervous energy spread through the competitors as the clock counted down to the start of the six-hour event. After a slippery start with some crashes, bumps and knocks, the riders settled into the race and the spectators enjoyed the spill and thrills of 'crash corner' and the event action. The Year 6 riders, in a newly skinned Sacred Stars’ vehicle, completed 76 laps relatively incident free. Avatar 2, the newest vehicle powered by the Year 7s, added some extra scrapes and dings courtesy of pushy teams who caused a roll over. The Year 7s completed the most laps at 96. Year 8 and 9 students set Heartbeat on its way. Despite a chain issue, which resulted in a lift back to the pits by Pedal Prix staff, they completed 95 laps even after the loss in time due to repairs. A big thank you to the parents/caregivers who gave up a few nights to set the vehicles up for the race, to those who helped students in and out vehicles, and those who took a turn at marshalling late in the day. Without your help, these events would not be possible. Why not come and see all the action at our next race on July 30 at Victoria Park?

Police band’s cybersafety message

Last Thursday (15 June), the Year 6 and 7 students along with the Year 8 and 9 music classes were entertained by a music ensemble from the SA Police. The students enjoyed bopping along to the range of music, which included a mix of classic rock, pop and disco. Importantly, in between the enjoyable music was a personal safety message surrounding cybersafety and how to be safe online. The students also engaged in conversations with the musicians regarding Police work and in particular, protecting themselves and looking out for each other when it comes to the use of technology. A short clip from the presentation can be found here.

SENIOR SCHOOL

From the Head of the Senior School Fifteen year old Australian teenagers have ranked equal 5th on a global scale of financial literacy. This is the finding from the latest report of the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is based on a study of the OECD Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Sacred Heart College participated in this study along with 53,000 students from 15 countries, 14,530 of whom were from Australia. Some of the interesting results were:

• 52% of 15 year olds said they earn money outside the home • 37% are selling things online or in markets of some kind • 80% of students have bank accounts • 90% of students are looking at how they can save money. •

When asked “if you really wanted an item, how would you go about it?” about 67% said they would save for it. The higher the socio-economic background of the student, the more likely they were to save. The lower the socio-economic background, the more likely they would find the money from other sources, such as drawing on money that had been put aside for a different purpose. Professor Geoff Masters (ACER Chief Executive) says that “the general observation is that financial literacy is a key life skill and is likely to be increasingly important”. Sacred Heart College is well aware of the importance of financial literacy and this year provided a new Year 10 elective subject called My Money My Life. We have provided six classes this year with 48% of Year 10 students studying the course in either semester 1 or semester 2. It is a timely reminder to families that subject selections will occur in Term 3. Many opportunities will be provided for students to make informed decisions concerning their study path at Sacred Heart College. The first of these opportunities is the Sacred Heart College Careers Expo which will be held in the Br Joseph McAteer Centre on Thursday 6 July from 6.00pm - 7.30pm. I look forward to seeing you there. Gail Morgan Head of Senior School

Year 11 & 12 Parents/Caregivers: Road Awareness Program Year 11 and 12 Parents and Caregivers, along with family, friends and Old Scholars, are invited to attend a powerful Road Awareness Program (RAP) that could save your life!

THURSDAY 3 AUGUST 2017, 7.00 – 8.30pm Br Stephen Debourg Performing Arts Centre, Sacred Heart College Senior School, Somerton Park

Parents/caregivers… are you interested in keeping your child safe on the road?

Please click on the link below to find out how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKAuJd5SxTA

An interactive PowerPoint presentation takes approximately 100 minutes, incorporating some photographic and video content showing graphic footage of real crashes and some crash recreations. During the presentation, firefighters will share their personal experiences, with a focus on ways in which people are affected by road trauma and how a young person’s life may change following a motor vehicle crash. The highlight of the program is a guest speaker - a real life crash survivor who talks about their ordeal. Through sharing their story, they make an impassioned plea for others to learn from their mistakes. At the conclusion of the presentation, parents/caregivers will be asked to give feedback about how the program has impacted their attitudes to road use. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact RAP coordinators, Rod Campbell or Brad Ryan on 1300 737 637.

PLEASE NOTE: Year 11 students will attend their own RAP Presentation the next day (4 August),

hence they are not required to attend this evening event.

This presentation is not suitable for young children.

To register you attendance, please RSVP to Kathryn Mortlock Ph: 8350 2515 or email [email protected]

Finding Creative Commons work If you are looking for work under a creative commons licence then there are a couple of different options you could use.

1. Creative Commons databases: www.creativecommons.org.au is a website that contains information about creative commons and how to use them. There is also a search bar that you can use to search for images, music, media and video that are under a creative commons licence.

2. Using the Google search filter for images: When searching for images in Google you can filter the pictures according the rights assigned to each picture. To do this you type in the image you want to search for and then click on the tools option. Click on the usage rights option and set to labelled for reuse with modification to be able to use and modify the image.

