Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—November 8, 2020—-32nd Week of Ordinary Time The Defenders of the Eucharist ~ Paul Peter Rubens Rubens reached back to the golden age of the Church Fathers as well as to outstanding saints of the Middle Ages and assembled seven of them in one scene, united in the one faith of the Church witnessing their unity through the centuries of faith in the Eucharistic presence of Christ. Today that painting is on display in the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Beginning on the right side of the canvas, Rubens pictures St. Jerome, dressed as a cardinal receiving Communion. Next to him stands St. Norbert, clothed in his white habit and carrying the Eucharist beneath his robes. St. Thomas Aquinas stands in the center holding a book and extending his other hand to heaven, a gesture proclaiming his defense of the Eucharist. Beside him is St. Clare of Assisi, holding a monstrance that displays the Sacred Eucharistic Host. To her left is St. Gregory the Great, the pope who wrote so many works contained in the Mass. Then comes St. Ambrose, who wrote about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Rubens finishes his gathering of defenders of the Eucharist with St. Augustine, who included his reflections on this sacrament in his famous treatise on the Holy Trinity. Rubens produced this painting during the Churchs Counter-Reformation efforts to defend and reclaim the authentic teachings about the Eucharist and the devotions that assisted believers to deepen their commitment to this mystery of faith. The Seven Saints represented in this painting summarize our belief in the Eucharist. It is a sacrifice, the sacrifice of Jesus made present in a sacramental way. It is a sacrament of the abiding presence of Christ in the transformed bread and wine which becomes His Body and Blood. It is a sacramental meal begun on Holy Thursday and available to us in Holy Communion. This sacrament is available to members of the Catholic Church who are in the state of grace. It is a transforming sacrament. The term transubstantiationmeans that the substance of bread and wine is changed into the substance of Christ s Body and Blood. In receiving Communion, we too undergo a gradual transformation into Christ and are called to spread His love given to us throughout the world." (Excerpt from article: The Saints and Eucharistic Devotion, by Norbertine priest-Fr. Alfred McBride.) This painting reminds us that Christ and His beloved Church has been persecuted for her beliefs since the time of the Apostles. The Eucharist, is the very Real Presence of Jesus—His Body, His Blood, His Soul and His Divinity— in the world today. As Jesus was demeaned, abused, and cursed by those who did not believe, so Jesus, in the Eucharist- continues to be demeaned, abused and cursed by those who will not believe. The Eucharist is Jesus, the Living Bread come down to us from heaven so that He could be with us always, as He promised, in the breaking of the bread. We join the witness of the saints and lift Him up so that we may all see and believe. Let us pray together that during this Year of the Eucharist:Lord Jesus, Your Presence in our hearts, and in our world, fills us with hope and joy. Today, in the Eucharist, we encounter You anew. You draw us into communion with You, transforming us through your Body and Blood. Stay with us, Lord. Be our nourishment and strength. Send us forth as servants to the world and witnesses of your Eternal Love. Amen. "In the sixteenth century, the denial of the Real Presence occurred again, along with a repudiation of the Mass as making present the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus. The Churchs response through the Council of Trent strongly reaffirmed these Eucharistic truths and sponsored a revival of the Eucharistic devotions initiated in the Middle Ages. Perhaps the greatest Eucharistic artwork from this period is Peter Paul Rubenss oil painting entitled The Defenders of the Eucharist, created in 1625.

The Defenders of the Eucharist

~ Paul Peter Rubens

Rubens reached back to the golden age of the Church Fathers as well as to outstanding saints of the Middle Ages and assembled seven of them in one scene, united in the one faith of the Church witnessing their unity through the centuries of faith in the Eucharistic presence of Christ. A World at Prayer: The Vision of Patrick Peyton CSC (available on Amazon.com) is an inspiring film about a poor, uneducated Irish immigrant who sets sail for America in 1928 with nothing but his faith and dreams of becoming a millionaire. Arriving in Pennsylvania and unable to find work, he accepts the position as a janitor at the cathedral, which rekindles his long-lost desire to become a priest and changes the course of his life. When he was stricken with tuberculosis and facing certain death, Patrick prayed fervently to Mary for her intercession and was miraculously cured. He then dedicated his life to telling all the world about the power of prayer and encourages families everywhere to bring prayer into their homes. He convinced Hollywood’s biggest stars to help him spread the message, “The family that prays together stays together,” through the power of mass media including radio,

television, and film. This is the story of a tireless missionary, an unlikely hero, and one of history’s greatest advocates for family prayer. Furthering his cause for sainthood, Pope Francis declared Father Patrick Peyton a Venerable on December 18, 2017. Father Peyton’s main work was to get families and communities to pray and to recognize that prayer is the center of our lives. That’s why the PRAY TOGETHER NOW Movement has now been launched. The purpose of this movement is to have families and communities across the world to commit to 35 days of praying together. The goal is to get ten million people to pray—because, as Father Peyton beautifully said, “A world at prayer is a world at peace.” Just go to PrayTogetherNow.com to sign up and click below to view the FAQs about this movement and how you can get involved.

