Welcome to Southwark Cathedral

Set on the south bank of the River Thames in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in London, this building has been a constant witness in a place of change.

The first church was built on this site around the year 606. First a convent, then a monastery, it became in 1106 the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie. With Westminster Abbey and St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield it is one of the three remaining great monastic churches of London. At the Reformation the Priory became a parish church and it remains so for the people of Bankside. In 1905, as south London was rapidly expanding, the church was consecrated as the cathedral for the new Diocese of Southwark.

As well as a place of constant witness to our faith in Jesus Christ, this church has a momentous and proud history and has had links with many famous and influential characters including St Thomas Becket, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens.

In the 20th century this cathedral was at the heart of the new movement in theology termed ‘South Bank Religion’. This movement asked challenging questions of people about faith in the modern age which continue to be explored at Southwark Cathedral which describes itself as ‘inclusive: faithful: radical’.

Prayers of Penitence

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.

Page 5: Choral Eucharist

5

We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from all your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Please sit.

Gloria in Excelsis

you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect

Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people, that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your name; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All Amen.

First ReadingEzekiel 2. 1–5

Read by Kabby Streater.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel.

The voice said to me: O mortal, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you. And when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. He said to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’ Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

PsalmPsalm 123

Sung by the Choir.

Unto thee lift I up mine eyes: O thou that dwellest in the heavens.

Behold, even as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress: even so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until he have mercy upon us.

Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are utterly despised.

Our soul is filled with the scornful reproof of the wealthy: and with the despitefulness of the proud.

Second Reading2 Corinthians 12. 2–10

Read by Pauline Allard.

A reading from the Second Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.

I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows— was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given to me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with

Page 10: Choral Eucharist

10

weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Jesus left that place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house.’ And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

The Creed

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

Page 13: Choral Eucharist

13

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with youAll and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

Page 17: Choral Eucharist

17

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

Page 18: Choral Eucharist

18

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith:All Christ has died.

Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Page 19: Choral Eucharist

19

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of Mary the Mother of Jesus, and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us so we pray.

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Page 20: Choral Eucharist

20

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

A crisis in Zimbabwe

We are fortunate to be in close and regular contact with Bishop Godfrey in our link diocese of Masvingo and with our friends at ArtPeace in Harare. This means that we hear what is happening on the ground and to our friends. We thought that you should know some of what we have heard in the last few days. On Monday the bishop wrote:

Due to an increase in Covid19 cases church gatherings are no longer allowed. For the past two Sundays our church doors have been closed. We do not know for how long this situation will continue. Opening of schools has been delayed by two weeks when a review will be done. As you might know that we had a national lockdown in January and February this year. It has been just for three months that we have been worshipping in our churches with a limited number of fifty people and now church gatherings have been banned. It's very difficult. Clergy continue to use social media platforms to reach out to the Faithful. This is difficult in most parts of our Diocese which is rural. The vaccination program has some challenges including shortage of doses. Not much of an awareness campaign has

Page 27: Choral Eucharist

27

been done and some people are sceptical about being vaccinated. Despite these circumstances we continue to be hopeful and resilient in our faith.

Then the following day Bishop Godfrey wrote:

Today, Tuesday, the government of Zimbabwe announced additional measures to contain the spread of Covid19. Intercity travel has been banned except for purposes of providing essential services. Curfew hours have been extended. Industry remains open but is to decongest. The situation will be reviewed in a fortnight's time. It's tough going but we continue to call upon the Lord. We appreciate your support and prayers under these very difficult times.

We have been able to send £10,000 this week to help with the costs of the diocese. The Bishop also asked for details of our live streams of services so that people, who have digital devices, can be encouraged to join us for our services. We will also continue to pray for the people.

ArtPeace is the artists collective who produce the lovely carvings we sell in the shop. Last Sunday the Dean explained that the artists have no income and encouraged members of the congregation who could do so to buy a carving. Many did and we have been able to send a good amount of money to the artists. Our contact with them wrote this

Page 28: Choral Eucharist

28

Feedback from ArtPeace recently has been depressing to say the least. Life is miserable as they are in lockdown yet again. To make matters worse their main shopping area in Caledonia normally full of stands (flimsy stalls) selling food far cheaper than city shops was demolished by the authorities (left). The number of Zimbabweans in extreme poverty has reached 7.9 million as the pandemic has delivered another economic shock to the country. Unemployment is even higher than normal, and some are forced to take menial jobs breaking boulders into small stones for road aggregate for the princely sum of two dollars a day.

If you feel able to help in any way please do so. You can make a donation via the Cathedral but please make it clear it is for Zimbabwe, or visit the Cathedral shop.

On your bike!

Canon Jay Colwill will be cycling around the 42 cathedrals of England (just under 2000 miles) in order to raise awareness for this work and celebrate the place of cathedrals in our communities. Jay sets off on 16 July and we wish him well. The charity he is supporting is 'Together Southwark’ the social action initiative of Southwark Diocese to respond to poverty in its many forms: food insecurity, isolation

Page 29: Choral Eucharist

29

and loneliness as well as financial insecurity. If you can sponsor him your donation will help us to help churches and community groups that are working effectively in these areas throughout South London and East Surrey. You can give support via JustGiving.

Free Music Recitals at Southwark Cathedral

We have been starved of live music during the pandemic so we are delighted that a full programme of recitals has begun again at the Cathedral. This week we have the following

Monday 5 July, 1.20pm Organ Recital by Lorenzo Bennett, St Mary Magdalene, Richmond

New Visitor Route

As the next stage in the process of opening up a new visitor route has begun which brings all people coming to the Cathedral during the week through the Millennium Courtyard and into the Cathedral via the Link. Please remember that the Café is now fully open as is the Cathedral Shop. When we know what 19 July will bring we will let you know where we will be going with the next stage of restoring life to something more like normality.

Cathedral Listeners

Our team of Cathedral listeners will be on duty following the Choral Eucharist every Sunday. You can find them, ready and waiting, in the Retrochoir. So if you would like to speak to someone please go to see them after the service.

Our Mission Partner for July – The Manna Centre

Each year we support the work of the Manna Centre who serve the homeless in our neighborhood. The Manna staff and dedicated volunteers offer respect and loving care to those who come to the Day Centre. On average, we cater for around 120-150 people per day – mostly men. Approximately two thirds of our clients are homeless. The Manna Day Centre was founded by Nannette Ffrench and opened to the homeless in 1982. The Centre is based near London Bridge station, about a two minute walk from The Shard. The building is provided rent-free by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Southwark. Every day we serve breakfast and lunch, and provide many other services. The Centre is run by a team of 8 full-time, 4 part-time workers and about 20 volunteers every week. The Centre opens at 8.30am but the Centre workers arrive earlier to prepare the Centre

Page 31: Choral Eucharist

for opening. Volunteers help in the kitchen, the computer suite and the clothing store.

Congratulations

We were delighted to hear during the week that a member of the congregation, Alison Clark, who was our artist-in-residence, has been appointed Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of South-Eastern Norway, where she has been working for a few years. We congratulate Alison on this appointment.