What if you can’t tell if a material is under a Creative Commons licence? If you can’t determine the rights of any material then the rule is to treat it like a copyright material and only use a fair portion of the work. Just because you can’t find the rights doesn’t mean that there isn’t any. Acknowledging the author of the material When using copyright material it is the accepted practice to acknowledge the author of the work. This allows readers to firstly acknowledge that the material is not your own but also the authenticity of the author of the work. General citations of copyright material include the author's name, the title of the work, where the work came from (URL), and in some cases when you accessed the work.

Getting back to nature Walter Park was a hive of activity on Friday last week (9 June) as our inaugural Stage 2 Child Studies class prepared nature play based activities for a group of enthusiastic toddlers. The students set up a variety of activities including mud pies, pine cone painting, leaf and bark art, and creating nature faces as well as a reading corner, which kept the toddlers busy for a good hour. The activity enabled the students to gain an understanding around nature play, a concept that encourages children to spend more time playing outdoors, using their imaginations in a natural setting, which inspires their creativity, learning and socialising.

Dance at Sacred Heart Senior Dance Night On Wednesday 7 June, the Senior Dance Night was held in the Br Stephen Debourg Centre. This night was a chance for the three Senior Dance classes to demonstrate their performance skills to an audience (family and friends) as well as share the work they have been doing this semester. The Year 10 Dancers performed two class pieces and then presented their ‘Dance for Film’ videos with the audience. These were choreographed, filmed and edited by each group and proved to be a highlight of the term. The Stage 1 class presented their two class dances and then their ‘Group Choreographies’. Each group was responsible for their own theme, choreography, costumes and music. The themes varied from ‘issues with social media’ to ‘paranoia’ and ‘good versus evil’. The Stage 2 Class also performed on the night, presenting a sneak preview of a contemporary dance they will present at their Moderation Performance (Term 3). Stage 2 Dance student Savannah Cleary performed her Choreography ‘Pompeii’ with dancer Lauren Murphy. This piece explored the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and the catastrophic consequences for the nearby towns. The evening was a true showcase of our wonderfully talented dancers. It was lovely to also see the high level of professionalism and support of each other behind the scenes. Thank you to all our family and friends (and staff) who supported us on the night.

Year 10 Dancers visit Marymount College On Friday 16 June, the Year 10 Dance class were fortunate to be the ‘special guests’ at the Marymount College Year 9 Dance Assembly. This whole school assembly was a showcase of the work the Year 9 Dancers have been doing, so we felt privileged to have been invited. It was definitely the biggest audience our Year 10 Dance class had performed to, but they did a magnificent job. We thank Ms Alex Tilley for the chance to perform and the Marymount School and for the warm welcome. We hope this is the beginning of many collaborative opportunities!

Supporting your child’s safety online – Instagram Following a visit in May from Sonya Ryan of the Carly Ryan Foundation, who spoke to our Year 10 students and parents about the practical steps they can take to protect their privacy and safety online, I will include a fact sheet in each newsletter over the coming weeks. Last fortnight’s newsletter included a fact sheet on Snapchat. These fact sheets have been developed by the Australian Federal Police and each are relevant to a number of popular apps and social media platforms that young people are using. Sonya’s sessions were very powerful as they explored her personal journey of losing her daughter, Carly, to an online predator and then the work she has done since to educate and protect young people from suffering a similar fate. Sonya explained the risks of some the most popular apps and social media platforms and provided step by step guides for how parents can support their children (and themselves) to ensure that they have safe privacy and security settings. Instagram (For parents) fact sheet > If you would like a copy of all of the fact sheets that Sonya provided in her session, please contact Kathryn Mortlock at [email protected]. Meningococcal B Vaccine Herd Immunity Study The first round of the vaccinations under the Meningococcal B Vaccine Herd Immunity Study was successfully administered on Wednesday 10 May to all students who had registered for the study. In order to accommodate the large number of students taking part in the study, the vaccines will be administered in year level groups over a number of days throughout the year, which started with Year 11 students on Wednesday. Please see below for the dates when the vaccines will be administered: Round 2 Vaccinations Year 11: Wednesday 5 July 2017 (Week 10, Term 2) Year 12: Tuesday 22 August 2017 (Week 5, Term 3) Year 10: Wednesday 23 August 2017 (Week 5, Term 3). The Meningococcal B Vaccine Herd Immunity Study will only involve those students who have returned a completed and signed consent form. The dates of the administration of the vaccine have been chosen to minimise disruption to lessons and the learning of students, however the complexity of administering the vaccine to all students throughout the day may result in some lessons being affected. If you have any urgent enquiries or questions about a late return of a consent form or regarding the content of the study, please contact Popup Medics on 1300 858 047 or email [email protected]. Careers Expo 2017 Sacred Heart College will be staging a Careers Expo for students in the senior years of schooling. This year, for the first time, it will be held in the new Br Joseph McAteer Centre on Thursday 6 July. A wide range of education and training providers will be represented. Please mark the date in your diary and come along with your child between 6.00pm and 7.30pm. This date may also be helpful for the boarding community as it is the evening before the last day of term.