FIAT, a gather ing of women interested in learning more about religious life, cordially invites you to the next meeting on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Zoom. The topic will be “Responding to God’s Call.” A panel of sisters will share their vocation stories. If you are interested, please contact S. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an experience of the gift of God’s boundless mercy. Not only does Jesus free us from our sins but He also challenges us and gives us the grace to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. By the help of God’s grace, which we receive in this beautiful sacrament, our call to holiness will be clearer when we recover an awareness of the reality of sin. The pandemic has changed the way we do so many things. Here in our collaborative, we are able to offer confessions by appointment or during our monthly Holy Hour on the last Friday of each month. For your benefit, we are publishing additional opportunities for the sacrament in the area parish collaboratives: Weymouth: Immaculate Conception : Saturdays 3:00-3:45 or Saint Jerome by appointment; St. Francis Xavier and St. Albert, by appointment; Braintree: St Francis of Assisi, Saturdays 2:30-3:45 & St Clare, Saturday 8:30-9:00am Hingham: St Paul - Resurrection at Resurrection, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays evenings from 7:30 until 9:00PM Quincy: St John - St. Joseph at St. John: Wednesdays 6:45-7:45PM (drive thru), Saturdays NOON-2:00

Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—November 8, 2020—-32nd Week of Ordinary Time

Sometimes it can be difficult to see a connection between the three Sunday readings, but this week the Readings all relate to one theme: the importance of seeking and using the Wisdom of God in our lives. Wisdom in the biblical sense is a God-given gift. This Wisdom is not human knowledge; it is the first and highest gift of the Holy Spirit. The First Reading describes the wonders of Wisdom, who is “resplendent and unfading…the perfection of prudence.” If we want to know God and His Will for our lives, we need only ask Him for His gift of Wisdom. As Saint James tells us: If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (Js 1:15). Wisdom is, as today’s Reading tells us: “readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her.” The Bible cautions that we must not be wise in our own eyes (Prov 3:7). While many of us believe that we know and under-stand God’s will for His People, wisdom is the ability to put this knowledge and understanding into practice in our daily lives. Jesus has said: “You shall know my disciples by their fruits” (Mt 7:16). In his letter to the churches, James makes clear that there are two kinds of wisdom, when he writes: “Who is wise and un-derstanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, sub-missive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” (James 3: 13-18). The fruits of God-given wisdom are peace, mercy, compassion, and righteousness, a life that puts God and the needs of their neighbors above their own. With God’s Wisdom, we are able to discern His Will in our lives. As Saint Paul explains: “We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor 2:12-14). In today’s Gospel (MT 25:1-13), Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to ten virgins, five who were foolish and five who were wise virgins. The foolish ones did not prepare for the coming of the King. They were lazy virgins, who did not have the will to prepare for the coming of the Lord. When the King was coming, they even expected those wise virgins who were prepared for His coming to help them by sharing their own prepa-rations. It was too late. The King came while they were running out to do what they should have done before He came. They were locked out of the kingdom because they had unwisely thought they could get ready-change their lives-in time for the King’s coming. Unfortunately, when they begged to enter the Kingdom and the Lord said to them: ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.’" The comparison to our lives in Christ is apparent. We must be ready to meet the Lord on any day at any time. Jesus Himself

chose not to retain this knowledge when He became Man. Yes, He is fully divine and so knows all things. However, being Divine, there is no evil in Him. He cannot lie. It was His choice to keep the knowledge of His Second Coming in the hands of His Father. In that way, when His disciples asked Him when He was coming again, He could honestly say that “only the Father knows the day and the hours.” We must, as He warns us again in today’s parable, “stay awake,” and be like the wise virgins, be prepared to meet Him no matter when He chooses to come again. Saint Paul was very much aware that the time of Christ’s Second Coming was a burning question for Christians in his time and has been throughout history. He did not want us to be “unaware” or “unwise” about “those who sleep in death,” or those “who are left at the coming of the Lord,” which using the gift of Wisdom, he explains in today’s Second Reading. His words echo our Lord’s Word, when He told His disciples. Those of us who are alive at the end of time, as we know it, will see “the Son of Man in Heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of Heaven, with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the Heavens to the other” (Mt 24:30-31). While we await the Coming of the Lord in Glory, we are like today’s Psalmist and we cry out to Him: “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. O God, you are my God whom I seek.”

If you seek God, then seek Wisdom. “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov 9:10). “To fear the Lord is to hate evil;

I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech” (Prov 8:13). In other words, if we are to be prepared for meeting the Lord at the moment of our death or at His Second Coming, we must be wise. We must use the gift of God-given Wisdom which is available to all people who ask the Lord for His gift. We prepare for the coming of our King by wisely building up His Kingdom on earth by being: “peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who…reap a harvest of righteousness.” But, to be prepared to meet the Lord, we must be busy building up His Kingdom on earth with our good words and our good works. To accomplish our God-given task, we need God’s Wisdom because He is Perfect Wisdom. He knows what we need before we even ask Him. He desires to work all things together for our good. He wants us to use His Gift of Wisdom to make those decisions which will draw us closer to Him. But, even more than that He wants us to use our gift of Wisdom to be His wit-nesses, to bring His Good News into the world-into our homes, our workplaces, our communities. To wisely prepare for meeting the Lord when He comes again, we must: 1) study and meditate on His Word; 2) talk with Him in prayer; and 3) follow His Commandments, loving God, our neighbor, and ourselves as He first loved us. The Lord knows we need His Wisdom to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this life so as to be happy with Him in Heaven. He wants to give us His Wisdom so that we won’t foolishly follow our own counsel, but will: “Trust in the Lord and do good; Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun” (Ps 37: 3-6). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and

perverse speech” (Prov 8:13).

——— NB: St. Vincent de Paul, Mass. conferences announced that they were unable to provide meals for this season.

Our Food Pantry has relocated to Sacred Heart School Kitchen: Deacon Bash & Geeta Goppee will now be bagging and sorting donations in the renovated Sacred Heart School kitchen and distribution center. This new site, complete with industrial size freezers and refrigerators, as well as portable shelving, will provide the opportunity for our collaborative to complete our application with the Greater Boston Food Bank to provide fresh produce and dairy for our Food Pantry families. Donations will still be brought to the SHSTM business office during regular business hours. We are most grateful to Deacon Bash & Geeta, our pantry managers, and to Dan and Zack, facilities & operations, for their efforts to make this move a reality.
